I posted enough of the solution to get people reading and looking at
this thread for all the details.  The Orbi router has a setting that
simply allows you to uncheck a box to "disable ax features" on 2.4
and/or 5.0 bands.  I just did it on 2.4.  The ax features is part of the
new protocol that I believe is part of "wireless 6."  So it is running
on older protocols I assume, ac or n or ?  that doesn't cause the SB's
to seize up.  I don't notice a difference in speed.

I'm sure this particular setting is specific to Orbi but others may have
something like it.
