David ... that's where piCorePlayer really shines. You can use a 1/8" jack
to RCA audio cable to get from the RPi to the Touch's RCA inputs. That gets
you going (you're initial cost is I'd think less than a Win10 system with
RPi & case). Later if you want you buy an add-on audio hardware card
Thank you for the replies.
I do agree that the RPi is a very tempting solution. The only reason
that I am not really considering the RPi route at the moment is that I
changed jobs two years ago, and unfortunately at the moment I am
exceedingly time poor with the new job, study and family.

If for whatever reason you don't want the RPi solution, your
Windows-based proposal will also work. As said above, you can still use
your NAS for storage.
Plenty of Windows mini-PCs on Amazon. Get one pre-installed with Win 10
Pro so you can access it via Remote Desktop. (Win 10 Home does not
Came here to say this.
I've been a RPi/piCorePlayer user for years. The RPi connects directly to
my ZyXel NAS for music files and the HiFiBerry DAC optical out to my stereo
receiver (they sit side by side next to my living room stereo & also next
to my DSL router).
PiCorePlayer is excellent &

I have been a Squeezebox touch user for well over a decade, and find
myself completely thwarted by my problems with the LMS on my Synology
DS418j.
So, I either sell my Touch and start from scratch again with something
like a PecanPi, or I find another solution for LMS.
So, this is my latest
I used a larger SD card to a 16GB and set up the RPi from scratch,
resizing the FS to use the entire card.
Did everything (I think) and now getting a "System call failed:

Here's the Network Mount screen. Let me know

Version 6.2.4-25556 Update 5, though it looks like I could go to v.7 if
I wanted to.
Otherwise, I'm reinstalling PiCorePlayer on the RPi, and I will hold off
on installing LMS while I'm following your directions. Thank you.
What Synology version are you running?
At this point, the easiest solution is probably to install LMS on the
RPI. And then network mount to the Synology using a CIFS share.
On the Synology:
1) In File Services, enable SMB. I think everything can stay default
2) In Shared Folder, find the
Yesterday I made the horrible mistake of updating PERL on my Synology
NAS 218+ which broke my Squeezebox (actually PicorePlayer on a Raspberry
Pi 2). I have about a 750 GB of music files on the NAS. The RPi is
connected to my stereo receiver. (The RPi is equipped with a small LCD
screen, so that
