Ok, so I got rid of the offending directory and the scan/file addition 
has succeeded. A question, is the design intent for the scan process to 
exit upon failure to read a file or directory?  Or is there possibly
another issue at play?

So I tried doing a chmod _R 777 on the music folder structure, which did
not help unfortunately but thanks anyways.   Another issue I have been
experiencing after starting the LMS service is port 9000 communication
timeouts . Basically I can't access the LMS server for 15 minutes or so
after starting the process.  I checked my process id and it is pegged at
99%. I deleted the library.db file and restarted the LMS and I could
immediately access the URL interface.

So I have rolled and smoked the micro SD card 3-4 times in the last 24
hours . Each time  re-image/configure ,  I get the same results. 
Perhaps it is time for new flash card?

I am in the process of rebuilding a Pi3 (Max2play 2.56) LMS server for
my cottage. I have installed a nightly 8.30 version of LMS. I have
copied and verified my entire music catalog from my home NAS to a
portable HD. Music consists of FLAC and MP3. During the "discovering of
files /directories on the portable HD  I get the following :

It seems to be failing or quitting at 91K of 102k music files. I have a
LMS  running in a container on my home NAS  which when scanning  reports
the correct amount of music files (102K).  I mounted the NAS music
directory from my Pi LMS and rescanned and once again got the same
results 91k of 102K music files.  So I don't believe there is any issues
with my portable HD or it's contents. I am getting some errors in the
scanner log, but I don't believe anything serious enough to bounce the
process.

So I upgraded my spotty plugin and noticed my scan is failing during the
spotty portion of the scan? It appears as if the there is now an issue
with the Spotty Helper application? the helper does appear to be there
in the plugin  section.  Would you have any ideas? I may try
unchecking/rechecking the helper plugin to see if that helps.

Well I stand corrected. I checked it again today and it is indeed
running 8.3. It's been a few days since I did the upgrade, but I have 
upgraded some plugins since then   which required me to start/start the
LMS. Would it be possible the manual  LMS start/stop did something?

Hmmm, ran the lms-installer, from what i could tell it updated the
installer package. I then ran it again and it updated LMS to 8.2.1 ? I
was expecting 8.3?  TrueNAS is @ 12.0-U2 if that helps?

I should mention everything has been rock solid with both a large
library < 90K songs and 8 players.

I have noticed an issue with the file scanning, when I perform the 
"look for new and changed media files" it appears to clear the playlists
, but does not rescan the playlists, therefore the playlists are left
empty . If I recall this particular  function used to scan the playlists
as well? I notice the following in the log file for the above scan. Any
idea's ? I have included the True-NAS & LMS versions below the log
file.

[SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] Issue with "new and changed media files"

Hi I am running LMS 8.1.2-1612773843  on a freebsd (FREENAS) and I am
having scanning issues (scan for new music only)  where new music
sometimes does not show up in the "new music" tab. It will work if I do
a "clear lib and do a complete scan" Below is some output from the
logs.

Any help would be appreciated. When i have the time I will try a newer
LMS version.

I have something similar. I have a freeNAS server , but exporting
windows CIF's shares. The share is mounted from a raspberry PI running
MAX2PLAY software. As long as your LMS host supports NFS clients i don't
see an issue duplicating but with NFS,.  I don't think we will see a LMS
plugin for FreeNAS any time soon.

I have been running a Pi4 w/4G of RAM in the new Flirc case as a 
Max2play LMS for approx. 24 hrs. So far so good, initial music scan
(from remote  mounted file system on co-located  NAS) took about 82
minutes for  90K songs. On the Pi3 the scan I believe was around 4
hours.  Temperature has been hovering around 40-44C  sitting in a
communications rack in my basement with an ambient room  temp of  20C. 
Earlier it was in my office upstairs and during the music scan I seen
temps in the range of 50C with an ambient room  temp likely around 24C. 
I have a Pi3 in a stock Pi plastic case with a small heat sink on the
CPU sitting next to the Pi4 in the com rack and it is also showing temps
around 43C.  As expected, everything is "snappy" . I will sync 5 or 6
squeezebox's later and see if that creates any type of load on the
little guy. 

Over all very impressed. I will brun it in for a week or two, and if
everythting gores well I will repurpose the Pi3 LMS for something else.

Been running LMS on a PI3 for quite sometime. Scans are slow as music
library is not local to the Pi but  located on a NAS. What I thought was
slow search times etc. actually turned out to be my Squeeze Ctrl remote
control app. When searching directly from the browser everything is
pretty snappy. 

Running a  later nightly build on top of Max2play with at least 6
players scattered throughout the house.

The lads at flirc appear to use the entire Aluminium case top as a heast
sink. I have one on order I will let you know how it goes.

Well, being I am not sure how to wipe the database , the answer  would
be a hard yes. Which files do I need to delete prior to a downgrade or
upgrade?

Update from my previous post. Cleaned up a few files, and my scan
proceeds further   but still fails . Apparently there have been some
scanner acceptance changes between 7.9.0 and 7.9.1 . please see the last
lines of scanner log with debug on.  This is running on  MAX2PLAY 2.50
and Logitech Media Server Version: 7.9.1 - 1522157629 @ Fri Mar 30
12:27:11 CEST 2018.

I have noticed this premature scan temination for a while myself. I
typically have 2 LMS (MAX2PLAY) servers on identical Pi's with only one
running at any time, and the other used  as a player and a possible LMS
backup. Both LMS's are  pointing towards the same  music folder on a
FREENAS platform using the same user credentials. I have found LMS 
7.9.0 will scan properly, but later releases will "terminate
unexpectantly" with the last log entry pointing at a "invalid rating
tag".

[SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] Scanner terminating unexpectantly

Hi I have two Pi's running Max2play 2.46 with LMS 7.9.2 – 1529332109.
Both Pi’s mount the same NAS file system at the  same mount point, 
(where music files are kept)  with same userid/password. The 1st unit
"210" scan’s the music (78k tracks) perfectly, the 2nd unit "201" has a
media scan termination notice. I have tried several versions of LMS and
several versions of Max2play OS/Shell and still get the same results. I
have also tried changing the micro SD  card on Pi 210 . Here are the
scanner results from terminated scan on 210.
