You're right!!! Changing this setting and all songs show up in the
"Digest" genre. Thank you for figuring this out. I'll guess I'll find
out what, if any, difference it makes browsing artists now.

Again, thank you for solving the genre issue.

I have changed the genre for one of the RD albums to "Easy Listening"
and then the RD songs by Frank Sinatra showed up under the genre. The
same as when I faked a Perry Como album and put it in the "Digest"
genre. Doing so showed all Perry Como songs on the RD albums.

When I use "Use two separate lists for Albums Artists and All Artists" I
don't see my "Children" album under Genres.
When I use "Use single configurable list of artists" the"Children" album
appears under Genres and Compilations.
So it seems the issue is with two lists. I always use single
configurable list so I don't know if this affects other platforms.

Does the OP use the "compilation" tag?

Is the compilation tag set to "1", "0" or "Blank"?

Does it make any difference?

It seems you and @slartibartfast are finding opposite results in your
tests. His genres in compilations only are showing up, but yours are
not. It would be nice to have one of your comp "Digest" albums.
Dropbox accounts are free, at least for a small amount of storage. It
would be nice to test with a few of your files.

p.s. I doubt it can be related to the name "Digest" but just in case,

No Dropbox unfortunately. Otherwise I'd share.

I'm not sure it's related to just these albums though. It seems to be an
issue with LMS not recognizing a compilation album by itself. Please see

Re: [SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] Genres not showing for some vinyl and/or cassette tape ripped music.

2020-08-02 Thread NoDad

Another test. I changed all songs on one of the Reader's Digest
compilation albums to "Easy Listening" (I have two albums in this genre
already), did a complete scan and all songs from the RD albums now shows
up.

So this led to another test. I changed the genre for two albums to
"Digest", scanned and now all songs from all the compilations albums
show up.

I removed the "Digest" genre from the test albums. This now removed all
songs from the genre.

So to recap.
1. The genre in question has three compilation albums with all songs
marked as "Digest" genre.
2. None of the compilation album songs show up in the genre, when
looking in LMS.
3. Adding one album to the "Digest" genre makes the songs for the
artist, both the single artist album and the compilation album, show up
in the "Digest" genre. None of the other artist's songs on the
compilation album show up.
4. Adding two albums to the "Digest" genre makes all songs show up. All
artists on all compilation albums are now listed in the genre.
5. Removing the "test" albums from the genre, makes all songs disappear
from the genre (like number 2 above).

Seems a genre needs at least two other albums listed in the genre to be
able to recognize compilation album songs in the genre in question.

One artist albums are OK, a genre gets recognized with only the one
album.

Can someone else please test this as well and let me know. Just curious
is it's something wrong with my setup or if it's a bigger issue.

I did your test. Copied an album and changed the artist to Perry Como.
Which is one of the artists on the compilation albums. I set the test
album to the "Digest" genre. This caused both the test album and the
songs on the compilation album to appear under the "Digest" genre. Once
I removed the test album from the "Digest" genre, all songs disappeared
from the "Digest" genre.

This is after I upgraded to the latest version of LMS.

Do you have any of the artists on the compilation albums on album/s of
their own? In any genre?

I also have a genre called "Children", which is working correctly. Most
of the artists have their own album/s. In this genre even the
compilation album artists show up.

I don't think it is the nonstandard genre. I have lots of those. It may
be related to how LMS deals with artists that are ONLY in a complilation
album. (this may have been changed in newer LMS versions, but at least
in the old days this was an issue.) That is, if an artist is ONLY

up. Just as a test.

2020-08-02 Thread NoDad

The issue I'm having is not with ReplayGain. It was brought up as
someone noticed it was a little off. Which may have been me scanning the
songs incorrectly.

My issue was and still is with songs not showing in certain genres.
Doing some testing it might be a bug in the system. LMS doesn't seem to
recognize a genre assigned to only compilation albums.

For example, my wife wanted me to rip her parents Reader's Digest
compilation LP albums, which I (as the good husband I am :-) did. A new
genre for these songs; "Digest" was created. None of the songs/albums
show up under this genre. As a test I changed a Frank Sinatra album to
the "Digest" genre. Once I did, not only did the Sinatra album how up in
the "Digest" genre, but also all Sinatra songs from the Reader's Digest
compilation albums.

Changing the Sinatra album back to Easy Listening genre, removed both
the album and all Sinatra songs on the RD albums from being listed in
the "Digest" genre. After each change I "Clear the library and rescan
everything" to make sure the changes are implemented.

Is this happening because I'm using a non-standard genre? Or, is it a
bug which prevents LMS from recognizing genres for compilation albums?

Well, I re-ran the ReplayGain and now it shows -3.06 for the album and
-3.14 for the same song as above.

I also upgraded to the latest LMS and did a "clear library and rescan"
(for the umpthenth time today) and all of a sudden all the songs are now
listed in the Oldies genre. I'm thinking it's because I added a single
artist album to the genre as well before scanning. This seem to have
triggered LMS to realize the genre actually exists and added the
American Graffiti album to the genre.

I am going to try this with another genre as well as it is still empty.

exactly. Which as you point out, indicates something odd going on if
this is in fact supposed to be one album with one genre.

album gain *is* typically different from the track gain. But all tracks
in a single album should have identical album gain.

Looking at the album information it does say it's a compilation, see
below

LMS reads the tags into its database so there must be something wrong
with the way the tags are written if LMS is empty.
When you do “view Tags” you are reading the file directly not the
corresponding entry in the database.
Post a couple of example files and we can take a look.

I downloaded mpstag and took a look at the files in question. It's
puzzling. All of them show the correct genre in mp3tag (as well as in
Foobar & Windows). Extended tags showed the genre as well.

In LMS it's different. Some albums show up under their the genre/s.
Others don't. Seems the ones not showing up in LMS are collection albums
with many various artists. See screen shot below. American Graffiti
doesn't show up under Oldies in LMS, but Animals does show up under
Rock.

I tested changing the genre of a Billboard top 1957 songs CD and now
it's not showing up under the genre. Is there something special which
needs to be done to "collection" type albums?

I don't find any issue when using mp3tag in differentiating between
flac and mp3 tags. I would though look through at the show extended tags
option to see if there are additional tags which are affecting things.

Try mp3tag on Windows. Load both the working and not working files, then
select all. If the Genre field says '< keep >', the tags differ
(assuming here that both sets should have the same genre). Make sure
that the files only have FLAC tags (see Tag column), not mp3 or other
types in addition.

Thanks for your reply. Which tag editor should I use? Is there one that
will give me more information than what I'm using? When I look at the
files using Foobar the tags are there whether it's a rip from a CD or
from a vinyl (LP) record. When I add the column Genre in Windows file
explorer the genre shows up as well. It's only when I look at the genres
in LMS the files/songs are not showing up under the genre selected.

Why don't you compare some files that do work against others that don't
within a tag editor? That would help to see if there are any errors
which prevent albums being displayed correctly.

[SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] Genres not showing for some vinyl and/or cassette tape ripped music.

2020-07-19 Thread NoDad

The other day I was looking at what music I have in different genres.
While filtering I noticed some of the music digitized from LP (vinyl) or
cassette tapes didn't show up. These albums or tapes all have been
tagged with the appropriate genre, but they aren't listed under the
genre in LMS.

The genre shows up in LMS, but the (vinyl/cassette ripped) music
assigned to the genre does not. Changing the genre of a song ripped from
a CD worked. It showed up under the genre in question.

Each LP and cassette tape were digitized to single .wav files, split
into separate songs and then converted to .flac using EAC. Finally
Foobar 2000 was used to tag each album/song. The genres for some of the
music done this way works, but some don't.

I'm using LMS version 8 running on Windows 10. Any idea what might cause
this issue? Any idea where to start troubleshooting?

I'm grateful for any help I can get.
