Re: Introduction

2020-02-24 Thread Frantisek Lachman
Hey Arunagirinadan,

Glad you are interested in the Packit project!

Before we start, please read through the Google Summer of Code 2020
 page on
Fedora Docs, including all the references to the GSoC documentation from
Google. This is important in order to make sure that you have a good
understanding of the timeline and things that need to be done in that
timeline.

Since the Fedora organisation was officially approved on the 20th of
February, you can start getting familiar with Packit and start working on
your proposal.

Here are some links, where you can start exploring:

   -

Packit.dev website. You’ll find user facing and
some architecture documentation here. Read through these to understand how
the service and application work from a user point of view.
   -

   Packit Service GitHub organization .
We have quite a few repositories here. Browse through them to understand
their purpose and how they relate to each other. You should spend most of
your time on getting familiar with packit
   , packit-service
   , ogr
   , deployment
    and dashboard
. Try to play with the code
in these repositories, run the tests and maybe deploy the service on your
   machine.

In order to prove your skills, I encourage you to contribute a change to
one of these repositories, before the end of the application review period
(April 27, 2020). You can either fix an issue you find while getting
familiar with Packit, or you could look at some of the issues labelled
good-first-issue. Note, that it’s not just code you can contribute, the
team also welcomes and values improvements to the documentation.

The goal for all the above is for you to learn enough about Packit so that
you can come up with a meaningful project proposal as part of your
application.

As for staying in touch: email is the most reliable way, but you can also
easily reach me on Telegram . Another option
is IRC on Freenode in the #packit or #fedora-summer-coding channels. I’m
usually online 8-17 UTC on weekdays, so I should be relatively quick in
replying to pings during that period.

Regards,

František

Hi Koundinya,

Welcome to the Fedora summer coding mailing list and thanks for
introducing yourself. We're happy to have you here! Sounds like you have
a good amount of experience working with Android applications.

You can find the project repository for the current app here:

https://pagure.io/Fedora-app

There are a lot of design discussions so far, but I'm unsure for the
back-end discussion. The project mentors (Sumantro and Kanika) can
answer other specific questions you have about getting started.

I also recommend reading through the archives of this mailing list to
see previous discussion about the projects and other tips for applying.

The reason why we chose to work with ionic is because ionic helps to create
Hybrid apps ie. apps can be easily converted to Android, IOS without writing
codes separately. Now we are planning to work with system cache, which can also
be implemented though ionic.

Hi Raghav,

Welcome to Fedora!

Wiki edits need CLA+1 access. If you are still not able to edit the wiki,
please ping in #fedora-commops and someone should help.

Here is a list of mentors available for general help :
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Summer_coding_ideas_for_2017#Supporting_Mentors

Also, please ping your project mentor on IRC or via mailing list - so that
he/she can advise you on how to proceed further for the project.

Hope this helps and good luck for GSoC,

Best,

I am glad you are interested in participating as a Fedora Contributor
and as a GSoC student. I strongly encourage you to study the wiki pages
we have created for GSoC and to read about the project you are
interested in. Once you have done the exploration you are capable of,
you should write specific questions that we can answer.

One thing that helps students be successful and grow from the GSoC
experience is to learn to do the research required to ask specific
questions. We will be happy to help and mentor you, but we'd like to
see what you find and have questions about with out "spoon-feeding" you
the whole time.

Have you read the DNF docs yet? Have you looked into the project
description and any bugs that may be filed along side the code? These
are things that will become obvious when you write a specific question
as opposed to a general "anything else I should learn?" style question.

Thank you and I look forward to continuing to work side-by-side with you
whether through GSoC or not.

It looks like you're interested in the CommOps slot! Whether or not we
get a slot for it will depend on a couple of things:

1) The number of mentors allocated to the project idea.
2) The number and strength of applicants we have applying for a slot.

Looking forward to getting to know everyone involved in the HUBS project.

Awesome Gaurav, it sounds like you have a good set of experience working
in web development. Your talents and skills could definitely be of use
for Hubs. :)

Remy will definitely be one of the best points of contact for Hubs and
can probably speak more for the project than I can. However, in the
meanwhile, you can definitely get started on the application process as
explained in the Community Blog article.

https://communityblog.fedoraproject.org/fedora-accepted-google-summer-of-code-gsoc-2016/

You should now begin to put together your application on the wiki in the
format requested and then send it to this list once you have completed
it. That will be the next step for you in the GSoC cycle. :)

Hi Gaurav, and welcome to the Fedora GSoC 2016 list!

Thanks for reaching out!

Yes, Fedora Hubs IS listed as a GSoC project. Whether or not we get a
slot for it will depend on a couple of things:

1) The number of mentors allocated to the project idea.
2) The number and strength of applicants we have applying for a slot.
3) The number of slots we are awarded by Google.

The best way to ensure that we DO get a slot for it is to follow the
procedure described at the bottom of the GSoC organization page.

https://summerofcode.withgoogle.com/organizations/5630777857409024/

You can start by giving a full introduction about yourself here on the
summer-coding mailing list. Feel free to tell us about your education /
where you go to school, what type of development work / languages you
like doing or using, and anything else you think is relevant to share
here with us.

You can also join the various IRC channels (#fedora-summer-coding,
#fedora-apps, and #fedora-hubs), and then work with mentors to figure
out your next steps. IRC will be an important part of your time here at
Fedora, so it's important to spend some time getting used to it. There's
a great guide here!

We look forward to getting to know you!
