[freenet-support] bug in v.0.3.9.1

2001-05-01 Thread alias

My setup :
PIII450/128mb/win98se/cablemodem
When i updated from v.0.3.8.1 i lost the
configuration window.
The ini-file is there so i can do it manually
though.
Besides from that it seems to work
fine.
Nice work.  It's getting better all the
time.

Re: [freenet-support] "Configure" Option seems broken on Win2k

2001-05-01 Thread Rick F

I'm running win95 and the "Configure" option doesn't
work for me either.

You can edit the freenet.ini file directly (using
notepad or whatever) which will be located in the
freenet folder.

Otherwise, you can download and install 3.8.1 (which
works). Then configure everything you want, then
re-install 3.9.1 when you are done. (Hey at least
freenet is a small install). I think they need to fix
the "configure" in 3.9.1 (at least for windows).

[freenet-support] Bug Report

2001-05-01 Thread Jordan

Freenet Version: 0.3.9.1
OS: Windows 98
Java Runtime Environment: JRE 1.3
Using latest version of Internet Explorer (with
Fproxy)

I received the "Warning: Executable code or
embedded external links in document" message when attempting to retrieve an html
page with a "http-equiv=" tag.  The links on this html page were relative
(i.e. "blank.jpg" instead of http://blabla/blank.jpg).  After seeing
the warning about executable code, I selected "Retrieve anyway," but the links
on this page were not taking into account directory structure.  Files that
should have been pointing to a /a/b/c folder, were instead pointing to main "/"
folder (localhost:8081/blabla.jpg when it should have been
localhost:8081/a/b/c/blabla.jpg).

[freenet-support] "Configure" Option seems broken on Win2k

2001-05-01 Thread Ben Donley

I've tried running with the jre in /WINNT/System/java.exe and I've tried the
javasoft jre. In both cases, on my Win2k box (not running as
administrator), freenet works beautifully, and so does the FProxy, etc. The
only thing that doesnt work is when I use the "Configure" option on the
freenet rabbit in the system tray. When I do that, nothing happens. I
really want to be able to view the configuration tools...

And I figure you've got a million emails describing this exact same problem.
If you don't, and need further testing/explanation, please do tell.
Otherwise, you don't need to waste time replying to me if you don't want to.

Can you be more specific? at what point during the installation
process did you receive this error?

What version of Freenet were you trying to install?

Ian.

You should use a port _other_ than 19114, so that it's harder for
censors to filter out Freenet traffic. Use the random number generator
in your favorite programming tool or spreadsheet, or use port 14646,
which is _your_ personal random lucky number for today.

You will need to be able to make _outgoing_ connections to arbitrary
port numbers, but most firewalls allow this.

Yes, you can submit any type of file. One easy way to do so is to
open http://127.0.0.1:8081/ with your web browser, and fill out the
web form.

Yes, you can run a freenet node on port 80 -- if your OS gives you
permission. (Most people run nodes on high-numbered ports so that
Freenet can run with less privilege.) If you're going to run it on a
low port, port 443 might be good, since it's normally HTTPS, which is
already expected to contain encrypted data.

[freenet-support] How I use Freenet from behind my own firewall

2001-05-01 Thread Jim Hunziker

I'm running an OpenBSD firewall with ipf and ipnat (a stateful, masquerading
firewall, like the stuff in Linux 2.4.x), and I'm using an internal machine
as a Freenet node. I know the node works because I can request data
successfully when using that node locally and I can insert data using that
node that can be retrieved from a machine on a totally different network.

When I first set up the node, it picked a port. For argument's sake, lets
call the port 24334. The interface name for my ethernet card that's visible
to the outside world is ne3. (It's usually eth0 or eth1 for Linux people.)
Inside my ipf.rules, near the top, I added the following:

# my freenet node
pass in log quick on ne3 proto tcp from any to any port = 24334
pass out quick on ne3 proto tcp from any port = 24334 to any keep state

This says to allow packets from the external network that are tcp and are
traveling to port 24334. Also allow replies and connections that my port
24334 makes.
(The log keyword is only there so I know when outside machines are using my
node. This was useful for debugging my ipf and ipnat rules with tcpdump.)

In my ipnat.rules, at the bottom, I added the following:

# redirect freenet requests to my local machine
rdr ne3 0.0.0.0/0 port 24334 -> 192.168.0.2 port 24334 tcp
rdr ne3 0.0.0.0/0 port 24334 -> 192.168.0.2 port 24334 udp

This says to redirect anything from the external network that is destined
for port 24334 to my internal machine's port 24334 instead.

I hope this helps people with firewall problems.

--- Jim

PS: It's possible that the udp line in ipnat.rules is unnecessary and that
the keep state option in the ipf.rules is unnecessary.

[freenet-support] Q: port numbers, and how to test

2001-05-01 Thread Gary Quinn

  Hi All.

I'm new to this, and I have several
(hopefully stupid and therefore easy to
  answer) questions.

  1. I'm behind a firewall, but can probably
get a port number opened up (19114). Is there
a way to find other servers on this port number.
I'm assuming that I need only the one port number.

  2. How do I test the software - can I submit
a file (e.g. a word doc) to the network? Can I
request a file by name - or do I need to know
some key type and resource name? Hmmm, or have
  I completely mis understood?

  3. The large number of port numbers used, makes
life extremely difficult for those of us behind
firewalls. Can I request that only a limited
number of port numbers be used in future revisions
of the software please. I guess like most
in my situation, I can ask for a few port numbers
to be opened up, but I don't have direct control
of the firewall, so I have to be seen to be
  behaving responsibly etc.

  4. Just a thought, but if I use an already open
port number (like port 80 which is usually http),
is this likely to work, or cause havoc :-)
Hmmm, maybe it an irrelevent question, because
I still couldn't get out to others using different
  port numbers.

I have read some of the documentation, but this
is already a complex project, and it's going
to take some time to become properly familiar.

  Cheers,
  Gary.

Did the "gateway page" turn up in the browser anyway? You might want to download the
0.3.9.1
version of Freenet, besides some bugfixes it contains a new implementation of the
system tray icon.

You don't need to do this is you have the system tray icon (hops) visible in the
system tray
