Stop using Internet Explorer.

No, really - I mean it.

There are at this moment three separate ways the owners of a website can hack
into your computer, installing SPAM relays or other trojans, and effectively to
whatever they want with your computer and network. There are no spyware-removal
program, anti virus programs or firewalls that will protect you from this - all
that's needed is that you visit their site (which can be accomplished using some
URL-obfuscating in emails tricking you into thinking you're going to another
site altogether)

Download Opera or Mozilla Firebird, and get a better web browser while also
removing the huge security hole that Internet Explorer is.

No need to move to Linux, as others have suggested, just upgrade your browser:

http://www.opera.com/download
http://www.mozilla.org/products/firebird/download/

(... and if ANYONE on this list is still using Outlook or Outlook Express,
switch immideately. I do assume Freenet users would be interested in personal
privacy ... right?)

No debate regarding this on the list, I can of course back up my statements - in
private Email.

regards,
Troed

Can't help with the rest of it, but the above looks suspiciously like
the sort of thing you might expect some worms, trojans, or spyware to
do. It's not a site that tries to sell things, by chance, or is
blasted with advertising? Your IE may have a parasite -- reinstall it
after uninstalling to remove any trace of the old. Mid-term, turn off
*#&! Javascript -- it turns your browser into a ticking bomb! Lastly,
in the long term, do consider moving to Linux eventually.

You have adware/spyware hijacking your requests. If "Httper" is listed
under Add/Remove Programs, uninstall it. Otherwise, download and run
Ad-Aware or one of the other free spyware removal tools to get fixed up.

What happens when you attempt to download Freenet via Mozilla?

[freenet-support] Problem with Windows (or perhaps Microsoft)

2004-01-21 Thread Nicholas Sturm
Since you announced the last stable release I have been unable to download
a new release.

Background: For about a month I have gotten sporadic replacement of URLs
by Internet Explorer by the following:

http://www.marsfind.com/ufts.php?ver=100&uid=00063dc614af4a85aefef19c015d5f3
d&status=-2146697211
&query=http%3A%2F%2Fstart.earthlink.net%2F

As of the last week it is always replaced when trying to use the I.E.
explorer.

I believe it is a problem that I.E. cannot resolve alphabetic addresses. A
similar event happened on another machine in May 2001 using Windows and I
was never able to resolve the problem (that is, that machine
even with several replacements of different versions of Window will not
access the Internet).

I can use Mozilla as a browser, but having it active does not permit
download of freenet package.

Any suggestions of something to try? Although I've used Linux, I'm not
prepared to really learn to use Linux as a compiler. And I've never used
it for Internet service.

The Capture3 is a sample of the error message given on attempt at download.
