Re: Migrating data to a new profile
paul marwick wrote: I've done this before, but not for a long time, and I can't find my notes on how to do it, or remember the steps I took the last time I needed to do it Since upgrading to 2.0.4, I've noticed some odd rendering problems. The most easily reproduced was on Distorwatch.com, where images that normally appear to the left of the brief write-ups of new releases were not vivivle. Older versions of Seamonkey were displaying them, as was Firefox. After some checking, it looks as though something has got munged in my upgrade. Renaming ~/.mozilla to ~/.mozilla.old and letting Seamonkey create a new profile fixes the problem. What I now need to do is migrate passwords, mail and bookmarks to a new profile. Bookmarks are no problem (obviously), but I can't remember how to migrate the mail, mail settings and passwords to the new profile. Can anyone give me step-by-step instructions? I would also like to be able to share the mail between multiple profiles, but I'm not sure what the best way of doing so is. In the past, I've shared the whole profile amongst a couple of different Linux distros (by creating a symlink from ~/.mozilla to other home directories). While this has worked in the past, I'm wondering if it may have contributed to the recent problem, and I'm also wondering if only sharing the mail would be safer. Paul. Paul the files you are interested in are:- Bookmarks in bookmarks.html Incoming mail in inbox (the one without the .msf, it's only an index file and can be rebuilt when needed.) outgoing mail in sent (the one without the .msf, it's only an index file and can be rebuilt when needed.) Rename the files to oldinbox and oldsent (or whatever) and copy them to the same location as your new inbox and sent file. then, in SeaMonkey, move the contents into your new files. Your passwords, .I'm not sure, maybe someone else! As for sharing profiles, I dual boot Win7 and MandrivaLinux. I have my profile in Win7 and just point my MandrivaLinux SeaMonkey at the Windows location. Not a problem. You should be able to do the same thing in various version of Linux, just point the various SM to the one profile. Fortunately, all accounts were backed-up daily by the system administrators. When I got a shell account on my ISP's Web server in my own address space, one of the first things I did was alias rm='rm -i' I also did the same for cp and mv. I don't think you learned the right lesson. Instead of modifying rm to be rm -i , you probably should have created a new command, say, delfile or whatever. That way, if you're working somewhere other than your usual place and forget and type your usual command to delete with confirmation, you're much more likely to have nothing harmful happen (e.g., just bash: delfile: command not found) rather than deleting more files than you might have meant. Let us know if you've completed the SM new account process with the news server address and port 119, etc. and we can go from there. Don't give up. :) bj I am to that point, in fact, that's how I got to here. the next step for me was to click the 'Automatically request authentication' box. Every time I do that, and it pops up the boxes for filling in the username. I enter my username, even cut/pasted from my activation e-mail. The next box pops up, for the password, and I cut/paste that as well, so make sure I get it right. That's when it gives me the error Invalid Credentials. Now, I DID just recently download Greasemonkey and installed a user script for Google Groups that allows one to ignore users and the like, so, at least in the interim, I don't have to put up with the loony I was looking to avoid, but I would still like to get SM up and running properly. It's a pretty nifty all-in-one program... I like it. It reminds me of older programs... kinda endears me to it. There is NO comparison to using a good newsreader, and having to use Google groups. :) I share your sentiments about SM. Oh! One more thing! How do I tell what server the newsgroup is on, when looking at a Google Group? If I can get that, maybe I can cut right to it without a password. the server I am using currently is news.eternal-september.org. They list alt.religion.wicca as accessible from their server (as you likely know, having give me their link. :) ). Most newsgroups are not directly accessible for users, except through newsgroup or customer services, and each service determines which newsgroups it wants to list. I saw your posts at the ES web site, and tend to agree with the guy who said to delete the ES new account in your Thunderbird or SM reader. I would also empty your *cache*, passwords, check for cookies, and then start over. I had to do that, when they switched names from Motzarella to ES... even though a new registration was supposed to work with my old account settings. It is working now though, as a backup news server for me. bj ___ support-seamonkey mailing list support-seamonkey@lists.mozilla.org https://lists.mozilla.org/listinfo/support-seamonkey
