When is a message marked as read??

Using my Win7 SM, as shown in sig file, I was just reading the posts in m.d.a.seamonkey (I think I had seven new, unread, posts.) I moved my mouse to select an unread, message and all the unread (Bold) messages suddenly became "Read", i.e. light gray. However, the message counts were unchanged
