More trouble with mysoju.com

2010-08-14 Thread Paul B. Gallagher

Can anyone figure this out?

This website hosts videos by embedding them, and the visitor can
normally play them without leaving the site by clicking the play button.
Sometimes this doesn't work, though.

Here's an example:

http://www.mysoju.com/fullscreen/a-good-day-for-the-wind-to-blow/episode-40/part-1/

When I load this page in SM 1.1.16, I get the still image and the play
button, but when I click play, nothing happens. If I click Watch this
video on WAT, a new window opens at
http://www.wat.tv/video/agooddayforthewindtoblow40-2w6nv_2w6mx_.html
and the video autostarts and otherwise plays normally.

When I load the mysoju page in Internet Exploiter 8, I don't get the
still image, and I don't get the play button. Instead, I get an error
message:

Le player WAT a besoin de la version 9.0.115 ou
superiéure, du plugin Flash. Vous avez la version
6.88.0. Cliquez pour mettre à jour votre plugin
gratuitement.
[The WAT player requires Flash plugin version
9.0.115 or higher. You have version 6.88.0.
Click here to update your plugin at no charge.]
Now, this is a mistake, because on checking the Windows Add/Remove
Programs panel, I see that I have Adobe Flash Player 10 plugin and Adobe
Shockwave Player 11.5. Presumably the problem is it doesn't see a
relevant ActiveX control. Where it got the number 6.88.0 I have no idea.

FWIW, SeaMonkey reports Shockwave Flash 10.1 r53, confirming what
Windows says.

Is there something wrong with the code mysoju is using to embed the
video? As I said, I can play them fine at the WAT site, so I don't have
a bad plugin.

Thanks.

Yes. IE is broken in that it allows \ in a server-based URI when the
internationally recognized specification says that \ is not allowed.
You want Gecko (the core for Firefox, SeaMonkey, and others) to be
similarly broken. Most of us would prefer that Gecko not be broken.

being
clever about incorrect URIs containing back-slashes instead of
forward
slashes for hierarchical path separators.

So you said that SM is not clever enough to transform it to a forward
slash ?

No, I said: SM is not 'clever' about, which was meant as SM is not
stupid to. Sorry for not being clear enough.

You are wrong because when i propose to SM the following:
file:///C:/Program Files/Abyss Web Server/htdocs/IMAGES\pose-yoga.jpg
he shows me the picture and modify his URL-adress-zone as follow:
file:///C:/Program Files/Abyss Web Server/htdocs/IMAGES/pose-yoga.jpg

Why SM is clever with file adress and not with webserver adress ?

I think David E. Ross has given you a very probable explanation in
another reply:

news://news.mozilla.org:119/euqdnsazdykfwv7rnz2dnuvz_uadn...@mozilla.org

If you want to find out for real, you could ask the Mozilla devs in a
more technical group.

I will not go further, because SM gurus and devs think they are the best
... it's abnormal that SM works in every possible way except when the
page is on my isp web space. This was causing me lot of understandings
why it did not work when uploaded for online general use.

File structure on the local system follows the rules of the particular
OS involved whereas on a server, the convention in most cases is quite
different and therefore interpreted differently by the browser.

file:/server/directory/file.htm is server based
file:/c:/directory/file.htm is local system based and the browser will
automatically insert two more // such as:

file:///c:/directory/file.htm

Your image is displayed because everything following the file:/// is
interpreted as being formatted locally and local rules apply, therefore
the backslash \ is rendered correctly.

If you try: http://your_server/directory/images\image.jpg will usually
not work because the \ is an illegal character as such in some browsers
but not all browsers. IE guesses that the \ is really a / and will work.

As explained before http://localhost/IMAGES\pose-yoga.jpg with SM works
... localhost is a an access to your_server (mine)

Yes, on YOUR local system, that's my point.

If you try my examples, you'll find that it doesn't work on a remote server:

http://www.ufaq.org/themes/RavenIce/images\logo.gif

local systems are governed by whatever OS you're running locally.

Could you try ... with SM the following:
http://raymond.homedns.org/IMAGES\pose-yoga.jpg

The problem is that i must have my pc up and running my webserver for
you to test ... (i power off my pc when i don't use it - so tell me a
date/time)

For you (and i suppose also that's for me) it's a remote server.

File structure on the local system follows the rules of the particular

 file:/server/directory/file.htm is server based
file:/c:/directory/file.htm is local system based and the browser will

Your image is displayed because everything following the file:/// is
interpreted as being formatted locally and local rules apply, therefore
the backslash \ is rendered correctly.

If you try: http://your_server/directory/images\image.jpg will usually
not work because the \ is an illegal character as such in some browsers

Yes. IE is broken in that it allows \ in a server-based URI when the
internationally recognized specification says that \ is not allowed.
You want Gecko (the core for Firefox, SeaMonkey, and others) to be
similarly broken. Most of us would prefer that Gecko not be broken.

but SM(or Gecko) is broken when he accept \ in a server-based URI when
this server is on my pc.

Yes I agree. Just more mozilla trying be as Like IE as Possible while

Added point:
http://ilias.ca/moznewsgroups-sm
shows how to use nntp for the news.mozilla.org newsgroups. It would be
helpful if the basic
 http://www.seamonkey-project.org/community
page took some initiative and create a *useful* howto support page. That
page does point to Chris' page via:

SeaMonkey Help

Contributed by a long-time SeaMonkey fan, this page hosts various
user support documents as well as a document describing the differences
between Firefox/Thunderbird and SeaMonkey very well.

but Chris has been trying to get rid of, or sell off the page for some
time. SM should step up and create a proper FAQ/Wiki page of it's own
(perhaps by coordinating with Chris to port http://seamonkey.ilias.ca/.
[Thanks Chris]

BTW:
For a perspective of the wider Mozilla community that we are a part of,
read the mozilla.org community page.
http://www.mozilla.org/community/
doesn't have anything regarding SeaMonkey...

 WFM, with SM 2.0.6. -JW

Doesn't here with any browser, get this:

Failed to Connect

It had worked for me on SM 2.1, but now there is a problem with the server.
