Obviously :-)
I meant a SM setting to *automatically open a new window with a fixed
max-width*. In my case 2048px would be fine, instead of 2560px which is the
current dimension.

If you set SeaMonkey to download only threads with unread messages, you would
not download thousands of them.

Hi,

you mean under "synchronization" -> to save disk space don't download "read

Well, I thought SM was smart enough not to download again all the messages I've

Pro - hide your dns traffic from your ISP, sidestep ISP/Country blocks
for "bad" hostnames

Like using a VPN that also offers DNS server service, just with even more
privacy I tink.

Con - google. cloudflare, whatever sees all your name resolution
requests, no ability to monitor or block name resolution requests on
your own (eg. family safe or gambling filters)

If you think you might want DOH then you should take a look at TOR
   https://www.torproject.org/
better privacy, but riskier since anyone can put up an exit node and
do whatever (at the very least, do not enable javascript from
unencrypted pages)

[...]

I'm testing NextDNS on Firefox (you can also set it on routers, single
computers, whatever) and it allows to use a whitelist in case any website you
need is blocked because they also filter tracking links.

I'm not going to use Cloudflare for DoH even if their resolvers are really fast.

How to separate Mail vs News accounts off-line syncronization?

2019-09-17 Thread Gabriel

Hello,

there's an odd issue when I want to download off-line all my accounts.
The problem is SM doesn't has AFAIK a setting to separate the synchronization of
the email accounts and the news one.
So when I go in offline mode it starts with the news account which lasts forever
to download, while I usually want to synchronize the email accounts first. If I
click on "cancel" when I'm asked for the NG credentials, SM enters in a loop
instead of stopping the news download!
I also don't understand why it keeps downloading everything as it was the first
time instead of doing an incremental backup, and this is a real problem because
some groups have more than 800.000 messages!

So, do you know a way to not automatically download all the NGs but still do it
with the email accounts?

Thank you.

Hi,

A big thanks to the developers on the release of 2.49.5

Seamonky 2.49.5 fixed a website that did not display correctly. Once again
thanks.

I would like to help out and test 2.53.x--I am hesitant since I have heard that
once you have installed 2.53.x the user profile changes and is no longer
compatible with 2.49.x so I am hesitant to do any testing. Maybe when 2.53 is
ready for full time use I will consider testing and filing bugs.

Thanks developers and testers. BTW I am using MacOS.

Hi, please do it as you're using macOS! So we can compare our experience.
If you use Time Machine you can go back to the previous profile, or just
compress the current profile (it's inside
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Application Support/SeaMonkey/Profiles/xxx.default)
and then if it's not working you just decompress it and go back.

I'm using 2.53 since a few monts and I have an odd problem affecting the GPU or
something that after a certain period of time makes the screen "flashing" just
like the video was broken and I need to shut off the Mac and restart. This is
happening more often if I use the Mail and News section of SeaMonkey; I also
noticed it happens less if I go in off-line several times a day. Very weird!

So I'd appreciate if you could try SM 2.53 on your Mac and tell me if it's
working fine.

NB: my sessionstore.json file is now about 18MB (it was up to 40 before).

So what do you thing about all this mess?

My mac mini only has Intel Graphics so if it works with the later versions

3 things: Bad hardware, bad driver or a bug in a different macOS component.
There might be a bug or sequence in SeaMonkey session restore or mozilla code
which triggers it for SeaMonkey only.

Overall I am not seeing a spike in crashes with 2.53. Not one for macOS.

So now after 1 month the sessionstore file grew from 2 MB up to 30 MB! And I had

I'll send you the sessionstore.json.
Anyway I fixed the problem this way: using the MacBook I converted all the tabs
in bookmarks, then the opposite in my iMac. Now the sessionstore file is about
2,1 MB instead of more than 40 MB! I have 10 windows for a total of about 310 tabs.

Session restore in SeaMonkey and Firefox differs so that is one area where

Ultimately it is a macOS bug. The only guy in our team who runs it under macOS
is unable to upgrade because he has an older mac.

Hi, I did a few other tests and the result is interesting.
I installed Mojave on an empty external HDD and put SM 2.53 on it, then used it
to boot a MacBook Pro retina mid-2014 and it worked; I then copied in the
profile folder my "corrupted" sessionstore file and... it didn't crash!

I moved this HDD to my iMac 5K late-2015: badly crashed.
The main difference between these two Mac is the GPU and on my iMac it's the
GPU which is going crazy with SM and it restarts the whole machine.

The MBP has an Intel Iris Pro (1536 MB), the iMac an AMD Radeon R9 M390 2GB.

I also switched off the hardware acceleration in SM on the iMac but that didn't
help, on or off it's the same.

So: my (big) sessionstore.json + iMac 10.14.5 with AMD R9 390 = crash.

What I'm also wondering is why neither of SM and Mojave create a crash report!
macOS doesn't send the usual crash report after the reboot and the "crashes"
folder in SM is empty.

So what do you thing about all this mess?

Hi,
I did other tests and now I think the "culprit" is my profile.
First of all, my default boot disk is an external one (cause it's bigger than
the original internal HD), so I installed SM 2.49.4 - 2.53 - 2.57 on the
internal HDD and started the iMac with only that disk. Then I did a complete
Mojave 10.14.5 installation.
So with a new profile I ran all 3 SM versions: they all worked (but in 2.57 the
Mail doesn't, so I deleted it).
BUT when I started SM 2.53 using my original profile, the iMac crashed again
with the same weird effects, the screen goes crazy like if the GPU was faulty.

So the question is: how is it possible that a (damaged) profile can crash
Mojave hard?

And, most important, is there a way to know which file of the profile is
damaged?

Thank you :-)

If the kernal panics it is an apple bug even if other programs work fine. A

I did all sort of tests, CPU/GPU/RAM are fine, all the programs are working

2.53 which is causing the crashing.

SM 2.53 macOS really high memory and CPU usage

2019-04-16 Thread Gabriel
Hi, I'm opening a new thread about a previous topic cause this is for the 2.53
release on macOS:
User agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10.14; rv:60.0)
Gecko/20100101 Firefox/60.0 SeaMonkey/2.53

Build identifier: 20190329130005

Built from: https://hg.mozilla.org/releases/comm-esr60/rev/47a22611c960

I really like the debug menu in this version, especially the Performance and
Memory pages.

The problem is the RAM usage on my iMac 5K (24Gb RAM).
I reseted the cache memory configuration to the "auto" setting (-1) that I
previously had set to about 6GB, and now SM takes from 7 up to 12GB!

these are the current values:
- memory: 9,85 GB
- real memory: 5,02 GB
- compressed memory: 4,83 GB

With SM 2.49.4 I had a total of about 4/5 GB.

What is causing the annoying "colored rotating wheel" for about 30/60 seconds
it's apparently a news server I added for all the NGs I'm following (about 20,
with low volumes of messages): ssl-eu.astraweb.com
I'm pretty sure of this because SM doesn't hang so much when I'm only browsing
websites or using my several IMAP accounts.

I think also the CPU usage is too high, even when SM is in background and in
off-line mode it uses almost the double than Firefox!

In the about:memory page I see some errors:
=
WARNING: the following values are negative or unreasonably large.

explicit/(24 tiny)
explicit/(24 tiny)/heap-unclassified
page-faults-soft

This indicates a defect in one or more memory reporters. The invalid values are
highlighted.

=

Even if I select all the option in the "Free Memory" panel nothing changes.

Can you suggest something to ameliorate the SM behaviour? Or is it the 2.57
version better?

Thank you.

Nothing. Just have a profile backup ready in case you want to go back to 2.49.x.
I am using it daily on Windows and also tested on macOS.
Just be advised that it is 64 bit only (shouldn't be a problem) and also that
binary extensions and plugins other than Flash and no longer work.

Some classic extensions might need updates but latest classic NoScript and

No. Facebook, LinkedIn, etc. are the big memory and CPU hoggers in my
SeaMonkey usages especially with multiple tabs. I always have to exit and
relaunch SM to regain them after using these web sites. :(

Maybe. But I see that Facebook or Linkedin eat less memory when I open
them on Firefox or Chromium...

SeaMonkey v2.49.4 (basically Firefox v52) is still using old Gecko engine
compared to the (new/lat)est Firefox web browsers that use Quantum. :(

Hi, I'm using both Firefox and SeaMonkey (and Safari) and I see a lot of
differences in speed and hangs.
Firefox does not hang even with a lot of tabs (and many Facebook pages and
groups in different tabs, YouTube videos and other huge websites), while I have
SM blocked many times a day.

And this is on iMac 5K with 24GB of RAM!

One main difference I see on macOS between Firefox and SM is that FF splits the
load in several processes (they were 4, now 8 with FF 66) while SM is just one
big application.

Eg. now I have:
- SeaMonkey 3,58 GB
- Firefox 825 MB
- FirefoxCP WebExtensions 362 MB
- FirefoxCP Web Content 485 MB
- FirefoxCP Web Content 425 MB
- FirefoxCP Web Content 206 MB

Why this is not applied to SM?

What I see here is what I've seen many times before. In a 32 bit environment,
memory constraints are very important, on OS level and application level. All
kinds of settings are done with the mindset of conserving memory.

When the OS or the application is moved to 64 bit, very often no one thinks
about removing memory constraints, so applications still run as if they were
32 bit applications. What should be done is checking all kind of memory
settings, and change these settings to let them use (much) more memory. After
all, that is the only purpose of 64 bit operating systems and applications,
make it possible to use more memory!

[cut]

Hello,

I really would like an official answer from the SM developers on this matter.
I followed your advice to increase the allocated RAM (on the previous thread
about it) to 4GB and *nothing* has ameliorate.
*But* I'm on macOS and I've always seen SM using a lot of RAM, really too much
for a (modern) browser that should load the tabs only when they are actually
in use. It should not matter if there are 150 tabs, but only 30 are loaded
because you are reading these websites.

SeaMonkey for macOS is already 64bit.

Still my SM 2.49.4 is hanging a lot of times a day, with CPU spikes to 90/100%
and the colored spinning wheel for 30 seconds. I observed this is happening
more often since I added a new news-server (astraweb).

Any clue?

Thank you.

It could have something to do with network settings in Seamonkey. For instance
there is a setting network.http.max-connections , you can try to increase it. I
have it at 512 at the moment.

In SM for macOS the default is already at 900!

There are many other of those kind of settings that I have increased over time
to remove restrictions. It seems you are running into some kind of restriction
somewhere, and now we have to figure out which one it is.

It would be useful to have a list with the details.
I now increased "network.http.max-persistent-connections-per-server" from 6 to
8.
I can't find a specific setting for the news-servers, but I also increasd
"network.websocket.max-connections" from 200 to 400.

about removing memory constraints, so applications still run as if they were 32
bit applications. What should be done is checking all kind of memory settings,
and change these settings to let them use (much) more memory. After all, that is
the only purpose of 64 bit operating systems and applications, make it possible
to use more memory!

[cut]

Hello,

I really would like an official answer from the SM developers on this matter.
I followed your advice to increase the allocated RAM (on the previous thread
about it) to 4GB and *nothing* has ameliorate.
*But* I'm on macOS and I've always seen SM using a lot of RAM, really too much
for a (modern) browser that should load the tabs only when they are actually in
use. It should not matter if there are 150 tabs, but only 30 are loaded because
you are reading these websites.

SeaMonkey for macOS is already 64bit.

Still my SM 2.49.4 is hanging a lot of times a day, with CPU spikes to 90/100%
and the colored spinning wheel for 30 seconds. I observed this is happening more
often since I added a new news-server (astraweb).

Any clue?

Thank you.

That is the disk cache, so files on disk, I'm talking about the memory cache, in
RAM.

Maybe that setting is Windows only, because on my Mac I see SM using a lot of
RAM between 3 and 5 GB (I have 24 GB) and it's not so fast anyway (it often
freezes), even if the value for "browser.cache.memory.capacity" is "20".

Shouldn't be the OS to decide the amount of RAM?

Do you know what "browser.cache.memory.max_entry_size" is about?

A OK :-)
I was always on-line.

If that connectiod thingee is showing you as on-line, when you select a message,
SeaMonkey tries to get on-line and download the message ... and fails miserably!
I don't know how your Cmd-U fits into this!!

That's why. So also the cmd-U "source" should fail, but it's not. This is why I

Wow. Isn't there a known bug in macOS Mojave with SM?

I now deleted the webappsstore.sqlite file, and will monitor its size (after

The real problem is the RAM usage. No other issues, apart I can't add a photo to

I had to restore my (big) sessionstore.json from TimeMachine.

Eg: if you select the Help menu on Toast 14, it opens SM and a Roxio webpage,
the sessionstore will record only that page.

After 1 year, the bug is still there!

Every time SeaMonkey is launched from another application to open an URL, all

And the sessionstore.bak does not save a previous copy, I'm wondering what's its
purpose.

Go into your profile data folder.
ImapMail/server_name/

and the files without .msf contain the message data
(one file per mail folder)

I wouldn't call modifying those particularly safe, although it should be
possible. If you decide to try, make a backup of your profile first and
carefully check the affected folders afterwards.

Apart from moving the mail content from one file to another (the files
without extensions) you might also need to delete the corresponding .msf
files so SeaMonkey regenerates the indexes.

I would create a epty new folder called temp. This should be 0 bytes.
Then I would copy the whole file, and use SM to delete unwanted messages.

Hello,

I had to manually create the folders (name.sbd) and then I copied the Inbox and
other files inside of it. If you create the empty folder from SM instead, you
get a file.

Anyway, it's working now.

I'm wondering why SM didn't actually delete the IMAP folders at Finder level
when I deleted the accounts, I'm going to open a new thread about this.

Can you actually open the message from where it is and read the content, or do
you only see the subject, date, etc. in the list of messages? If you can't open
the message, it may be that only the headers are downloaded, not the full
message.

I see the whole message, because I've already selected to synchronize the

but when I try to drag-and-drop to move them to a local folder
nothing happens, and if I use the menu move/copy SM alerts me that the

So, how can I move them to another folder?

You could try setting SeaMonkey to offline mode - File > Offline > Work
Offline. I don't know if that will work, but it might be enough to tell
SeaMonkey to work with the cached copy, rather than trying to get any updates
from the server first.

It is working with the cached copy, because the mail server has been shut off.
The domain doesn't even exist anymore.

You may also have more luck copying rather than moving the message, since that
won't try to delete the copy off the server.

Nothing happens. This is really odd. Do you know if there's a safe way to move
it "manually"?

That's a positive sign. Do as you usually do, beat it up, give it a
good kicking and use it as you normally would. And you are at 10.11.3
right (was just released today, soon to followed by 10.11.4)? We've
noticed a large performance increase in going from 10.11.1 to 10.11.2
at my org. Haven't yet bumped to 10.11.3, waiting on the Guinea pigs
first. ;-)

Hi,

after 15 hours the used memory grown up to about 2.4GB (medium I'd say 1.8/2)
but some 40% was compressed. I think SM 2.40 is still normally usable even if
using a lot of RAM, while the previous versions become s slow with the same
values.

Also the connections to my mail server are faster.
I'm with OS X 10.11.3 now.

1. Add Apple.com to Flashblock's whitelist. To do this go to Tools-Add-ons

Hi Paul,

I dont' have Flashblock on SM (I have it on FF), so I went to the plugins
settings and changed the QuickTime option to always active instead of ask

I think there's a little bug in the activation process when the QuickTime

does anyone know how to (if it's possible) install the 1Password extension in
SM?
It does work with Firefox :
https://agilebits.com/onepassword/extensions/firefox?beta=false

thank you
G.

See if this will help you: http://addonconverter.fotokraina.com/

Thank you, I tried it but it didn't work.
The extension was installed, I see it in the add-ons manager, but it doesn't
display in the toolbar.

I'm going to ask for support in the AgileBits forum.

does someone know how to check what is causing SM to crash every time I

Does the Mozilla Crash Reporter come up? If so,
1. Open SeaMonkey.
2. Go to Help--Troubleshooting_Information. That should open a new tab with
info about your Firefox setup.
3. Under Crash Reports for the Last 3 Days click on your latest crash report.
That should take you to a web page starting with
https://crash-stats.mozilla.com/report/index/;
4. Open a reply to this post and paste the address of your latest crash report.
We can then look at the data specific to your crash and have a better idea of
what is causing the problem.

Hi,

the problem was not fixed in SM 2.30
User agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10.6; rv:33.0)
Gecko/20100101 Firefox/33.0 SeaMonkey/2.30

Build identifier: 20141014004953

https://crash-stats.mozilla.com/report/index/ee3d8c0f-9973-47b3-9e6d-399622141101

Do you know if someone is working on this IMAP compacting bug to fix it?

thank you!
