PS: does SM 2.53.3 work with macOS Catalina?
In my Win 7 SM 2.49.5, if I select File -> Off line -> Download/Sync Now, a
screen pops up where I can select to Download 'Mail messages' and/or
'Newsgroup messages'. I'm guessing if I don't want to download 'Newsgroup
messages', I'd deselect it!
That would solve my issue!

Hi, just to compare, given we are using different OS and SM versions...
OK, the issue is SM behaves differently if you select the menu as you suggested
(that gives the option to download only email or NGs or both) VS what I usually
do just by clicking the "connection icon" in the Mail window. In this case there
are no options at all and if you click on "cancel" when asked for the news
server credentials SM gets stuck in a loop!
I consider this a bug, SM should just stop asking for username/password in that
case and go on downloading only Mail.
Anyway, thank you for the workaround :-)
