The inability to close down or rename old newsgroups is one of the
reasons why these groups are not fed to Usenet.

In addition, the mailing lists of some of the to-be-terminated
newsgroups are gated through gmane, eg
gmane.comp.mozilla.seamonkey.user, gmane.comp.mozilla.announce.

If replacement mailing lists are needed then Freelists
would seem to be the obvious solution,
having a "business model" similar to that of SeaMonkey.

So, what are the options for finding out about new releases after
this newsgroup is gone?

Bob

Depending on which operating system platform you are using, and, how
it is done for the operating system that you use, in Ubuntu Linux, I
have added the sourceforge ubuntuzilla repository to my sources file,
for upgrades, so that, whenever I perform a system upgrade, that
repository is checked for upgrades to Seamonkey, and, in performing a
system upgrade on my other computer, at present, I have observed that
it is performing an upgrade to Seamonkey.

Which means the repo has a maintainer.

Updates to direct installs from SeaMonkey on any operating system have
been disabled for a long time.

Might the repo maintainer be able to fix it for all of us, or does it do
a complete install over the current version?

It shows (it was done as a command line upgrade, on both of my
computers that I have just upgraded) as an upgrade, rather than as a
new package installation (which is what is shown, for kernel
upgrades).

The package is seamonkey-mozilla-build amd 64 2.53.7-0ubuntu1 so what
I have upgraded, is specific to Ubuntu Linux (as is ubuntuzilla, I
believe), and, I expect that it would not work with Fedora Linux
(which is from (some years ago) Red Hat Linux), which, I believe, uses
rpm packages, rather than deb packages.

What I suggest, is that, for each operating system, the Seamonkey user
does a google search for
seamonkey upgrade
and, hopefully, the results returned, will include a howto, that steps
through the instructions for installing/upgrading seamonkey, for the
particular operating system.

I believe that that is how I found the Sourceforge ubuntuzilla
repository, and, how to apply it, for installing and upgrading
seamonkry on Ubuntu Linux.

I'll stick with getting the application from the SeaMonkey Project site,
and install until/if updates work again.

I only have it installed to provide what little support I can, not being
a user.

With this newsgroup gone, that only leaves the SeaMonkey topic on
mozillaZine to deal with. That's not very active and there are more
knowledgeable users there.

Subject: **THIS FORUM WILL BE SHUT DOWN SOON**
To: mozilla-support-fire...@lists.mozilla.org

*WHAT IS HAPPENING*
Mozilla is shutting down the newsgroup server (news.mozilla.org) and
mailing lists (list.mozilla.org).

*WHEN IT IS GOING TO HAPPEN*
lists.mozilla.org: April 3
news.mozilla.org: Sometime after April 3

*WHAT YOU WILL EXPERIENCE*
Because all posts to this newsgroup go through the mailing list, no
messages will be approved after April 3. You will still be able to
access news.mozilla.org, but there will be no new posts in this
newsgroup after that. If you try to post a message, it will just not appear.

Sometime after that, Giganews will shut down news.mozilla.org, and you
will no longer be able to access the newsgroup.

*WHERE TO FIND THE ARCHIVE*
The archive of this newsgroup will be kept intact at
https://groups.google.com/group/mozilla.support.firefox/
As with other newsgroups that have been shuttered in the past, the
archive will be read-only.

If you're using Thunderbird, you can also download all messages before
the news server is shut down.
1. In your Local Folders account, create a new folder called
"mozilla.support.firefox"
2. Open the newsgroup, then go to Edit-->Select-->All.
3. Go to Message-->Move_to-->Local_Folders-->mozilla.support.firefox
NOTE: There are over 190,000 messages, so it will take a long time to
download. You may want to select batches of messages instead of
selecting all.

*WHERE TO GO FOR SUPPORT*
The primary Firefox support forum is at
https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/firefox?show=all
Other languages can be found at
https://support.mozilla.org/kb/get-community-support

If you prefer newsgroups, there may be newsgroups on Usenet where you
can find Firefox support. If not, try netscape.public.mozilla.browser.

*WHY THIS IS HAPPENING*
Mozilla has been migrating off of mailing lists and newsgroups for many
years now. Many of the mailing lists have already closed down and moved
to https://discourse.mozilla.org/
Even though a support web forum already exists, the support
newsgroups/lists have remained open for the lifetime of the server.

*WHERE TO ASK QUESTIONS ABOUT THIS ANNOUNCEMENT*
You can reply to this post, and I'll try to answer any questions.
If you have questions after the shutdown, you can find me in the
#firefox chat room at
https://chat.mozilla.org/#/room/#firefox:mozilla.org or the #sumo chat

Upgrading has been broken for several versions so you need to do a new
installation.

The SeaMonkey project is proud to present SeaMonkey 2.53.6: The new
release of the all-in-one Internet suite is available for download now
! 2.53.6 is an incremental
update from the 2.53.x branch and incorporates a number of changes,
including improved usability of multiple mailboxes/folders selection,
Greek localization, and fixes from the underlying platform code.
*Before installing it make a full backup of your profile and
thoroughly read and follow the Release Notes
*.

At the very top of those Release Notes it states:

*You MUST absolutely do a full backup of your profile before upgrading
from a version earlier than SeaMonkey 2.53.1. This version of
SeaMonkey makes changes to your profile that can't be reverted in
cases where you need to go back to the older version.*

*Automatic upgrades from previous versions are currently disabled for
this release. Please download the full installer from the downloads
section and install SeaMonkey 2.53.6 manually over the previous version.*

Hope that helps.

Save the file.
Use File > Open > Calendar File

The calendar is added.

Easiest way I know how to do the process.

Probably why the Lightning calendar developers coded it that way.

On my Win7 installation (updated from SM 2.49.5), after the update,
I had Lightning starting at SM bootup, but not in Linux which I
have updated, today, from SM 2.49.1 yes 2.49.1.

Now I seem to recall that in SM 2.49.1, Lightning wasn't "inbuilt"
but by 2.49.5, it was.

So, when I updated my *Win7* SM from 2.49.5, Lightning
worked/works, but in Linux (now 2.53.6), checking the Add-ons
Manager, Lightning is there but I only have the option to "Remove"
because "Lightning is incompatible with SeaMonkey 2.53.6"

How can I get my Lightning up and running??

(Note: when I say I've updated SM, I mean I have installed Linux SM
2.53.6 in parallel (new location) with SM 2.49.1, but using the
same profile!)

 From https://www.seamonkey-project.org/releases/seamonkey2.53.6/
section "Known Issues":
Lightning or one of the distributed extensions is not showing up or
is disabled under Add-ons.
If the extension is disabled and can not be enabled deinstall it.
If it does not show up after restart do the following:

Enter "about:config" in the location bar.
Enter "extensions.installedDistroAddon" in the search field.
Reset the key of the extension not showing up using the popup
menu with the mouse. If in doubt just reset all keys, but this
might bring back previously uninstalled distributed Add-ons.

    Restart SeaMonkey.

Thanks for this, Don.

When I entered "extensions.installedDistroAddon" in the search field,
I had four keys listed

extensions.installeddistroaddon.debu...@mozilla.org;modified;true;boolean

extensions.installeddistroaddon.inspec...@mozilla.org;modified;true;boolean

extensions.installedDistroAddon.{59c81df5-4b7a-477b-912d-4e0fdf64e5f2};modified;true;true

extensions.installedDistroAddon.{e2fda1a4-762b-4020-b5ad-a41df1933103};modified;true;true

So I reset the third and fourth keys and, when I restarted SeaMonkey,
I had just the first two keys left and still no
Lightning/Calendar!! ;-(

Should I try resetting the first two (even though they appear to be
totally disconnected with Lightning/Calendar)??

Did you first uninstall any version of Lightning currently installed
in your profile?  It might show up as disabled in the Add-ons manager,
but still needs to be uninstalled so that the new bundled version can
be installed.  I think once the bundled version has been installed by
one version of SeaMonkey, it gets automatically updated in future, but
not sure if that happens if you already have a version installed from
before SeaMonkey started bundling it.  So uninstall any existing
version of Lightning, then reset the pref (it looks like
{e2fda1a4-762b-4020-b5ad-a41df1933103} is the one for Lightning),
restart SeaMonkey and hopefully it will install automatically.

If that's still not working, the XPI file for the extension is
installed along with SeaMonkey, so you might be able to install it
into your profile from there.  From the add-ons manager, click the cog
near the top-right corner, choose "Install Add-on From File" and
select the XPI file.  On my Linux system, it's at
/opt/seamonkey/distribution/extensions/e2fda1a4-762b-4020-b5ad-a41df1933103}.xpi,
so I'd guess on Windows the path would be something like "C:\Program
Files\SeaMonkey\..." or perhaps "C:\Program Files\Mozilla\SeaMonkey\...".

Lightning is quite closely tied to SeaMonkey, so you need compatible
versions.  Aside from the other problems with sharing a single profile
between multiple SeaMonkey versions, you may find that Lightning only
works in one version, since you can only have one version of Lightning
installed in that profile.  I think Lightning is also one of a few
OS-specific extensions, so you might also find that it only works in
whichever OS you installed Lightning for even if the versions are
otherwise identical (I'm almost certain that at least used to be the
case - not entirely sure whether it still is).

Thanks for that, Mark.

As I just replied to Don, I downloaded the xpi file from the Thunderbird
Add-ons page and was going to install it later, but given your
suggestion of the cog near the top-right corner, I just gave it a go
 and failed.

Maybe I'll have to look harder for the SeaMonkey Add-ons page (which I
thought was hosted by Thunderbird) or, maybe, fed the Thunderbird
extension through the SeaMonkey Extensions convert page.

Still sharing profiles?

I think that is your problem and you might want to try a new test
profile on each platform.

happening back when I was using 2.49.4.

Answering my own question, I don't have this problem with
mozilla.general of any of the lower-traffic newsgroups I'm using on this
server.  It looks to me as though mozilla.support.seamonkey has lost
most of its history.

Don, if I set my SM 2.49.1 to View -> Threads -> All, I can see that, at
17:14 (my time) 06/08/19, you replied in a thread in this newsgroup
titled "Seamonkey mail ebay". Can you not see this??

I'm guessing there is only so much storage allocated to each newsgroup
and once that space is full the messages are over-written.

Hmm! Perhaps if we snipped better, the older threads would last
longer!! ;-P

And then, just as I was snipping my post, I see a reference to
groups.google.com, maybe their storage is lessor than what mozilla
allocate!!

My provider has (almost) all newsgroups, but removes old messsages
after a few days(3-4?) (at news.planet.nl).
OP should check the rules for his provider,

AIUI the rule for news.mozilla.org is that no old messages are removed
and are also archived on Google Groups.

<https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/about/forums/>

The occasional post may get removed in a moderated forum if the posting
rules are broken.

Is that toolbar provided by Seamonkey or by Ubuntu? I think you should
be looking at the configuration options provided there rather than by
Seamonkey - my toolbar is courtesy of OpenSuse/KDE and I get pretty well
as much text as will fit down there.

AFAIK Ubuntu doesn't supply SeaMonkey from the main repository or build it.

If we are talking about the Bookmarks toolbar (there are several
toolbars) hovering the mouse pointer over the text in the Bookmarks
toolbar will show a tool tip with all the text.

Which leaves room for more items on the toolbar.

YMMV

I got more room on the toolbar by lowering the font size.
/*
Changes font size for BOOKMARKS TOOLBAR
*/

#personal-bookmarks {
font-size:6pt !important;
}

Well, all of my bookmarks are in folders on the Bookmarks toolbar with
much shortened names by selecting Properties from the right-click
context menu and editing the name.

So, I will stick with the tool tips.

Old or latest. Flash is dead.

Doesn't matter what version of browser still supports it. The

"Since Adobe will no longer be supporting Flash Player after December
31, 2020 and Adobe will block Flash content from running in Flash
Player beginning January 12, 2021, Adobe strongly recommends all users
immediately uninstall Flash Player to help protect their systems."

Adobe doesn't/didn't mediate Flash content, except by the player.

The "block" only applies if you use a version of the Flash player that
includes a time cut-off in the player code
<http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=2cded5796f2faf5792dcc3b3779002af&p=1919655#post1919655>.
Older versions do not include such a "block". Also, I'm sure it would be
possible to spoof the date+time to the player if it was necessary to
avoid the time cut-off.

Users of permanent beta browsers such as Chrome and non-ESR Firefox may
well have been updated to a version that disallows any Flash version,
but that's a separate issue.

OP's problem appears to be that some issue with Flashpoint/Mac OS is
causing Flashpoint to use her latest and greatest "blocked" player
instead of it providing and enabling a version suitable for the game she
is trying to play.

Is your Flashpoint on the same comp or hdd as your SM?
It is my understanding that SM has disabled NPAPI in your SM version.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NPAPI
Personally, I will stick with SM 2.49.3 until it no longer works with
any websites.

Flash is dead as of yesterday.

<https://tech.slashdot.org/story/21/01/12/2133218/adobe-flash-is-officially-dead-after-25-years-with-content-blocked-starting-today>

True but not relevant to OP's problem which concerns SM in the context
of a game archive package that provides appropriate (and not blocked)
players for the formats, such as Flash, that its archived games need.

The first 2 console errors shown are not exceptional.

SM 2.53.5.1 is supposed to support Flash (and no other plugins) via
NPAPI. Perhaps the detection of older Flash versions isn't working
properly?

The Flashpoint site says that Mac OS support is highly experimental. You
might do better to ask there.

1. Start a fresh SeaMonkey browser instance

3. Press Ctrl+2 to open the mail client

Result: The folder and message lists are empty.

This only seems to happen when the developer tools are open. Not sure if
this is new in 2.53.6.

It isn't new.

I can reproduce using SM 2.53.5.1 on Ubuntu 18.04 LTS Linux.

I can confirm no thumbnails on that site in my 2.53.5.1 on Ubuntu 18.04.

Are you using CSS or an extension that provided the indicator?

I see a Tab Numbers extension when I do a search in the Add-ons

<https://addons.thunderbird.net/en-US/seamonkey/addon/tab-numbers/>

Nothing for an active tab.

.
I don't remember what made my Tabs indicate the current, in use

It had a bright colored number that showed which tab I was IN at
the moment.
Now it is hard to tell in a string of many tabs.   I find some
feature and install
it back somewhere in the past (days to years) and then forget
how/where I

got it.

The extension I linked to in my previous response adds a bright
colored number to the tabs. I don't know if it shows which tab you
are in at the moment.

.
I installed it.  No bright colored numbers show up (?) - after
exiting windows

and restarting my compuker.

Is there a toggle that I need to throw ?

DB

Not that I can find.

I installed it and a new tab opened with a number, the Firefox logo,
and "Congratulations! Tab Numbers installed successfully. You can
right now start using your new add-on." as part of the tabs page.

I click a different tab and the number highlights in red while the
others fade.

It even works in the Mail & Newsgroups window.

  I installed it AGAIN 2x even !

You can have as many versions of SM available on the HDD as you have
space for.  I currently have ten.

You *can* do that, provided you just unpack them from zip

Since the first Netscape I have used nothing but ZIP distros.  And that
includes SM, FF, TB, and all the derivatives.

Anyone with enough interest to get to this list has the ability to copy

you want, and name them anything you want

The SeaMonkey .exe installer doesn't have the ability to select a Custom

I can right-click on the Linux seamonkey-2.53.5.1.tar.bz2 file and

Silly me, expecting the configuration to be available via seamonkey mail, I

not directed at you Daniel, just pointing out the logic i followed.

Managed to achieve this but still cannot get SMmail to deal with the issue properly, i
compose and send a mail formatted as unicode and in my "sent" mail box it tries
to display it in some other format resulting in strange characters like
"Hi
I have spent a few hours researching your issues with"

so imagine most other clients will do the same if SM cannot correctly detect
it's own formatting..

Isn't mail encoding in the Preferences > Mail & Newsgroups > Text
Encoding section?

Mine is set to "Default for Current Locale" for both Fallback and
Composing in SM 2.53.5.1.

The mail composition window has selections under Options > Text Encoding
where mine is set to "Unicode". That must be the default for my current
location.

I would try copying the msgFilterRules.dat file from the working account

Use Help > Troubleshooting Information or just type about:support into

Find the Profile Directory entry in the Account Basics section.
Click the Open Directory button.
Find the Mail or ImapMail folder.
Open the folder.
Find the account the filters are created for and open the folder.
Copy the msgFilterRules.dat file.
Find the account where you want to add the rules and paste the file into it.

Quit and restart SeaMonkey.
Open Mail & Newsgroups.
You may need to run the filters once to do some training.

The way it works on Linux distros is really much better than I
remember on Windows where individual apps had their own updaters with
their own schedules, installers, and admin rights. On Linux distros,
you run a simple command and the whole o/s (and all apps) offer their
updates.

The issue for Edmund is trying to ensure that, when SeaMonkey is built
by a distro and installed via their package manager, SeaMonkey's
built-in updater doesn't interfere with that.  The system package keeps
track of files it installs, so that they can be removed as necessary
when the package is updated or uninstalled.  If SeaMonkey installed an
update through its own mechanism, that would be outside the control and
knowledge of the system's package manager and could break future updates
and uninstalls.

 > Some applications provide a build-time option to disable automatic
updates.  I don't know if SeaMonkey has such an option, but if it does
the onus might be on the people building packages for distros to use
that option to disable SeaMonkey's updates.  Not sure where that would
leave Ubuntuzilla though, as I think they simply package the official
builds, so probably wouldn't be compiled with that option.

The Firefox and Thunderbird builds built by Ubuntu have
"--disable-updater" in the configure options.

Ubuntu doesn't provide SeaMonkey in its main repo anymore.

For SeaMonkey on Ubuntu (and its derivatives such as Mint), there's the
Ubuntuzilla repository:

https://sourceforge.net/p/ubuntuzilla/wiki/Main_Page/

I'm not interested in adding any other repositories.

I have to download and install each new version over the old. An
internal app update mechanism would be greatly appreciated.

Even if SeaMonkey's built-in updater did work, personally I'd still use
Ubuntuzilla since I find it more convenient to manage updates through
the system's package manager, along with everything else.

I'd rather use the SeaMonkey built-in updater since the system's package
manager doesn't provide the application.

I actually prefer the Windows way of installing and updating the
applications from their developers.

I haven't tried installing yet, buy I only have Windows Defender on my

I recommend disabling Avast and ZoneAlarm and retrying.

G.Ross

Javascript (as opposed to Java) is natively supported by pretty much
all browsers, if that site thinks you don't have it then I see two
possibilities:

- You have turned it off (Preferences -> Advanced -> Scripts & Plugins)
- You have something like Noscript running and that has turned it
off for you, for this site.

Or the site tests for some JS primitive that SM doesn't implement.

Or the site doesn't recognise SM and proceeds on the assumption that
it doesn't implement the JS level that it thinks is needed.

G. Ross, what's the weather web site? Do you have its exact URL you saw
this issue?

https://www.13wmaz.com/radar

I get a "Your browser is not fully supported. For full feature support,
please upgrade to a modern browser such as Microsoft Edge."

Works in my Firefox though.

I had searched for "password" rather than "Using the Mail Account Setup

only my current password (my ISP is only a couple of miles away).

I would still like to know if the information is available on a web

Thanks.

Tested in my SM 2.53.4 with no extensions and didn't see any this & that

I do have all the user tracking settings enabled, prompt selected for

The Stop button would occasionally turn red, and I would see activity in

You mean Seamonkey 2.49.5?  It looks like you do.
If this is a Firefox problem, why are you mentioning your Seamonkey

Are you saying your normal default printer is not selectable from

My bad, it is SM 2.49.5 and I am using Seamonkey as my installed browser
