You might try MozBackup to extract and then compress your profile on
your flash drive. I don't know anyone who has successfully used
MozBackup to restore their profiles, but it sounds real good. I have it
installed and saved several profiles, but have not had the need to
restore my profiles.

I was going to recommend MozBack to do the backup to a flash drive the
backup will be in compressed form when it is done. As for a restore I
have done several restores, and also use it to move my complete account
to a new PC.

Thanks guys, this sounds encouraging, since Danny has used it to restore

I've found the SeaMonkey2 folder under Program Manager, but I can't
find the current files for the profile/mail/news, etc.. Under
Documents Settings, I have files that are dated 2009. That can't be
my current data, can it?

On my XP machine (IIRC, things are somewhat different on Windows 7, if
you're even using Windows...), the profile is at C:\Documents and
Settings\My Windows Name\Application
Data\Mozilla\SeaMonkey\Profiles\..., where My Windows Name is my user
name as far as Windows is concerned.

Sorry I forgot to say I'm using WinXP2, and that's where my files are.
I guess those old dates must relate to the dates the file folders were
set up, and not the last time it was used. It's been a long time, since
I've looked at these things, and I tend to forget a lot. ;)

Also I haven't used flash drives before, so is it harder than I might

Can't answer this in any detail, but if your flash drive is formatted
for FAT32, it will have a 4 GB file size limit, in case any of your SM
files are that fat. ;-)

There may be other considerations, keep reading for other responses.

I knew about the file size limitations, and that's another reason I
thought I must not be looking at my current files, because they don't
seem very big, for all the junk I have saved in SM. :)

Thanks for your help, Paul. Still hoping someone will jump in about the
USB flash drives being used for backup. Good idea or bad? :)

It can't. Microsoft closed down its news server last year. They
replaced it, and all their groups, with some silly web forums.

This the beginning of the end of live of usenet

Why do you say that? The groups (most of them) had propagated to most

You can't attach a folder because it is not a file. If you click on a

The only way I know to do this is to use, for mail, an IMAP server.
The mail stays on the server.

If you use the mail protocol POP, the mail is downloaded to the client
and then deleted from the server. There is an option with POP to leave
a copy of the mail on the server but I don't know of a way to get THAT
mail off of the server.

I have only one pc running seamonkey, using mail with pop3, and i leave

To delete the mails on the server i use PopTray

You still don't tell us whether these are POP or IMAP accounts. I
assume POP, since IMAP mail would almost certainly be left on the server.

Navigate to your profile folder on one of the computers, find the mail
subfolder then the subfolder for the account from which you wish to
transfer data.

Copy the files Inbox, Drafts, Sent, whatever, without extension. Copy
these files to your flash drive. Rename them to something like
Oldinbox, etc.

Paste these renamed files into the profile of your second computer,
alongside the existing Inbox, etc. Open SeaMonkey.

You will see new folders in your folderpane, called Oldinbox, etc. Drag
and drop messages to reorganize them as you wish. You then recopy the
combined files and transfer them to the original computer.

To simplify this in the future, set one of the machines to leave a copy
of messages on the server. Make sure that machine has received the
messages before downloading them on the other machine, which would
remove them from the server. There is no convenient way to do this for
Drafts and Sent folders etc. at least on a POP account.

If the two machine are on a local network, it is possible to have both
machines point to a common profile on a shared network drive. However,
this does cause a very noticeable performance slowdown.

The ultimate answer for this kind of synching is to switch to IMAP
accounts, where all these folders are stored on the server, and thus
available on any computer.

Lee

Looks like no easy way...
This is Seamonkey-Mail, @comcast.net..
Going to IMAP means changing many ID's addresses on many Web Pages...

I still can't find how to merge or sync the individual mail messages
from one mail folder to another..
Sync programs will merge complete mail files of messages but not the
individual mail messages from one mail file to another..
For example, PC1 has 5 mail messages dated 7/1 while PC2 has 5 mail
messages dated 7/2; how do I sync so both PCs have 10 mail messages
dated 7/1 7/2 ??

Uhoh, that will be more tricky.
The copying the profile-approach assumes that both machines are not
running at the same time. It assumes you copy your profile after
finishing you work on one PC to another one and vice versa.

Real synching is not possible that easy. I have to say usually IMAP or
at least POP3 with the option leave messages on the server until
deleted is being used (on at least one PC) and not all messages being
fetched and deleted from the server as this causes a lot more trouble.
You might consider changing that or switching to IMAP if possible.

If your problem is the getting all mails on one machine just once to get
started, it's probably the easiest way to send them to yourself and
filter them (if it's not many) or copy the mailbox-files (inbox etc.),
renaming them and throwing them into the profile folder of the other PC.
That should integrate the new folder. This will cause duplicates (if
existing) of course in different folders, but it's the fastest approach.
You can then leave them there or move them to another folder (e.g.
inbox, sent, etc.) from within Semonkey very easily.
After that, perform the steps to leave messages on the server on at
least one machine mentioned above or switch to IMAP...

regards

Martin

Thanks, Martin

I think that leaving messages on the server and auto download on both
computers will suffice..

that each will have all of the same early and late messages when they
are connected together occasionally??

One option is to use a dedicated sync program, such as Syncback, to sync
your mail to a removable drive of some sort. You can then connect the
removable drive to your second computer and sync it in the other direction -
from removable to the computer. There is a learning curve involved in
setting up and using the program (which would need to be installed on both
computers) but it's really not very difficult. I use Syncback - it's free,
and IMO works very well.

Thanks, I'll try it..

Can the same be done for Bookmarks??

are the two computers connect through a network? If so, then why don't
you have one inbox and sent for both? Same with bookmarks?

For bookmarks, on one of the computer, create a directory called
bookmarks. Then from the browser, click on Bookmarks, Manage Bookmarks,
Tools, Export. Now, Export your bookmarks to that directory you created.
Now, from the bookmark manager, click on File, Open, and locate that
bookmark file. Now from the other computer, open the bookmark manager,
and click on File, Open and locate that bookmark file. There, done. Both
computers sharing the same bookmark file.

For mail, on one computer, from the mail application, click on Edit,
Mail Newsgroups Account Settings, select the account, then under
Server Settings, on the bottom right you will see Local Directory. Note
the location of this directory. Now, go to the other computer, and do
the same thing, but this time click on the Browse button, and have it
point to the other location. Once you've done that, close and reopen SM.
Now, both SMs should be using the same accounts.

The problem with this system is that a laptop is intended to be
portable. As long as both machines are connected to the same network,
this is a fine idea, but when the laptop is used at a remote location,
this will no longer work.

What I do is to point both the laptop and the desktop to a third
location, a usb flash drive. All my mail folders are kept on this
drive. When I am at home, the drive is plugged into the desktop, and
available on the network for the laptop.

On the road, I take the usb drive with me, and plug it in to the
laptop. With Mac OSX Leopard, I can use one profile for both home and
remote uses. On Win XP, you will probably need home and away profiles
fro this to work.

Note, I am the only user accessing this data. If you have multiple
users who might be accessing the same data at the same time, this
would not be a very good idea.

Lee,
I am using XPproSP3
How do you point each PC to the flash drive (PC1 F:\ PC2 E:\) in my
case??
Willard

Well, there are a couple of options. You could simply set up a new
profile to be placed on the flash drive. My experience is that is a
little slow.

With an existing profile:

EditMail Newsgroup Account Settings(accountname)Server Settings.

In the local directory field, browse to the location on your flash
drive. Restart SeaMonkey, and it should be there.

This will do it; but it had to build a new Inbox??
