As a reply to EVERYONE who has "suggested" solutions comprised of BUYING a new
computer and employing Windows 10 - Most of you seem to think that money just
grows in my garden like weeds.

An older retired person on a fixed income cannot just go out and buy a compuker
that has Windows 10 on it !

Life is not always so simpleI figured this thing out myself, as per usual,
and just press Alt-F4 rapidly and often and THAT works to bug out of whatever
this problem is.

One of you gave me a link to a MalewareBytes that DOES work in Windows XP.
Thanks to that individual. It IS working now.

I have inquired about BUYING Windows 10 for my system which has a Celeron D 3.33
GHz CPU with 2 GB of Memory and 2 TB of HD. I am told - DON'T DO IT ! May run
but would have problems with 'Drivers'.
I don't know enough to spend $$ to try it and don't trust Salespeople to not
screw me into the ground.

Thanks to those who actually helped me.

I'm with you. Twenty years into fixed income retirement and well into 9th
decade. I have one XP SP3 and one Win 7 going strong. I note that you said you
were on XP SP2. Is there any reason you can apply the free upgrade to XP SP3?

I don't know where to get and/or apply SP3.

If I get it from Microsoft, won't they zap my XP
so I can't use it ? I trust Microsoft about as
far as I could throw Bill Gates.

Then - even if I could get SP3 - would it make my
XP unstable.

Consider that I have a stable system now and if it
goes TU, then I am screwed. I have the system
disks and would have to wipe my Hard Drive and
start COMPLETELY over !

Long story short - Is it safe to apply SP3 ?
From where ?

The decision is always for the person to make - I was merely offering
a suggestion/recommendation/advice.

Of course, it is a bit like riding a motorbike, naked, or, having
unprotected sex with a stranger - a person can do it, if the person so
wants, but, the person can expect extra harm, when things go wrong, if
the person does not use adequate protection.

That was my point.

AVG appears to be relatively good, as anti-malware protection, but, in
using MS Windows XP, the operating system is so out of date, now, that
no-one should be using it while connected to the Internet, or, while
using any access to external data sources such as USB drives or
optical (or, floppy) disks. That is a bit like sharing needles in
mainlining.

To be now using MS Windows XP, is not wise.

It is that simple.

Hmmm.

I have never heard of that one.

So, is the original poster's system, 32-bit?

In the lack of specifications provided by the original poster, that is
consequently one omission, so, that particular previously unknown (to
me) anti-malware software, may not be applicable to the original
poster's system, anyway.

However, that does not alter the fact that no-one should now be using
MS Windows XP - to so do, is like leaving all of the doors and windows
of a house, open and unlocked, when leaving the house (especially, if
the computer is connected to the Internet, or otherwise is accessible
to external data, such as optical disks or USB drives).

I reiterate, as has already been proposed, that the original poster
sgould be considering switching to something like UbuntuMATE Linux,
which is more stable, efficient, and, more supported, than MS Windows;
and, UbuntuMATE Linux is free.

There are a ton of free anti virus/malware/pupware
programs for XP3.
You may want to search for some.

I have up to SPS2.

Is there some reason you have not done the free upgrade to XP SP3?

I can think of one and only one valid reason off the top of my head.

Take one HP machine using an AMD 64-bit processor. HP had an image for
Intel processors and at one point they simply started using it for their
AMD offerings as well. Upgrading one of those to SP3 kills it.

It does sound as though Dr Bill's machine could already be compromised
though, a decent bootable virus scanner would say more.

See http://ubuntu-mate.org/

I use the "TraditionalOK" Appearance Theme, and it looks sufficiently
like Windows XP, and, is, to me, the best looking theme, anyway.

Linux is more secure, efficient, stable, and, supported, than MS
Windows, with the support including mailing lists, where help can be
available at any hour of the day or night, seven days of every week.

Whilst the original poster did not give the specifications of his
computer, if it is not adequate to run UbuntuMATE, a new computer that
is adequate to run UbuntuMATE, is relatively inexpensive, and, would
probably have been regarded as a supercomputer, when MS Windows XP
came out.

MS Windows XP has not been supported for quite a while, now, and, is
about as secure (in terms of malware), now, as using MS Windows 3, so
I would not expect to find any current anti-malware software,
available for MS Windows XP or any earlier versions of MS Windows.

I note also, that the original poster did not state which version of
SeaMonkey, was being used, and so I am wondering whether the original
poster is using a sufficiently recent version of SeaMonkey, and,
whether a sufficiently recent version of SeaMonkey, can run on MS
Windows XP.

Time to buy a newer one? Goodwill has used
computers at reasonable prices.

You could probably get one with Windows 7.

You could also (clears throat) switch to Linux.

If someone with a used car asks a mechanic to fix a problem, how many
tell the client to go buy a newer car ?! Big Help !

Probably the mechanic that can't fix the old car anymore, due to parts
unavailability or other reasons.

It stops everything on SM.
SM does not respond. Can't get out.

Says I have to call some 800 number to get my
computer back - big long worded thing that
repeats itself.

I have been able to get out only by repeated
ALT-F4 and restarting Windows (XP) and then
after a while of that, by clicking on the icon
below and clicking "Close". I can't
remember exactly what I do, but eventually it
goes away.

Is this the "Extortion Virus" thing out of
Russia I have heard about ?

Not exactly. It sounds like some kiddie thing.
The real ones would encrypt everything except the
contact info.

What is the best way to get out of it ?

Clean your machine or pay them money.

BTW - I can't find any FREE virus checkers that
work in XP. My computer is too old to run
the new Windows.

There are a ton of free anti virus/malware/pupware
programs for XP3.
You may want to search for some.

I have up to SPS2.

I would try the various virus scanners to see if they work.
I do not have any active virus shields. Not wanted & not needed.
BUT, I do scan every now and then if the machine acts up with:
Malwarebytes
Adwcleaner
Sophos Free
and if a machine really acts up, it gets scanned with Kaspersky 10 boot disk.
Nothing has ever gotten to my home machines except when my son
decided to play with viruses.
The work machines used to get viruses all the time from the main servers
but not since they went to Sophos paid version.
btw, I have never had a problem with SP3 on any of my machines.

Depending on the car, it could be the best option. When I've had older
cars, sometimes mechanics have told me it wasn't not worth the cost of
the repair and I should move on. I trust those mechanics more than the
ones who will happily waste thousands of dollars repairing a junker.

Correction: "wasn't worth..."
