I use gentoo, and as far as i can figure out everything is pretty up to date, including my seednode.ref when i first start the daemon, and i connect to the UI via my web browser everything seems fine. then i click on one of the gateways provided (ie The Freedom Engine) and I get an error tha

Yuh, some connections should be open. Although when you start it up, there won't be many connections for a bit unless you start requesting stuff. But as you say, you've tried that by trying to retrieve gpl.txt and other files. What does the logfile say? freenet.log - Original Message -

"Keys" in freenet are like "files" on the internet. So the "Data not found" message you're getting is similar to a "404: Page not found" page you might see from time to time on the internet. There's a bit more to it, but you can think of it like that. Is your freenet running well? Can you retrie

They can be installed anywhere. The file freenet needs is the executable file java which should have came with the java distribution. Install freenet into a directory in your home directory.
