commercial games have been re-released as shareware (most notably
through magazines that had optional disk subscriptions and certain

Same here. I have a few adventure shareware CD-ROMs that look commercial,
and some 3.5" floppy disks in paperboard pouches (Jungle of Doom, the Hugo
series, etc).

The only shareware I actually pick up are the "published" versions of
shareware games (you could get these in stores). Like all of the Apogee/id
stuff published by Wiz technology.
