The only problem with Disciples was that it never had a large fan base,

2001-11-02 Thread Hugh Falk

Ugh, it's been so long since I've played. However, I remember I liked
Undead a lot because of their ability to paralyze. That won a lot of
battles for me. One thing that impressed me though, was the balance of the
game. I had a lot of fun learning to play all the sides...and was
eventually equally successful with them all. However, I found Dwarves to be
the most difficult.

Yes, Disciples has an extremely small fan base. I tried to find any kind
of FAQ or similar on the net, to no avail.

It is indeded a very interesting game, with the exception of the Jagged
Alliance series, I've never seen any game blending the RPG and Strategy
types so well.

Oh, what a shame...

You see, recently I tried to come up with a good 1st person RPG that had
LAN (either by TCP/IP or IPX) support so I could play with my stepson over
our home network. There are _no_, I repeat, absolutely _no_ 1st person RPGs
with LAN support whatsoever, with the exception of Elder Scrolls:
Battlespire, and that one has a severe flaw: no chance of saving the game
before you finish one entire level (we took 2 hours to try to finish the
first level, and when we were about 80% there, the game crashed on the
computer that was playing the server).

So, many 1st person RPG either

b) had net support but no lan support (Yserbius)
c) have nice LAN support but the RPG elements were completely gone (Legends

that
at least chars run slower with plate mail than with leather armor, etc.

There are a few minor differences, but the first person perspective does
make targeting that much more of a factor that can't be regulated with

Trust me... it's really just another squad based FPS with midevil

Actually, this topic reminded me of a similar question, what games are you
all looking forward this season/next few months?

I've remembered about this because this weekend I've received a CD full of
demos of upcoming / already released games (Lightweight Ninja, Legends of
Might Magic, Gorasul (german version), Stronghold, Patrician 2, Magic
Mayhem art of Magic, Throne of Darkness, Kohan: Ahriman's Gift...)

I must admit I found the Lithtech 2.0 engine on Legends of MM very
impressive, and Throne of Darkness is a nice action-RPG that shows several
differences from Diablo, but the game that really impressed me was
Patrician 2. Hats off to Ascaron for such a detailed game with such a nice
interface and level of detail. It's been a *long* time since a strategy
game has made me forget all the RPGs I have at home calling my name! ;)

If you want to see an impressive use of Lithtech, check out No One Lives

Despite the game's hypothetical flaws Legends of Might Magic looked nice,
so I'm already imagining what 3do can do with the new version of Lithtech
(2.5) for Might Magic 9...

Since the demo is too limited, let me ask you: why didn't you like Legends?
Is it a simple shooter? Are there no RPG elements in the game?

I have seen NoLF, seemed like a regular 3d shooter, so I skipped it.

You should give it a try. I'm not normally a 3D shooter fan, they all seem
to be the same thing over and over again, but NOLF adds a bunch of nice
features, including levels were your objective is sneaking around
surveilance cameras without being caught, stealing items, etc. Tons of
scripted events and a very solid story. Definetly worth a look.

Since the demo is too limited, let me ask you: why didn't you like
Legends?
Is it a simple shooter? Are there no RPG elements in the game?

Legends is basically a low quality version of Counterstrike in a fantasy
setting. I bought it because of a preview that touted small story based
missions with lots of interaction and a huge overall epic that it all fed
into. Seems the developers noticed the success of Counterstrike and simply
dumped all other plans for the game. You have rescue the princess missions
and the like, but they are just like capturing the flag pretty much. In the
end the RPG elements are dressing at best. Very dissapointing.

Although any character class can use any weapon, they have advantages and

Have you tried the Windows remake (Wizardry Gold)?

No, but this is largely because I've heard umpteen reports of bugs and
whatnot. Most Wizardry veterans I've spoken to prefer the original, and
I don't really want to spend the time trying out the new version given
that reputation.

WizGold is a bit buggy. Worse still, you can't just breeze through the
combat system, like in Wiz6/7.

epsilon testing?) Next on my hit list are the two Fallouts (neither of
which I've played more than casually).

I finished Fallout and it bumped my #1 favorite game of all time down to
#2 (Wasteland). From what I hear about Fallout 2, it will bump Fallout
from that top tier when I get around to playing it.

Yeah, I just played through Wasteland twice recently (I'd never played it
more than casually before a few months ago, either). Word on Fallout 2
is that it isn't quite as good as the original (which I suppose is like
saying Beethoven's 7th isn't quite as good as the 9th, given the tone
these praisings-with-faint-damning usually take).

Fallout 2 isn't nearly as good as the original for at least a couple of
reasons. F2 is buggy, even with the latest patch (actually, there's a great
story behind these patches... involving an help request from Feargus
Urquhart himself to the hackers group that ripped and released the pirate
version...!), and the fact that Tim Cain co. weren't behind it, which
means the storyline is less insteresting.

Also, F1 had different ways to play it and to finish each quest. F2 seemed
a lot more straightforward. There's even one specific skill that makes the
game a whole lot easier if you choose it at the beginning.

The only advantage I can spot on F2 is the fact that it takes quite a lot
more to finish than F1, which you can finish in 10- straight hours.

ObSWCollect: I'm still trying to land an undamaged Wasteland hint book.
(It normally fetches like $100 on eBay if it's in good shape.) My copy
has an occasional pencil or pen mark (not too bad, but I'd prefer better).
Is it just me, or do the middle pages of this have a tendency to fall out?
(No pun intended.) Every copy I've ever seen either has the middle four
pages loose, or missing altogether.

I think mine's nearly perfect... $100 on eBay? Great! :)

Right now, I'm playing Civilization II and Heroes of Might and Magic III
(which are games I play on and off). I'm eagerly awaiting the impending
release of Civilization III. Naturally, I've pre-ordered the Limited
Edition thereof. ObSWCollect: I normally get these ASAP, because these
are usually the sorts of games I like to play a lot, and also because it
gets surprisingly hard to find a good LE if you wait even several months
-- I waited on the Platinum version of CC:TS for a while, and it took me
a long time scanning eBay to get a complete copy. (Well, it's better to
wait for two or three months, but I really want to play Civ III
immediately. Also, rumor has it that demand for the LE exceeds supply.)

I'll probably re-play Wizardry VII (for the 4th time) shortly. I probably

Hi everyone... I'm just getting out of a funk in which I didn't play any
games for about 6 months (with the exception of a few MAME titles), and now
that I'm back in I started wondering what the rest of you all are playing.
Trying to figure out if there is some sort of common denominator that us old
schoolers look for in modern games, and which old games still attract us to
the computer.

So if everyone could send out a list of the games they currently play (and I
mean really put hours in, or play more then once a week... not just boot up
once a year... like I do with Skate or Die)

Here I go:
Modern:
Max Payne (up until a few weeks ago when I beat it)
Crimson Skies
Monopoly Tycoon

Old:
North and South (Amiga - Emulated)
Nuclear War (Amiga -emulated)
GIJoe (MAME)
Super Pang (MAME)

Looking forward to seeing the taste variations here!

Have you tried the Windows remake (Wizardry Gold)?

which I've played more than casually).

I finished Fallout and it bumped my #1 favorite game of all time down to
#2 (Wasteland). From what I hear about Fallout 2, it will bump Fallout
from that top tier when I get around to playing it.

No, but this is largely because I've heard umpteen reports of bugs and
whatnot. Most Wizardry veterans I've spoken to prefer the original, and
I don't really want to spend the time trying out the new version given
that reputation.

You're kidding, $100 just for the clue book?!? Hafta see if I can find
mine. Personally, of the three or four I've had, I've never seen one with
loose pages.

Mine are fine, because they were barely used.
