if you used a keyboard you would press enter on the combo box to turn browse
mode off then use alt down arrow to go through the list then tab to get to the
next combo box and alt down arrow for this one too. both with browse mode off.

i don't know how you would do this with brail.

Hello Tom,

Oh well, I have a little egg on my face on this one I'm afraid. There is
one file that indeed must be a scanned image, as in Chairman Gowdy's
letter to Paul Ryan, because no matter how I tried to save or reproduce
it, it was reported to be an empty file, but the others appear to be
textual. Carol Smith was kind enough to convert the letter file for me.

I went to the trouble of converting them all to text files, but I think
I'm going to try to set up the reader so that I can explore the files
that way. I need to find the accessibility features and see if that wont
help a bit. I know they're there, I just have to locate them again.

As you can see, I don't find myself reading too many .pdf files.

At present, it seems that I am only set up to read one page at a time,
and although I should be able to use the right and left arrow keys to
move from page to page, it doesn't seem to be working that way for me.
Of course, I really don't think I want to use the reader in that way for
obvious reasons. I prefer to use arrows to move between characters and
words like with any other reader. Maybe I'll break down and just get
QRead and just avoid the whole mess.

Anyway, thanks for looking into this matter for me. I'll try to be a bit
more careful in my assessment of the situation next time.

Take care,

Larry

Re: sites not shown as links

2016-06-29 Thread Tom Kingston via Talk

Linette,

I think the problem here is that no one has clarified exactly what
you're experiencing.

When you open a message with a link you can't access do you hear the
word "link" before or after it? I forget which is the default. If you
can you should be able to tab or L/Shift-L to it and press enter because
you're in browse mode when viewing messages but not when replying or
writing. And turning on browse mode when replying or writing only causes
more problems.

So if you're in browse mode and "link" is not voiced then something is
up with the link and you have to copy it manually. Just arrow to the
beginning, press F8, move to the end and make sure you arrow to the last
character. Press F8 again and a dialog should pop up with a Copy text
button already focused. Just press space bar and the link will be in
your clipboard.

Linette,
HTML emails and web pages can contain hyperlinks to other web pages
or files. The author can assign descriptive text to the hyperlink so
that the recipient sees a meaningful link name in the message or Web
page.
This is a good thing to do as it helps the user understand the link's
purpose more clearly. For example, the link text could be "Click
here to learn more about product ABC".
The author could also use the web page address as the link's text.
For example, the link text might be "http://productABC.com. Not a
good practice but people still do it.
You can activate the currently focused link by pressing Enter on it.
If you want to copy the links address to your clipboard, you can do
so, but the process depends on your email client. In Outlook, after
focusing the link, you can open the context menu and select Copy Link
or something similar.

Hey Larry,

Yes. Acrobat isn't exactly a walk in the park. I haven't even installed

Martha,
This site might be more trouble than its worth. Aside from the 204
accessibility violations my automated checker found on the home page, you
have to go through a multi step process to print coupons. After adding one
or more coupons to the coupon cart, you then have to activate the print
button. From there, you have to provide your mobile phone number. Then, in
theory you will get a verification code to get to the next step. Who knows
what other hoops you will have to jump through after that. Good luck.

Once you have got to the address book, as Ted said, you just do alt+f for
the file menu and press enter on New Contact or just press the letter c. As
a shortcugt, you can just do ctrl+n.

RE: sites not shown as links

2016-06-29 Thread Marc Solomon via Talk
Paulette,
If the web page element is an actual HTML hyperlink (anchor element with a
valid href attribute), pressing Enter when focused on it will always activate
the link. What you are describing sounds like a custom HTML element that was
not designed to be keyboard accessible. What do you do when you find a web page
element that is not operable with the keyboard and inaccessible? I would
recommend you contact the web page author and tell them about the problem. More
times than not, they don't know about accessibility and the needs of people
using screen readers. So, you can help educate them. Tell them to unplug their
mouse and try to activate the element.
HTH,
Marc

Linette,
HTML emails and web pages can contain hyperlinks to other web pages or
files. The author can assign descriptive text to the hyperlink so that the
recipient sees a meaningful link name in the message or Web page.
This is a good thing to do as it helps the user understand the link's
purpose more clearly. For example, the link text could be "Click here to
learn more about product ABC".
The author could also use the web page address as the link's text. For
example, the link text might be "http://productABC.com. Not a good practice
but people still do it.
You can activate the currently focused link by pressing Enter on it. If you
want to copy the links address to your clipboard, you can do so, but the
process depends on your email client. In Outlook, after focusing the link,
you can open the context menu and select Copy Link or something similar.
HTH,
Marc

Re: Trouble with OCR on a .pdf file

2016-06-29 Thread Larry Higgins via Talk

Take care,

Larry

The report is broken up into several PDF files section by section.
I downloaded a couple of them, unblocked them, and they read fine in
QRead. So they're not scanned images.

for some reason some http links have to be pasted into the browser manually.
sometimes you can click on them if you turn browse mode off before you can

In some messages, sites are named, but they are not shown as links; that
is, the http and so on is there, but they be clicked on. This is
probably some simple thing that I just don't know how to do. How can
things like this be put into the browser?
I have the latest version of WE, the latest Firefox, and am running

Linette,
HTML emails and web pages can contain hyperlinks to other web pages or files.
The author can assign descriptive text to the hyperlink so that the recipient
sees a meaningful link name in the message or Web page.
This is a good thing to do as it helps the user understand the link's purpose more
clearly. For example, the link text could be "Click here to learn more about
product ABC".
The author could also use the web page address as the link's text. For example, the
link text might be "http://productABC.com. Not a good practice but people still
do it.
You can activate the currently focused link by pressing Enter on it. If you
want to copy the links address to your clipboard, you can do so, but the
process depends on your email client. In Outlook, after focusing the link, you
can open the context menu and select Copy Link or something similar.

2016-06-29 Thread Tom Kingston via Talk

I'm not sure what file Larry is talking about. But I found this page:
http://benghazi.house.gov/NewInfo
entitled "Select Committee on Benghazi Releases Proposed Report".
The report is broken up into several PDF files section by section.
I downloaded a couple of them, unblocked them, and they read fine in
QRead. So they're not scanned images.
