RE: Jaws discussion list?
I aim to learn at least one thing every week from Raul's tutorials. The first command I learnt was how to read without having to constantly arrow down and mostly hold down the insert key and tap the down arrow key or hold down the insert key and tap 2 on the numpad. But like Window-eyes you can read by letter, word, line, sentence, paragraph etc. etc and the tutorials will show you how this is done. I too moved across from Window-eyes to Jaws this year and am a reluctant convert! Firstly, when you are told the screen has lost focus, just hold down the alt key and tap the tab key which will move you back to the screen. I am still working my way through tutorials but have found the following website with its podcasts very helpful. RE: Considering VoiceOver
This is true enough. Although I'd been a Window-eyes user ever since MS Windows was introduced, even a few months before migrating to Jaws last year, I was still learning new features in Window-eyes. In Office 365, which is Word 2016, just activate the Paragraph option in the context menu. It's the same as pressing Alt-Q for the search box in the ribbon and entering paragraph. This will give you paragraph settings. Pressing enter will open that dialog. Otherwise it's a button under the layout tab. Tab down through and set the first line indent to whatever you want. Ignore the left and right fields as these are for indenting entire paragraphs, which is something you might use to visually offset a paragraph length quotation of someone else's work by making both margins larger. The first line selection is in a combo-box. Tab down to the Set as default button and press it. Now, every time you hit enter you'll have a new paragraph that's automatically indented. To remove the indent from the first paragraph of each scene or section just go to the first line, press Home to be sure you're on the first character, and press backspace. If you want confirmation, press Control+Numpad plus before backspace. You should hear for example, 1.5 inches from left, 1.0 inches from top. backspace and press Control+numpad plus again and you should hear 1.0 inches from left, 1.0 inches from top. the thing you have to remember though is not to remove the indent until after you've started the second paragraph. Doing so turns off the automatic indentation for the document. But this is useful when you want to do just that for a document. Pressing the tab key once will also indent. But you have to remember to do it on every new paragraph. And most editors don't want tabbed indentations. And finally, Control+M indents the entire paragraph. For example, let's say you have no automatic indentation of the first line going on. So every line will begin at 1.5 inches from the left. Pressing Control+M will shift the entire paragraph to the indentation level. So every line will begin at 2 inches from the left. RE: auto-paragraphs
What my tutor wants is for me to submit my material in double line spacing with the first paragraph left-aligned and all subsequent paragraphs indented. So, what I would do is write the first paragraph without indenting. Then, because the text is double-line spaced, pressing the enter key once (to create a new line) acts as a new paragraph. Until now, I have been pressing the space bar five times on these new lines to indent the paragraph but my tutor would prefer me to use Microsoft's auto-paragraph function. Microsoft has an auto-paragraphing command, which I've found in the context menu but I'm unsure how to use it. Also, Microsoft also offer control m as a way of indenting a paragraph. What I'm asking is how do I use the auto-paragraph function in the context menu or, whether by pressing control m on the second paragraph would then mean that all subsequent paragraphs would be indented, as with bullets and auto-numbering? RE: Help with Jaws, please!
Paulette, as a new Jaws user, I'm not to best to help you but a tip I can pass on in respect of searching within word is that it is simpler to use the search and replace command rather than the "find" command. So, instead of using control for "find", use control H, which is the shortcut for "search and replace". This means that if you want to repeat the search, you just shift tab twice, or maybe three times, and press enter and it rtepeats the "find". I don't recognise many of the problems you are experiencing, which is why I have not responded and, as a new Windows 10, Office 365 and Jaws user, I'm still on a stepp learning curve myself. All I can say is that all your Microsoft commands should operate as they used to Window-eyes. So, when you want to open a document you have created, you should be able to open Word, press control o for open and then tab twice to see all your recently opened documents. I am wondering if you too have recently updated to Windows 10? Example, Ctrl-O brings up the Open dialogue and you can type in the name of whichever file you wish to open. First letter navigation should also be possible once the Open dialogue is invoked. In essence, you do not need a specialised Jaws keystroke to find stuff in Word. Oh well, I don't use whatever keystrokes Window-Eyes scripted for Word; I just use what Windows has to offer me and it works like a charm. Also, you can press the Windows key to launch the Search Edit Box. Here, type "documents" without the quotes of course. Once Documents has focus, press and you can use FIRST LETTER navigation to find your file. once you find the file you wish to open, press and, if it's a Word file, the file will open in Word. Remember to save your settings when done! When you talk about control panel analogous to that of Window-Eyes, what exactly are you trying to accomplish in Jaws? Jaws's approach is quite different from that of GW Micro's Window-Eyes! RE: Attachment Question
When I was using Window-eyes, I used to open attachments by shift tabbing back to the subject line and then right-arrowing to the attachment. Sometimes pressing enter would bring up options but more often I had to double click the left mouse button. RE: jaws for beginners
On my Milestone's SD Card I have created folders entitled Book1, book2 etc. and copy my talking nbooks into these folders - it saves always having to change the name of the folder to that of the book. In Window-eyes, as I arrowed down the folders, it would report if the folder was empty or, if it was an Audible, even the name of the book but also the size of the files therein. Jaws just tells me Book1, Book2 but no other information. Can I alter this? Yes, f12 brings up the save as dialog box where I can type the file name but shift tabbing doesn't bring up what I need. The programme seems determined that I should save my document in One Drive. In Windows 10 there was a browse button which I could use to escape from One Drive - I'm still playing but it is a mystery at the moment how to access my PC rather than One Drive. RE: Does Jaws have . . . .
Some of Window-eyes' features I've found really useful have been Read page elements: insert e; Speak summary: control shift s; Display page navigation dialog: insert tab reads comments, huyperlinks spelling errors and more). I wondered if Jaws had the equivalent? As Jaws calls things by different names I'm having difficulty searching to look this up myself. And lastly, do we treat notifications the same with alt n to access the open/save options etc. Hope someone can help. My aim is to learn half a dozen Jaws keystrokes a day but it is a relief to be typing this back in good old Window-eyes! RE: Two Jaws Questions
At last I have migrated to Jaws. I have to confess I'm not enjoying the experience so far but realise I need to learn how to tweak some settings. My first problem is that I don't like the speech! I strongly disliked the default Eloquence and am using Peter at the moment but wondered which voices people are using and feel are clearest. I think it is going to be a long time before I will be able to say I prefer Jaws to Windoweyes. I hadn't realised that insert c to reach the Outlook Calendar was a Window-eyes key. RE: Announcement: Brian Hartgen Training Course, Over Easy:The Switch from window-Eyes to JAWS! Being Held Online 6/1/17 at 2pm Eastern, 7pm UK Time
I really don't understand people's annoyance at having to purchase a tutorial. There is free material already available, which they can use, but why shouldn't someone be recompensed for their time and effort in creating a tutorial. When I purchased my Iphone, I didn't think twice about purchasing Anna Dresner's tutorial and it was money really worth spending. In the past I have used some of Brian Hartgen's tutorials and they were always of a high standard. There is free learning materials available for those who don't want to splash out extra money but they really can't expect people to undertake such a big piece of work and receive no reward. Mostly I don't have this problems with Favourites but now get a security problem everytime I try to download items via Sentspace. Is there a way round this? RE: The future of Window-eyes
I agree. If you look at the time and expertise which has gone into developing the product, then you can't expect to get that for nothing. Throughout my working life Vocal-eyes and then Window-eyes has been there to support me. IN my naivety I have always believe that there was little to choose between Jaws and Window-eyes but it has always seemed to me that the support given to Window-eyes users has been far superior to that provided to Jaws users. I'll be as sorry as anyone to see the demise of Window-eyes but am trying to be positive. Perhaps what this merger will mean is that the technical knowledge for both products will be brought together to create a new and even better beast, combining the best of both systems. reading e-mails in Outlook which appear in table format
I think I may have accidentally change some sort of setting as several e-mails in Outlook are now arriving in table format and are virtually impossible to read, unless I use the mouse. I don't know what I've done but is there a work-around for such e-mails? RE: Buying Music
I am old-fashioned enough that if I like several tracks on an album, I still prefer to buy a hard copy of the CD. However, if I only want a single track then I use iTunes because it is so simple. It downloads the track to iTunes but if I then decide that I'd like to create my own playlist and copy it to a CD to play on other devices, it is really simple to do so as the songs are saved in mP3 format. I have tried downloading music via Amazon but didn't find it easy at all. RE: Who's going to take over the tutorials now that Mark is gone?
I've been a Window-eyes user ever since I converted from DOS but have never read the manual! I think that if I was going to recommend anything, then it would be more tutorials on various topics but much shorter. So, for example, rather than having one tutorial on using Window-eyes with Windows 10, I'd have a series of short tutorials on various aspects. RE: Who's going to take over the tutorials now that Mark is gone?
I too am sorry to see Mark go. In truth we would really benefit from some of the tutorials being updated, i.e. I would very much like a tutorial on using Windows 10 with Window-eyes and an update on using Window-eyes with iTunes. RE: Ranking Screen Readers In Windows10 Anniversary Update: The Results Will Surprise You!
When I got a job as a Rehab. Worker in 1986 I think it was, I started with a Versabraille. It was supposed to be portable but in truth was too bulky and heavy to lug around. I stuck with that for about three years, so it was probably about 1990 when I got my first computer which was DOS-based and loaded with Word Perfect and Vocal-eyes. When DOS was discontinued there were forecasts of doom and gloom for sight impaired people as they said there would be no way that a blind person would ever be able to use a Window-based computer with all its graphics etc. And yet here we are, and although technology advances at an ever-alarming pace, thanks to companies like G w Micro (or should I now say AI Squared?) and Freedom Scientific, we have good access to the internet and most of the commonly used programmes. Personally I don't mourne the death of DOS but I can appreciate why some might. RE: chiming
Since installing the latest version of Window-eyes and the Anniversary version of Windows 10, Anything and almost everything chimes! For example, many e-mails chime when I open them, especially if a message comes up that lines have been stripped, and again it will chime to tell me when I had previously replied to a message. If it was a gentle little ping, it would be more tolerable than a chime loud enough to hear two rooms away - smile! The chimes are often useful alerts so I am wondering if there are ways of modifying when you get alert chimes?
