I got the demo of it to work just fine. Was considering getting a code. Re: WE suddenly notifying me I have an evaluation copy
Well Darrell, If you take a listen to any text of your choosing with JAWS, and compare the same reading with Window-Eyes, you can definitely hear the difference. JAWS Eloquence barely completes the last word of any sentence, then rapidly moves right to the first word in the next with virtually no pause or letup. And no, all of the applied settings at JAW's command will not help with this apparently programmed defect. If I wish to speed up my reading on my own, I can certainly do so, but I simply don't need to have my reading done at a pace that would drive me nuts if a human reader did the same. As many varieties of readers commercial or staff that the Talking Book program uses, I have encountered none that would read in that manner. This is something I simply cannot put up with, or abide. Re: WE suddenly notifying me I have an evaluation copy
Amanda, Please!, Please!, say it isn't so! Has Code Factory shut down their server permanently, or is this a temporary problem. I must say that I really like Eloquence, but haven't been totally satisfied with either Code Factory's version, nor that which comes with JAWS. The one problem I find with the factory's version is that it goes past my most comfortable WE reading speed of 41 to either a step or so below or above. And JAWS Eloquence doesn't pause appropriately between sentences, which doesn't seem to bother enough users for Vispairo (spelling) to do anything about it. Sure wish I hadn't gotten rid of, or maybe lost would be more like it, my version of Window-Eyes with an independent version of Eloquence, so that I might be able to use it with any screen reader, at least theoretically anyway. I really might be much more willing to completely switch over to either JAWS or NVDA if I could only hear Eloquence the way I wish to hear it. RE: WE suddenly notifying me I have an evaluation copy
Unfortunately, although I agree with the sentiments, there are flaws in this petition. It is not going to occur, that if a company purchased other competing businesses to promote their own, that they will regard this as anything but a hostile demand. What I would like to see however, is that at least the fully developed version of Window-Eyes was still available to purchase or upgrade as well as that itps related apps and software is made available for access to licensed owners of the software. I wish you luck and hope that I am incorrect that Vispero will allow another Screen Reader to compete with JAWS or Fusion. Re: Possible fix, was Re: WE suddenly notifying me I have an evaluation copy
By earlier experience: When this kind of behavior has shown up in the past - this it seems to do every now and then - all I have had to do is to hard-boot my computer. That is shut it all down, and start it up again. Seems waking it up from sleep mode does not work, as it will only reload memory. Even restarting it, warm-booting, seems not to do the trick. Have no clue why it pops up once in a while. Get a feeling it happens upon some update installations of Windows itself. Mr. Clower, wow, so good to read from you in this space! Reading your thoughts in this space brings back yesterday's memories when you and Gerry and Mike amongst others were helping me and my company with making the Moneygram app more accessible using Window-Eyes! Thank you for the great work you all did. I plan to LEAVE THIS LIST soon, but I wanted to be able to say THANK YOU to as many GW Micro employees in this space as possible that made sure I stayed SUBSTANTIALLY GAINFULLY EMPLOYED. I am internally and externally grateful to you all; no other screen reader has helped me TO BEAT THE ODDS, only Window-Eyes! I sure hope that some sweet day, it can still be resuscitated in my life time. Take care sire, God richly bless and keep you all!! Possible fix, was Re: WE suddenly notifying me I have an evaluation copy
Greetings, To work around the evaluation copy error message when WE starts up, do the following: 1. From the Window-Eyes control panel, go to File -> Explore Profile Folder. 2. Open the wineyes.ini file. 3. Add the following line to the [misc] section: AllowUpgradeCheckOnStartup=0 4. Save the file. 5. Back in Window-Eyes, go through each running app under the Apps menu, and set them all to no longer check for updates at startup. 6. Restart the program. Once done, you should, in theory, be all set. This tip was passed along to me from a reliable source who would prefer to remain anonymous. I hope it helps someone. If you have Office installed, WE for Office may still work. So ... ironically! It might work albeit it is older than the last release of Window-Eyes. Hello David I'm not sure there is a solution. I am using windows 10 and 11. I am getting exactly the same issue on both machines. I am very sorry to say that I have come to the conclsion that Window-eyes is almost at the end of it's life. I hope I am wrong but I don't think so. Re: Prompt
Hi Mike, I am inclined to suggest that you somehow reset the form. The easiest method may be to run down to the bottom of the page and see if you can find a reset form button. Alternatively, try to return to the page From a clean link, that is, not from a bookmark that you may have saved. This latter suggestion might be a bit more complicated, but the idea is to get the website to serve you up a brand spanking new copy of the form. Hi Curtis, Actually, this is quite a difficult problem to solve, but, if you have a significant amount of courage and patience, you can certainly do it. Re: Thunderbird problem
Hello Larry Thank you for your reply. I found Thunderbird became more and more difficult to use after version 60.4.0 and so, I eventually went back to that version. It works well with my 64 bit laptop apart from the editing problems I mentioned previously. I agree WE is becoming less and less useful but I often find We works with somethings that other screen readers cannot cope with. I am intending to keep it on my machines so long as it is useful. Chances are that if I had not chosen to upgrade in this way, Thunderbird would be more manageable. As it is, I have to move to either The Fish, or NVDA to make any significant use of Thunderbird. Another way to read text in a message is to save to either a text or html file, but what a PITA. Frankly, the thing tha t keeps me attached to WE is the Winamp scripts, and not least, WE's version of Eloquence. I really do not like the reading pace of Eloquence with JAWS, and increasingly NVDA. Mike, Although I sure hope that someone has a satisfactory solution to your issue, I'm afraid that WE is simply becoming less and less usable as time goes on. As for me and Thunderbird, If I wish to simply read a message, I have to select the entire message with ctrl+a, and use the read to end combo ctrl+shift+r, but there is really no way to use the editor, all of this at least with the 64bit version. I will have to admit though, to using an illegal version of IBM Eloquence with NVDA, and can't make use of my Code Factory edition of same with either screen reader for some reason. Anyway, that is only my two cents worth on the matter, and I'm quite sure that is just about all it is worth . Hi Butch, Indeed, referring to the post by Steve Jacobson, it occurs that were you to forward your email to Gmail, you could still use Becky. Also, Windows mail comes with windows 10. Although the last time I tried it, it was a bit of a hassle, it is free and all you have to do is configure it. Butch, You may have to switch, but please know that Becky does support the relatively new OAUTH2 or whatever it is that Gmail requires. Re: Set Files
Hi bob, Actually, there is no easy or one step method of updating set files; Specifically, this in vaults updating apps for specific programs. Therefore, the preinstalled Apps must be updated individually. As for configuring a set file, or indeed writing an app to improve a programs accessibility, this can be a complex process. I am certainly familiar with window Eyes, having written a number of apps myself. If you wish, we could discuss all of this on the phone. Re: timer script you wrote for me
Hi Butch, Well, I didn’t bother trying the NVDA Add on because I am now running Windows 11 and you are running Windows 7 and who knows whether they would behave the same way anyway. Anyway, I decided to create a stand alone script for you which can be used regardless which screen reader you are using, or, indeed, whether you are using a screen reader at all. Here is the link to the zip archive in my dropbox: https://www.dropbox.com/s/xdahfiylgj4ef3w/ButchTimer.zip?dl=<https://www.dropbox.com/s/xdahfiylgj4ef3w/ButchTimer.zip?dl=0>1 just run the file with the dot VBS file extension and you’re off to the races. Ah yes Rick, what you say is so true. I wish everyone whose found comfort and satisfaction with a particular voice to be able to keep and maintain it. I just wish the people at FS would take seriously this pacing issue. I really can't believe that so many people can be satisfied with such unnatural verbal delivery. I really don't wish to argue about this, because I, at least on this issue, know that my mind can never be changed, not out of stubbornness, but on the knowledge that most people do not speak like JAWS speaks or reads in natural conversation. Re: Window-eyes 9.5.4 and Thunderbird 91.2
I remember back over 30 years ago, when I was trying to put my first PC together, I thought I just had to have Dectalk, because that is what I heard when getting introduced to OCR stand alone products, such as Kurzweil and Arkenstone. When listening to the Kurzweil stand alone, the synth was Dectalk, while the Arkenstone was being demonstrated to me using Artic BusinessVision. I really hated that Artic speech, but due to financial constraints ended up with Artic anyway, and I actually learned to like it. Now, I don't know if I could ever return to Artic After all of these years (even if it were at all possible), but one thing for certain, I cannot stand Dectalk. Re: Window-eyes 9.5.4 and Thunderbird 91.2
Pam, if you are reading email with Thunderbird, you are definitely using browse mode. As a matter of fact, when I go to reply to a message, I must turn off browse mode before I can begin composing the message. Ah, Ive just gotta mention this little funny. When writing the word "composing," I mistakenly wrote the word "composting." Now what I'm telling you about browse mode isn't compost. Try turning on Browse mode and see if that works. Some times the answers and solutions aren't that simple, but who knows, maybe it will work for you. Now as for Eloquence, I'll have to agree with you about the descending pitch in those circumstances, but that isn't quite the deal breaker that the reading delivery is proving to be. And BTW, this issue is not only evident with Eloquence with JFW, but all other synths included with the program as well. I also don't hear the speech as in any way slurred, but if I did, I would also have a problem with it as well. Of course, most of this that we think we hear is indeed quite subjective, with the possible exception of my particular complaint . Long live Eloquence, with all its faults, Larry On 1/8/2022 10:57 AM, Pamela Dominguez via Talk wrote: Browse mode to read emails? I'm not doing it on the web. I also use IE for DAISY text books, but for little else. WE is just a combination good/bad habit that I know I am ultimately going to have to break, and I'm sure most of you all have come to the same conclusion. There are things that WE will not read that both JAWS and Narrator will, but on rare occasion, WE will still come through, but these are becoming les and less frequent as time goes on. Too bad. Oh well, I've rambled on far longer than I planned too. Don't wish to get into any arguments about all of this. But just suffice it to say, that we sure lost a hell of a great product with a fine company behind it. Thunderbird
Hi, Not sure whether there are many WE users still on this list but just in case, I have a question. I am running WE 9.5.4. on Windows 10. I use Thunderbird as my email client. All was going well until around the 27th of Nov. then, It appears as though there was an update.. After that, I was no longer receiving email messages on both my gmail and outlook acounts. I have become a bit rusty on win 10 and as I looked around to try and figure what was going on, I couldn't get the messages. So, since I had a pretty good idea of when trouble began, I decided to roll back my system. I discovered a checkpoint on Nov. 26 and after the roll back, all was well and messages poured in. Does anyone have an idea about what might be causing the issue and maybe how to fix it? thanks for any help. Thanks for pointing me to the cursor dialog box and the key label dictionary they solve several of the problems . once I figured out which bits needed to be altered. However when I go word by word through a document in MS Word while using window Eyes 7.2 I still get where it’s doing see spot run run rather than see spot run period. At the end of the line the word next to a punctuation mark Or any of the other punctuation marks is still replying as if it is the word it’s right next to it’s like the program is taking the word next to a quotation punctuation mark and a punctuation mark as one item and then when it gets to the punctuation mark it reads the other one again I can’t figure out where to adjust it ? and this is in the word by word feature not in the reader or any of the other modes any ideas . Thanks for your time . Thanks for your time. Oh now Richard ___ Any views or opinions presented in this email are solely those of the author and do not necessarily represent those of Ai Squared. Hi, I have Windows 10 and WE 9.54. I have had no real issues until suddenly I am unable to send out a new message in Outlook. Previously, I would back tab until I found the Send button; however, I can not back tab and have found no other way to send the message. If I try to back tab, the message closes and goes away. Have others had this problem? Thanks for any help as I am needing to send reports to others. Be blessed! Re: After crash
as far as i understand some of your questions, all of them can be change in the cursoring rea. to change ctrl - left and right arrow is to change from word to word enhance for what you want to do. As for the second question, you should change your keylabel dictionary to read what you want to do The third question, I think, is something to do with the cursoring i think. i am not sure as well as i don't know what you want to do or i don't know of that function. but, it should be in the cursoring area. As for the word question, I am not certain I understand, so I might not be able to answer that as for the help, i just did at my end on my 9.54, it works fine. something might be missing for the manual for your case. Before the crash i was able to hit a preset command which would jump me up or down. However I don’t mean read previous because that will just keep reading the same one up or down paragraph. Where the command I’m looking for would slowly step me through the document. This brings me to the question I know the command to stair step me through a ms word document but it won’t auto speak at the moment. I know all of these are possible because i was doing them before the crash. One last problem, even though i told my installation disk to install all help files , every time i try to use the help section of window eyes it goes to loading and does nothing else. Any ideas ? Re: Window-eyes 9.5.4 and Thunderbird 91.2
Hi Don, Nice to hear from you again. Smile. As far as the list of Window-Eyes apps to disable, it is interesting to note that, actually, on one of my computers, I did not need to disable any apps, whereas, on another, I did. Also, I don’t think the fact that certain apps are running is the cause of your Thunderbird issue. The simple fact is that I was not even able to get Window-Eyes to launch without throwing multiple errors unless the apps I mentioned were disabled. The process of disabling apps couldn’t even be done at all unless I launched Window-Eyes without any apps starting up, and this is done by holding down the Shift key while launching it. I tend to think that the problem you are having is that which Bernie on the list mentioned when responding to Carol‘s post, namely, the Thunderbird set file is not loading and therefore the screen information presented by Thunderbird is not accessible. Bernie’s suggestion of the steps to get the Thunderbird set file to load should work, but, if it doesn’t, then the set file which you would need to load manually is TBEnhanced, as memory serves. Once you load that set file, you would need to press Control-S in order to save the association of this set file with the application window in question; this association would be to the main Thunderbird application window. At any rate, here is the list I had mentioned some time ago: Window eyes apps to disable Eloquence Fix Hotspot JAWS quick key WEDiag Windows Enhanced Good luck, and I hope this helps, Rod Sent from Outlook<https://aka.ms/sdimjr> for iPad OS From: Talk on behalf of Donald Roberts via Talk Sent: Friday, October 22, 2021 3:08 PM To: talk@lists.window-eyes.com Cc: Donald Roberts Subject: Window-eyes 9.5.4 and Thunderbird 91.2 I am running a recent version of Windows 10 on my Dell desktop. Although I currently use Thunderbird 91.2, this problem began several months ago. Whenever possible, I prefer to use Window-eyes 9.5.4 as my screen reader of choice. When something doesn't work, I switch to Jaws 2021 to see whether things work better. When it comes to email, I can no longer use Window-eyes and must use Jaws. If I try to use W E with Thunderbird, I can no longer read the body of any message. I can read the to, from, and subject fields but not the message body. Although I don't recall the specifics, several months ago, Rud Hutton indicated that there were some Window-eyes apps which nowneeded to be disabled in recent versions of Windows 10. I wonder whether this could be the problem when attempting to read email using Thunderbird. If anyone remembers what I am talking about, I would appreciate knowing which W E apps need to be disabled. I realize this is a long shot, but I would certainly prefer to read email using W E. Thanks in advance for feedback. tThank you
I would like to say thank you to all that gave me ideas for my email problem. I got up this morning and so far, WE seems to be working properly. I didn't do anything at all, just left the pc on for a day and today, it is working. I will keep the messages in the event I need to work through the problem again. Re: email not reading
Hi Carol, I am not sure what to say about your comment regarding a possible problem with your video. However, realizing that WE is no longer a viable product,I'll offer a possible suggestion. I am currently running WE 95.4 on a win 10 system and use TB all the time. Not sure what version of TB I have. On occasions, I had something similar to what you are describing. What I found was that when TB started, WE failed to load the TB setfile. So, if your system is still running and you can get into TB, press control backslash to get to the we control panel and if WE doesn't announce the setfile, press shift-T and it should say which setfile is loaded. At that point if it is not the TB setfile, simply press escape to go back to TB and then the TB sefile will become active. Hope this helps. I have a feeling that the problem has something to do with the video output as I heard the pc say something about making changes to the video and it shut down. I have not been prompted with any other otice. Carol On 10/22/2021 7:14 PM, Thomas Chan via Talk wrote: Was it an email client or a web browser? Regards, Thomas N. Re: email not reading
Well, it's all about the browse mode not kicking in or something broken for it to run properly. to be honest, i have this similar issue with my thunderbird on my old laptop running windows 7, it just freezes my computer when browse mode tries to load in thunderbird. I can't ask GW Micro to fix it when they are no longer around. What I do nowadays on my old laptop is to read email online when it's working fine in brave or chrome. I wish I can provide you a solutions for your problem. The only thing i can suggest is to turn off all the apps in window-eyes and see if that works or not. Regards, Thomas N.
