Hi, if using the laptop layout, you can activate the Jaws window by pressing Control Shift Caps lock J. So, basically, it's the 3 keys along the left side of the keyboard with the letter J. Hey, everybody. I have never used JFW before and I'm waiting for a reply to a query Beth from VFO sent me regarding how I plan to use the screen reader--home, professionally, other. I've followed all the threads of WE users switching to JFW and this one has me confused, and, a bit worried. Doesn't JFW have the ability to stack modifier keys? For example, can't you set a find feature to Control-Shift-F like the Window-eyes keystroke? Re: Alternative for Insert as Awkward Jaws Modifier Key?
Hi Pam, Generally speaking, the braille cell type of keyboard would use the dot 2 as the insert key. That is what I have and that key does work with programs that require the insert key, Window-Eyes and Jaws included. Of course, it is about as difficult for right-hand key commands as the numpad insert. I might try the sticky keys mode and see what happens. I did not like the caps lock key at all. Not all sixpacks are the same. Mine stands up, the way a braille cell does, and the top left is home, in other words, dot one is home, and dot four is end. Another keyboard I have only has a five pack. Re: Alternative for Insert as Awkward Jaws Modifier Key?
I would like to suggest, based on my own experience, if switching a desktop keyboard setting to laptop setting, it might be worthhwhile to make sure Jaws is in the alt-tab setting. Trying to use the capslock key to get into the Jaws setting was very tempramental for me. It only worked on a very few occasions and I did try many times to use it. I am certain there was some operator error, but even I can't have messed up that badly, LOL! Carol, happily using my insert key! RE: Alternative for Insert as Awkward Jaws Modifier Key?
Hi, Olusegun - I have 2 insert keys on my standard keyboard. I most often use the key above the delete key, the one in the "6-pack" of keys. The numpad insert key is proving to be more convenient for navigational controls and invoking "Say All" reading. My next investigation will be use of the capslock key as a general left-hand modifier key. I have read the list of Jaws keystrokes and noted that capslock is cited as the modifier for a number of functions. Thanks for the helpful response. Much learning and orientation left to become comfortable with Jaws... but it is coming. Ed Culpepper P.S. I note your location in Denver. I was out there in February to ski 3 days in Vail. Thanks for your testimonial. I am finding use of the numpad insert key to be handy with navigational controls and reading with "Say All." I have read through the table of Jaws keystroke controls. I haven't tried them all, but I anticipate difficulty with the combinations requiring the insert key and letters typically typed with the right hand. I have not yet experimented with using the Caps-lock key as a left-hand alternative to the right-hand 2 insert keys (6-pack and numpad). I'll try that next! Thanks for your help. RE: Alternative for Insert as Awkward Jaws Modifier Key?
Hi everyone, The way I have chosen to deal with the awkwardness of having to use the Insert key on the Numpad is to enable the setting for the Insert key to behave as a sticky key. This way, when you want to invoke key combinations which require a key on the right side of the keyboard, say Insert-F12, you can simply press either one of the Insert keys, release the Insert key, and then press the key you need. I believe this is preferable to using the Capslock key. This is found in the Settings Center (Insert-6). First, after arriving in the Setting Center, press Control-Shift-D to load the global settings. Then, expand the User node, and arrow to Insert key mode. By default, it is unchecked, and so you would check it by pressing spacebar on it. Incidentally, you can tab once after focusing any option to jump into the description pane and read the details for any setting, and you can use up and down arrows to read all the information available. Finally, tab to Ok to apply and save your settings and close the dialog. This Jaws is quite a program, isn't it? RE: Alternative for Insert as Awkward Jaws Modifier Key?
Hi: Have you tried the laptop layout? Here is a link to a set of mp3 files describing it. This is also available in a DAISY book through FS Reader. Here is the link; ftp://ftp.freedomscientific.com/users/hj/private/WebFiles/JAWS/LaptopKeysWithJAWS.zip Hope this helps. Sent from Mail for Windows 10 From: Ed Culpepper via Talk Sent: Monday, May 22, 2017 5:28 PM To: 'Window-Eyes Discussion List' Subject: Alternative for Insert as Awkward Jaws Modifier Key? Greeting WE Migrants - I am learning Jaws navigational keystrokes as I migrate from beloved WE to Jaws. Using the insert key as a primary Jaws modifier key is very awkward for me. On my keyboard the insert key is the top left key on the so-called "6-pack" of keys located just above the arrow keys. The Jaws command to begin "Say All" (like WE "Read to End") is Insert-down arrow. That requires an awkward contortion of my right hand or an inconvenient reach with my left hand for the insert key as I press the down arrow with my right hand. Other navigational commands use the insert key as the modifier with keys that are usually typed with fingers on the right hand. I am finding these keystroke combinations to be frustrating. Obviously Jaws users have been using this illogical keystroke combination for years. I must be missing something about how to do so efficiently. I have read about altering navigational keystrokes in Jaws, but I don't want to have to redesign the whole set of them. Bottom line is that I have a couple of questions: 1. Is there some alternative to the insert key as a primary modifier key for navigational keystrokes in Jaws? The WE Control-Alt combination with a single letter key was much more ergonomically efficient. To longtime Jaws users: I am looking to you for help or encouragement for the insert key awkwardness - any help? 2. Can I reprogram my computer or Windows 10 to recognize some key of my choosing to function as an additional insert key? For example, could I sacrifice the Control key on the left side of my keyboard to become an insert key to use as a modifier with keys typically typed with my right hand? I hope that I am not obsessing over what turns out with experience manipulating Jaws to be simply a curious quirk for a new user. Any help will be appreciated. Re: Alternative for Insert as Awkward Jaws Modifier Key?
I have a similar issue, using a one-handed keyboard, along with a Windows feature that automatically holds down the alt, windows, control and shift key. The traditional insert key logistically doesn't really work for me. On the other hand, I've never really gotten the hang of the caps lock key acting as the insert key. RE: Alternative for Insert as Awkward Jaws Modifier Key?
You have to go to basics and switch JAWS to laptop layout for the caps lock to work as the insert. However, you can use all of the desktop keys, you just have the caps lock key now. If you want, you can learn the laptop key commands right at your finger tips, but you do not have to. You can leave the desktop commands like you are used to, but if you switch to laptop lay out, you can use the caps lock key which makes a lot of the commands easier to do as well. Ed, don't you have a regular keyboard? If you do, the Insert key would be part of the Numpad set of keys, and not the one above the delete key. I do know that there are laptops that DO NOT have the Numpad; for this, if memory serves, the CapsLock key is also being used as a modifier. No, I didn't address your questions particularly, I want to leave those to others to deal with more succinctly. Hmm, I also find the insert key stretch with the ctrl key a bit akward, but the caps lock F combination is kinda akward also. Re: Alternative for Insert as Awkward Jaws Modifier Key?
hmmm, i always use numpad insert plus numpad8 for jawskey plus downarrow with no trouble at all. numpad 4 is left arrow, numpad2 is uparrow, and numpad6 is right arrow.
