We are aware about this conflict and awful situation for queer community 
during next years SotM. Nevertheless we decided to go to Africa next 
year. A long time we planned this. It was interrupted by Corona 
pandemia. We will do everything that _everyone_ who is not able to 
travel (and there are a lot beside the queer community) are able to 
participate nevertheless in the hybrid mode of the conference.


I'm very sorry about this and also aware that "kind words" don't help or 
change the bad situation of the queer community ..

I kindly request that the SotM Organising Committee provide a clear and 
transparent explanation for the decision to host the conference in 
Kenya. It is essential for the community to understand the rationale 
behind this decision, especially in light of the potential impact on 
LGBTQ+ contributors and other participants who may not feel comfortable 
or safe attending the conference in such a location.


Furthermore, I urge the committee to reconsider the choice of host 
country for the 2024 SotM conference. While I understand that logistical 
and financial factors must be taken into account, I believe it is 
possible to find alternative venues that align with the OSMF's 
commitment to inclusivity and human rights.


I share the concerns of many in the OpenStreetMap community regarding 
this issue, and I sincerely hope that the SotM Organising Committee will 
listen to these concerns and take them into serious consideration.


Thank you for your time and attention to this matter. I look forward to 
a productive and open dialogue about the future of the State of the Map 
conference.

[Talk-de] Panels, Workshops und Lightning Talks bei der SotM 2020

Hallo zusammen,

wie die meisten von euch wahrscheinlich bereits wissen, wird die SotM
2020 [1] eine virtuelle Konferenz [2] sein. Neben den regulaeren
Vortraegen wird es auch Lightning-Talks und selbst alle Arten von
Breakout-Sessions geben. Das ist eine gute Gelegenheit, die
Aufmerksamkeit in größerer Runde auf bestimmt Themen zu lenken! Also
beteiligt Euch lebhaft. Die technischen Hürden für die Breakouts sollten
nicht all zu gross sein!

Die Formate im Detail:

 * Lightning-Talks: Wie sonst auch handelt es sich dabei um kurze
Vortraege von etwa 5 Minuten Dauer. Diese Vortraege muessen jedoch vor
dem 28. Juni 2020 aufgezeichnet und hochgeladen werden. Weitere
Informationen dazu und die Anmeldung zu den Lightning-Talks findet man
im OSM-Wiki [3]. Wir bieten auch ein kurzes Tutorial ueber die
Produktion solcher vorab aufgezeichneten Vortraege an [4], das auf OBS
Studio [5] basiert.

 * Breakouts: Diese werden als Audio- oder Videokonferenzen durchgeführt
- woran viele von euch mittlerweile wahrscheinlich schon recht gewoehnt
sind. Weitere Informationen dazu findet man im OSM-Wiki [6], wo wir auch
ein Howto fuer diese Versammlungen vorbereitet haben [7].


   Falls jemand von euch eine Jitsi-, BigBlueButton- oder Mumble-Instanz
betreibt, die fuer diese Versammlungen waehrend der SotM-Konferenz
verwendet werden koennte, so fuegt sie doch bitte der Liste der
oeffentlichen Server [8] hinzu. Vielen Dank hierfür!

sera une conférence virtuelle. Néanmoins, en plus des conférences

Hi all,

as most of you likely already know, SotM 2020 [1] will be a virtual
conference [2]. Nevertheless, in addition to regular talks, there will
also be lightning talks and self organised sessions. Of course, the
format of those will be quite a bit different:

 * Lightning talks: As usual, those will be short ~5 minute talks.
However, these talks have to be pre-recorded and uploaded before 28 June
2020. You can find more information about this and the registration for
lightning talks on the OSM wiki [3]. We're also providing a short
tutorial about the production of such pre-recorded talks [4] that is
based on OBS Studio [5].

 * Self organised sessions: These will be done as audio or video
conferences - which many of you are probably quite used to by now. More
information can also be found on the OSM wiki [6] where we have also
prepared a howto for these sessions [7].

   If you happen to run a Jitsi, BigBlueButton or Mumble instance that
could be used to run these sessions during the SotM conference, please
add it to the list of public servers [8]. Thanks!

Hallo Tobias und Christoph,

das ist eine super Initiative von Euch!

Ich kann mir gut vorstellen, dass wir dieses Angebot auch gut für die
SotM in Anspruch nehmen könnten. Ich hab letztes Woche den DiVOC
beobachtet und dort gab es neben den normalen, "offiziellen" Talks ein
breites Angebot an "self-organized sessions" und "Assemblies, die mit
Hilfe von solchen Platformen (BBB, Jitsi, Mumble) organisiert wurden.

Also vielen Dank für Eure Arbeit, das zu sortieren und bereitzustellen :)

Yes, guidelines about length etc. will be send via email to the speakers
individually by the program committee. The wikipage will be used as
helpful link in these emails. It should not replace the email itself
which will be more individual :)

Last year we had a sequence with the SotM 2019 Logo and the speakers
name and title of talk at the beginning of each video. This was done by
the video team. I assume that they/we will do the same this year.

[OSM-talk] Help needed: OBS tutorial for Windows and Mac

Hi,

the program committee needs some special help :)

At the moment we try to help all speakers to prepare videos for SotM.
Frederik already made this fantastic tutorial for us:

But we know that not all of our speakers work with Ubuntu. Therefore it
would be good if someone could help by adding a chapter about how OBS
works on Windows and/or Mac operation system in this tutorial.

OBS is Open Source, works with all three operation systems and it is
recommended by VOC:

So this is the software the program committee "officially" recommends.

Of course all speakers are allowed to take any software of their own
choise. And of course we are happy if someone with knowledge in other
software shares their knowledge too :)

Wenn ich das taginfo richtig interpretiere, geht es ja nur darum das
zusätzliche Tag "opening_hours:covid19" an die relevanten Objekte zu
hängen. Und ihnen den Wert "same" oder "off" zuzuweisen:

http://taginfo.geofabrik.de/europe/france/keys/opening_hours:covid19#values

Das kann man später, sobald die Läden wieder öffnen, doch sicherlich
"auf Knopfdruck" wieder entsorgen.

At the moment I have no idea what we will offer "at the end" as we have
neither experience nor technology. This will develop within the next
weeks. I try to explain. The approach is small-medium-large. This means
we try to establish a small but smoothly running virtual conference on
our own platform. "Small" means at the moment two tracks at two days,
"day" may be extended to evening to have more time zone coverage. At the
moment I also would prefer that the speakers from the official tracks
have pre-recorded talks so that we can be sure it runs.

To be more concrete: the decision at our last meeting was to run with a
open source platform.

If we would fall back to a proprietary platform in worst case (what
means that ower own platform won't run) .. at the moment very unlikely.

If it shows that the performance is good enough we could extend to more
parellel tracks including lightning talks etc.

I hope we can provide lightning talks too :)

Kyle, the maintainer, is part of the local team Cape Town and was mainly
responsible for the video/streaming part of the conference. A cool guy
and a challenging project! For example help by a frontend developer
would be more than welcome, he told me.

Hi,

the deadline ended a month ago. At the moment it is not planned to call
for additional submissions. We will ask the speakers of "accepted talks"
first, and then see what the feedback is. If we have too much
cancellations, we would make an additional call. But this is not planned
at the moment, just a thought.

Hallo,

die SotM 2020 wird dieses Jahr virtuell sein.

Als Reaktion auf die SARS-COV-2 Pandemie inklusive aller Konsequenzen
wie Reisebeschränkungen, Versammlungsverboten, "Social Distancing" usw.
ist die State of the Map, wie wir sie gewohnt sind, dieses Jahr nicht
möglich.

Das Local Team – das bislang einen großartigen Job gemacht hat – hat
vorgeschlagen anstelle der gewohnten Konferenz eine virtuelle
abzuhalten. Das war nicht einfach nur ein Vorschlag, sondern sie haben
tatsächlich ein cooles Open-Source-Software-Projekt gestartet:
https://gitlab.com/billowconf/billowconf. Wer Lust hat hier
mitzuarbeiten, ist gerne gesehen! Insbesondere wird eine
Frontend-Entwicklerin gesucht.

Die SotM Working Group unterstützt diesen Plan und beschloss dieses Jahr
die SotM als virtuelle Konferenz auszurichten.

Natürlich kann eine virtuelle Konferenz keine echten Treffen ersetzen
und alle bedauern das (wir auch!). Aber nach einigen Wochen oder Monaten
Lockdown und "Social Distancing" werden ziemlich sicher viele froh sein,
wenn wir wenigstens diese Möglichkeit haben, und sich freuen, wenn wir
uns in Chats und Videos lesen und sehen können.

Das Datum der Konferenz ist unverändert, allerdings auf den 4. bis 5.
Juli 2020 gekürzt. Wir planen ausgiebige Q nach jedem Talk
und viel Platz für Diskussionen. Mit dem Ziel, dass die
OpenStreetMap-Community trotzallem ein großartiges Wochenende
miteinander verbringt!

Toutes les conséquences de la pandémie du virus SARS-COV-2 telles que
les restrictions de voyage, confinement, "social distancing", etc. font
qu'une conférence State of the Map 2020 comme nous y étions habitué-e-s
n'est pas possible cette année.

L'équipe locale qui a déjà accompli énormément de travail jusqu'à
maintenant a proposé une conférence virtuelle à la place de la
conférence physique. Ce n'est pas seulement une proposition, ils ont
déjà commencé un super projet de logiciel Open Source
https://gitlab.com/billowconf/billowconf. Vous êtes les bienvenu-e-s si
vous avez envie d'y participer !

Le groupe de travail du SotM soutient cela et a décidé d'organiser le
SotM 2020 comme conférence virtuelle.

Bien sûr une conférence virtuelle ne peut pas remplacer une rencontre
physique et tout le monde va être déçu (nous aussi !). Mais après
quelques semaines ou même quelques mois de confinement, "lockdown",
"social distancing" ... on va sûrement être heureux d'avoir la
possibilité d'échanger en chat et vidéos.

La date de la conférence n'est que légèrement décalée, c'est maintenant
le 4 et 5 juillet 2020. Nous planifions d'importantes sessions Q après
chaque talk et beaucoup d'espace pour des discussions. Nous avons
l'objectif que la communauté OpenStreetMap passe ensemble un week-end
formidable malgré tout.

consequences like travel restrictions, cancellation of physical
meetings, "social distancing", and more, a physical SotM is not possible
this year.

The local team - who have done great work preparing this conference so
far - have suggested to change the physical conference to a virtual one.
This wasn't just an idle talk:  they have already started a cool open
source software project - https://gitlab.com/billowconf/billowconf for
managing this!

So the SotM working group adopted this plan, and agreed to have a
virtual SotM conference this year instead of a physical one.

We know about your disappointment not meeting each other physically this
year (we are disappointed too), but after a few months of lockdown and
"social distancing" we are sure we will all be excited to be reading and
seeing each other in chats and videos. We will share more of the
technical plans as the date comes closer.

The date of the conference will stay the same, but shortened to two
days: 4-5 July 2020. We planned an extended Q session after each talk
and plenty of free spaces for discussions. So that the OpenStreetMap
community can have a great week-end together.

[Talk-de] Einladung zum OSM Hackweekend in Toulouse

Hallo,

wir machen ja nun schon seit einigen Jahren (seit 2012 um genau zu sein)
Hackweekends bei uns in Karlsruhe. Für diejenigen, die da noch nie dabei
waren: Es ist "immer das gleiche". Wir treffen uns schon am Freitag
Abend in der Kneipe, Samstag und Sonntag wird dann im Geofabrik-Büro
gehackt. Jeder arbeitet an seinem eigenen Projekt, es gibt keine Vorgaben.

Der Vorteil des gemeinsamen Hackens liegt in der Hauptsache darin, dass
man sich von den anderen Besuchern Input zum eigenen Projekt holen kann.
Die Leute die da sind, sind in allen möglichen OSM-Themen bewandert,
dementsprechend hoch ist das "anwesende Know-How". Ich denke, man kann
schon sagen, dass solche Hackweekends ziemlich produktiv sind.

Auch geographisch ist die Streuung ziemlich breit. Die Leute kommen aus
allen Teilen Deutschlands und es gibt immer den ein oder anderen
Besucher aus Großbritannien, Frankreich, Canada, Österreich, usw.

Insbesondere der Kontakt zur französischen Community hat sich (unter
anderem) dadurch enorm verbessert. Unser Karlsruher Hackweekend ist
mittlerweile legendär in Frankreich und nun hat die französische
Community "nach Karlsruher Vorbild" ein eigenes Hackweekend ins Leben
gerufen. Initiator ist Frédéric Rodrigo, den einige sicher kennen, da er
den Osmose entwickelt. Er organisiert in den Büroräumen von Makina
Corpus in Toulouse im kommenden April ein Hackweekend.

Die französische Community hat mich nun darum gebeten, der deutschen
Community auszurichten, dass Ihr herzlich eingeladen seid! Ein Austausch
zwischen deutschen und französischen OSMern ist in allen Bereichen von
OSM erstrebenswert. Ich kann aus meiner eigenen Erfahrung ergänzen, dass
es da sehr grosse Überschneidungen gibt. Ein Gespräch ist befruchtend
und interessant. Natürlich denkt man da erst mal an die Sprachbarriere.
Aber in der Regel können sich alle sehr gut mit englisch behelfen. Und
der ein oder andere Franzose hat auch etwas deutsch in der Schule gelernt.

Il y a un programme "scholarship" pour aider la communauté OSM de
participer à SotM 2020 à Cape Town. Ce programme a des niveaux
différentes de support. Ça commence avec le support pour les frais de
voyage et finit avec la couverture des toutes dépenses inclusivement
argent de poche. Le programme finit à 15 février! Vous trouvez un

Le programme doit aider tous ceux qui pensent qu'un voyage à l'Afrique

location for HOT Summit. They would like to hold their conference
adjecent to SotM as it was in Heidelberg.

SotM 2020 offrira un programme de "scholarship" - comme nous l'avons
fait toutes les années avant. Pour SotM 2019, l'équipe était
principalement composée des scholars de SotM 2018 et des bénévoles de
l'équipe locale et du SotM WG. Nous voulons changer cela (étape par
étape) et être plus ouvert à une communauté plus large. Nous vous

[OSM-talk] SotM 2020: Scholarship review team

SotM WG is looking for help and for support by the community!

SotM 2020 will provide a scholarship program - as we did all the years
before. In past year for SotM 2019 the review team was mainly formed by
the scholars of SotM 2018 and of volunteers of the local team and the
SotM working group. We want to change this (step by step) and be more
open to a wider community. So we ask for your help:

State of the Map is coming up this weekend. Are you as enthusiastic for
SotM as we are? And are you attending SotM in Heidelberg?

State of the Map working group is always looking for volunteers. Use
your stay at Heidelberg as a chance to look around and to think about
how you could help organizing SotM. What are the tasks that you would
like to do? What would you do differently? Imagine what has to be done
before such a conference. Is there something you would like to do?

Let us know what your interests are. In which way you could support the
working group. Approach us during the conference if you want to know more.

auch dieses Jahr gibt es wieder einen Poster-Wettbewerb bei der SotM.
Wobei das Wort Wettbewerb vielleicht etwas zu hoch gegriffen ist. Alle

Um das ganze etwas mehr in den Mittelpunkt der Aufmerksamkeit während
der SotM zu rücken, planen wir am Sonntag Abend im Anschluss an die

aber es hat auch irgendetwas mit Essen und Bier (und natürlich auch
nicht-alkoholischen Getränken) zu tun  :)

at the moment we have no venue for SotM 2020. There are no candidates
even yet. Hello world! Is there any OSM community who would like to host
SotM spontaneous? We extend the call for bids until end of August. We
would like to present the SotM 2020 in Heidelberg during SotM 2019.

Please use our wiki form for the formal part of your bid [1]. But don't
hesitate to ask questions to the SotM working group via email.

Did you ever consider to provide the unconference format? This could be
an amazing change to what we are used. Or should we just meet for a
barbecue? :)

Or how about an upgrade of your local conference to a global?

[OSM-talk] Anyone who likes to organize an ID discussion panel at SotM?

Hi,

reading the discussions about the direction of ID development and how
the community wants the ID at the OSM website I had the idea that there
could perhaps be a panel at SotM. Does anyone want to organize an ID
discussion panel at SotM? Please tell me or us (program committee in CC)
and we can consider it. At the moment it would be sufficient to have
someone (or more) who wants to organize it. All details could be defined
later.

As ID is a core feature at the OSM website I think this would be
suitable for the main program at SotM.

Additionally it is always possible to organize informal meetings, panels
during SotM in the unconference space (we will provide a lot of it).

By the way ticket sales is open. The Early Bird phase is until 7 July.
Program announcement will be around 20 June.

We will have our schedule meeting at 8 June. So it would be good to know
if an ID panel should be planned. Details for the program booklet should
be provided until end of July.

wir (Denis Helfer aus Straßburg und ich) planen wieder eine OSM Treffen
in Straßburg. Wir haben eine Umfrage gestartet, um den Termin festzulegen:

Wer Lust hat, dabei zu sein, ist hiermit herzlich eingeladen, mitzumachen.

Das Treffen wird dann in einer Kneipe in der Innenstadt stattfinden. Am
liebsten natürlich draußen, es gibt da ja viele schöne Straßencafés.
Denis kümmert sich darum, ich schick einen OSM-Link, sobald der Termin
feststeht.

Fürchtet euch nicht vor dem Sprachproblem. Wir reden Mischmasch
deutsch-französisch-englisch-elsässisch. Das klappt ganz gut :)

Bislang haben wir uns zweimal getroffen. Letztes Jahr im Frühling und im
Herbst. Wir versuchen da eine Tradition einzuführen im Halbjahres-Rhythmus.

Je ne sais pas si l'objectif et de traduire TOUS les noms de communes en 
alsacien.
Dans un premier temps, on peut déjà reprendre les panneaux qui ont été déjà 
traduits.
Je suppose qu'il en manque plein dans OSM.
Il faut absolument impliquer l'OLCA et leur faire comprendre qu'OSM peut être 
un outil de promotion pour l'alsacien.

[OSM-talk-fr] rappel concernant l'élection de OSMF board

bientôt l'élection de OSMF board aura lieu. Si on veut participer il
faut être membre de OSMF. Et il faut être membre un mois avant
l'élection. Comme l'élection est le 15 Décembre 2018, il faut s'inscrire
avant le 15 Novembre 2018 (si on est trop tard, on peut participer
l'année prochaine, les élections sont jaque année).

je veux faire un peu le "mapping" à Strasbourg et environs, aussi chez
nous à Kehl/Hanauerland, ou le dialecte est pareil. On voit sur les
panneaux de rue les noms régionals. J'ai déjà trouvé des examples comme
"name:gsw=Knowligass" pour Rue de L'Ail. etc. dans la base de donnés
d'OpenStreetMap.

Je n'ai pas trouvé des examples à Kehl. Mais c'est sûr, qu'on
voudrais/devrais prendre le même tag.

Ma question, c'est: on prend le tag "name:gsw" pour les noms régionals
sur ces panneaux de rues? Je demande parce que ne veux pas rater.

from 28th to 30th July 2018 the OpenStreetMap community will be coming
together for our annual State of the Map conference, this year in Milan,
Italy. It is set to be an exciting three day event where mappers,
programmers, practitioners, entrepreneurs, and policy makers will share
their passion for OpenStreetMap.

We invite you to submit your session proposals for the 2018 State of the
Map, by Sunday, 18th February 2018:

Hi all,

OpenStreetMap has not only an immense worth in its data. It is also the
international and worldwide community which is a real treasure. The
working together and all other aspects, I don't need to tell you ...

And as data are located in database and we nurse our database,
we must take care of our SOTMs (and all the other community meetings).
Our worldwide international SOTM is the heart of this. It is a community
SOTM and should stay. Maybe we invite business (why not, there are good
reasons for the community to connect with) and we also know the worth of
OSM tool development and we want to hear about the newest things at
SOTM. But nevertheless SOTM is an important place where community meets!

By the way this is what I work for at SOTM WG and also the reason I
joined it. And it was the spirit of SOTM-EU in Karlsruhe (thank you
Richard for your acclamation).

et cartographie, geocoding, routing, assurance de la qualité, le sujet 
humanitaire, cartes pour bicyclette, mobile apps et plus:

qui supportent le team video. On n'a pas besoin de connaissances 
spéciales. En plus on cherche des gens avec d'expérience pour la

Pour moi la langue francaise n'est pas facile. Je suis heureuse de 
trouver quelque mots et d'écrire ici un peu et de pouvoir raconter un 
peu d'organisation de sotm-eu.


J'essaie fortement de faire quelque chose francophone avec ce sotm-eu et 
inviter des francais (etc.). Mais ne me critique pas que je ne sais pas 
la langue parfaitement, ca n'aide pas du tout faire quelque chose ensemble.

[OSM-talk-fr] SotM-EU 2014 à Karlsruhe, Allemagne

Hello,

aujourd'hui j'ai la plaisir d'annoncer que la prochaine SotM-EU aura 
lieu à Karlsruhe de 13 à 15 Juin 2014. Nous avons lancés un site web à 
www.sotm-eu.org. Vous trouvez toutes nouvelles là-bas et sur Twitter 
chez @sotmeu les semaines prochaines.


Nous aimerions bien imiter le succès de la conférence de Vienne 2011 et 
réunir tous ceux qui font quelque chose d'intéressant avec OpenStreetMap 
en Europe.


Karlsruhe n'est pas loin de la France. On veux prendre cette occasion 
pour intensifier le contact avec notre voisins. On projete par example 
une matinée française et autres grandes et petites opportunités 
d'échange d'information.


Le moment nous cherchons une ou deux personnes qui nous rendent 
assistance de trouver des contributions françaises à OpenStreetMap. Il 
n'est pas essentiel de parler allemand. Si vous êtes intéressé de 
participer prenez contact avec moi.
