blah!
I am sick and tired of having to kill the TB process. This has happened in most/all versions I have ever used and I reported it many times. Oddly, the support personnel I have always been in contact with suck. They told me to turn off folder compression, so I did, and it had no effect, but damn I considered it a strange reply. Anyway, the problem is that mail stops being received. Hilariously, I see this EXACT problem as the reason some people have expressed they did not evaluate The Bat! for very long. Even more hilariously, they also mention the other main problem I have, keyboard shortcuts not being saved. Explaining to support that keyboard shortcut edits are not being saved turned out to be beyond futile, presumably because of a language barrier. You edit them, you click ok, you go back, they are not what you just changed them to. I must have explained this in over a dozen ways. So, my problems are 1) Mail stops being retrieved. In the old days before I bitched about this a ton, we didn't get the Some Tasks are still Active, quit when they are done message, we just didn't get anything and killed the process. They obviously know what the hell is going on because they added that dialog. My best guess, since they seem incapable of coming up with one, is that the retrieval thread is being `de-synched` when a server is slow, for whatever reason, perhaps it is slow enough that the timeout has elapsed AFTER a new retrieval is supposed to begin. IE, a timeout occurs 90 seconds after an attempt, but the retrievals are supposed to occur every 60 seconds. 2) keyboard shortcuts are not being saved, wah! These problems have existed in many versions, I won't accept being told simply to upgrade, and I could care less if others have not experienced them. I have never reported any bug or slew of bugs without being told vehemently that others have not experienced them. I am angry because I have spent... maybe 40-100 hours on all of these problems and some related ones in my history with The Bat!, it reminds me of a bad open source application in this regard. High TCO. I am evaluating Becky, but it misses just BARELY in some esoteric, but very important features I am afraid. Perhaps the plugin system can overcome that. I also wonder how well designed the plugin system for TB is. After all, you can damn near say every Windows application has a plugin system by way of catching Win32 messages and the like. Winamp's plugin system is an example of this farce, I wonder if Becky or The Bat's are. -Tomi Current version is 1.62r | Using TBUDL information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html

Downloading e-mail on to second computer
Circumstances require me to be away from my primary pc for a number of weeks. Mail is backing up on the server and will soon exceed the 10 MB limit. My laptop, which I am currently using does not have The Bat loaded on to it.I would like to install The Bat on to the laptop, download e-mail from the server, and, eventually, transfer all of the downloaded e-mail to the pc with The Bat, when I return. Is this possible? If so, how do I do this? In order to install The Bat on to my laptop, do I need a second license? If so, how can I determine if I didn't purchase one at the time that I originally purchased The Bat? Unfortunately, I do not have access to my purchase information. If it makes any difference, I also have a highly complex directory structure on the home pc, that I could not possibly recreate from memory. For the time that I am away, can I create a structure on the laptop, but when I load all of the laptop e-mail to the home pc, can I have the home pc refilter everything that is on the laptop into the correct folders. -- Avi Avram Sacks using (on my home pc) The Bat ver. 1.63h (I think); P4 XP pro. Re: reading confirmation
Hello John, MW Look under Filter Actions | Create Reading Confirmation (forced). Under Filter/Actions I don't see Create Reading Confirmation (forced) or anything like it. Sometimes I wonder if I have the same program as other people! In TB's main window Cntl+Shft+S will bring up 'Sorting Office' for the account you are in commonly known as 'Filter'. Account | Sorting/Office Filters will do the same. Create a 'Read messages' filter with '.' as the string and leave the 'Inbox' as 'Source' and 'Move' folders. On the 'Actions' tab select 'Create Reading Confirmation (forced)', and on the 'Options' tab select 'Execute action set of this rule by pressing the Hot Key:' and hit the keys you want. Or conversely just copy this filter and paste it into your office filters under 'Read messages'. --start- BeginFilter Name: Reading Confirm Active: 1 Source: \\ML MyDomain\Inbox Target: \\ML MyDomain\Inbox CopyFolder: none MainSet: 00. Actions: faoMakeRCR,faoRegExp,faoHotKey AddGroups: DelGroups: ForwardTemplate: ConfirmTemplate: ReplyTemplate: FwdAddr: RedirectAddr: NewAddr: NewTemplate: ExtCmd: ExtFile: ExtractDir: ColourGroup: default AddAddrItems: afiFrom, DelAddrItems: afiFrom, HotKey: 49223 IsOfColour: default SizeBigger: 0 SizeSmaller: 0 AgeOlder: 0 AgeNewer: 0 InAddrPos: 0 OutAddrPos: 0 InAddrGroups: NoAddrGroups: KillFile: KillMethod: 0 SaveTemplate: SndFile: SysSound: 0 SoundTime: 0:00-0:00 AllowTime: 0:00-0:00 EndFilter ---end--- You might want to edit your desired hot key on the 'Options' tab. -- Best regards, Greg Strong Using The Bat! v2.0 Beta/3 on Windows XP 5.1 Build 2600 Service Pack 1 Current version is 1.62r | Using TBUDL information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html

Hello Bill, In answer to yours of Friday, August 22, 2003, 6:39 PM: BBTE Sometimes things are buried deep in the menus. Thanks Bill. They sure are buried! I must learn not to ignore scroll bars! What will that 'forced confirmation' do? Will it confirm *every* message arriving at that folder? My initial question remains - can I 'force' a confirmation on any specific e in the whole account? Sometimes I might want to assure someone that the e has been read and will be answered later even though the message is from a new contact whose e filters to 'Inbox'. -- Best regards, John mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] on Vancouver Island, BC Current version is 1.62r | Using TBUDL information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html

Hello John, They sure are buried! I must learn not to ignore scroll bars! What will that 'forced confirmation' do? Will it confirm *every* message arriving at that folder? No not if you set it up as a 'Read messages' filter. My initial question remains - can I 'force' a confirmation on any specific e in the whole account? If you mean 'e' as in email, then yes with the your designated hot key. Sometimes I might want to assure someone that the e has been read and will be answered later even though the message is from a new contact whose e filters to 'Inbox'. You can use the filter how ever you want, however you may want to edit your 'Reading confirmation' template under the 'Account properties' (Shft+Ctrl+P) or Account | Properties. -- Best regards, Greg Strong Using The Bat! v2.0 Beta/3 on Windows XP 5.1 Build 2600 Service Pack 1 Current version is 1.62r | Using TBUDL information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html

Hello John, Thanks to you Greg and the other correspondents. No problem. To be honest I didn't know how to do it, but know some of TB basics. Re: reading confirmation
Hello John, If you just received a confirmation Greg, it worked! Thanks again. Well not yet. You have to be careful with using the confirmation with list messages. I ran under test with the default 'Reading confirmation' template on a TBUDL message. It replies to the list, so I think the 'Reading confirmation' template sends to the 'Reply-To:' address. On TBUDL this is [EMAIL PROTECTED] I would think you wouldn't be using with list mail, so the address should be ok. -- Best regards, Greg Strong Using The Bat! v2.0 Beta/3 on Windows XP 5.1 Build 2600 Service Pack 1 Current version is 1.62r | Using TBUDL information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html
