If you have a live mail scanner, then you'd be better off using a
TB friendly AV program with a plug-in to let TB scan the mails
rather than have the IP data stream suddenly vanish mid-mail. The AV
you're using sounds like it could be a bit overzealous.

blah!

2003-08-22 Thread io219
I am sick and tired of having to kill the TB process. This has happened in
most/all versions I have ever used and I reported it many times. Oddly, the
support personnel I have always been in contact with suck.

They told me to turn off folder compression, so I did, and it had no effect,
but damn I considered it a strange reply.

Anyway, the problem is that mail stops being received. Hilariously, I see
this EXACT problem as the reason some people have expressed they did not
evaluate The Bat! for very long. Even more hilariously, they also mention
the other main problem I have, keyboard shortcuts not being saved.

Explaining to support that keyboard shortcut edits are not being saved
turned out to be beyond futile, presumably because of a language barrier.
You edit them, you click ok, you go back, they are not what you just changed
them to. I must have explained this in over a dozen ways.

So, my problems are

1) Mail stops being retrieved. In the old days before I bitched about this a
ton, we didn't get the Some Tasks are still Active, quit when they are
done message, we just didn't get anything and killed the process. They
obviously know what the hell is going on because they added that dialog. My
best guess, since they seem incapable of coming up with one, is that the
retrieval thread is being `de-synched` when a server is slow, for whatever
reason, perhaps it is slow enough that the timeout has elapsed AFTER a new
retrieval is supposed to begin. IE, a timeout occurs 90 seconds after an
attempt, but the retrievals are supposed to occur every 60 seconds.

2) keyboard shortcuts are not being saved, wah!

These problems have existed in many versions, I won't accept being told
simply to upgrade, and I could care less if others have not experienced
them. I have never reported any bug or slew of bugs without being told
vehemently that others have not experienced them.

I am angry because I have spent... maybe 40-100 hours on all of these
problems and some related ones in my history with The Bat!, it reminds
me of a bad open source application in this regard. High TCO.

I am evaluating Becky, but it misses just BARELY in some esoteric, but very
important features I am afraid. Perhaps the plugin system can overcome that.

I also wonder how well designed the plugin system for TB is. After all,
you can damn near say every Windows application has a plugin system by way
of catching Win32 messages and the like. Winamp's plugin system is an
example of this farce, I wonder if Becky or The Bat's are.

I used to have that problem occasionally. It seemed to be a problem
with one particular email on the server. I would note where the DL
stopped and then go out and delete the offending email and then things
would work fine.

Since I started using the beta version for 1.63 I have not had this

Open the sorting office for the account which currently holds all the
filters. Copy each of them individually into a Notepad document or
similar. Now open the sorting office for the account where you want your
filters to be, highlight the entire document in Notepad paste it into
the filters.

Downloading e-mail on to second computer

2003-08-22 Thread sacksa

Circumstances require me to be away from my primary pc for a number of
weeks. Mail is backing up on the server and will soon exceed the 10 MB
limit. My laptop, which I am currently using does not have The Bat loaded
on to it.I would like to install The Bat on to the laptop, download
e-mail from the server, and, eventually, transfer all of the downloaded
e-mail to the pc with The Bat, when I return. Is this possible? If so,
how do I do this?
In order to install The Bat on to my laptop, do I need a second license?
If so, how can I determine if I didn't purchase one at the time that I
originally purchased The Bat? Unfortunately, I do not have access to my
purchase information. If it makes any difference, I also have a highly
complex directory structure on the home pc, that I could not possibly
recreate from memory. For the time that I am away, can I create a
structure on the laptop, but when I load all of the laptop e-mail to the
home pc, can I have the home pc refilter everything that is on the laptop
into the correct folders.

 1) Mail stops being retrieved. In the old days before I bitched about this a
ton, we didn't get the Some Tasks are still Active, quit when they are

obviously know what the hell is going on because they added that dialog. My
best guess, since they seem incapable of coming up with one, is that the
retrieval thread is being `de-synched` when a server is slow, for whatever
reason, perhaps it is slow enough that the timeout has elapsed AFTER a new
retrieval is supposed to begin. IE, a timeout occurs 90 seconds after an
attempt, but the retrievals are supposed to occur every 60 seconds.

Install TB! on the laptop. Create and configure the accounts. Download
the mail, then do a synchronization on just the folders with messages.

The synchronisation involves providing the laptop installation with a
current snapshot of your desktop system. The snapshot is created by
running step 1 of the synchronisation process on the desktop machine.
Copy the snapshot to disk and then using this, create the
synchronisation data file on the laptop. To do this run step 2 of the
synchronisation process on the laptop. It'll ask for the desktop
snapshot file when doing so. Finally, run step 3 on the desktop machine
using the synchronisation data file you created on the laptop.

I don't even know if it is failing. The Bat! does, and others have
experience the same. What should I do which does not involve any of my ISP's
next time this occurs to possibly at least isolate the problem to a specific ISP.

ISP, Internet Service Provider. Under this term I include the internet
service which grants me general access to the internet via digital cable and
modem as well as the internet services provided to me by school and
corporate sources as necessary, as well as those internet services provided
to me by the provider of my own website hosting. Just to clarify.

Are you using IMAP or POP3? Standard port settings? Any SSL or

POP3, standard port, no SSL, no AV, no firewall. Problem has occurred for
quite some time in many versions of 1.x. Problem has occurred for other
users I never knew of until today. Problem has occurred across many
reformats and on multiple machines.

Hahahahaha! Excuse my laughing Marck, but Comcast, according to my US
friends, probably can't even spell the word technical. They are one
of the, if not the worst, providers in the US.

If you need support, they are horrible, but horrible support is nearly
expected. One huge aspect of my business is excellent support, and part
of that excellent support is provided by The Bat! ;-)

Regardless, when I read that, I just sighed. I guess it's funny in a satanic
sorta way, but it gets old, especially when you experience the same from
most companies. RIT support is similarly horrid, except the people I was
talking to either cannot understand english very well or use that
possibility as a ploy to increase the users chance of giving up, much like
my younger sister doing the dishes in such a fucked up manner that my
parents were wary to ask her to do them again, she did it on purpose.

RIT support is similar to that of an open source project. I did not realize
that previously, so I was mailing them directly expecting quality e-mail
support, when I should have been asking the devout users on these lists.

Yes, it is.

If so, how do I do this?

My preferred method is as follows:
In the laptop installed Bat!, create a new filter that catches
_all_ incoming mail. Move it to the top of the filter-list.
Under Tab Actions select Export Message to file and name
the directory\file where the messages are to be saved into.
Choose Unix Mailbox file as Export format. Choose Append to
existing file.

This filter will create a copy of _all_ incoming mail into 1
standard unix mailbox formatted file.

[] can I have the home pc refilter everything that is on the
laptop into the correct folders.

This should be the easiest part. All mail received on your laptop
is in one file. You can now import this file into the Inbox of
the home pc (click on Inbox, choose: Tools - Import Messages -
From UNIX-mailboxes and select filename). Then choose Folder -
Re-filter and all imported messages are now processed according
to your home pc filter settings!

In TB's main window Cntl+Shft+S will bring up 'Sorting Office' for the

Or conversely just copy this filter and paste it into your office

If you mean 'e' as in email, then yes with the your designated hot key.

Sometimes I might want to assure someone that the e has been read and

You can use the filter how ever you want, however you may want to edit

Well not yet. You have to be careful with using the confirmation with
list messages. I ran under test with the default 'Reading confirmation'
template on a TBUDL message. It replies to the list, so I think the
'Reading confirmation' template sends to the 'Reply-To:' address. On
TBUDL this is [EMAIL PROTECTED] I would think you wouldn't be

The licences for the 1.xx versions are one-person licences. You can
use TB with one registration on different computers, but not at the

1.) You have a folder that moves messages From [EMAIL PROTECTED] to
 trash.

No, I have a filter that moves messages addressed to
[EMAIL PROTECTED] to Trash. This is what I want to happen.
Messages addressed to [EMAIL PROTECTED] are also being moved to
Trash, but I want messages to [EMAIL PROTECTED], including TBUDL
messages, to stay in the Inbox.

2.) TBUDL messages are being moved to trash.

May it be that only those you wrote yourself are being moved to trash?

No.

If all are moved, then de-activate the filters one by one and see when
the unwanted behaviour stops. That's be the culprit.

Er, thanks. I have about 50 filters, and I did get rid of them all,
but it seemed that the moment I put the first filter, this behavior
started again.

Dennis,

Yes. Right-click/Thread/Park. If there's a keyboard shortcut, I'm
not aware of it. You can probably set up a hotkey, though.
