New to The Bat!: Questions I can't find answers to
Greetings, all -- Longtime Eudora user here who had Eudora crash on her one too many times and finally decided to take the leap to a new client that's still being supported. I've spent some time playing with settings and got a lot of my issues tamed. But I still have a few outstanding. Can you help, or point me to where to look? (using The Bat! v.4.2.12.4 on Win XP SP 3) (1) Is there any way to replicate the Eudora method of having double-clicked messages open in the same pane as the message list (that is, not a separate window)? I don't like using the preview pane because of spam avoidance (both HTML bugs and just having to see the stupid things at all), but those extra taskbar buttons for each message really take up a lot of space. (2) Speaking of spam . . . am I really stuck with having to purchase an extra plug-in in order to get the same junk filtering that Eudora provided as part of the package? (Or are there freebies that I'm not seeing?) (3) I'm also strongly used to keeping messages in ascending order, and Eudora would always open a message list with the last (newest) message visible at the bottom. The Bat! is making me scroll down every time, and I can't figure out how to change this. Am I doomed to force myself to get used to using descending order (which I hate as much as top posting)? I think that's all for now. Thanks much for any light you can shed. Regards, Amy J. Over here TB places the cursor at the last message in the list that I opened, whether it's on top of the message list, at the bottom or somewhere in between. That might be related to the fact that I read my messages in the preview pane. Apart from that it's easy to find the first unread message by pressing Ctrl-Right. -- Groetjes, Roelof He says a thousand pleasant things, but never Adieu. http://www.voormijalleen.nl/ The Bat! 4.2.13.4 ALPHA Windows Vista 6.0 Build 6001 Service Pack 1 6 pop3 accounts, 1 imap account OTFE enabled Quad Core 2.4GHz 4 GB RAM pgpWLyqGPyHRE.pgp Description: PGP signature Current version is 4.2.12.4 | 'Using TBUDL' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html

The Bat! opens a new window viewing the folder containing the message you have double-clicked, not just the message. You can show or hide the message list in that window via its view menu. I don't like using the preview pane because of spam avoidance (both HTML bugs and just having to see the stupid things at all), but those extra taskbar buttons for each message really take up a lot of space. Linked images (HTML bugs included, obviously) will only be displayed in TB! if you specifically tell it to, either on an image-by-image basis or by whitelisting a domain. But why not just view everything in plain text? (2) Speaking of spam . . . am I really stuck with having to purchase an extra plug-in in order to get the same junk filtering that Eudora provided as part of the package? (Or are there freebies that I'm not seeing?) I believe some contributors to this list use free spam filters. I find that care with who I give my address to, coupled with appropriate use of disposable email addresses, keeps it down to maybe a dozen spam messages a week out of about 800 received. (3) I'm also strongly used to keeping messages in ascending order, and Eudora would always open a message list with the last (newest) message visible at the bottom. In the main window, go to View | Message List Columns and set the order and threading that suits you best. I don't understand why TB! is causing you to have to scroll down every time, as it has always opened my folders with focus on the last message I viewed in that folder. I think that's all for now. Folders on disk, missing from TB!
The Bat! Professional v4.0.38, Windows 7, no encryption since it cause me so much trouble before and turned out not to be secure anyway (when I restored from a backup of the encrypted install, no password needed to reveal everything!). Some folders seem to be disappearing and I don't know why. To cite one example I'm sure of, in Windows Explorer I can see folder X with sub-folders Y and Z. In The Bat! I can only see X and Z. I've done CTRL-ALT-SHIFT-L from the account's Inbox, from X, and from Z. In every case I get 0 lost folders found. Z didn't even exist before, I had X and Y and when Y disappeared, I thought I deleted it (Y) by accident so I created Z. Folder X has MESSAGES.TBB = 43 KB, MESSAGES.TBI = 18 KB Folder Y has MESSAGES.TBB = 3968 KB, MESSAGES.TBI = 316 KB Folder Z has MESSAGES.TBB = 84 KB, MESSAGES.TBI = 24 KB Is there anything else I can do to have The Bat! find these? It would be nice if the Inbox allowed folder-specific deletion settings, but as far as I can tell, it doesn't.
