Re: Cannot Assign ENTER as keyboard shourcut
Hello Peter, I am trying to find out a simple thing, how to make a keyboard shortcut for: MARK ALL MESSAGES READ in a folder. If I cannot make a keyboard shortcut, I wouldn't mind to make an icon on the toolbar. If you have focus on the folder tree, then there is already a shortcut, Ctrl+M. Just right click on any folder and you will see it in the context menu that pops up. Now, if you want to assign a shortcut to the main menu entry 'Folder/Mark all Messages as Read', then do this: - Open Customiser - On the 'Select Container' top window, click on the down arrow at the right end and the select 'Main menu (menu bar)' and it will be displayed in the 'Current items' window on the right. - Select 'Folder' and double click on it (or click on the +) to expand it. - Now select 'Mark al Messages as Read'. - As it has no shortcut assigned, nothing will be displayed in the 'Shortcuts' window on the lower right. - On the little window beneath, it should say 'None' (I'm translating from Spanish here). Place you cursor inside this window. - Now type your desired shortcut. The actual key combination you want, not the key names. - Then click on the Assign button and then OK. That should do it and you should be able to see your shortcut when you display the Folder menu. -- Best regards, Please support the wish for a 'Draft' folder at: https://www.ritlabs.com/bt/view.php?id=5441 Miguel A. Hello Peter, Thanks for the guidance. It is clear and easy to follow. The only problem is that I cannot change the NONE, cannot delete it or overwrite it. Did I tell you to delete it? ;) No, because you can't. Just do as I told you: - On the little window beneath, it should say 'None' (I'm translating from Spanish here). Hello Richard, M I can even see a 'Paste formatted' option, which I don't know what it M does but the name seems to suggest something Unfortunately it doesn't paste formatted from Word but it was so easy to align all my lists with the Tab button that it only took a few minutes. Glad you have it solved. Anyway, AFAIR, no text editor gets the formatting when you copy from Word and paste. Re: Smart Bat column alignment
Hello Richard, M no text editor gets the formatting when you copy from Word and paste That's another useful snippet of information learnt thanks. Although why Word can't make formatting exportable I don't know. Maybe it's time to give OpenOffice a go. It is not a Word problem, you would have the same problem if you go to OpenOffice. It is a problem between _word_ processors and _text_ processors. When you copy something from a _word_ processor, that includes all the extra information that you don't see (i.e. formatting, paragraph hierarchy, fonts and sizes, colours, possible indexing info, etc.,etc.) and the word processor doesn't know (it can't) where you are going to paste that. You may want to paste it just a couple of pages away, or in another word document, or Follow me? When you paste something in a _text_ processor, how can it know where it comes from to understand its formatting, etc.? Does a text processor have to understand the special coding (formatting) done by MS Word, OpenOffice, etc.? So, all it pastes are ASCII text characters with the basic formatting that can be done with ASCII characters like space and end of line and it strips all other control and formatting characters (actually combinations) it cannot understand. That's how it more or less works :) -- Best regards, Please support the wish for a 'Draft' folder at: https://www.ritlabs.com/bt/view.php?id=5441 Miguel A. Hello Richard, Another little thing learnt. I thought that Tabs were carried over in the copying. They may, but not always. Some times formatting done apparently with tabs is done by other means, for example paragraph indentation may be done by setting different margins for different paragraphs. -- Best regards, Please support the wish for a 'Draft' folder at: https://www.ritlabs.com/bt/view.php?id=5441 Miguel A. Re: For the record
Hello Marten, I therefore arrange for most of the incoming to be diverted to one account and then use filters to common folders to re-sort the incoming. In order to maintain professionalism I use templates when sending out from common folders. The whole thing is a complex interlocking of the excellent TB features. While 'your' bug is fixed or not ;-), there is an alternative you can use. If you look at Common folders as being the folders of an 'invisible account' (which is basically what they are), you can create an extra account which you can even call Common. In the Transport properties of this account, just include any fake or unreal server or none at all. And in the 'Options/Mailbox checking' properties, make sure that both 'Check mail-box at startup' and 'Periodical checking' options are uncheck. Also make sure that Ignore 'Check All Accounts' requests is selected (ticked). Now move your Common folders into this account, all your filters should be automagically changed/adapted and everything should work, including your templates. To be on the safe side, try with just one Common folder until you feel confident. You can always move the folder(s) out of this account to be Common folder(s) again. -- Best regards, Please support the wish for a 'Draft' folder at: https://www.ritlabs.com/bt/view.php?id=5441 Miguel A. Re: For the record
Hello Marten, I think I get your idea... but sine each common folder as I have them at the moment, has its own identity and template (i.e: they are all different) it would mean setting up 'dummy accounts' for each of them. No, you can move your full Common folder structure into the same account. Thanks for taking the time to think about it on my behalf. I didn't have to think about it, so no merit. Like Roelof, I was using 'common' folders before they were actually 'invented'. -- Best regards, Please support the wish for a 'Draft' folder at: https://www.ritlabs.com/bt/view.php?id=5441 Miguel A. Re: For the record
Hello Marten, I think I may have missed something then. Do you mean to say that a common folder inside a 'dummy account' can have its own identity and templates but that the new message template is obeyed in 3.62.14 when the common folder is inside an account? Yes, all folders (common or account), except virtual folders, can have their own templates and identities. Just try moving one of your common folders and see. -- Best regards, Please support the wish for a 'Draft' folder at: https://www.ritlabs.com/bt/view.php?id=5441 Miguel A. Hello Marten, Yes, all folders (common or account), except virtual folders, can have their own templates and identities. Just try moving one of your common folders and see. OK done it - tried one - it worked - transferred them all now and upgraded back to 3.62.14 so I've got my customised colour groups back etc etc. Yippee. Glad to hear that. If you've been on this list long enough, you should by now know that you owe me a beer ;-) Just for the record - the filters for incoming, as you said, still work but did have to cu and paste all 25 filters for outgoing to get the sent mail to go into the correct folder and be coloured to differentiate from incoming. But that's now done and works. Hmmm, I didn't realise you were using Outgoing filters. Were they Common Outgoing filters? If so, I think they only thing that would have been needed is the Account Sharing. I also did have to set the outgoing SMTP server to be the real one. But many thanks - I now have functionality back. So now you don't hate me anymore, do you? ;-) -- Best regards, Please support the wish for a 'Draft' folder at: https://www.ritlabs.com/bt/view.php?id=5441 Miguel A. Re: Smart Bat column alignment
Hello Chris, That's how it more or less works : Sort of... When Word (or OpenOffice) puts something on the clipboard, it puts it one there is multiple formats. I know that Words puts it on in plain text (the clipboard default), RTF, and Word format. When another program goes to read from the clipboard, it specifies to format that it wants. SmartBat probably only asks for the plain text. So, whatever Word puts on the clipboard in plain text is what SmartBat gets. I didn't know that. Tiny problem opening PDF attachments
Hello all, It's not a real problem, that's why I say it's tiny, but it' bothering me not being able to understand what's happening. I've always had Adobe Reader 6.0 and Adobe Acrobat 4.0 installed in my system and PDF files where always opened from everywhere with Acrobat. I believe this was because Acrobat had been installed after Reader and it had taken file associations. A few days ago I replaced Adobe Reader 6.0 with 7.0. I first uninstalled 6.0 and then installed 7.0 and, since then, PDF files are opened from everywhere (i.e. Explorer) with Adobe Reader 7.0, even when I use Acrobat Distiller and, after printing, the printed document is displayed. All fine up to here, I prefer to view PDFs with Reader 7.0 than with Acrobat 4.0 which is quite an old version. The 'tiny' problem shows up when I open a PDF attachment in TB, they always open with Acrobat 4.0. No real problem, I can view PDFs, but I just don't understand why this is happening. Does TB keep its own file type associations somewhere? I've searched the Registry and tbuser.def and couldn't find anything. Does anybody have any hint? As I have said, it's not a real problem but I'd like to understand what happening and, if possible, be able to view PDF attachments with Adobe Reader 7.0. Two notes on Drafts folder BT wish and that is it all on my part
Hello all, Last night Stephan suggested the use of a VF as a 'replacement' for a real Drafts folder and I assume it was him, but I don't know, who uploaded two PNGs in BT to show 'how easy it is'. Well I have added two notes to BT that basically say: To whomever has uploaded the two PNGs 'suggesting' the use of a Virtual Folder: 1.- He hasn't stopped to think what I am proposing and why 2.- A VF is NOT an alternative to OPF. 3.- With a VF, messages to be sent and drafts will still be mixed in the same physical folder, Outbox 4.- A VF doesn't solve the issue of distinguishing drafts from messages to be sent that the user has parked for whatever reasons. The park and draft flag is the same. 5.- With a separate Drafts folder, the risk of unintentionally sending out a draft is minimised as the user has to open the draft in Editor and then Send. 6.- A VF doesn't change the fact that you can still copy/move messages to Outbox, maybe unintentionally, and even with filters and with folder Alternate Deletions and you still need the euphemistically called Outbox Protection Feature. 7.- A VF is not a solution for the so called 'average users' who may not well understand what VFs are, specially at first, and specially for novice ones who are initially annoyed because they can't find the Drafts folder everyone expects at first. 8.- If I suggest that draft messages be always initially parked in not to avoid (or minimise) the risk sending them out unintentionally but of deleting them and perhaps waste hours of work. And something I forgot when I opened this TB wish: - A real Drafts folder should allow saving the draft message without having filled the To or Subject fields (required now to save a draft in Outbox). A draft is a non finished message/document you are working on and you may not know exactly to whom you are going to send it or what you want the Subject to be. How is that solved with a VF or with the current implementation of Outbox? Finally, whoever has uploaded the PNGs, hasn't stopped to think what the words 'concept', 'logic', 'elegance', 'simplicity' and 'intuitiveness' mean. And, as the Subject says, that is all about this Drafts folder issue on my part. I don't want to further discuss with anyone to avoid perhaps getting into 'personal issues'. -- Best regards, Miguel A. I have another good reason to ask for a Drafts folder, in this case also FOR ME
Hello all, Scenario: You start a reply to any message and 'Save as draft'. What happens when you 'Save as draft': 1.- The message you are replying to is marked as Replied. Why if you have not finished your reply? 2.- If you use Replied filters (I do) they are tested and, if the conditions of any of them are met, it/they will trigger and execute the actions. Why if you have not actually replied, you are just in the process of doing so? Possible consequences: A.- If you have any VF in which one of the filter conditions is 'Attributes is not Replied', because the message that you _are_ _replying_ to is already marked as Replied it will disappear from your VF (assuming that Auto-refresh works properly, as it seems in latest versions). B.- Depending on the actions of the Replied filter(s) triggered, your original message may change Colour Group (and in turn perhaps 'disappear' from other VFs) and even be moved to a different folder. C.- If you later reopen your reply from Outbox to continue editing, the original message you were replying to may not be available in the VF you were replying from, and perhaps not even available in the original physical folder if it was moved by a filter. Which is the best way to search for it, and where, to continue with the reply? D.- If you later delete your reply either directly from Outbox or after reopening it for further edit, the original message remains marked as Replied, with possible consequences on VFs as explained in A and maybe assigned to another colour group or even moved to a different folder by a filter. Why if you have not actually replied to it? Possible solution? Easy! some may think. They can add code (protection feature?) so that when 'Saving as Draft' (to the Outbox) the original message is not marked as replied and Replied filters are not tested, so none will trigger and no actions will take place. Yes, easy but there is a Gotcha! Assume the 'easy fix' is already implemented and you save your reply (partial or not) as draft. - What happens if you later go to Outbox and remove the park/draft flag and do a Shift+F2 (Send queued mail)? Yes, your draft is sent (it doesn't matter now if it was complete or not). But your original message, the one you have _replied_ to, will never be marked as Replied and, because Replied filters will NOT be tested and perhaps triggered, some possible actions on the original message will not be taken. Why, if you have actually replied to this message and even sent the reply? However, if there were separate folders for Drafts and Outbox... I'm sure you know what I mean, don't you? Why do I come up with all of this now? Yes, believe it or not I had this experience today. I was writing a reply, got a phone call and saved my reply as draft. When I finished the call and reopened the reply to continue... where the heck is my original message?!?! -- Best regards, Miguel A. Inconsistencies between 'Save' and 'Save as draft'. Bug or feature?
Hello all, The Subject of this message could also have been: 'More arguments to have a separate Drafts folder' I'll start by saying that, if it is a bug, it is a long standing one because the behaviour I'm going to describe applies not only to latest beta 3.63.14, but also to 3.62.14 and even good old 3.02.10, the three versions I have currently installed and that I can easily switch from/to. I have found this as a consequence of the testing done about the Editor 'Message/Save' (Ctrl+S) does nothing bug reported in: https://www.ritlabs.com/bt/view.php?id=5485 Let's see, when you have the Editor open, aside of the options 'Send' and 'Put in Outbox' you have a 'Save (ctrl+S)' and a 'Save as draft (Alt+F2)'. AFAIK, these the two options 'Save' and 'Save as draft' do the same: save the message in Outbox (not in Drafts folder, because there isn't one) and _Park_ it. The difference between the two options is that while 'Save as Draft' closes the editor window 'Save' keeps it open. So far so good. Before getting onto the inconsistencies, let me point out that the 'Auto-save' feature that can be set in 'Options/Preferences/Viewer editor/Editor preferences' is just an automatic and periodic way of doing a 'Save' and, of course, as it should, it also keeps the editor window open. Let's get to the inconsistencies, peculiarities or buglets. Assume you are editing a message and that you have not included yet the Subject and/or the To field: - If you do a 'Save as Draft' you are warned about a blank subject and not allowed to save a _draft_ with the To field empty. As I have said in some previous message, why can't I save a draft without the To and/or Subject if my message is not yet finished and I am not trying to send it yet? Yes, because drafts are saved in Outbox and not in a separate Drafts folder. - Now, if you instead do a 'Save' (or wait long enough for an Auto-save if you have it configured) you are not warned about an empty Subject or To field. Well, it is actually not required because your editor remains open and, sooner or later, you will either do a Send or a Save as Draft, and then you will be warned. But just you wait Mr. Higgins, just you wait, because you can also do a Message/Cancel (Esc) or click on the X on the top left. What happens then? In the case of 'Save as draft' (if you have reopened the message) and 'Auto-save' (which is supposed to be equal to Save but done automatically) you get a warning that the message you were editing has been saved and you are asked if you want to keep the saved copy (in the Outbox, of course) before closing the editor. But this is not true if you have only done a _manual_ Save, the editor is closed with no warning and the saved copy remains in Outbox. Why? Well, that is no big problem because the Saved copy (in Outbox) is actually Parked. Yes, but if you remove the Parked flag it may be sent unfinished and with an empty subject. It will never go out without a To, not because TB detects it (it will try to send it) but because it will be refused by the smpt server (I'm talking about POP although I assume it would be the same for IMAP) with a reject a message as not properly addressed. And actually, both for Save and Auto-save and also for Save as draft if you have re-opened the message, if while having the editor still open you remove the Parked flag (either intentionally or by accident) and then do a Cancel, you don't get any kind of warning and your now un-parked message (maybe unfinished or without a Subject and/or To) is in the Outbox and ready to be sent. I am fully aware that the probability of these possible 'awkward situations' occurring is minimal. Yes, but they would be absolutely zero, none, nil, nada if a separate Draft folder was used. Believe me, the more I think about it the less I can understand Stephan's opposition to implement a separate Drafts folder. I can understand a reluctance or even opposition to do it now or at least before other pending issues (i.e. fully working IMAP, which I don't use), but I can't understand a 'philosophical' or 'conceptual' opposition. Re: automatic read receipt stuck in out box
Hello Dwight, It shouldn't stay stuck. What happens when you open it with your editor and send it afterwards? Do you see anything awkward when you're looking at the message? they have been staying stuck here. not sure how long, and I didn't think much of it. Don't really like confirmations, and used to always say no, but I get lots of e-mail form a group I'm involved with, and one batch say it is important to them often to get confirmations, so EVERYTHING they send has a confirmation request. I've decided the only way to deal with it is to always confirm. From more than one machine if possible, so I always say yes, then I find bunches of confirmations sitting in the outbox and have to manually send them. Confirmations will not go out by themselves unless you do a 'Send queued mail' (Shift+F2). Do you mean they don't go out even with a Shift+F2? -- Best regards, Miguel A. Re: Pre programmed group
Hello Roelof, G What I want to achieve is that I just fill in a name say report in the to G field and this gets expanded to the right addressees. G Can I do this as a addressbook entry, or should I create a macro shortcut? I'd go for the macro, though you could place all of them in a singles AB group and use AB group templates to address all of them whenever you send a message to a group member. The macro would give you more control, the AB group would be automated. Address headers and Subject auto-complete, history, etc.
Hello all, I haven't been paying much attention to the list lately but I don't think this has been mentioned. Have you missed the Auto-complete options that, prior to 3.64.01, were available in Options/Preferences/System? Well, as I have just learned from the note added by Stephan to BT report: https://www.ritlabs.com/bt/view.php?id=4933 you can now set Auto-Complete options for each header separately. Just go to Options/Preferences/Messages/Message Headers, select the desired header and Edit it. Hello Chris, Can someone tell me where to find the filter log (re-filter mail, log option checked) in v3.64.01? Select 'Account/View log' on your main menu or Shift+Ctrl+A. I've looked in there, and there is nothing about filters. All that is listed is messages sent, messages received. Clear your log before re-filtering and you will see that filter actions are logged. For example, Incoming filters include a FETCH line. I want to find out why a filter that should be working is not working, but I can't do it without some sort of log. The 'log filtering resul ts' option is ticked, but if that is where the log is, then nothing is produced. You can test filters by selecting a message in your Message List pane, right clicking on it and selecting 'Test filter'. With this, you get direct feedback of what filters are triggered and the action that would have been taken. That is, because it is just a test, actions are not actually taken. -- Best regards, Miguel A. I did not consider the possibility that a color group can also be colorless, thus only be used as a special mark without modifying the mail's appearance in the message list (which I would not want). Yes, I also use colour (or colourless) groups and they are a good solution when a message can only belong to one category. Re: Best way to mark an email in a flexible way for filtering in VF's
Hello Martin, I would wish the memo auto view would be a dockable window, just like the attachment window or a header field (the way it's displayed while composing the email), just some kind of a small area that is always available if I wish to see it, instead of a separate window You can set up a View Mode that displays the memo field as a column in the message list. I do this for example for my faxes (which are forwarded to me by email as an attachment). The subject is always the same and I use the memo to describe what each fax is. -- Best regards, Miguel A. Re: eml attachment when forwarding mail from The Bat!
Hello Marck, This is a MIME forward aka Alternative forwarding. In this mode, TB deliberately attaches a complete copy of the original email. This is also the way AOL users forward messages. TB's difference is that it attaches the copied email to a normal forward of the message. This is less explainable. I can understand an overview of the text in the covering message for the forward, but a complete content copy plus images plus attachments? Very odd. That depends on your Forward template. If you have a nearly blank one (i.e. just with %Cursor macro) you will only send the attachment plus whatever you type. -- Best regards, Miguel A. Hello Martin, I noticed a context menu item in the message list called open reply (in specials submenu). To me this seem to mean look for message having the mid of the current message in the reply-to header. That would be something I would really need. As far as I can recall, this option has 'always' been available in TB. However it does not seem to work as I expect: doing open reply on a message that I replied to leads to the message: Reply was not found in most appropriate folders. Would you like to search through whole message base? and subsequently to the message Reply not found. But: when I do a manual search for the mid of the message I find the message and my reply (because the mid is in the reply-to header) in the same folder. What am I doing/getting wrong here? I don't know if it uses the 'In-Reply-To header or not, I would assume so, but it is working here with no problem. I use this option somewhat frequently and, unless I have deleted my reply, it is always found. I have tried it just now a few times (in case there was a problem with latest version) and it worked every time I tried. -- Best regards, Miguel A. Hello Richard, M That is a sign of maturity (an euphemistic way of saying that you're M getting old). Old is all in the mind. Maturity, yes. I can live with that but old - no way! :-) Just because the Gergorian calendar happens to tell you you're coming up to 57 years old doesn't mean to say you are old. OK, I can't cycle as fast as I used to be able to but I still do about 250k a week. Yes, I know what you mean. I'm 6 years 'maturer' than you ;-) -- Best regards, Miguel A. Re: Context menu Open reply: (how) does it work?
Hello Martin, I don't understand this. Tried it with all kinds of replies I wrote, and they are never found! Have a look: this is a message I just replied to, and my reply is just above in the list (both marked with red errors), and the error message that the reply cannot be found in the most obvious folders (whatever they are): http://www.aspekt1.net/ms/temp/openreply.gif I do get that error some times, but then, if I answer 'Yes', the message is found. That is what I mean when I say that my replies are found. They are, but some times after the error message and answering yes. Now I did some more tests and I found out that the message is found, when I put it back into the inbox of the account I sent if from (currently the message is in a subfolder of a common folder). So it looks like the function works, but is does not look in the right folders (even though it promises to look through the whole message base). Do you have the replies you are looking for in Common folders? If so, that may be the problem. I am not sure but I think the search for replies only looks in the account your are at, and not in other accounts or common folders. -- Best regards, Miguel A. Hello Martin, Do you have the replies you are looking for in Common folders? If so, that may be the problem. I am not sure but I think the search for replies only looks in the account your are at, and not in other accounts or common folders. Exactly. Seems like that is the case. Then either the function is buggy or the message ...whole message base... is confusing. I think I'd open a bug report. I have just done a couple of quick test by moving my replies to other account and also to a common folder that I have just created (I don't use common folders) and the replies are found if in another account but not in common folders. Hello Jeanny, Forgive me if this has been talked about already, but does anyone know if there are plans to create a Google Desktop plugin so that it can index email files from The Bat? Re: Putting a reply into the same folder where the original message is stored?
Hello Maksym, I'm looking for a more general way (something like a sent mail filter For each %ToName, move the message into %ToName folder). That is already possible with TB, exactly what you want. I use it for my family in my MAU account. All I need is an Outgoing filter with filter 'Any message' and action 'Move to the folder \\MAU\Familia\%ToName' Of course, I have an equivalent Incoming filter using %FromName. And I believe this also works with %FromAddress and %ToAddress. And if you tick the appropriate box, the folder will be created if doesn't exist. -- Best regards, Miguel A. Hello Maksym, M All I need is an Outgoing filter with filter 'Any message' and action M 'Move to the folder \\MAU\Familia\%ToName' M Of course, I have an equivalent Incoming filter using %FromName. And I M believe this also works with %FromAddress and %ToAddress. And if you M tick the appropriate box, the folder will be created if doesn't exist. Thank you so much! I didn't even try it that way after I tried some other macros in filters and those didn't work. But I've tried this one right now, and it works fine. Again, lots of thanks here! It's at least a big part of the solution I need. Sorry for my late reply. I've been busy and having hardware problems also. I know you would like that :) I'll try and play with other macros in the filter action. I've already tried %FolderName in the (vain) hope that if I start a reply (or a new message) from a certain folder, it will place the sent message into that folder. However, it turns out that this macro returns Outbox, i.e., whenever you start writing a message, TB! makes Outbox the current folder (even though folder focus doesn't move in the main program window). Does anybody know how to get (if it's possible) an expression to return Name of the folder where a message being replied to is stored? :) When Outgoing filters are applied the message is in the Outbox, that is why %FolderName returns Outbox. Try using %FolderName in a new message or reply template and you will see it returns the proper folder name (just the name, not the path). One thing I tries some time ago was to use the Comments header to 'save' the folder name. In my reply templates I included the line: %Comments=Foldername That part works. But then I tried to use %Comments in the filter and that didn't seem to work. Too bad :-( -- Best regards, Miguel A. Hello Alexander, Is it just me, or has someone else experienced this as well? Not that particular problem, but the TB window sometimes does indeed behave strange, ie. it stays in front or back when I put the focus to another application. I haven't watched this very close because its only been a major annoyance, and I'm not sure if its TBs problem, or the problem of the other application(s). Maybe someone else has made similar observations? Are you using XP? Hello Thomas, M All I need is an Outgoing filter with filter 'Any message' and action M 'Move to the folder \\MAU\Familia\%ToName' Either this is the last filter and all other messages are caught by other filters, you will need to key in the ToNames of your family members, correct? Hello Paul, But when they made the change they added the auto-complete possibility to many other headers. Why then repeat the list of headers in a different place? It is common practice in many programs to have access to the same options/functionality from several different places. This makes it easier for us the users to find what they want. You are right.
