Re[3]: Mail Server

2002-07-31 Thread Kurgan

Hello Pete,

PM Would I have to have a mail server program installed to do what I want
PM instead of using TB!?

You could use TB and BatPost together to achieve your server.
I'm using BatPost right now to send this message, and it's not even
installed on my machine. I've got it installed on a friend's server
300 miles away (I use it to get around a port 25 block --I just set
it for port 26!). :) The biggest problem I've had is simply
figuring out how to keep it up and running. If my friend's server
gets rebooted, I have to manually log on to the system (remotely)
and fire up BP (and then start it). I'd dearly love to figure out
how to make it do everything automatically, but haven't found a way
   yet.

Re[2]: Mail Server

2002-07-31 Thread Kurgan

Hello Allie,

ACM Why not create an shortcut in the programs/startup menu? Is there no
ACM CLI parameter to 'start' it up? If not, you could install PowerPro on
ACM your friends server and then use a macro that is executed on the
ACM machines startup. It would fire up the batpost and then 'start' it. :)

I must admit my ignorance for Windows NT. I'm learning as I go,
but so far there appears to be no way to add the program as a
service so it starts with the system. The server is set up so
there are 'desktops' for various users, with each of us remoting
in via a Terminal Services Client. Some programs install
themselves as services, such as Argo's mail server, but neither I
nor my friend can find a way to do it manually. Even if we could
find an area to autorun the program (each desktop has it's own
Startup folder that executes with the individual's log-in) when
the system starts, the program also needs to be started after
it's already been activated. In other words, when you run it, it's
sits idle until told to begin monitoring for mail. I do find it
ironic, in an almost humorous way, that the traditional hard part
was overcome easily (setup config), and the program functions
well, but the normally easy thing (getting the darned thing to
start by itself) is the problem area. I'll laugh later... :)
One other interesting point. I installed another mail server
(Argo, as mentioned) as the primary, and am using BatPost as my
private smtp engine to get around a port 25 block, so having BP
start with my desktop (so no one else could see it) would be fine
with me. However, we also haven't found a way to get a desktop to
autostart with the system. They only seem to be able to start when
someone logs in. And even *then* I'm still facing the program's
secondary activation, which it apparently needs to have done
manually. I could, of course, locate another server program, but I
really do like several factors of BP. First, it's by Ritlabs,
secondly it's really small, but fully-functional, and finally, I
can turn off pop scanning and use it strictly as an smtp engine.
Ideal for my purposes. I'm gonna tough this one out if it kills
me! :)

BatPost

2002-07-30 Thread Kurgan

Hello tbudl,

Since BatPost has no manual or visible support, I've started a
mailing list specifically for those of us trying to use it, so we
can compare notes, share advice, etc. It can be found at:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/BatPost/

I've got the engine running on an NT server via remote access
(Terminal Services Client) and could really use some help/advice
with a few things. Can't figure out how to get it to auto-start or
install as a Service, I keep having to remote in and start my
desktop to fire up the program. Looking forward to talking with
other BatPost users. :)

Re[2]: Norton Anti Virus 2001 and TheBat

2002-07-28 Thread Kurgan

Hello Sudip,

SP Things are not that self-explanatory. You still have to change your
SP TB! settings to route the incoming mails through NAV's POPROXY module.
SP See my message: [EMAIL PROTECTED]">mid:[EMAIL PROTECTED]

I never once had to do that. I only turned on email scanning in NAV
and it worked. Never had to do anything to TB. (I'm referring to
NAV 2001 and prior.) 2002 is even simpler than that. Love it. :)

SP Why does it get annoying? If you mean the dialog box that pop's up on
SP outbound mail scanning, there's an option, in later builds, to turn it
SP off.

Yep, that's what I was suggesting he do. Scanning outbound mail is,
to me, redundant, assuming NAV is doing its job in the first place,
and that stupid splash/banner (which cannot be turned off if the
outbound scanning is on) drives me crazy (I get/send a lot of
   email).

Re[2]: Norton Anti Virus 2001 and TheBat

2002-07-28 Thread Kurgan

Hello Sudip,

SP I find that incredulous ! AFAIK, NAV 2001 configures OE and Eudora
SP automatically but not others, certainly not TB!. Are you sure, your
SP mails were(are) being routed through POPROXY? It's NAV 2002 that scans
SP the default POP and SMTP ports, thereby eliminating the need to
SP configure a MUA.

Yes. All I did, and this is on multiple installs, so I know it's not
just a glitch, was tell NAV 2000/2001 that I was using other email
client. I never had to do anything to TB. And now with 2002 it does
it automatically. I am very pleased with 2002's integration.

Re: Norton Anti Virus 2001 and TheBat

2002-07-27 Thread Kurgan

Hello Mauricio,

mdn How do I make NAV 2001 works with TheBat ???

Open Nav and go to Options and look for Email. It's all right
there in order, and self-explanatory. :) You don't have to specify
The Bat!, just turn on email scanning. If I remember correctly, you
simply tell it something like other client or something like
that. However, I highly suggest upgrading to Nav 2002. As of 2002
it pretty much does it all for you, and you don't have to configure
it at all, it just 'sees' incoming email, regardless of client. Very
cool. (You might want to turn off the outbound mail scan, though --
   that can get really annoying.)

Oh...WOW!

2002-06-13 Thread Kurgan

Hello tbudl,

Ok, about a zillion years ago I was in here complaining about
wanting built-in smtp for TB. Tonight I had a straggler email come
in from Ritlabs that was apparently sent a while ago, because it
was announcing a new version of TB, and I already had it. However,
when I went to look, I spotted something on the front page, which
is weird because I normally never just go to the root, I always go
to /the_bat. So what do I see? BatPost Oh, please tell me this
thing plugs in smoothly for use with TB. That will totally make my
day! Man, if TB finally allows for full html somewhere down the
line, and if this smtp works, I'll be grinning for weeks.

Re[4]: New HTML engine?

2002-06-12 Thread Kurgan

Hello Mitja,

MP BTW: I solved most if not all of the virus problem by filtering mail
MP and looking for:
MP _*name=*.vbs
MP _*name=*.scr
MP _*name=*.pif
MP _*name=*.bat
MP *Content-type: audio/x-wav; name=*.exe*
MP *Content-type: audio/x-midi; name=*.exe*

MP Although this filter could be a problem if someone is actually
MP receiving this types (.vbs ...) normally (I do not).

I get all of those type, filter nothing, and Norton always catches
anything trying to piggyback on them. I've never gotten a virus
since I started using these programs several years ago, and I don't
filter out anything. I've also never had an intrusion since ZAP was
installed. Together I think they're virtually the perfect
combination, and I love the fact that they both support The Bat!

FULL HTML: The Bottom Line

2002-06-12 Thread Kurgan

Hello tbudl,

Allow me to sum it all up and offer the obvious solution. Lots of
people don't want it. Lots do. Some have spoken about being able
to click individual images and accept or deny them. From both the
marketing standpoint, as well as that of an end-user and long-time
computer junkie, might I simply suggest that the capability for
FULL HTML be available as an option for those customers wishing to
have an alternative to Outlook or Incredimail, but not making it
either default or mandatory? In other words, Hey customers,
here's your copy of The Bat! If you really want to have full html,
flip this switch here. We do, however stand behind the innate
security of The Bat! if you don't. Use at your own risk.

To which I would say, Friggin cool! and would turn it on for a
few accounts that are geared towards that sort of mail, but leave
it off for most of my accounts.

By the by, I tend to support software and organizations that do a
good job and keep me running happy for years on end, and I can't
count the number of people I've gotten hooked on The Bat! over the
years, so it's only fair I reciprocate a bit. If you're looking
for a quality email service, one which I am a paid user of and can
share my own experience of getting good service with, allow me to
suggest fastmail.fm. Great service, low price including free
accounts), and no, they don't pay me to say that. :) I'm just a
pleased customer sharing a good service with other email
enthusiasts.

Oh yeah, and Opera is the best browser! :)

Re[2]: New HTML engine?

2002-06-11 Thread Kurgan

JA Guess I need to give an example... Take... erm... SubSeven. Has a
JA small program that 'encapsulates' files... Run it onto a .jpg file it
JA increases the .jpg file by maybe 300kb... file extension is *still*
JA .jpg (no hidden extensions, or anything like that), and the file is
JA now executable, and causes infection with the subseven trojan.

Well, however it all works, or doesn't as the case may be, I can at
least say this. I've gotten tons of trojans and viruses sent to me
via email, and not a single one infected my system. I don't think
they could have really gotten past TB with it made the way it is,
but it never even got that far. Between Norton and ZAP, they both
monitor and nail anything that even comes close to my system. I
don't even have to think about it, they just automatically
quarantine the stuff. I think TB could handle more features without
becoming too much of a security risk. Hell, I also keep a copy of,
God help me for admitting this, Incredimail on my system! Yeah, In
know, it's wide open for attack by its nature, but still nothing
gets through. I even get confused when people on mailing lists
start talking about 'that darned virus' because I'd never noticed
anything had happened. Oh, and I use Incredimail for the fun stuff
it can do, in case you were wondering about my mental health. :)
Hey, it *does* have some pretty nifty features.

Re: spaces in mailbox names converted to underlines

2002-06-10 Thread Kurgan

Hello Tracer,

Jonathan may be right, but there is another thing that might be
causing you trouble. When you placed your installation of TB on the
cd, was it direct, or did you zip it all up first? You've got to
zip the entire folder up before transferring, or else you will have
to manually go through the copied folder (once it's back on the new
hard drive) and change everything back to having no 'read only'
attribute, which happens when you put the stuff on cd. If your mail
isn't coming into the new mailboxes, make sure to check that they
are not set now as read only, or else no new messages can be added
to the files. I did this once, and felt really stupid when I
finally figured out what I'd done. :)

New HTML engine?

2002-06-10 Thread Kurgan

Hello tbudl,

I saw that a new HTML engine is listed as being part of the new
version, but I just tried it and nothing seems different, at
least it's not doing what a typical html engine would. Is this
lack of function still intentional (I'm assuming for security
reasons) or am I missing some setting? I've been waiting for ages
for it to finally work so I can see inline images, etc. Between
ZoneAlarm and Norton A/V 2002, I'm not worried about anything
harmful getting in. It'd be nice if we at least had the option to
turn on full html, unless it's already there and I've missed it.
