Re: List index out of bounds (-1)

2008-09-05 Thread Marten Gallagher
 Hello Marten,

MG List index out of bounds (-1)

Nobody would tell you unless you specify the context ;-)

Oooh... Ithought I'd try the simple question first before goingto the
complictaed.

The situation when it arises is:

The Bat is running.

At an unspecified interval, irregular AFAICT I get repeated Error boxes saying:

List index out of bounds (-1)

They just repeatedly propagate one after the other.

There is nothing scheduled by Scheduler at the time.

There may be an automatic email check triggering it.

Folder maintenance hasn't cured it.

If I hit the red x in each box quickly enough they can all be deleted one ater
the toher and it seems to stop...

...until another unspecified period later.

URGENT question before I get plane

2008-07-16 Thread Marten Gallagher
Have transferred The Bat to another machine. Both machines have dual monitors
but different configuration.

Editing a template or creating a new template is opening a window off screen
and I don't know which Registry key it is to reset it to 0

Anyone got a clue?

This is always a pain because windows generally are not dual monitor aware when
it comes to following PC settings as do other applications.

Have sorted all the other windows but forgot this one - it's the window that
opens when creating a new or editing an existing template

This can mean only one thing. Exactly what it says. Either you are
specifying the wrong user name for this POP3 account or you are using
an incorrect password. And it makes perfect sense that, in such a
case, you would be able to send but not receive.

And while you are at it - check that the POP3 server you are connecting to is
typed correctly. That can give the same error I have found.

Common errors (aprt from just getting things plain wrong) are a space at
beginning or end of server/username/password - or indeed in the middle of
course. Commas instead of fullstops (points). l for 1, o for 0, _ for -, q or
g for 9, etc.

Filter oddities

2008-01-20 Thread Marten Gallagher
Thius may, or may not be connected with the other thread about filters, but
reading that has propted me to try and sort out a filter weirdeness that I
have been having.

My difficulty in explaining is related to not being sure about the
terminology for naming different species of folder.

I have the usual email account folders - i.e: one per email account.

I also have folders I have created within a folder called 'Other Accounts'

Email to these is from clients arrives having been re-directed at the
server to my main email account which filters the incoming mail on the 'To'
and places them in the relevant client folders under 'Other Accounts'

The problem is that any further filter opeations on those emails does not
work automatially but does work when manually triggered.

And yes - filters are set to continue processing, and yes filters are set
to be automatic not manually triggered.

Unless, of course, I am missing something.

Re: 3.99.24 - Weird focus issue

2007-09-21 Thread Marten Gallagher
I suspect it could be related to the dual display update thingy. For
example, does the program use any weird window hooks that could
 interfere with utilities like UltraMon?

For the record, I do have dual display but I never use The Bat! that
way and this has happened even when the second display was completely
 off.

I have a dual-display and sue Ultramon but cannot say I've experienced
behaviour that sounds like that.

I only mention it to maybe help you prioritise any diagnostic processes.

Re: Compatibility with two or more displays connected to the same computer

2007-09-20 Thread Marten Gallagher
No. It means that if you have two monitors connected to one computer
(see picture), The Bat! will function reasonably. It will remember
which monitor it was on. It will move between monitors when one is
 disconnected. Etc.

Except it doesn't...

Have TB main window on second monitor..

Open a message - it opens first monitor...

Move it to second monitor and close it...

Open it again and it does open on second monitor...

Hit reply - editor window opens on first monitor...

Move it to second monitor...close it..

Open original message again...hit repl;y...

Still opens on first monitor...

Position NOT remembered.

AND

Have TB on second monitor...

Disconnect laptop from dock...

Restart TB and it opens on second, now non-existent, monitor.

Close TB...edit registry to force TB to open on laptop monitor.

Hit reeive mail and connection centre opens on non-existent second monitor.

AND

Try editing a template...opens on second, non-existent monitor.

Re: Using a Reading Receipt Template

2007-09-14 Thread Marten Gallagher
 G'day,

Is there a way of replying using a particular message using what is
defined as the reading receipt template when the sender has not
 requested a reading receipt?

Essentially I received a message from a client who asked me to let him
know the message had been received. He had not use the request a
reading receipt function of Outlook Express so The Bat! would not tell
me that a receipt was requested.

I ended up sending him a normal reply when it would have been more
appropriate to use the reading receipt template.

Is there any way this can be done?

Yes...

DO you know how to use filters?

If YES...

Set up a filter for the client's email address, and add a 'Create a
formatted message' option in actions.

You can use Macros to create the reply from relevant parts of the original.

The thing is that I don't want to do this for every one of his

basis. I was hoping there would be some way of doing this by picking a
 menu item when needed.

Filters does give me an idea so I will do some testing and report
 back.

Filter Options tab...

Execute filter manually, execute filter with a hot-key.

Then highlight the message and hit the hotkey combo you set up.

Job done

That was the tip I needed.

I created a common filter shared with all accounts that is activated
by a key combination - in this case Ctrl+Shift+R.

It is set for any message and the action is to create a reading
receipt. I copied my normal reading receipt over the default which has
a bug in it. The default receipt actually acknowledges the message
from Joe and then says that Joe will reply if necessary!

The only bug for me is that it sends the receipt straight away rather
than just leaving the receipt in the Outbox for later sending.

Diff between Folder and Common Folder

2007-09-13 Thread Marten Gallagher
What is the difference between a Folder and a Common Folder?

I have a set of folders that I use to filter email from various senders.

Some are in the top level of the tree - parallel with an acxtual email
account's folder set.

Others are in a folder called 'Clients' and are thus all one level in.

These I think are just 'Folders' but I wonder if they were set up as Common
Folders...

basically I am confused.

The only reason I ask is that I have had a rash of disappearing folders
recently - all recently created ones. They have a folder in the 'Documents
and Settings' place where all emails are stored in their raw format. But
they will not reappaerar. (Even trying CTRL ALT SHIFT L or whatever).

Anyway I can live with that for now - I just have got no inkling of the
concepts behind 'Folder' and Common Folder' - their idfferences from each
other and their intended functions/uses.

 Hi Members!

For what is the FLAG function for? What does it do? I tried the help

It is a way of putting a mark against an email to draw your attention as a

It can be used in filtering emails to a flagged, tabbed folder.

XRay doesn't support authenticated SMTP servers which makes it a bit of a

 Hello Bat-Folk!

I had (then accidently deleted) a virtual folder that showed ALL UNREAD
 email in the account.

I see where I can create a virtual folder (and a common virtual folder)
but I do not see where I tell these folders that they are for only
unread messages. (I assume a common folder reads multiple accounts.)

How/where is that folder recreated (using TB! 2.12)?

Isn't it Right Click on Folder itself Properties Filter etc?

The Bat, Zone ALarm and a Trojan

2007-05-25 Thread Marten Gallagher
I am plagued with pop-up warnigns from ZoneAlarm about a

Trojan-Spy.HTML.Fraud.gen

Zone Alarm keeps reporting it again and again and again - hundreds of
reports today alone.

When I look at Zone Alarm details it says it is in a whole string of .tmp
files i:

C:\Documents and Settings\Marten\Local Settings\Temp

but when I look there - they are not therer.

A fourm message somehwere suggests that that is because by the time I get
to look there, The Bat has deleted or removed the tmp files.

Can anyone help me out with what to do about this?

What happens is that the message gets locked, so TB can't import it
and then the file gets deleted.
As the file gets deleted in stead of imported TB decides not to delete
it from the server. Therefore the next next poll for mail will
download the same message again, with the same result.
The cure therefore is to delete it from the server. The easiest
options are either TB's mail dispatcher or your ISP's web mail (if

Indeed that may well be the case - I defer to your knowledge. The trouble
is 95 per cent of people using machines wouldn't know what encoding meant
if you sprayed it on their eyeballs - so for contractual purposes one
resorts to the alpha representation.

There is (was?) also UKP. However, typing £ is easier for the Brits,

Easier but can void a contract if unclear.

Can any of you tell me how I would enter the symbol for the Euro while

The various reponses indicates why its a generally bad idea to use currency
symbols in email. Different machines display the symbol differently.

Thus all currency should be, I would suggest, follow this protocol:

eg: UK pounds = GBP
US dollars = USD
Ozzie dollars = AUD
Euro = EUR

 Hello again List,

I had to un-install and re-install TB yesterday. After the re-install,

When clicking receive mail, overtime TB gives a dialog box about the
certificate and to click OK without giving the option to add the trusted
 certificate.

In case of gmail, I was able to add the certificate. It is a pain to
click OK every time and for each mail server. Is there a way out of this?

I've been waiting and waiting to see if anyone replies to this message - I
have posted a similar message twice recently but never get a response.
Considering the usual prompt and informed replies to requests for help on
this list I find it baffling.

Yes - have added some - two filters specific to an acount and one common

Re: Editing Received Messages

2007-01-22 Thread Marten Gallagher
In a time where Governments are thinking of considering eMail as a legal
document it it more than being a 'bad person' altering such a document
(also when there is a possibility through exporting and re-importing.

An email is only able to be regarded as a legal document to the same level
as a paper letter or any other document.

I can alter a letter, I can alter a document, I can alter an email.

Since there is often a copy of the email at both ends - any alteration by
me of my copy can be held against the copy at the other end and any
falsification argued over just as it would for a paper letter or whatever.

Therefore, I would suggest, the ability to alter email headers for
practical local reasons is fine. Any email held up in a court of law can be
scrutinised and compared just as any other document would.

In any case, email can be hacked and cracked about without the use of TB!
if one is determined to falsify something.

EC Personally I also think an eMail should not be altered. In a time

Emails are alterable, we just heard (again) about how to do that.
It's a legal document only if it is PGP-signed (or equivalent), or
if the email on the sender's and the recipeint's computer are the
 same.

Why is it OK to export/alter/import the message, but not to do it
within TB? Doesn't make sense to me.

I've been editing my subject lines for sotrage purposes for ages - using a
filter that Roelof helped me put together.

What's the problem? I hit ALT -E a text editor pops up - change the header,
save and it appears back in a folder from which I move it for filing.

Admitedly it would be better if it could judst be edited in place and saved
back whence it came...but... this is THe Bat! and useful additions don't seem
to carry any weight in the development process. But that's an old gripe of
mine.

Re: How to create a User Group inbox

2007-01-03 Thread Marten Gallagher
 Hello Thomas,

it didn't work. coul u be more specific??

Copy everything from the first $ to the word endFilter (highlight then press
CTRL and C at the same time.

 TB! Message Filter
beginFilter
UID: [426246C0.01C5ED47.222E4CBE.6871FBBA]
Name: The\20Bat\20to\20The\20Bat
Filter: [EMAIL PROTECTED]@thebat.dutaint.com\0D\0A}
MoveMessage folder \5C\5C\5CThe\20Bat
IsContinue
IsActive
Ignore
IsSendNow
endFilter

Then highlight the account that receives The Bat mail.

Right click the folder and go to sorting office/filters

Right click over Incoming Mail

Paste

There should then be a new filter added.

You will need to go to the right hand pane and change the folder to which
mail is filtered - the filter I've gien you is set up for my The Bat
folder.

Try that and see how you get on.

Re: Lost ticker

2006-12-29 Thread Marten Gallagher
The only recent change in my system is that I switched from a 21-in CRT to a
19-in LCD. Could the ticker be pointed to an off-screen area and somehow
just aborting? Any ideas on how I might get it back?

Probably not aborting it may well still be there as a ghost off-screen.

Two suggetions of a generic nature:

A) swap monitors back and disbale the ticker. Swap back again an re-enable?

B) uninstall and re-install TB

Neither may be possible or desirable but that's all I can suggest at the
minute.

TB has certain issues with monitors (changing resolution and dual monitors)
which I am trying to document enough to make a bug report.

Re: Lost ticker

2006-12-29 Thread Marten Gallagher
Is there some registry setting that I might be able to adjust to point the
ticker back into the real world?

That I can't answer - the only other thing I can suggest is Plan B in my
earlier email:

Disable Mail Ticker using the settings...

Folder Maintenance - all

Tools - Backup everything

Uninstall TB

Delete the folder called 'The Bat' in Program Files (if your's is defau,t
instal)

Re-install TB and enable ticker and restore etc etc.

But thus all seems a bit drastic and may not work if the settings for the
Mail Ticker are kept in the regsitry and an unintall doesn;t delete the
relvant keys.

So PLEASE I would recommend waiting for someone else with more knowledge
berfore doing any of the above - I'm not an expert - simply that when I
have had windows position problems before - in other applications - this
has often sorted it out but not always.

You can create filters that operate after a main filter has selected out a

2006-12-19 Thread Marten Gallagher
This is what I want to do:

I want to design a view mode that will apply to 120 of 123 folders.

Then I want 2 folders to have a slightly different layout.

Then I want a virtual folder to have a completely different layout with
additional columns.

Could someone tell me where to start?

I have resorted to deleting all the standard available folders and leving
myself with a generic view mode suitable for the 120 folders.

But if I go to the Virtual Folder and change it manually then save it with a
different name that folder immediately (on saving) reverts back to the
generic view mode.

From past experience I guess I have to set something in several different
places and using several different arcane menus but I have tried every
combination I can think of.

Export messae to file using filter - stopped working

2006-09-27 Thread Marten Gallagher
Since recent version of TB a filter I have had set up seems to not be
working anymore.

I have as part of filter, the content of the message appended to a plain

Now all I am getting is two bytes (looks like a carriage return) sent to
the file each time the filter triggers.

The other actions in the filter work fine - a redirect, a colour group

2006-09-27 Thread Marten Gallagher
When you open the Export dialog box and select export format as plain
text there is a template box beside it. If you don't change anything
in there it just takes the default text from the document, but if you
put something in there it uses that as the template for the export. I
added %Text%- which will copy the text and not add any extra lines.

TB may be full of little quirks - but you are certainly not one of them!

Brilliant! Thanks... Works again now.

Leaves wondering why it worked before and needed this addition...

Cheers muchly.

I am using K9 Spam filter on my machine running Windows 2000. Is it
possible to configure The Bat! to Filter my email by adding:
X-Text-Classification: - to the Header line.

Yes

 I have ticked this option
in Configuration/K9 but then am lost as to how to get this to work
 with The Bat!.

I have simply set up a common filter that applies to all accounts/folders
that looks for (in my case) spam in the x-text lasifiction header and
instructs that filter, if f triggered, to send the offending ,ail to the
junk folder.

Re: Configuring K9 Spam Filter

2006-09-26 Thread Marten Gallagher
Can't quite figure out how to do that in The Bat!. Could you give me a
littel more step by step help please?

Click Account Sorting Office/Filters

Account Drop Down Box: click on Common Filters

Click on the funnel top left

Right hand side: Name change 'new filter' to 'K9 Junk' or something

COndition window:

Click on Sender, go down and click on Header Field

In new little drop doewn box either select X-Text-Classification or type it
in exactly as that (assuming K9 is adding that header field).

cotains = whatever K9 is labelling your Junk

Bottom half of window:

Actions

Add mark as read
Move to folder (and tell it which folder)

Click OK

Test it

Email using list fails if one address is malformed

2006-09-25 Thread Marten Gallagher
I am sure it used to be the case that the following did not happen:

I set up a list of addresses in the address book.

When I send an email to the list (in the 'BCC' field) with my own address in
the 'To' field, the email is sent to all the addresses even if one or more
fail for some reason (either error in the address, or SMTP server rejects
'cos it's unrouteable, mailbox full or whatever).

Now however it seems that as TB works through the list, if one address
fails, the send is terminated.

I have no way of knowing whether the addresses before the failed address
have been sent.

Am I seeing the same behaviour as everyone else?

Re: regarding Outlook

2006-09-06 Thread Marten Gallagher
could i have both the bat! and
outlook express receiving the same email.

Yes: both programs have the facility to collect mail but not delete it from
the server. So you would set one to do that - collect email using that one
first; then collect with the other which would deletethe email from the
server.

How could i make the change without creating troubles for people
 sending me emails.

I don't see that it would create any troubles for people sending you
emails.

You would however, need to SEND email from just one of the programs -
otherwise you would have some sent emails in one program and some in the
other. That would create confusion for you.

Make sure that under View/Global View Mode you have No View Mode. If
you have any other View Mode selected that will be what is used for
 all accounts.

Oh for goodness sake - it was that easy!

At last they are behaving - as far as usability goes TB's interface leaves
much to be desired I think.

What with font settings all over the place, view modes all over the place...

Thanks for the insight.

 No trouble here, so far.

What issues are you seeing and how are you setting/changing your view modes?

I have 'save' as view mode setting in Preferences.

I go to View Global View Mode Manage View Modes

I select the general view mode for most of my accounts (saved as Default)
and select all accounts in USe By.

I then select the threaded view mode and tick USe By for The Bat and CSS
Discuss.

I the select my ordered by sujbject for Junk and Trash

But when I go back in many of the 'General accoun t folders are in threaded
mode and sometimes it seems TB and CSS are in Default mode.

I have tried to see if there is a pattern byut I cannot see what it is.

In the Preferences, what do you have selected for the view modes option
 - mine is set to ask before applying/saving changes.

The best way to get them to stick is setting them in the properties
 menu of the folder.

I have tried that but it doesn't seem to stick there either.

I am going to have to start from scratch and see if I can see any
consistency in what seems to be a misbehaviour.

Re: Bayesit! Confusion - K9 alternative

I have been training Bayesit! from scratch and have had it
 catch nothing :-(

Turning on logging, I discovered that Bayesit! appeared a
 bit confused.

That was just a few days ago and Bayesit! has still not
found any spam (I guess training is just starting now).

I tried BayesIT again recently and found it getting things totally wrong -
it ended up 'refusing' to classify anything in one email account.

After taking advice from this list a while back - I am now using K9 with
absolutely wonderfully, accurate, consistent, and so easily configurable
results.
