use Mercury Mail, which is a free and very feature rich mail server.

TB is installead as server, long ago as I installed it.
Now I've a domain running on my local pc with a fixed IP.
Apache (under XP) is running well as http server, a
ftp server is running too.
But what do I have to do to get TB running as mailserver?

IIRC the templates/filters for using TB! as a mailserver are still supported by
Leif (see <http://www.pcwize.com/thebat/mailing_lists.shtml>, but only
targeted to lists with less traffic than the TB lists).
