Re: ASMTP?

2004-09-25 Thread Deborah Shaw
Peter Ouwehand I tend to think I got your post, which was approx
28KB in size.
+
My apologies to the list. I meant to sent the whole thread just to
Jack and a short solution to the list, but it got away from me before
I'd deleted the list address inserted by Reply All. When my short post
didn't show up in the mailbox three hours later, I noticed the list
address on Jack's and contacted the moderators to see if I could head
it off and kill it. Three hours after that, the big post showed up on
list. I don't know where it had been meanwhile. It's been a long time
since I posted a private message to a list, but it still stings.

Peter Ouwehand Do these Use specific settings differ from your
POP3 settings? If so, your ISP should have informed you. If not, I
would expect using Use settings of Mail Retrieval or Use POP
before SMTP authentication should have fixed access to SMTP.
+
The specific settings are the same as the POP settings. I tried both
Use settings of Mail Retrieval (Earthlink's suggestion, after I got
snarky) and Use 'POP before SMTP' authentication when I was
experimenting; both blocked the mail. This is the only configuration
that allowed me to both send and download my mail.

Jack Morrison Yep, that's basically it, and thank you again!
+
You're welcome. May I assume my conversation with Earthlink was
similar to yours? It's a script.

Just based on what you listed in the e-mail it looks like they're only
requesting that you authenticate with your POP settings to your SMTP
server.

Check Account - Properties - Transport - Click the Authentication
button next to SMTP Server - Check the box Perform SMTP
authentication, then select the option to use the same settings as
mail retrieval.

Right. It worked perfectly until Earthlink changed their mail settings

since the logical substitutions of new settings for old didn't work,
they wouldn't help me.

didn't, wouldn't, couldn't tell me--because the help desk folks follow a
script and don't, won't, can't think outside the box--is that the new

They suggested that I start using Outlook. But I don't use Microsoft

going.

After experimenting with the mail settings, I am now able to download
