The above is just one worm that gets distributed by Microsoft Virus
Express users and is a batch file. I don't think this necessitates
renaming the X-mailer in a perfectly good (and not virus-spreading)
MUA.

The people over at the ISP in question need to set up their software
correctly, that's all. A header called X-Mailer should not trigger
rejection as if it were a header called Attachments. Its not so

My guess: ISO 8859-1 is your default encoding set, when the message gets
saved the Bat notices that there are no 8 bit characters in it so none

Hi Jonathan,

Thanks very much for your excellent explanation.

Maybe you might want to take a look http://www.ordb.org and do a
lookup on there, see if it's listed.

It checks out OK:

The server explicitly rejected all probes, and has been deemed secure

I would have been surprised if an outfit as large as ATT had been
rejected, but one never knows.

I don't personally think it is a TB issue itself... more of an issue with the

I have switched to sending emails to my colleague's university

They probably won't get a lot of complaints if it's restricted to TB!

Re: Can Not Send Mail

2002-06-27 Thread Gerard

Hi Ravi,

O am not sure if this is what Roelof already did but you could try the
following.

-Make a sort email in TB! and address it to one of your other accounts.
-Save it as a draft.
-Go to the outbox, select the msg and save as (right click) MSG file.
- Open the file in Notepad and edit what you think is the offending
statement (X-Mailer?)
- Save the file
- Double click (if MSG files are associated with TB!)
-File should appear in your inbox
- Move to outbox and press sent.

It sounds more difficult than it is and it will give you the possibility
to have full control over the headers and see what the problem is, if
indeed it is there.

If that were the case, then it would filter out e-mails from Becky 2

I wonder if they filter out messages from real spam tools like

Re: Can Not Send Mail

2002-06-27 Thread Ravi Joshi

Just spoke to Tech Support at Cogeco. They were already aware of a problem with TB!
client, apparently other TB! users have been calling in with the same problem.

They downloaded the TB! last night and carried out extensive testing. According to
them, they have not found any problem. I revealed the results of Roelof's experiment
and they were quite curious about the x-mailer issue.

They have asked me to sent them this info for them to look into further. I have
indicated I will send them the entire thread discussed on TBUDL! So we'll see what
they find.

Keep you posted,

Ravi

Everything works fine using Becky, OE or Foxmail...so I don't have a clue as to what

I'll be moving to a different ISP in a few weeks, so I'll see if this behaviour

If I remember correctly you can send via the myrealbox smtp even if

password as for mail collection.

An interesting idea I guess. Would be an unusual method of filtering
to get viruses, unless they are explicitly blocking .bat files.
Although it'd be a really bad filter for it to do that.

What mass- mailing capabilities? You mean To, CC, BCC? That every
client supports? Or the ability for TB! to handle mailing lists? If
it's the first, then better block all mail clients, if it's the
second, better start blocking majordomo, listar, mailman etc, as they
are all mailing lists, and can easily be used to spam.

Everything works fine using Becky, OE or Foxmail...so I don't have a clue as to what

It would be a _great_ idea, if 'cogeco.ca' could tell you what they (their

Only, and I mean ONLY, with this information in back hand we will

external network card IP address instead of the internal one. (ie
using 1.2.3.4 instead of 192.168.0.1).

 3. When sending a message within TB! from my MRB acct. to my Cogeco

indicating the message could not be delivered b/c the Message

That sounds like a configuration error at their end. What are you
putting in the email? What are the to/from fields set to?

 5. I can send/receive messages using a variety of other clients...
 Becky, OE Foxmail

On the same accounts that fail in TB?

 12. When TBUDL tries to send messages to me they are apparently

I tried sending a message to Ravi by PM and via the list at the
weekend, and the mail to the Cogeco account bounced, with the same
message.

Interestingly, I just tried again, with a message sent via TB, and one
sent via my ISP's webmail service (so avoiding the use of TB). The
message sent via TB bounced. The one sent via webmail has not (yet).
This would suggest that the Cogeco servers do not like something about
messages sent via TB!

Very strange. Perhaps Ravi could confirm whether he got a message
from me via PM?

Hi Julian,

I had msg's bounce on me because the line length was to long. This can
happen because TB does not add hard returns when wrapping.
Could this be the case?

Until the 552 response everything looks fine.
According to rfc821 552 means: Requested mail action aborted: exceeded storage

So it's a bit odd that cogeco is complaining about message content. My

Hi Jonathan,

JA I'd find it highly unusual for an ISP to block based on email
JA client... in fact highly stupid. Not saying impossible, but highly
JA unlikely.

I have that feeling that something in The Bat's headers may be what's
causing problems with this ISP. Here are the headers from an e-mail
sent using TB and one sent using Becky (which Ravi says he gets OK).
I can't see anything weird with what TB is doing other than the order
which technically shouldn't matter. YahooMail, for example, throws
headers in all sorts of weird order.

Hello Gerard,

In Reference to your Posting on Wednesday, June 26 2002 at 01:18 PM PDT,

I had msg's bounce on me because the line length was to long. This can
happen because TB does not add hard returns when wrapping.

Ah... but she does add hard returns.

That is outrageous! This also explains why messages from TBUDL were
bouncing, because most people posting are using TB and therefore have
the offending mail headers.

No TB just works as normal but outward mail goes via Postcast Server,
a small adjustment in |Account Properties |Transport |Send Mail| just
enter the host name in my case the computer name.

Also for some reason that I don't understand spam has been reduced to

Hi Mike,
On Wed, 26 Jun 2002 22:07:49 -0500, you wrote:

My colleague was told by her ISP that it was because they
blacklisted certain domains. Since I have my own domain
(harlos.net), I had a hard time understanding why I would be included
with the likes of Hotmail etc. I don't do any spamming or mass
 mailings.

If the mail server that is reporting to be from your domain is on the black
list, then they'll probably ignore you. Or if you host your domain from a
DSL/Dialup connection for example, you may find that you have been caught in a
block that matches the whole section. Or even if you are sending mail from a
blacklisted block, and not necessarily have anything to do with your domain
[harlos.net].

I phoned their tech support, and was told that they block emails that
are sent via a relay (?SMTP relay). I'm afraid that my technical
knowledge does not enable me to fully understand or explain this.

An open relay (which is what they are often referring to) is a poorly configured
mail server that allows anbody the ability to send mail via it, even people that
are not supposed to. These often get exploited for the pure and simple use of
spam. Most of the time, they rely on external sources to do the work, they just
do a lookup on it (see http://www.ordb.org or http://mail-abuse.org).

I use the SMTP server at my service provider, ATT Canada:
 outbox.attcanada.ca

Maybe you might want to take a look http://www.ordb.org and do a lookup on
there, see if it's listed. If so, you may want to contact your ISP, and notify
them, although ordb.org does notify the poorly configured server's admin to let
them know of the issue.

I suppose that because my email address [EMAIL PROTECTED] does not match
my ISP's domain, it is considered to be relayed?

I highly doubt they'd do that, otherwise a lot of mail aliases would never work.
Take for example your ISP... I'm sure they run several other domains on the same
servers. If random ISPs decided to start blocking mail because the sending name
doesn't match the real name from what it's being sent from... then a lot of mail
would be rejected. You also get the issue as well with major companies such as
uu.net who provide line/server services to companies who then sell on their
services to end users. All the uu.net dialup accounts have some
location.some ip.uu.net or in that kind of format. For any mail to work in
the above case, you'd have to have a uu.net email address, which is not the
case, the sub-provider often issues one under their domain.

In any case, that was their explanation... I didn't suspect that it
 was a TB! issue.

I don't personally think it is a TB issue itself... more of an issue with the
ISP setup. I find it unusual to believe that a client would drop a connection
to just one ISP... but it does appear the the afflicted ISP is doing some form
of filtering, and dropping the X-Mailer that matches TB!. What really needs to
happen, is some direct contact with the actual people that run the server, and
not some tech support representative. In most ISP cases, the tech support
representative doesn't have that kind of information.

It sounds like your account properties may be corrupted. Have a look
at Account Properties, and check that you have the correct User Name
and Password in the SMTP Server settings, and that you are using the
correct SMTP server address.

One reason the TBUDL list may be rejecting your messages is that your email
address appears different - that is, the messages are being sent with a From:
or Reply-To: address that is different from the ones you originally
subscribed using.

Have you stopped receiving any mail, or just mail from TBUDL? Can you
collect mail from TBUDL in Outlook? Check your POP3 server settings

Are you using a forwarding address for TBUDL and to send message?
I used to use forwarding addresses exclusively and some POP3 servers
would simply reject mail from those addresses. The more common
problem was that most SMTP servers would reject mail being sent
through them unless the FROM and/or REPLY-TO addresses matched your
ISP address. So for example, if you had an account @softhome.net,
then you couldn't send through their server with the address
@canada.com.

I still think that this sounds like an account configuration problem.
For some reason, the mail server does not like the mail being sent
from TB - when you create a message, and then view the headers
(Ctrl-Shft-K) when the message is in the Outbook, are the From:
Reply-To: and To: headers what they should be?

With the messages from TBUDL, you cannot receive messages from OE or
Becky? This suggests that the email address that you subscribed from
is not the one that you are checking with your mail clients. Did you
get any of the confirmation emails back from the Listar address when
you subscribed to the list?

Perhaps your current account in TB is corrupted in some way. Try
creating a new Account in TB, and re-enter all of the server details
and email addresses from scratch. Do not try to import the data -
start again.

Other than this, I don't know what the problem is. Hope this helps.

Well, messages sent to your email address are bouncing, which is why
you are getting nothing from the list:

 The Postfix program

[EMAIL PROTECTED]: host smtp.cogeco.ca[216.221.81.25] said: 552 Error:

552 errors sometimes mean that the mailbox is full. You need to log
onto your mailbox (try using the Message Despatcher in TB) and see if
there are any messages in there, and if there are, delete them.
