It's a pain in Europe where your IP address can be in different
countries. Admittedly a VPN would fix that, but not always practical,
for example a 3G wireless (or even with an Ethernet cable) router or USB
stick rather than a fixed line DSL
connection.

If you are getting mail to the recovery address, I need to find out
why that isn't happening for myself.

I don't use email on my Android phone or tablet, but they seem to be immune,
i.e. no notifications when the IP address changes to a different
country

They only use it if a fraudulent log-in was suspected. I'm not
saying it's a great idea, but it's not a big problem over here.
Happenes maybe twice a year, and I change IP addresses several times
per month.

As mentioned, they do send this to my other, non-Gmail address.

That is definitely breaking an email client. Why should we need to
start a web browser at all having set up Gmail to use POP?

And what is the point of sending that error message to an email
address that Gmail blocks your email client from reading? Why
doesn't it use the recovery address or send an SMS? The Bat at
least has an account log, but not all email clients do or are not as
easy to find.

Just in case, take a look at this page (Allowing less secure apps to
access your account):

https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/6010255?hl=en

I had to use it recently for one of my less used accounts.

Not true, I use Gmail on the laptop that I travel with. I rarely get
it blocked, but if it happens I am informed that web login is required.

I receive the "web login required" email always on my recovery email
address.

They send the message to the Gmail address too.

Gmail breaks email clients every time you change your IP address. It
doesn't even send an email to the recovery email address about this.
When you by chance find the "web login required" in the error logs,
there are actually mails sent to the address it won't let you access
with your email client telling you it has been blocked! These of
course don't start arriving in your email client until after that web
login!

If there is any difference between your Gmail account settings in TB!
and your wife's, apart from usernames and passwords, that would
perhaps explain it.

Otherwise, Gmail and Yahoo both from time to time randomly disable POP
and/or SMTP on an account and you have to log into their web interface
to fix it.

OK, thanks. But still, I can connect to Gmail with TB!, he cannot. So
I have no idea what the problem is.
