Re: [Texascavers] Can Locklear please restrain himself !!

2016-07-10 Thread Geary Schindel via Texascavers
Thought I would reply to the Sleeze's post which I generally find some of the
best written stuff in my email box. I wish he would put together a collective
works of the Sleezeweasel and publish it somewhere. I would buy a couple of
copies.

However, I did want to point out something related to deleting the replies to
the replies from previous posts. Considering that I get a ton of emails every
day from a huge assortment of folks and receive the Texas Caves as individual
posts and not the daily digest, I actually appreciate having the original email
thread at the bottom of the post as it allows me to place the responder's
comments in context - sort of like a complete reference. I don't know how many
emails I get from folks that have deleted the original post they are replying
to and you can't make any sense of the post without reading the entire thread.
By that time, I've usually deleted the original post so don't have a clue what
they are talking about or can't find it.

So, some of us like the snot at the bottom of the article (included below on
purpose).

Respectfully submitted.

Subject: [Texascavers] Can Locklear please restrain himself !!

The caving community, like many other special interest groups, is largely
composed of humorless fools who take their absurd pursuits seriously. Let me
remind you again that we are talking about crawling into holes in the ground,
something that most rational persons would consider to be insane.

As Stefan has pointed out, more verbiage has been wasted on complaints than on
the original offending off topic comments by one of our more colorful albeit
crackpot commentators.

A far greater problem is those who find some particular posting to be
irrelevant and complain about the time required to read it who then proceed so
simply "Reply" to the list without editing out the replies to the replies to
the replies.

It has been repeatedly suggested that those who do not wish to read a post
simply delete it. I would go further and request that before responding you
delete all the truly irrelevant repetitive information that dangles from the
end of your post like a snottite. Please note that in this reply I have quoted
nothing other than the title of the offending post.

I personally think that Charles has done a great job of moderating this forum,
he is even more moderate than Obama! I would request of him that he remove from
this list any and all persons who repeatedly reply to this list without
truncating the appended gibberish including all those who include some
signature drivel at the end such as a quote from some famous person or a
statement of their personal beliefs.

As to those who voluntarily leave the list because of a lack of time or some
imagined insult good riddance! You've got plenty of time otherwise you wouldn't
have time to talk about crawling into holes in the ground.

In other words, always cut out the crap, never fail to sign your posts, and
never append any unnecessary nonsense after your name. Like this.

Hi Charles!

Many thanks for posting the rules. I am sure I must have read them in the way
back when I first joined.

Having not read these rules in many years, I made the wrong assumption that
topics posted here must be cave(r)-related.

Like you, I take advantage of the warning David provides to "delete now" if I
am not interested.

Again, thank you for re-posting the link to the 4 simple rules to follow while
a member of this listserv.

And, many thanks for remaining our thoughtful moderator. I very much appreciate
the time you put into making this listserv function.

Happy caving!

We have 4 rules: http://texascavers.com/rules.html

David hasn't broken any rules and no, he's older than me Bob.

I maintain the rules as list owner, that's it. I've always stated that this
list is self moderated. If you don't like a post that someone has sent out,
send them a private message if possible.

If you don't like the list and how it's run, anyone is free to step up and take
over, including hosting and paying. Or, it's just easier to delete a message
and go about enjoying your day. Personally, that's what I do.

I have no doubt someone will point out that David's posts say "off-topic,"
"delete now if you don't want to read it."

However, I concur that this listserv has a clear intention of being used for
the purpose of cave-related posts.

I know David L posts comments on the various Texas cave-related Face Book pages.

Perhaps the moderator of this listserv could politely suggest that David post
any non-cave related information on these other sites. And, perhaps, even
politely let David know that he might be unsubscribed if he continues to
improperly use this listserv.

Oh, I don't know, Frank. I think there is a greater need being served by
allowing such posts to occur without rancor. Some find them interesting and
amusing, and it's always easy to punch the delete key. If it's so inconvenient
to clean out your inbox of uninvited martial that is disagreeable, you may need
to examine some of your own demons.
