Hi,
I did just test it. It works as expected. The "Backlinks" tab is in the

[tw5] how do stroll and tiddlyblink compare?

2021-08-19 Thread Andrew Paul
I was trying this tutorial and
felt stuck when Anne didn't explain the difference between stroll and
tiddlyblink. Wasn't sure if stroll came out after the tutorial and she
didn't update it. Or if the tutorial is doable without choosing
tiddlyblink, and if so, how.

I also saw stroll might prevent tiddlymap. Are mindmaps possible in this
case?

generally, I am still anxious about choosing a platform to begin gardening
on, but TW seemed to have more support and development than most others, so
as a beginner to gardening, indieweb, and programming, am I missing
anything in my choice of TW? what implications are in this choice?

thanks,

2021-08-19 Thread Sandip Deshmukh

Hello Mario,

Thanks. Tried the plugin. It is useful.

There is one small issue, though.

Suppose, X is an alias for A. And suppose, B refers to X. The linking works
perfectly. Clicking on X takes us to A. But B is not shown as a backlink to
A. Or it did not on my wiki.

How do I get the backlinks also to work as expected? Do I need to tweak
some settings, etc.?

Jamm

You can do a lot with tiddlywiki macros and widgets, perhaps an infinite
amount without any javascript, but if you choose to build complex solutions
you are also using html, css and Javascript technologies which are all
reusable skills and essential knowledge for the internet.

I would just make sure my data in tiddlywiki was logically arranged and not
worry about the future its structure, technologies, tools and more all
allow you to move your tiddlywiki data on to other places without any
problems. Tiddlywiki is not a proprietary trap.

[tw5] Re: Do you already use https://talk.tiddlywiki.org/ ?

2021-08-19 Thread TW Tones
Folks,

I am on air because of Boris and others help.

On discourse I am very happy, we have regained features lost in GG forums
updates, dropping tiddlywiki title links on a thread converts it to a
markup link and a lot more. I believe we have an integration for discourse
comments on a published tiddlywiki, I will try and locate that. I can
integrate discourse with WordPress to maybe continue with my idea
of http://www.colabteam.net/tiddlywiki/

There are ways to apply an overlay to any webpage to refactor it to a more
compact look, so if none of the themes help I would not give up. Also I
don't concur with the criticisms when compared with google groups, Sure GG
makes use the the real-estate a lot more but when deep in a thread there is
way too much information on the screen you do not need. Whilst there is a
lot of white space on discourse I would like to reduce, it has all the
information one may want.

Reintroducing the ability to highlight code, edit after posting, and many
other new features like private chats make this far superior the GG and in
my mind a "no brainer" even if we want improvements.

[tw5] Re: seeing what the transfering of tiddlywiki to a more self-coded platform can look like

2021-08-19 Thread Andrew Paul
Thanks for clarifying, Tones and Soren. I had the impression that
TiddlyWiki was more cookie cutter, or could be if I didn't add or alter
code. "A no-code personal wiki system," I heard TW called. But yes, I was
seeing this as a future-proofing mechanism where I might want to migrate
some- or everything stored in TiddlyWiki to a different platform in the
future.

For more context, I was trying to set myself up to be able to transfer my
info from a digital garden on a more cookie cutter platform to a later less
cookie-cutter one, once I learned to code a bit. Starting
"non-technically," in the sense Maggie Appleton's articles impressed on
me.

https://github.com/MaggieAppleton/digital-gardeners
https://maggieappleton.com/nontechnical-gardening

It seems I still misunderstand the question of going from a manageable
Digital Garden to a more complex one, not having data transfer be an issue.

2021-08-19 Thread PMario

Hi folks,
When you join https://talk.tiddlywiki.org/ you will get a message from the
"discobot".

I will recommend, that you finish the tutorial, that it wants to "show"
you.

It will interactively show you the basic features that you should know
about the forum.

have fun!

It is highly recommended that you finish the tutorial that it will show

IMO it's fun and it would have told you, how to "transclude" content from
every other internet page ... if possible.

All those settings can be adjusted in your Preferences page. You can also
"mute" a category if you want. So you don't get e-mailed at all.

Switched too. Discourse is looking pretty good so far and indeed much
superior to GG. I did find the base config a bit spammy though, as users
are automatically registered as tracking a thread (and therefore receive

@cj and @Birthe, LOL! I think there's a generational issue going on there.
I know I tend to use too-small text, too-small line spacing, and too-small
margins, but I get such an uncomfortable feeling from gobs of empty space.

I think I'll get used to the interface. I'm hoping the functionality will
be better than Google. The animated timeline is sure annoying, though! :D

[tw5] Kookma Library and Plugins on Talk Tiddlywiki

2021-08-19 Thread Mohammad Rahmani
As Talk Tiddlywiki has better support and useful features for announcing
tools in a categorized form and also
great features to keep in touch with potential users. I decided to use Talk
Tiddlywiki instead of Google Forum for future announcements!

Still I use GG for reference and as a resource!

I would recommend to have a look at https://talk.tiddlywiki.org/

Best wishes
Mohammad

Re: [tw5] Re: Error when using musicsheets widget

2021-08-19 Thread Psalm 104:33 KJV
@Eric Schulman
Thank you, I was able to get it installed.

@BurningTreeC
Thank you for your work on this. I have been imagining and looking for a
solution like TW with musicsheets for longer than I care to mention. I had
never heard of ABC notation before this, but it was an excellent choice for
this application.

I would be happy to give feedback or help in any way that I can.

Re: [tw5] Do you already use https://talk.tiddlywiki.org/ ?

2021-08-19 Thread Charlie Veniot
Yeah, something else that irks me: I like one line per conversation, with
few columns of info (person who started the conversation, last reply
date/time, and subject (with a little bit of text from the message to fill
remaining space, that's fine.)

And: here I am with a nice 27" display, loads of room to stretch things out
horizontally, and the discord site ignores close to 50% of that horizontal
space with large left and right margins. What the heck?

I feel curmudgeon-esque today. Likely made worse by lack of caffeine ...

The Discourse interface makes it far better than GG, especially on
mobile imho. I think there are a couple of things the moderators and
 admins
 should consider:

 1. Allow cross-site replies; as seen above, it seems folks would prefer
being able to reply to GG posts from Discourse to ease the transition
 2. Allow easy access to GG posts from Discourse, especially if the
above is technically unfeasible or difficult. Currently, one cannot easily
click somewhere on Discourse to go straight to the GG post. One has to
either manually search or click on some bookmarked link, and then find the
 post manually.

[tw5] Re: Should we prohibit leading and trailing whitespace in field names in 5.2.0?

2021-08-19 Thread TW Tones
Trimming values, fieldnames and tiddler titles makes sense, there may
however be a rare occasion where this is needed, however I think the hack
would be to use a special space character (that is not trimmed) if you
really needed.

Of course when possible allow the default to be overridden if needed, with
a conscious action to do so. Just follow the standards eg in HTML input
fields.

I don't think I can go over there to play with it. When I'm forced to go,

Well, if there is an alternative interface, or an alternative way to
interact with the discourse site without actually having to look at it,
then I'll be fine.

My immediate reaction to the discourse site: It is busy. I don't know
where to look. Too many icons/avatars. I am overstimulated. It looks
like and android app. I really dislike mobile apps. I'm outta there.

Google groups keeps me happy because it reminds me of Gmail in regards to
layout. Visually appealing, not overstimulating,

[tw5] Re: seeing what the transfering of tiddlywiki to a more self-coded platform can look like

2021-08-19 Thread Soren Bjornstad
As Tones said, I think we need a bit more information about what you're
hoping to accomplish to give a complete answer. Are you seeing this as a
future-proofing mechanism where you *might* want to migrate something
stored in TiddlyWiki to a different platform in the future? Or you want to
use TiddlyWiki as a CMS and then publish using a different tool? Or
something else?

On a straightforward level, it's possible to quickly render some or all
tiddlers to HTML, at which point you can post-process them using whatever
tooling you want. I've been using this to crosspost my sabbatical updates
from my Zettelkasten
 to my
Jekyll blog
,
using the following rule in my Makefile:

sabbatical_updates := $(wildcard
zettelkasten_dir/tiddlers/SabbaticalUpdate*)
sabbatical_files: $(sabbatical_updates)
rm -rf /tmp/twout
cd $(zettelkasten_dir) && tiddlywiki --output /tmp/twout --render
"[prefix[SabbaticalUpdate/]]" "[is[tiddler]addsuffix[.html]]" "text/html"
'$$:/sib/Templates/Export/SabbaticalUpdateCabCrosspost'
python3 automation/crosspost-sabbatical-updates.py
/tmp/twout/SabbaticalUpdate/*

The Python script is about 70 lines and primarily sets up a YAML header
with appropriate metadata so Jekyll understands what to do with the post.
This is also the purpose of the
$:/sib/Templates/Export/SabbaticalUpdateCabCrosspost template -- it embeds
certain fields in the HTML where this script can retrieve it. If you
preferred, I think you could use pandoc at this point to convert back to
Markdown or a similar format; since I'm keeping my source of record in
TiddlyWiki, I'm fine just leaving the posts as HTML in Jekyll.

Of course, if you take advantage of dynamic features of TiddlyWiki that
can't be represented as HTML with 100% fidelity, e.g. dynamic lists based
on filters or displays of backlinks, you'll end up losing some
functionality when you do this.

[tw5] Re: seeing what the transfering of tiddlywiki to a more self-coded platform can look like

2021-08-19 Thread Finn Lancaster
Jamm,

How about using the fact of JSON Tiddlers to your advantage? Just export
your tiddlers to JSON
(https://tiddlywiki.com/static/How%2520to%2520export%2520tiddlers.html),
and then you have a standard file format you can write a script to transfer
from into another format. I've never personally used gatsby or jekyll for
my site/blog, but I can imaging the user of JSON would ease the process
considerably.

Let me know what you think!

According to that error message, the
*music-score/widgets/musicsheets.js* module needs to also have
 *music-score/abcjs-midi.js* installed.

 *
indicates that , the "Music Sheets and Midi" plugin has the following
 components:

- $:/plugins/tiddlywiki/music-score/abcjs-midi.css

- $:/plugins/tiddlywiki/music-score/abcjs-midi.js

- $:/plugins/tiddlywiki/music-score/readme

- $:/plugins/tiddlywiki/music-score/soundfonts/grand-piano.json

- $:/plugins/tiddlywiki/music-score/soundfonts/tuba.json

- $:/plugins/tiddlywiki/music-score/widgets/musicsheet.js

Thus, to properly install the plugin, you should drag-and-drop
 *http://musicsheets.tiddlyspot.com/#%24%3A%2Fplugins%2Ftiddlywiki%2Fmusic-score

 *
onto your TiddlyWiki and import it. Then save-and-reload so all the
 components can be unpacked.

[tw5] "I moved to Discourse" - add your name too?

2021-08-19 Thread David Gifford
Hi everyone

I am moving to Discourse and don't plan to post here anymore.

Rather than have each of us do this as a separate thread, maybe everyone
who does the same as me might want to just reply to this thread to add
their names to the list. So people can see this is a serious exodus from
one platform to the other. Maybe that will encourage more people to do the
same.

Blessings.

Not a feature but a reason:

The plan is to eventually make this group read only and move all
discussions to Discourse. Actively using Discourse now, and not just for
testing, will allow us to discover any pain points etc and make a more
informed decision about whether we do want to make that permanent move to

Hi Simon,

Let me just add my vote to such an update. ABC is a spectacular language
for expressing scores of western traditional music, and your adaptation of
abcjs is one of the most striking example of integration of an external
Javascript library into a TiddlyWiki plugin. A great addition to any TW5
demo!
Cheers,

You are right, we should trim field names. There is some time left to do

Re: [tw5] Should we prohibit leading and trailing whitespace in field names in 5.2.0?

2021-08-19 Thread Mohammad Rahmani
Hi Soren,

I absolutely support removing such spaces in the *field name*! Those spaces
are not displayed visually and are a source of error!
I even support trimming *field values *when they are saved!

I had encountered such cases many times and it took me a lot of time to
find the cause of error!

I believe having clear, simple to follow, semantic rules are much better to
have a lot of flexibility!
Normally users get confused, these cause errors for advanced users if they
do not care enough and are mostly time consuming!

Best wishes
Mohammad
