Use a multimeter to see if the DB25 pin 2 is -12V, if so you have a
standard RS232 serial port. Then connect to it, use a USB-RS232 interface
if necessary, and type SYST:STAT?
you will see the status page out of the Z3805 (use 9600,N,8,1 for the
serial settings).

A full blown 3048 has (at least) two spectrum analyzers, a DVM, and a
counter. The basic system gets by doing the counter and DVM stuff with the

get very far at all without the 3561A. The first thing it does is to
On the unit I bought from fluke.l, with a Samsung label, there are two
serial ports. The bottom one is the control port and is definitely
RS-232. The top port has only three wires (TXD, RXD, SG) and I think is
used for some sort of monitoring.

Hi
I've been using Ulrich's software on my 3805's as well.
Trimble and HP took different approaches on their GPSDO's. Trimble lets you get
into things and fiddle around. HP is much more a black box. I have never seen
anything that lets you fiddle' with one of the HP units. Things like loop
The Z3805A has two serial ports, both of which are RS-232. Serial Port 2
broadcasts time of day only and will not accept scpi commands. Serial Port 1
shoudl be used for scpi control.

Dear Azelio,
Thank you. I left the receivers running since yesterday and they are still
solid lock state. I will measure pin 2 as you kindly stated. I will come back
with the results. Thank you for pointing out this test. You are always willing
to help!
Kind regards,

Dear John,
Very interesting. I haven't had the time to compare the Samsung branded units
with the typical HP units. Mine is the later. It only has one communications
port, plus 2x10 MHz and 2x 1PPS. As soon as I am done with the late family
breakfast I will do some testing and let you know
Dear Bob,
I agree. I have been playing around with two TBolts for my thesis work and they
are just great. HP as some circles have stated, are plug and forget GPSDOs.
Still I love the looks, construction and the fact that they match with the rest
of the HP equipment here in the lab.

Dear Chuck,
Now it has been nice to put a face to a name (at least electronically). I
completed the installation of your software and as soon as I determine the
class of communication port my GPSDOs have, I will comment back to you my
experiences with your monitor. Installation was a breeze. I
Hi Edgardo --
I don't know a lot about the Z3805 variations other than what's on
fluke.l's site, which can be a bit confusing. All were made by (for)
HP/Agilent/Symmetricom, but there were apparently at least two
official variations.
Mine is the Samsung version, which has the same 10811A
Dear John,
Thank you for your explanation on the Z3805A models. Mine is identical to the

design all around. I haven't opened them yet. They still have calibration seals

Now I will check if communications port is either RS-232 or RS-422 as per
Azelio advise. Once done, I will try Chuck's monitoring and command software.

Hi;
I recently found a few Wenzel oscillators with the 10811B 58503A/B style case
and connections. These are hermetically sealed unlike the HP units. Does anyone
know what product these were used in or any other information about these?
Thanks;

Hi
The DOD bought a *lot* of 10811 equivalents as replacement parts for various
repair needs. I suspect everybody in the business made parts in that package.

John,
I believe Edgardo bought the reprogrammed 58503A unit (was a Z3805A before)
from Ebay.
I have the same units recently purchased from yinxhu(sp?) on Ebay and Edgardo
just confirmed these are indeed 16 channel units with true 10811 Docxos.
Explains why they work so great..

Thanks for the info. I was hoping it was an ultra premium replacement. Maybe it

Dear Said,
Thank you. It seems I ended up buying the same units and from the same
provider. I recall you mentioning before I got mine about the availability of
those models in the Asia-Pacific region. That explains clearly the capabilities
and quality of the units. I just ran the tests Azelio
Sounds like another source of this confusion is that there is more than one
version of the HP10811 inner heater circuit.

Hi
The DOD spec was an abbreviated version of the full HP spec. The parts they
bought went into anything with that socket (not just 10811). I'd bet it's a
fairly good OCXO, but probably not 100% a 10811.

I think the Z3801A has the 6 channel receiver, the Z3805A seems to have the
16 channel GPS.
Otherwise very similar I think.. both have the 10811 DOCXO, and very

There's another telco model that has an MTI 260 oscillator, that I
