Now that 5.5.9 is released, I can look into more complex/risky issues.

I see you have done a lot of research, which identifies the problem very
clearly. However, I don't really like the proposed solution. How about simply
setting the manager field to null since this is the cause of the problem ?
Calling recycle on all sessions in StandardManager.stop could do this easily.

If JSP custom tag handling is enabled, a tag is returned to the pool after
calling doEndTag(). release() is only called when the tag is removed from the
pool. So any attribute values will still be set on the next use unless
explicitly set in the JSP, also any allocated resources will remain allocated,
etc.. I know that tag pooling can be disabled, but it's a bit restrictive to
have to switch off all tag pooling if you have any tag which can't cope with
not having its release() method called after each use.

I for one applaud BEA for adding synonyms where necessary to make their JDK more
interoperable with Sun's at a command line argument level.

I believe it would be for the best if all non-Sun JDK's accepted all the Sun JDK
arguments -- even as no-ops -- so as to provide a more seamless porting
experience.

IBM would be the counter-example to this. Their JDK refuses to start when
commonly used Sun JDK arguments (e.g. -server) are used, which forces
obnoxious contortions into installlation/configuration software to deal with
this unnecessary inconsistency.

No, I will not apply your proposed fix. As it is, I cannot reproduce any problem
using the provided tester (so if I cannot do it using a microtest, it is even
less likely to occur in HTTP land). Maybe thread startup time is too slow on my
test machine.

I see that there's a flaw in the current syncing, however, and I am willing to
apply the attached patch which should resolve the problem.

You'll have to use the fully qualified name for your class. Generally, it's not

Nothing is done asynchronously in the JNDI realm, and it should limit itself to
one connection to the backend. If you have a problem, you need to look into the
JNDI realm sourcecode, as your asumptions on the realm do not correspond to how
it works (or at least, how it is supposed to work).

Anyway, since this was not reported against Tomcat 5.5, I will not close the
report.

cvs commit: jakarta-tomcat-jasper/jasper2/src/share/org/apache/jasper/servlet JasperLoader.java

2005-03-29 Thread luehe
luehe 2005/03/29 10:33:21

  Modified:jasper2/src/share/org/apache/jasper/servlet
JasperLoader.java
  Log:
Simplified the loading of class resources in JasperLoader.

There is no reason for it to use different classloaders depending on
whether security is on (classloader returned by
  Thread.currentThread().getContextClassLoader()) or off (parent
  classloader).

I think we have been using different classloaders for historical
reasons, because JspC.java didn't use to set thread context
classloader until the fix for Bugzilla 20155 required it to do so.

Instead, we should use parent classloader consistently, which always
corresponds to the URLClassLoader with access to WEB-INF/lib[classes]:

  1. In JspC.java, we construct URLClassLoader and set it as the parent
 of JasperLoader.

  2. When invoked from JspServlet, we acquire the context classloader
(which corresponds to WebappClassLoader) inside the constructor of
JspRuntimeContext (no need for doing this inside a privileged block
there) and set it as the parent of JasperLoader.

Ran all TCKs and jsp-examples with and without security enabled.
Let me know if you see anything wrong.

TCKs for 5.5.9

2005-03-29 Thread Yoav Shapira
Hi,

Can the wizards and magicians with access to the Servlet/JSP TCKs please run
them on Tomcat v5.5.9? I have hopes for making it a stable build. Thanks,

http://issues.apache.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=34227

Summary: Simultanenous HttpRequests with shared HttpSession can
leave it unable to timeout
   Product: Tomcat 5
   Version: 5.0.28
  Platform: All
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
  Severity: normal
  Priority: P2
 Component: Catalina
AssignedTo: tomcat-dev@jakarta.apache.org
ReportedBy: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

In the course of testing our web application have determined a race condition
exists when simultaneous requests come in to tomcat sharing a session.

The results are that a session will never timeout.

Looking into the code and adding log entries, basically the StandardSession
mantains an access count to determine how many threads are using the session at
once. The counter is incremented at the beginning of the request and
decremented
during the recyle at the end if the session object is not null. The race
condition must be that the shared session object becomes unavailable to recyle
and therefore is left with a positive access count.

The session monitor thread (in the StandardManager) uses the isValid to expire
timed out sessions. But when a positive access count remains the session is
always valid and therefore will never expire.

We've also confirmed this behavior on 5.5.8.

To see this effect, write a HttpSessionListener object for the web application
and monitor session creation and destruction with a counter and using jmeter
have a web page that has 2 javascript include tags calling each a servlet that
uses the session for processing. Run up the jmeter on the server and then note
the number of sessions that never expire, even though you can print out last
access times that are far into the past. This is easier to see right away if
you
set session timeout to something low like a couple of minutes.

If I get a chance to put more time into this I will followup with more and
possibly have test files and scripts to highlight this.

There are 70 committers, and it's a holiday weekend (4 day weekend in

It appears making StandardSession.endAccess() and StandardSession.access()
synchronized would do the trick.

The fix for bug 28147 changed one of the 3 instances identified in the patch
above to use getAbsoluteXXX() instead of getCanonicalXXX(). I see no reason why
this should be OK for one instance and not the other two so I have ported the
28147 patch from TC5 and replaced the other two instances as well.

We're obviously not going to sync that (which exists due to some fairly stupid

this issue.

Yeah, well, regardless of the description, it's obvious from looking at the
StandardSession code that the accessCount handling can't possibly work without
a synchronized block or something like j.u.concurrent.atomic.

Try a web page that has 2 javascript src tags each calling a servlet from the
same web application container. The browser will hand that off to background
threads (same ones used to download images) and bingo simultaneous servlet
requests with same JSESSIONID cookie. So while yes its rather difficult for a
user to pull off simultaneous requests on the same session a browser
application
has no such problem. You could probably see this one happen with a frame page
with a servlet in each frame being called simultaneously as well, and multiple
image generating servlets on a web page customizing output based on session. So
I see more than one valid scenario for this.
