Re: [Trisquel-users] Will Abrowser get phased out by IceCat eventually?
They might mean the program is not in the repositories for Debian or Ubuntu. You can download and compile or run the prepackages version, but there are no .deb versions etc... Only trying mind read, but thats my guess. I think Fedora has it in their yum package manager or as a .rpm, so Blag would have it. Not sure about the others, but I know (as ex Debian testing user) that Debian does not have it.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Will Abrowser get phased out by IceCat eventually?
if you want to install the package its apt-get install the command i posted downloads the .deb file so you could use that in debian with dpkg -i icecat.deb

Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 7 and two floppy drives: 2-1/2 and 5-1/4
My DisplayWrite 3 disks came to me about 1985 with a PCXT; they're definitely 360KB. They're double-sided; I never had a PC with the higher-capacity drives that I can remember. There's so little memory on a PCXT that I cannot imagine a Trisquel installation running on one. If there is such an animal, I still have that PCXT ... The main improvement nowadays is that we've gotten past those awful dot-matrix printers.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Call to Japan - I need your help!!
You do know that a server is just a program running on a computer, right? If you've ever played Freeciv, that uses a server-client model; any time you start even a single-player game, a server is started for the client to connect to locally. The only real limiting factors in hosting a server are your connection speed, your router (port-forwarding), and ISPs blocking ports. There's no special hardware requirement. If anything, the hardware requirements for server software are typically far less than those of common desktop applications. You can also get around having a dynamic IP address by using a service like No-IP.com.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Will Abrowser get phased out by IceCat eventually?
ESR is great for programs that want stability over latest and greatest, similar to LTS with Ubuntu, or stable with Debian, LTS with Trisquel etc... Schools, businesses etc..., are better served with ESR, also think ESR is a better choice for Trisquel so Ruben does not have to spend so much time with the browser, smaller changes and security updates rather than dramatic changes to the look and engine.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Freedom friendly wifi router
If the router can be flashed with free firmware and works with LibreCMC's libre kernel, embedded software, and web interface, then what is the problem as long as it all plays nice and the hardware?
Re: [Trisquel-users] problems compiling from source
you need install Bison if dont work install old bison
Re: [Trisquel-users] Freedom friendly wifi router
Either way, Think Penguin sells you a router that respects your freedom; that router probably doesn't. According to http://librecmc.org/librecmc/wiki?name=TL-WR841ND, the WR841ND DOES respect your freedom when using the LibreCMC firmware and is a fraction of the cost of the Think Penguin one. Why would I take your word over the official LibreCMC site?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Freedom friendly wifi router
I'm just repeating what Chris said back when Think Penguin's router was actually based on this one (a couple months ago, I think). I don't see anything on that page even remotely resembling a promise that the router you linked to respects your freedom. It just says that LibreCMC works on two versions of it. In any case, it's true that some of these routers respect your freedom, but all of Think Penguin's routers respect your freedom.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Will Abrowser get phased out by IceCat eventually?
there are deb versions: sudo apt-get download icecat
Re: [Trisquel-users] Freedom friendly wifi router
Are you even reading my posts? I never said it wasn't OK, I said that not all of them are OK. It's OK if you do get the right version. That's why Think Penguin used to base its router on the one that respects your freedom. This is not all that complex.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Call to Japan - I need your help!!
I know what a server is ;) I assumed that you have to install those apps on a running _webserver_ and that's what i didn't want to do if i can avoid it. And yeah, i was mainly thinking about speed and connectivity.. i just checked my upload and it's about 800 kbit/sec, so the resulting video quality would equal a one minute video at the size of 6 meg; at that point i concluded that i can forget about this approach, but then i realized that something has to be wrong here. I mean, the video i record _has_ to get uploaded anyway and since i already did a video chat, it somehow has to work. So actually when it comes to band with, it's no different from using an xmpp server: my video data has to get uploaded and i have to download the incoming stream. Only difference is that i'm sending directly to my conversation partner and not to some server. But i'm sitting behind a router so i don't know if it will work out.. maybe i give it a try.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Claws-Mail setup
+1 for you...Perhaps in 20 years people will only say GNU and wonder what Linux is/was...LOL. This would be especially true if GNU/Hurd is ever universally adopted.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Will Abrowser get phased out by IceCat eventually?
For Debian? If you search their repository you get: You have searched for packages that names contain icecat in suite(s) stable, all sections, and all architectures. Sorry, your search gave no results and the same for testing. Isn't the command, apt-get install..., unless you meant aptitude download?

Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 7 and two floppy drives: 2-1/2 and 5-1/4
I still had one running last year. What a nightmare had to use printer buffers so the computer would not freeze. Not to mention paper costs. It came on a single sheet, 500 pages(A5) long perforated on both sides and it still managed to jam. Hey, any luck with formatting/opening/writing ?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Will Abrowser get phased out by IceCat eventually?
It would be nice if Ruben's IceCat versions are pushed upstream into Debian/Ubuntu as well all users will benefit from this alternative browser. IceCat is free software so Debian and Ubuntu can use it already if they want. I don't know what you mean by “pushing” in this context (I know what it means in distributed version control systems).
Re: [Trisquel-users] rmdir unable to remove directory than is 0wned by me and has me as group
It depends on the parent directory, in this case it is /usr/share . If this parent directory does not give you write permission, you won't be able to remove/edit/create files within this directory. When you want to write outside of the /home/$USER/ directory with one of the Desktop users it is a better idea to get a directory that is owned by you first, let's say /user/share/test and then write within that directory. You shouldn't be really creating files that are owned by anyone other than root in these places (unless it has a specific purpose, like file sharing). To understand this better you really have to read about linux permissions. It is also not a good idea to fiddle with the permissions on files owned by root unless you know what you are doing or it's just a testing environment.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 7 and two floppy drives: 2-1/2 and 5-1/4
I tried replacing the first floppy drive with another spare, and I still get this with dmesg | tail: end_request: I/O error dev fd0, sector 0 Trisquel calls this floppy drive a 1.44M device also ... I'm out-voted. Same result with a different floppy disk, ca. 1992. The drive spins up as soon as I insert a floppy disk; no magic smoke has been lost. Automount and manual mounting gives a result to the effect that the device is write-protected (when it's not) Poking around the 'net, I found what was 'sposed to be the magic command: sudo udisks --mount /dev/fd0 To which I received the result to the effect that the device did not respond ... or that there was something wrong with the network ... cat /etc/fstab says: /dev/fd0 /media/floppy0 auto rw,user,noauto,exec,utf8 0 0 After trying all these, the dmesg | tail ends with: end_request: I/O error dev fd0, sector 0
Re: [Trisquel-users] Tweaks to optimize user friendliness
HuangLao, did you actually get JWM to work on Belenos? I tried and tried on Toutatis and finally gave up and decided that Flux would have to be good enough. I will be so grateful to you if you did and can give me any tips as far as workarounds to make it look like Damn Small Linux did circa 2005ish. My current minimalist box is a command line only Asus Eee PC 700 series with a 2 gig ssd that I picked up for $25, but my next project will have a much slower processor and some sort of minimal GUI and probably be more along the lines of retro fun than anything that can or should connect to the internet on a regular basis. OP, sometimes family dynamics get in the way of newbie friendliness. I've had to accept that about my mother and just hope that I can return the favour when her 13 year old tech support dude's mother needs some tech support. :P I personally found Damn Small Linux much easier to learn than Mandrake, which was considered the ultimate user-friendly newbie distro of the day. One size definitely doesn't fit all.

About Trisquel's view of the floppy: The OS says 1.44MB, but it's really 360KB. I'll go find another 5-1/4 inch floppy drive, just in case this one's defective or just plain tired. Almost all the floppies I've saved have data on them, but there must be blanks somewhere in the various totes. The one I tried was an IBM disk for DisplayWrite 6, a precious one indeed.

Here's a nice size to capacity table with the year they were introduced in: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Floppy_disk#Sizes.2C_performance_and_capacity 1.44MB sounds more likely. I was handed a few dozens of these, when I replaced a point of sale computer at an Hotel. Those make for nice cup bases nowadays.

I started to refer to gnu/linux using the word gnu ! It is 90% correct, it's just 3 letters so lazy typists are well suited, and it seems fair to exclude a little the kernel - open source world has been ignoring gnu for 20 years so it seems right to me to return the favor!
Re: [Trisquel-users] installing libreboot on a x60 thinkpad
Just a note of experience from this long-time (three weeks) Trisquel user: Make a bootable flash drive (I used an 8GB one) and load Trisquel's iso with the nice usb-flashdrive installer. Add as many applications with the software installer as you like, being sure to check how much free space remains on the flash drive, and give it a try. You can re-install Trisquel and a few less applications if you brick the flashdrive ... I did that about three times. Unless you set out to do so deliberately, there's not much you can do to the candidate laptop except running GParted on the laptop's hard drive accidentally. Or accidentally hitting the install button during bootup - you can even cancel that if you're paying attention. You can run the laptop from the Trisquel flash drive as long as you like; it boots up quickly and gives the laptop full functionality without resorting to any portion of the laptop's original operating system. You can even mount, read write to the laptop's hard drive, so long as there is room on it. All files on the laptop are accessible as well (I dunno about password protections on that laptop's files, however - but my own laptop has not rejected access to my data files when running Trisquel from the flashdrive).
