[Trisquel-users] simple and powerful software for scrapbook
Have you ever scrapbooked your kid's childhood? My child's birthday is coming soon. I want to give him a special gift . So I'm going to do a child's scrapbook to record his bit . Do you have some suggestion about the scrapbook ? Or can you recommend some simple and powerful software for me ? Thanks in advance .
Re: [Trisquel-users] simple and powerful software for scrapbook
Perhaps Inkscape or Scribus could be used, both are available in the repos.
Re: [Trisquel-users] anyone using Trisquel for music production?
hi, thanks for the reply! I would be interested in mirror. What soundcard are you using? When i bought my computer i made sure to be able to run free software, installed Trisquel, Jack and probably some some more but i never got my soundcard(Echo Audiofire12) running so i tried KXStudio and it worked OOTB. Because of a new grafics card i had to update my system and my sound is not working anymore. So now, i might as well try again and get it working under Trisquel...
Re: [Trisquel-users] Partition table suggested for installing three GNU/Linux systems
:) For solid state it should not matter. On the spinning disk I guess it depends on your usage pattern. Do you share partitions? Is the data of the most frequently used distro more important than the root of the least used distro? Do you hibernate? /boot is kinda tricky, if you hibernate often, you might not need a separate /boot on the faster part of the disk. And then it might make sense to put swap before your data. On the other hand if you don't hibernate a separate /boot might be a good idea and the otherwise rarely used swap probably could be at the end. Also if you wish to go partition crazy you could have a lot of partitions with different cluster size, file systems and file system mount options. And then it needs to be taken to account that many read/write operations are not sequential but random. (And beyond partitioning, there is RAID... ) Basically what you've been doing sounds good, root before data. If you really care, then you need to start measuring performance. It's an interesting subject and I'll be glad to learn more about it.
Re: [Trisquel-users] booting to console (no X)
follow this: -Stopping lightdm on tty (Ctrl+Alt+F1...) sudo /etc/init.d/lightdm stop (or other DE). Use -f if this not work -Edit /etc/default/grub sudo nano /etc/default/grub Modify quiet splash in text for boot from console Edit this line: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=quiet splash in this: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=text -If you don't want grub timeout edit this line: GRUB_TIMEOUT=5 in this: GRUB_TIMEOUT=0 Then Update Grub update-grub Remove lightdm during boot update-rc.d -f lightdm remove (-f for forcing) Then reboot: sudo reboot For start lightdm from console sudo /etc/init.d/lightdm start I use this method on my computers (remember that admin rights are required) I hope I have helped you
Re: [Trisquel-users] anyone using Trisquel for music production?
I suggest you guys musicians or music workers or music aficionados or..well I think you get the point..give a try to http://gnuetertics.org/article/getv5-xfce4/ It's a 100% not yet fsf approved libre distro for libre radios made in and for the south American libre radio communities. It has all the software a musician needs. Been running it as a live distro from a USB key - it is an amazing distro! based on debian 7.8 with mate and xfce DEs. I love xfce and this distro looks really good and it is very smooth in live mode.
Re: [Trisquel-users] anyone using Trisquel for music production?
Hi, I do use Trisquel for audio production. I only installed a few software from the official repos (ardour, qjackctl, mixxx, lmms, audacity, zynaddsubfx,...) and it's sufficient for me. With another french member of trisquel community we made this small wiki page (in french) about improving trisquel's performance for audio production. http://trisquel.info/en/user/login?destination=node%2F14254%23comment-form Feel free to comment it. The wiki page contains an all in one command to install a large amount of audio software from the repos and some indications to handle cpu frequency (thanks to Dogers). The link to linux-libre-rt is old (looks like it's not maintained), but you can keep the low-latency core as it is very sufficient for a daily use.
Re: [Trisquel-users] via manufacturer emails on entirely free software mainboard
There is a corollary to this problem: obsolete hardware such as floppy disks software like KompoZer, both of which I faced on this forum, and with considerable success. Once equipped, these devices can work just about forever for those who need them. KompoZer works better for me than the Composer that (used to be ?) bundled with Firefox. And I can read nearly all of my twenty-to-thirty-year-old 5-1/4 inch floppy disks; that medium has much longer storage life than most folks will admit. Also, it seems that we can use just about any video engine, so long as it's got an Intel chipset ... which cuts out most modern hardware. I'm finding motherboards with such chipsets increasingly difficult to find. The ones I've found work OK for a game unenthusiast. And there aren't _any_ video cards with Intel chips ... correct me, please, if I am wrong about this. As to tonlee's quest: Don't Lenovo's motherboards count ? My T420 works fine with ThinkPenguin's WiFi adapter that bypasses the on-board proprietary wireless hardware.

Re: [Trisquel-users] The end of YouTube API v2
I went to compile the latest version of minitube. It now needs a google api key for which I would need to signup a google account!!!?? wtf? Is there a workaround for this?
Re: [Trisquel-users] anyone using Trisquel for music production?
That's great! If you need storage space for the mirror let me know. I got some gigabytes spare and free traffic...
Re: [Trisquel-users] Partition table suggested for installing three GNU/Linux systems
Thanks again. I did the tests you suggested me on your first post. Mine is spinning disc. It's an interesting subject and I'll be glad to learn more about it. Yes, it is. Do you share partitions? Yes Is the data of the most frequently used distro more important than the root of the least used distro? No Do you hibernate? No I'm only a normal user who want do the things in a reasonably way, following some basic technical criteria :D
[Trisquel-users] will there be an updated 6.0 iso ?
Hi ! just wanted to know whether there are any plans for an updated 6.0 iso ? After all it does have another 2 years to go :) I'm asking because should I need to reinstall trisquel 6, then it would be nice, rather than having to be forced into installing 7 ! thanks
Re: [Trisquel-users] The end of YouTube API v2
i dont understand why minitube has this problem when xbmc runs everything fine in HD? why do all the other programs not just copy this?: https://github.com/HenrikDK/youtube-xbmc-plugin/blob/master/plugin/YouTubePlayer.py
Re: [Trisquel-users] The end of YouTube API v2
In the abrowser source package, there is a file debian/g. I think it contains a google api key.
Re: [Trisquel-users] will there be an updated 6.0 iso ?
Trisquel 7 isn't a problem as such, just don't need electrum wallet and tor running, just got Trisquel 6 a bit too clutterd and wanted to do a re-install of it, but don't fancy having over one year of updates - that's all.
Re: [Trisquel-users] will there be an updated 6.0 iso ?
I'm running Trisquel 7 and I just discovered the tor process. However, I couldn't find any electrum wallet. Why should there be a Bitcoin wallet running by default? Concerning your original question I don't know too much and I highly doubt that there will be an updated version for Trisquel 6.
Re: [Trisquel-users] will there be an updated 6.0 iso ?
What's the problem with Trisquel 7?
[Trisquel-users] tor process
Hello there, I just noticed that there is a process tor running in the background even though I never installed tor. Does this now come by default with abrowser? How can I disable tor? Thanks a lot for your answers.
Re: [Trisquel-users] tor process
there was a lengthy discussion here: http://trisquel.info/en/forum/tor-browsing-trisquel-7-bad-idea
Re: [Trisquel-users] tor process
There is an add-on called Private Tor browsing but it has been disabled already. Strangely, I still have a tor process running in the background.
[Trisquel-users] Re : RV730 PRO [Radeon HD 4650] Woes
then rebooted and was right back into the 3.13 kernel with fat resolution. It may be that the last kernel that was used was not saved (since your GRUB was not configured in this way) and, when rebooting for the first time after the reconfiguration, GRUB chose the latest kernel, i.e., one more reboot where you would have chosen the 3.10 kernel and everything would have been OK afterwards. It is just a guess though. Since I have Fedora 21 and Centos 7 installed on the hard drive also, could I do grub-update while in either of those to have that grub would handle bootups after that? The configuration in the file /etc/default/grub of the system at work would then be used. A more important question might be is grub needed in each OS? You have one single bootloader for the whole computer. It usually is in the MBR of the disk.
Re: [Trisquel-users] The end of YouTube API v2
you can use youtube-dl to bypass this
Re: [Trisquel-users] The end of YouTube API v2
XBMC's youtube plugin dosent work WHY!! oh well ill have to use viewtube...
Re: [Trisquel-users] booting to console (no X)
cantor, you ask do you have done all of this only on TTY? If you mean, did I perform the attempts that I listed by issuing the commands in a text terminal, I think the answer is yes. I used F1, logged in and did the things with sudo. I have tried one more thing: sudo mv /etc/init.d/lightdm /etc/lightdm and re-boot. No difference. So during boot it seems to be finding out how to start lightdm from some other source.
Re: [Trisquel-users] booting to console (no X)
Thank you for informing me Lembas ;)
Re: [Trisquel-users] Share your Desktop!
Just the default with web server home page and household wiki.
Re: [Trisquel-users] tor process
You could stop it from running by changing S20tor to K20tor in /etc/rc2.d through /etc/rc.5 $ ls /etc/rc2.d README S20hddtemp S20speech-dispatcherS70pppd-dns S16openvpn S20postfix S20tor S91apache2 S19mysql S20rsync S25mdadmS99ondemand S20clamav-freshclam S20screen-cleanup S37iptables-persistent S99rc.local $ sudo mv /etc/rc2.d/S20tor /etc/rc2.d/K20tor and repeat for /etc/rc.3.d and so forth. On mine rc0.d, rc1.d and rc6.d all have the Kill tor K20tor but run levels 3 through 5 have the start flag S20tor. If you make them all K20tor and reboot it shouldn't start. This is an easier way. ...I ran this on mine $ sudo update-rc.d tor disable [sudo] password for geshmy: update-rc.d: warning: start runlevel arguments (none) do not match tor Default-Start values (2 3 4 5) update-rc.d: warning: stop runlevel arguments (none) do not match tor Default-Stop values (0 1 6) Disabling system startup links for /etc/init.d/tor ... Removing any system startup links for /etc/init.d/tor ... /etc/rc0.d/K20tor /etc/rc1.d/K20tor /etc/rc2.d/S20tor /etc/rc3.d/S20tor /etc/rc4.d/S20tor /etc/rc5.d/S20tor /etc/rc6.d/K20tor Adding system startup for /etc/init.d/tor ... /etc/rc0.d/K20tor - ../init.d/tor /etc/rc1.d/K20tor - ../init.d/tor /etc/rc6.d/K20tor - ../init.d/tor /etc/rc2.d/K80tor - ../init.d/tor /etc/rc3.d/K80tor - ../init.d/tor /etc/rc4.d/K80tor - ../init.d/tor /etc/rc5.d/K80tor - ../init.d/tor and then $ sudo update-rc.d tor enable starts it back up.
Re: [Trisquel-users] will there be an updated 6.0 iso ?
What is wrong with electrum? It is only a bitcoin wallet. It's not like it needs a process always running on your computer and listening to some port!? How difficult it is to run in terminal apt-get remove --purge tor electrum?? I really don't get you..
Re: [Trisquel-users] The end of YouTube API v2
And..no minitube and no smtube works right now! stupid api! Just an empty list. no vids at all. no one vid. :( ay ay ay Need to solve this!
Re: [Trisquel-users] tor process
sudo apt-get remove --purge tor
Re: [Trisquel-users] booting to console (no X)
It's good you didn't recommend doing that using bashrc because then every time one would open a terminal window (defaults to using bash) X server would get killed. It would work though if one used /etc/rc.local (that file is run with sh -e so it will not work if there is slightest mistake in it)
Re: [Trisquel-users] booting to console (no X)
strange... do you have done all of this only on TTY? (I ask you for be sure) when you log into GUI, choose session quit and try again on tty, then reboot (I have 3 computers and works) Do you tried with sudo poweroff instead of reboot? Maybe the problem is not this, (I'm not expert). Do you have other de? Maybe lightdm is not setted as default desktop manager [I'm NOT sure of this, I NOT recommend you] If all of this not work, you can try to edit .bashrc and add the commands that remove or stop lightdm on boot (I solved the blanking screen with this method), or trying in /etc/issue, but I think there are solutions more elegant than these eheh
Re: [Trisquel-users] The end of YouTube API v2
Thanks. I've been already using ViewTube browser scripts, smtube (updated via PPA repository) and youtube-dl to partially work for me, but that's the same problem for using an outdated API.
Re: [Trisquel-users] The end of YouTube API v2
So, here's the worst part you can't watch, listen or download some music and videos from YouTube, because there are common reasons of age verification, copyright restrictions, country restrictions and any others.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Partition table suggested for installing three GNU/Linux systems
I've been thinking about this too. I had Centos and Fedora installed and had given them the lion share of a 1 TB hd. Then I found Trisquel and gave it the rest (about 130 GB). Now I'm thinking to start over. I like Trisquel 7 very much and would use it by default most of the time. I might do Fedora 22 and get the latest kernel. I was thinking about preparing/reserving a portion of the hd to build a kernel on my own and see how far I can get building everything from source. I could leave a portion for a fourth option (maybe freebsd or openbsd). I was thinking I would have a large /home partition and back it up on to an external hd. I've never used back up software but I would like to create something more permanent and secure than I usually do and locate all the data that I want to keep from all the computers I have scattered around the house and have it in one place backed up to the ext hd. Question 1 Is this still relevant: https://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/securing-debian-howto/ch3.en.html#s3.2 Since I installed trisquel I have mostly installed the major apps that I wanted and been tweaking so by now it appears that I have used up a quarter of my 20 GB / directory and maybe less than 1 GB of my 108 GB /home partition. I have 4 GB swap for 8 GB Ram and I have yet to see a swap file be used (I think ever on any machine.) The stuff I do is not that intensive but I would like to start gaming a little, So if I reformat and reinstall maybe Trisquel 10 GB / LVM 10 GB /usr .xfs, ext3, ext4? 10 GB /var . 2 GB /tmp .. 5 GB /opt .. 8 GB swap ...swap -- 45 GB total OS 2 (same pattern) 10 GB / 10 GB /usr 10 GB /var 2 GB /tmp 5 GB /opt 8 GB swap (if it will let me, Grub in Centos or Fedora found the swap from the other an insisted on using that on the second install) --- 45 GB total 500 GB /home mounted in both OSes - to be backed up to the external hd This way I am using less that 50 GB for each OS and can play with around 400 GB left over. If the debian doc isn't relevant then KISS maybe rules and just go 35 GB / and 8 GB swap. Other Questions: Does gaming create need for a bigger swap? Anything else I should know or consider?
[Trisquel-users] Re : anyone using Trisquel for music production?
The Free Software Foundation recommends Musix GNU+Linux, which is actively developed: https://musixdistro.wordpress.com
[Trisquel-users] Re : tor process
Do you really use Abrowser and not Icecat? I do not have Icecat installed and I still have trisquel and trisquel-recommended with all their dependencies. Yet: $ ps -e | grep -i tor 5026 ?00:00:00 indicator-bluet 5034 ?00:00:00 indicator-power
Re: [Trisquel-users] RV730 PRO [Radeon HD 4650] Woes
cool, thanks for clarification.
[Trisquel-users] Re : will there be an updated 6.0 iso ?
There is no Bitcoin wallet running by default but there is a Bitcoin wallet installed by default in the GNOME edition (not in Trisquel Mini and, obviously, not in the Netinstall). Because it does not run unless you launch it, that Bitcoin wallet only takes space on the disk, not in the RAM. 1142 kB (basically nothing) on the disk to be precise.
[Trisquel-users] Re : booting to console (no X)
So during boot it seems to be finding out how to start lightdm from some other source. The init executes /usr/sbin/lightdm.
[Trisquel-users] Re : RV730 PRO [Radeon HD 4650] Woes
I didn't think to try rebooting twice. Rebooting once, but manually choosing version 3.10 this one time, would have been enough if I guessed right (what is not sure at all). So, are you saying that that command writes over previous contents in the MBR so for instance if in Fedora right now I did $ sudo update-grub, it would write over the Trisquel grub-update result I'm using now? As far as I understand (but I am no expert and exclusively run Trisquel): yes. And is it possible to install two OSes without bootloaders and depend on a third with grub to do the os-probe and be able to configure boot up options for all three? I am not sure you can install an OS and not install a bootloader with it. As far as I remember (that was more than 10 years ago), installing Windows XP after GNU/Linux was deleting GRUB... and Windows' bootloader, which you never see, only boots Windows. At least, that is what I understood. But, again, I am no expert.
[Trisquel-users] Re : Partition table suggested for installing three GNU/Linux systems
Does gaming create need for a bigger swap? The swap is an extension of the RAM onto the disk, whose throughput is something like 100 times smaller. When the RAM is full and the system swaps, it is unbearably slow. As a consequence, the size of the swap for gaming is irrelevant because you will not play on a system that swaps. You need enough RAM for the game. Since you are talking about desktop usages and since you never hibernate, the swap needs not be large (1 or 2 GB maybe) because a desktop system that is swapping is a pain to use. You had better have a swap though. In this way, once the main memory is full, the system swaps, you feel it, and you can close some applications/tabs. Without a swap, the kernel would kill some process to free some space. That is why the swap is essential on servers. Anything else I should know or consider? Having many partitions has a significant drawback: any of those partitions can be full if it turns out to be under-dimensioned. For instance 2 GB for /tmp would prevent you from using Popcorn Time. On the contrary, over-dimensioned partitions are a waste of space. For instance 10 GB for /var looks huge (I currently have 1.1 GB of files in /var). If you use LVM, you can quite easily (after learning how to use LVM...) resize your partitions. Without LVM, it is a pain to resize the partitions without losing their files. Notice that some filesystems (I am looking at you XFS) cannot be shrunk.
Re: [Trisquel-users] tor process
Looks like it's using the Torbutton, should be able to disable it under add-ons ? Not sure...
Re: [Trisquel-users] booting to console (no X)
Thanks for the suggestions, cantor here's my results: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=quiet splash to this: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=text and do 'sudo update-grub' and reboot: NO effect. it still starts lightdm when I boot. In /etc/init.d/lightdm, change Default-Start from '2 3 4 5' to '3 4 5' No effect. sudo update-rc.d -f lightdm remove and re-boot. No effect. It starts lightdm. Log in on F1 and do sudo /etc/init.d/lightdm stop That works, clearing the F7 screen and removing the lightdm processes. I suppose I'll have to live with this although it's a nuisance. Starting lightdm is also a nuisance: in a text terminal, do sudo /etc/init.d/lightdm start It starts lightdm and that presents the login screen. When I log in it flips back to the text terminal and I have to do F7 to get back to the GUI.
Re: [Trisquel-users] tor process
Thanks a lot. I seem to have kinda missed that discussion. As I don't want to search the whole thread for this information: How can I disable tor?
Re: [Trisquel-users] anyone using Trisquel for music production?
Hi Supertramp, i not after more or other software really, i run Ardour and Musescore and might try a drummachine later, it is more about getting things working. Actually the only problem is my soundcard.
Re: [Trisquel-users] will there be an updated 6.0 iso ?
There is a 6.0.1. I guess a good way would be netinstall to avoid downloading out of date packages. Here you can find the ISOs, checksums, Transport armor files and the GPG key. http://cdimage.trisquel.info/trisquel-images/ https://trisquel.info/files/trisquel-archive-signkey.gpg
Re: [Trisquel-users] tor process
Hum... unfortunately torbutton is not installed on my machine. Thus, I can't disable it. ;-)
Re: [Trisquel-users] will there be an updated 6.0 iso ?
ok ! thanks for all the answers, I'll try the netinstall :)
Re: [Trisquel-users] tor process
strange tor is normally symbolized by a little green onion in the systray or browser, if that shows you could click on it for 'options', otherwise I don't know, sorry...
