Alternatively you could just buy a Libreboot X200 with 12 display, 8 GB of
RAM, and a 120 GB SSD for around $600.
I don't think the system is low on memory; This is the present state of my
memory.
That's your hard disk space. The fact you don't have swap means you're more
likely having to deal with the oom killer. This seems like a decent overview
of the beast
Older Thinkpads like the ones from Gluglug are old hardware but you can turn
them in a quite capable laptop fairly easily if you're not afraid to turn a
screwdriver. Consider for example (I'm not sure where you are, I'm in the US
so I'm looking at US prices, YMMV):

Happened to me a few days ago. I use mirror.fsf.org. I must have caught the
server half-way through synchronising or something, because half an hour later,
the files were there.
Just give it a wait.
I use an ASUS N43SL, and, despite having bought it before I was
freedom-conscious, it works perfectly with free software. Unfortunately, it has
a proprietary BIOS- I plan to buy a Libreboot X200 when this machine finally
dies (had it for about 5 years).
Speaking of which, the Thinkpad X200 and

Update: Gluglug no longer sell the T60 and the X60. They have been replaced by
an upgraded X200.
Errr.that, on a laptop?
For sure, that is definitely a good way to go.
Okay. Thank you. :) I will definitely be using this for fully wiping all my
HDD's.
'shred' is the best solution. It writes random data instead of zeros. By
only writing zeros (as in 'dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sda'), expensive
equipments
can still recover some data (because writing a zero on top of a zero leads
to a magnetic state that is closer to zero than writing zero on

Hi,
after skimming through the highlights of a talk by Eben Moglen (shared by
jxself I think),
I felt in love with the idea of small servers (the size of a phone charger or
so) that's secure and easy to setup/use.
I've seen people around the web experimenting with BeagleBoneBlack (which is
Possible additional services worth installing besides a mail server (while

The gentleman who answered my mail told me that he informed the guy
responsible of the mail list and that they should update the website to
include several new services (rugged included hopefully).
A person in irc room said she deleted the profile folder removed abrowser and
reinstalled and has same issues even on safe mode.
Not sure why, only diff she was on KDE, i'm on the default gnome desktop
maybe? don't know why that would make a diff though.
I will do a three pass wipe with shred then. :D
I am shredding my HDD now. Thanks guys. That was so easy. :D
Perhaps a MediaGoblin instance?
Ok now I want to try that even more ! Great suggestions, thanks !
The Libreboot project have plans to Libreboot the beagle bone black.

These are very good points guys, I will certainly look into the available
systems, and keep a close eye on the technology. At this point I have the
option of keeping my current device and working through the issues, or moving
to one of the suggested devices. I will have a think about what is
The info here is fascinating. For someone with a technical background, albeit
not in I.T, I find the challenges posed by migrating to free software a real
brain teaser. I like that.
Perhaps by learning to write software and becoming proficient I can provide

I'm on Iceweasel and icecat and thankfully don't have this reader or
several other bloatware entries in my about:config :)
I have been trying to find the repo for IceCat, is it still unavailable? Also
I tried installing from source but kept getting error after error. As of this
moment is there any easy way to install? I have heard a lot of hype for this
browser, but everyone seems to be having issues installing.

I have changed the link for IceCat being default to Abrowser.
Hi my first post!
I am trying various linux distros and configurations, and I'm currently
trying Trisquel mini. I will post separately about larger issues, and what
I'm really looking for, but for this topic I thought I would stick to issues
I experienced with Tmini.
I have only tried
I put a couple of shortcuts on the bottom bar of the desktop, but can't seem
to find the remove option. I have also tried dragging off and into trash.
Is this a current bug?
hold down alt and left click on the icon you want to remove
you can then move or delete the icon
I am experiencing the same issue with abrowser 39. Thanks for reporting the
bug.
I'd already tried installing MATE with my trisquel mini install and although
it basically worked I suspect there may be a few conflicts.
Theres also the issue of clutter with multiple desktop environments as each
installs its own version of essential uitilities. Is there a way to
I'd like some input and overview from those who know the state of GNU/Linux
better than me.
This is a long explanation, but I think it is probably needed if I am to get
genuinely useful advice.
As my username suggests, I am a long time Mac user (since 1988). Whilst I've

another minor annoyance with trisquell mini, when inserting a usb stick a
dialog comes up asking me what to do, i couldn't find a way to set a
preference and then not have the dialog pop up every time.
what are you referring to here?
add-on site for the Web browser
I'm downloading trisquel mini now to test it out, but doesn't lxde come with
pcmanfm? From within there should be an option to stop that. This happens
on all distros not just trisquel mini, and a good idea to shut off if just
for security reasons. Also turn off thumbnails.

Just install Trisquel in its GNOME (Flashback) edition. It has many graphical
utilities. You can then install MATE as an alternative desktop:
https://trisquel.info/en/wiki/installing-mate
Compared to Mint, Trisquel gives you freedom. As long as you stick to
Trisquel's repository (and
XFCE is a lightweight desktop, that is not really lightweight. LXDE is
truly lightweight and meant for old computers and tablets.
I would recommend you install the standard ISO with Gnome-fallback for your
system. If you really want mate you can install it, many trisquel users
use
Is syanptic not loading from menu the only error? I find synaptic more
complicated and dangerous then using apt-get so I never use it.
Mint is really the only distro with a real working usb boot creator I've
found. Ubuntu's has the same problems and Fedora gave up on theirs years
ago...
Welcome to the free world! If you have older macbooks (2006-2007), please
note that you can free your BIOS as well: http://libreboot.org/
The Trisquel website pronounces that IceCat is installed by default, but it
isn't.
Where did you read that?

* yes GNU/linux, I know I just forgot/mistyped.
* yes I updated from the terminal as you suggest but it only fixed the
software updater gui.
* Freenetbootin looks challenging to install for my current level of
knowledge. I'm not averse to compiling things, i just haven't had much
It is still a little buggy, I had to try several times for it to register to
put up the option to remove. But I was able to get it done. Thank you.
We have some documentation already: https://trisquel.info/en/wiki/all-manuals
You can feel free to start a guide and others can help :)
btw you should list all these bugs here:

so the developers can try to fix them

Oh, nevermind. I was able to click the link on the front page of Abrowser to
install icecat. Why have Abrowser at all? The Trisquel website pronounces
that IceCat is installed by default, but it isn't. Can someone shed some
light on this?
dd if=/dev/random of=/dev/sda
That would take ages. You probably meant 'dd if=/dev/urandom of=/dev/sda'.
One more character before random that makes much difference on the running
time! That latter command is indeed analog to 'shred -n 1 /dev/sda'.
I have a Beaglebone Black (BBB) and here is what I can tell you...
As you probably already know, the chip that handles HDMI output on that
computer requires a non-free driver... as far as I know that is the only part
of the board that requires non-free software to use. For server
I think this would be beneficial to those who are coming over to Trisquel.
Are there any projects trying to resolve this? If so, I would like to help.
I think mail and OpenVPN should be fine... looking at the Freedombone site
you linked to seems to confirm that as well. I don't know about any
self-hosted search engines except that I've heard of Yacy which seems cool
but I remember hearing an interview with the developer saying that they
Abrowser 39.0 on Trisquel 7 doesn't work at all. I tried launching it three
times and every time it shows the window that checks for add-on compatibility
then it crashes.
~$ abrowser
(process:6389): GLib-CRITICAL **: g_slice_set_config: assertion
'sys_page_size == 0' failed
That's great ! Thanks for the info !
At this point, the BBB would probably fry.
Thanks for the list of ideas.
There are so many cool stuff to host, I suppose we need to wait for a more
powerful machine, and still small enough to be easily moved. And Libreboot
friendly.
After all, it might be possible to have a very small

good point pizziolo, yes we do have one of those in the house and I am aware
of the possibility.

i actually had this with mini as well and it was fixed after the
So I just tried the trisquel mini. Your right the startupdisk creator was
usless for me and the 64 bit image. I coudln't even boot with it.
Unetbootin is the way to go, and I guess I shouldn't be surprised because
the ubuntu and fedora disk creators never worked for me either.

OK, i think i updated the kernel OK. It fixed my back light but i still have
crazy cpu use.
I thought gparted was already installed, easy enough to install.
I still don't know what you mean by disk manager? is pcman and gparted not
enough?
I didn't have that problem with synaptic, it loaded for me on the lxde iso.
Synaptic only asks me for a password when loading if I change
Thanks for the wifi tip, probably useful on the go (provided I secure it
properly). Otherwise, if it's mostly at home, I can plug it through ethernet
to my router I guess.
I'd definitely try to stay away from flash memory. I suppose I can install
the OS and the data on an external HDD.
I think the easiest way to install IceCat is using Synaptic Package Manager.
Search for icecat and you will find version 31.8.0-gnu1+7.0trisquel1 and
language packages.
I
have installed the full trisquel now so can't test mini, but i didnt
find gparted, from memory i had to install it.
there is a utility just called disks it is useful and in the system
settings of the full trisquel, it is in the repo and can be installed in
mini but is not there by default.
bizarre.have you tried to update the kernel?
https://trisquel.info/en/wiki/update-linux-libre-kernel
i don't understand what do to with the little bash function bit
i am running the first apt-get bit
when it overheats it looks like one processor is pegged at 100% and it
alternates which one at about 1 sec intervals, but maybe this is an artifact
of the sampling frequency
