Re: [Trisquel-users] Writing my ‘common distros’ for us in 2018
You look confused that, I actually stand for the Cambridge and Oxford dictionaries to be the tools used by my English teachers. In fact that you are unclear to what I'm saying is due to my few opportunities to write online or speak with the English-spoken tourists before high school. When I was at college the teachers dntv time to tutor in very many details.
[Trisquel-users] Welcome Hyperbola, another LTS libre system
https://wiki.parabola.nu/User:Hd_scania#systemd_removal_before_transfer_to_OpenRC_.28full_systemd_install.29 I have just cloned my Parabola system into another partition, for downgrading to Hyperbola, with kernel panic as final and only issue up to now, that Hyperbola is LTS like Trisquel unlike Parabola, but pacman as package manager like Parabola unlike Trisquel. After this clone before your downgrade, check and update the UUID in /etc/fstab of that partition you need to downgrade to Hyperbola according to gparted, after refreshing this UUID using tune2fs, and dnt touch one you need to remain it as Parabola.
Re: [Trisquel-users] How to spread computing freedom?
>She sometimes complain that I do not want to "help" her with "installing the Uber app" or "having WhatsApp (that she installed herself) put data on the SD card". I find it very annoying when they act like this, as if you were doing them a wrong by not wanting to install proprietary malware on their devices. Most people just don't want to understand and tend to maintain their point no matter what. I find their point as dumb as annoying: 'but it's muh device, it is muh bizness what I install and use'. No matter how many times you explain that 'installing proprietary software goes against your morals and integrity'. (Correct, what **you** install and use. So, either install it on ur own or quit annoying me)
Re: [Trisquel-users] Hot news - Major flaw in Intel CPUs
If I understand it correctly there are three vulnerabilities, two spectre and one meltdown bugs. Intel processors are affected by all of them and on all operating systems. AMD is affected by one spectre vulerability only on GNU/Linux and only if you use non-default kernel settings. Correct me if I am wrong.
Re: [Trisquel-users] RMS, the free software community and cognitive dissonance
> Nobody loads a file into a game in the way they commonly load files into > spreadsheets, word processors, and other similar programs for which work is > typically done. Games do load files, but I suppose you mean that you never transfer files for use with non-identical software, and therefore compatibility of the files they read and/or write with other similar programs is not an issue. I'd just like to point out that all of these kinds of programs are typically the same way: - Calculator applications - Clock/alarm applications - File managers - Terminal emulators - Device firmware - Device drivers I don't think compatibility, in any sense, is a particularly helpful criterion to look at when determining how good or bad a program being proprietary is.
Re: [Trisquel-users] GPS navigator with free software
If you have a device that can run Replicant with GPS, that would do the trick; you could use OsmAnd~, ZANavi, or Navit (all found in the F-Droid repo). But I don't think any Replicant-supporting phones support GPS with libre software, so that's partly just theoretical. A device with GNU/Linux like the Pyra should theoretically be fine, too, if you add GPS to it somehow. In that case I suppose you would use Navit.

I'll explain again: Nobody loads a file into a game in the way they commonly load files into spreadsheets, word processors, and other similar programs for which work is typically done. There are also other issues which I think I've explained clearly that are more likely to affect older software.

Re: [Trisquel-users] trouble with
If you want to test the upgrade process, try to remove plymouth-theme-trisquel-logo first. Because last time I tried it, it had been fixed in the beta image but not yet recompiled for the repos, so it will probably still break your upgrade process. I believe the insllation log should be in /var/log/installer/debug. If you find something outstanding, create a new issue or send it to the devel mailing list.
[Trisquel-users] Re : RMS, the free software community and cognitive dissonance
I have not understood a specific part of your post: what you meant by "games don't typically require the degree of compatibility other software requires". That is why I quoted that small excerpt and asked "What do you mean?"... and, despite your answer, I still do not understand. If a program was written in an assembly language, then that is the source code. If processed (for instance if comments were removed), it is not the source code anymore. The free software definition applies. Unchanged. In particular, if the source code was lost, then the program is not free software. That it runs on an emulator makes no difference when it comes to declaring it free or proprietary. "Preserving our computing heritage" is a separate issue (although having a freely shareable source code certainly helps). And all those difficulties look common to any very old program, not only games but also old spreadsheets and word processors that you put in another category, the extended excerpt being: This typically includes spreadsheets, word processors, and web browsing, but not typically video games. It's not that running nonfree games is acceptable, it's that games don't typically require the degree of compatibility other software requires. I do not want to offend you. I only want to understand you.
Re: [Trisquel-users] trouble with
I tried 'apt-cache search ath9k' and got no results, but given the other issues I was having I doubt my experience is representative of a working install. I can't afford to go too many more hours without a working system, so I've installed Trisquel 7 and will use this as an opportunity to test the upgrade process to Trisquel 8, since I don't have enough RAM to test in a virtual machine. Next weekend I'll give the new ISO another shot. How would I go about saving logs of future attempts?
Re: [Trisquel-users] trouble with
The name of the package with the ath9k firmware (issue 23470) is open-ath9k-htc-firmware. It was added to the meta-packages and it was present when I lived-tested the ISO image, that's why I closed it. If you don't happen to have it something strange might be going on. Ruben was asking a couple of weeks ago about feedback from both the new beta images and the upgrade process. If you have the logs of your tries, it will probably be much appreciated.
Re: [Trisquel-users] GPS navigator with free software
there is a diy option in the #zipit irc channel ask hinv about buying one. http://mozzwald.com/zipitz2 got little pspmaps and navit working on it. hardware struggles with non-local route planning. pspmaps uses google for getting a route plan, so with wifi (non-free firmware or use free usb one.) you can get a route plan more easily. you need a serial or usb gps. i have goodie packs for adaptors and bits i can sell for at cost. other wise your options maybe Chip handheld can be turning into a free gps (there software stack as unnecessary non-free bits which have free replacements.). wait for eoma-68 handheld little device, going to be ages for that, but i look forward to the day. :) wait for a http://pyra-handheld.com/ . loads of little bits of non-free firmware but at least the cpu is free unlike intel. on GPD pocket mini laptop, nonfree wifi,bt,cpu but available for £280~ i forget the flash sale price https://www.gearbest.com/tablet-pcs/pp_613003.html?wid=21 install ubuntu and config navit + bluetooth gps which is a bit fiddly but works or use usb one.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Stuck at login screen after messing with partitions
A mod can, but yeah... been there done that. you can however reinstall thankfully gnu/linux makes that easy.
Re: [Trisquel-users] trouble with
Yes, sometimes Startup Disk Creator doesn't work well and dd works better. That was the case with the previous Flidas ISO. With this ISO however I run into the same problem with either method.
Re: [Trisquel-users] trouble with
This is the best way to burn an iso I believe. :)
Re: [Trisquel-users] Is it ethical to use github?

[Trisquel-users] Software freedom concerns which mainly arise from older programs
I wrote considerably more but a non-representative excerpt quoted read: It's not that running nonfree games is acceptable, it's that games don't typically require the degree of compatibility other software requires. to which lc...@dcc.ufmg.br replied: What do you mean? Free software is not about compatibility. The FSF or RMS would certainly argue that the software part (not the graphics, the sounds, the story, etc.) of a video game must be free software to be ethical. A specific point is that malware can be (and often is, e.g., DRM) implemented in video games. Contrary to your response, I did explain that I understand the free software takes an ethical stance and said as much in text you didn't reproduce. Sometimes there is no source code to license, share, or edit. Sometimes the source is lost or the source code is the distributed machine code. This means one faces a different consideration than one faces for modern programs where source code is available and different than what's distributed. Older games come up with difficulties like this. Regarding game art: It's not always clear how to replace art not licensed to share even verbatim. In some older games the art in the game is not separate from the rest of the game code. There are also some practical problems regarding what we need to get out of emulating old systems to run older software. For now, sharing copies of machine code dumped from old storage media and writing emulators to read and run that code seems to suffice. Unfortunately we do this without the copyright holder's permission. Modern copyright law is useful when we write code from scratch and license it to others under a free license, or write new free software based on other free software. But modern copyright law doesn't grant us what we need to preserve our computing heritage in the most useful way.
[Trisquel-users] Is it ethical to use github?
The FSF rates with F github and an A Savannah. On the other hand, there are a lot of projects that I want to contribute to that are hosted in github... Damned network effect...
Re: [Trisquel-users] trouble with
I tried again with Startup Disk Creator and had the same problem. I just get a black screen with a cursors. Sometimes I get an iwl3945 missing firmware message, but I don't think that's the issue because it always happens in Trisquel until I blacklist the non-free WiFi device. I tried running startx from a terminal and got 'xinit: unable to connect to X server: Connection refused'. Then I tried 'sudo lightdm' and just got the black screen + cursor. This time I also tried running live with 'Try Trisquel Without Installing' and even then had the same problem: just a black screen and cursor. Could it be a libreboot issue? Is this the link you downloaded the ISO from? http://jenkins.trisquel.info/makeiso/iso/
Re: [Trisquel-users] GPS navigator with free software
Yeah, I am afraid so...
Re: [Trisquel-users] GPS navigator with free software
I don't believe the answers have changed.
[Trisquel-users] GPS navigator with free software
Happy Gnu Year, everybody. I am looking for a GPS navigator (receiver and display) and would naturally prefer one running on (as) free (as possible) software. I found a few earlier threats on this topic: https://trisquel.info/en/forum/free-software-friendly-gps https://trisquel.info/en/forum/libre-gps-hardware The - lack of - answers to those OPs are kind of disheartening but I shall try again. I can't seem to find such by search, but does anyone here know of - even at rumour level - such a device?
[Trisquel-users] Re : trouble with
Those steps look correct. As I wrote in https://trisquel.info/forum/testing-trisquel-8-upgrade-process#comment-125646 : I "burned" [the amd64 ISO of December 24th] on a USB pendrive (the FSF member card actually) using Trisquel 7's graphical "USB Creator" (or whatever it is called). Although it looks stuck at some point (at 42% and at 99%, when creating the permanent file), it all ended well.
Re: [Trisquel-users] trouble with
Do you have any idea what I might have done wrong? I burned the 64-bit ISO using $ sudo dd if=/path/to/image.iso of=/dev/sdX bs=8M;sync and attempted to install on a librebooted X60. When that didn't work I started over with a fresh download of the ISO. The exact same steps work fine with the 6/19 ISO.
[Trisquel-users] Re : trouble with
Has anyone successfully installed Trisquel 8 from the 12/24 ISO? I have. And both issues you listed are fixed. See https://trisquel.info/forum/testing-trisquel-8-upgrade-process#comment-125668 and below about that experience (trying to have a usable GNOME Shell). Above for my failed attempts to upgrade from Trisquel 7.

Re: [Trisquel-users] trouble with
The title of this thread was supposed to be 'trouble with new Flidas ISOs from 12/14)
[Trisquel-users] trouble with
I saw that there are new ISOs up here http://jenkins.trisquel.info/makeiso/iso/ and decided to test the 64-bit one. I was not able to get a working display manager or desktop environment from the text installer or graphical installer. The text installer couldn't complete the step where I select a DE. The graphical installer appeared to work, but upon rebooting I got a black screen with no display manager. I opened a terminal with Ctrl+Alt+F1 and was able to determine that MATE was installed. I have submitted a bug report and reinstalled Trisquel 8 from the previous ISO from 6/19. However, if I can I would like to test the new ISO to verify that these issues https://trisquel.info/en/issues/23511 https://trisquel.info/en/issues/23470 are indeed fixed (23470 did not appear to be, as once I had a terminal open I could not find the firmware package via 'apt-cache search') and see if any other issues have been resolved. Has anyone successfully installed Trisquel 8 from the 12/24 ISO? If so, what did you have to do to get it working.
[Trisquel-users] Re : How to spread computing freedom?
They complain about viruses, about the computer being slow, about annoying pop-ups, unwanted programs and sometimes the inability to change the home page of their browser due to some malware. First of all, I do not provide "assistance" with proprietary software. Ever. I offered my wife a cell phone so that I could install LineageOS + F-Droid + ... without the Google Apps. In this way, she is less victim of proprietary software that she would be if she would have bought the phone herself (I do not own a tracking device but she would not do the same). She sometimes complain that I do not want to "help" her with "installing the Uber app" or "having WhatsApp (that she installed herself) put data on the SD card". That would not be "helping" her, from my point of view. I only help with free software. Including installing free software in substitution of malfunctioning proprietary software. At the same time I see that since using free software all those problems have been replaced other, more high quality issues. What "high quality issues"? If you are specific (in a new thread for clarity), somebody here may help you. How can I introduce free software to my family and friends? A transitive phase is important to a successful migration. You can install, on the present operating system, one free software program a week, for instance. A program that will be available as well on GNU/Linux: Firefox, Thunderbird, VLC, LibreOffice, Pidgin, GIMP, Inkscape, Audacity ... are big ones. Part of them probably cover 90% of the needs of a random home user. But learning about the remaining 10%, more specific programs have to be sought. And you should help the user with difficulties she faces. Office file compatibility may be a big one here... Once installed all relevant free software available on Windows, the next step is to install GNU/Linux. With double-boot (less frightening). But GNU/Linux should be the default. And ithe transition is easier if the desktop interface is similar to the previous one. Trisquel's default desktop environment is great for that. But it is essential to introduce as well the free software *philosophy*. A user who understands the injustice of proprietary software will not surrender to it whenever more convenient. For the closer ones, I am thinking of buying libreboot with Trisquel computers. That is a good one... if you first make sure that they will actually use that computer. In particular that they have nothing against refurbished computers. I also frequently help my family with buying hardware. With no OS and Intel graphics (for computers). Supported by LineageOS (they would not use an older phone supported by Replicant) for cell phones. I have spare Wifi adapter with the AR9271 chipset (supported by ath9k_htc, hence by Linux-libre and Trisquel) to give them.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Next Trisquel update (PGADMIN4)
Hi, since I don't know if you are subscribed to the trisquel-users mailing list or if you're paying attention to the forums, I also sent this message directly to you. If I recall correctly, the forums are for end-users, and there is no guarantee that the developers will always be around in the forums. If I recall correctly, the developers use both #trisquel-dev IRC channel, chat.freenode.net, the trisquel-devel mailing list ([1]), the issue tracker in the right menu of this website (where it says "Issues") and also the Git repository at [2]. Morever, I must note that from the documentation about the Trisquel project, one can see that it doesn't provide packages on its own except for rebranding, software freedom issues and other exceptions. This is not to say it can't be done, it just means that except from the cases dealt with by Trisquel, the request should be made to our upstream. With this said, I have searched the upstream's list of packages and found out that pgadmin4 won't be available in Trisquel 8 unless: a) we contact someone from Trisquel to do it. Highly problematic since we would have to maintain it ourselves; b) someone from upstream is contacted to do it, in such case Trisquel will probably pick the changes. However, there is no guarantee that the package will be free/libre software (I don't know anything about it except for what it does); c) contribute to get the package in the official upstream repositories, with same issues as (a) but Trisquel will probably also pick the changes. I hope this helps, happy GNU year! ;) [1] https://listas.trisquel.info/mailman/listinfo/trisquel-devel . Several mirrors of my APT repository exist [0], donated by various people. I've updated the website [1] to provide instructions on how to use these when setting up the repository. Your sources.list file would instead contain the line: deb mirror://linux-libre.fsfla.org/pub/linux-libre/freesh/mirrors.txt freesh main (In case of line wrapping problems this deb mirror:// entry is supposed to all be on one line.) So as to spread out the load, please consider updating your package manager to use this new configuration if possible. Manual apt mirror selection is still possible of course. Indeed. And using the same source, here is the free software status of Chromium (the original question): Chromium might or might not be free. During the last review, the copyright or license of some code was unclear. It also has a similiar problem to Iceweasel and Firefox in which it links to proprietary plugins. (Chromium should NOT be confused with Google Chrome, which shares a codebase with Chromium but is not free software.) It seems like it purged my home directory when I turned off the computer. I do not think so. You probably have /home on a separate partition and that partition is not mounted for some reason. /home would then appear empty. Do you want to recover some data there or are they all backed-up somewhere else? You mentioned GNOME Disks. Its "gear" menu contains "SMART Data & Self-Tests... (Ctrl+S)". Use it if you do not want to recover any (more) data and want to discover whether the hardware is sane.
[Trisquel-users] Re : Testing The Trisquel 8 Upgrade Process
'tee' is a good solution. Also: Precede the command with "LC_ALL=C" to have the command use the system locale (English); a tip for jules_verne too; Use 'apt-get' and not 'apt' (like I did) because its colored output messes the log a little. For example, that command generates good logs (here, in a file named "log"): LC_ALL=C sudo apt-get upgrade | tee log /var/log/apt/term.log.* contains APT's logs too.

No, that's not true. British English and American English are the same language. The spelling differences have nothing to do whatsoever with other languages. They were caused by spelling standard differences a couple hundred years ago. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_and_British_English_spelling_differences

[Trisquel-users] Re : Hot news - Major flaw in Intel CPUs
I believe the researchers only verified Intel/AMD and ARM architectures because they are far more widespread. POWER9 processors use speculative pipelines: https://en.wikichip.org/wiki/ibm/microarchitectures/power9 (see "Speculative" in the info box). That is why I believe they suffer from Spectre, like all modern processors.
[Trisquel-users] Re : Hot news - Major flaw in Intel CPUs
Spectre has nothing to do with 'Management Engines" and the like. It deals with "speculative execution" (e.g., "branch prediction") that aims at faster executions: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Speculative_execution The POWER architecture uses speculative pipelines too: https://en.wikichip.org/wiki/ibm/microarchitectures/power9 (see "Speculative" in the info box). I believe researchers only verified Intel/AMD and ARM architectures because they are far more widespread. POWER processors are probably at risk too.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Writing my ‘common distros’ for us in 2018
...learning English is not easy. Not only is the entire way English grammar works mostly alien to Asian languages I'm not sure about that. English is not easy mainly because of its historic ortography and vast vocabulary, a myriad of idioms which are hard to master even for native speakers. The basic syntax is not much different from, say, Chinese. Word order is mainly the same subject, verb object; very little declension or conjugation. There are any other languages that are harder to tackle at first but easier to master later, like Russian or German. These languages have had more coherence and less variety due to them being languages of nation states.
