Re: [Trisquel-users] Need to compare numbers - Help with script
Btw, I was convinced AWK was like grep and sed, a tool to process text files. But you talk and show it as being a language on its own. Are the two the same thing?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Need to compare numbers - Help with script
First of all, thank you so much for all the detailed explanation about AWK. I cannot say I understood everything (I am used at writing in bash, and from some scripts I have shared here in the Forum you will notice I am not as good at making things simple and straightforward as you are), but your instructions were certainly clear and well written out. I hope others will benefit from reading it too. Second, the first example is indeed what I needed (the result being 3). I run that piece of code and was able to get the results I needed. The script is also fast, which I was worried about given my files were very large. Works great! AWK seems very useful and I hope I will have the time to put into learning it, right now it wasn't possible so I am deeply grateful for your help. Thank you once again!
Re: [Trisquel-users] Need to compare numbers - Help with script
First, thanks for the reply. Second, I never used awk much, if at all, so I have little experience with it (unlike grep which I have used in a few occasions), which is why I didn't think of using it. Third, I will need your help to, first, understand the code you wrote. It seems to me, it is comparing each number to the entire document, am I correct? I ask this because the intention was to only compare each number to the next line. Basically find common numbers between first and second lines, then second and third, then third and fourth, etc etc.
[Trisquel-users] Need to compare numbers - Help with script
So, I have a file with dozens of lines like this 12 13 59 2 102 12 32 2 99 13 102 19 I need to compare if any of the numbers in first line are present in the second line. Then I need to compare if any of the numbers of the second line are in the third. And so on and so on. I don't want to count if the same number appears in both first and third line (13 for example is not to be counted in my example above). Position is not important (number 12 is in first position in the first line, but second position in the second line, I still want to count it). I have been looking at ways to do loops but not sure how to build an array for this (not even sure if an array IS the best option). Any help is greatly appreciated, I usually do well with bash but this time around it's proving more difficult. Thanks!
Re: [Trisquel-users] youtube download difference
For what it's worth, 10 years ago I was running my old laptop with Windows 7. Using 3g internet, I would usually get 3Mbps. When I started using Ubuntu 10.04, I noticed my speeds would get about 7Mbps. I even called my ISP to ask if this could be related to any illegal access my "linux machine" could be doing to get more speed. They assured me that there was no way for me to do any kind of illegal access, but that most users who had Linux would report to them better speeds than Windows users. So, truth is Windows has too many factors that make it slower, which could mean additional downloads (updates and what not).
Re: [Trisquel-users] How to downgrade Icedove from 68 to 60?
Thank you! I will, for now, stick with it. At some point will have to think about finding another RSS solution (one that works well with Onion Services, and has good privacy settings).
Re: [Trisquel-users] How to downgrade Icedove from 68 to 60?
One question, if I install Icedove from that deb, Trisquel updater will not try to force 68.x version right?
Re: [Trisquel-users] How to downgrade Icedove from 68 to 60?
To be honest I was using it mainly for RSS... I had an email account there but it was already available as a JS-free webmail (danwin1210.me, great webmail service, available as Onion too). As for RSS reader, I thought the Torbirdy addon was the safest way to use RSS. Guess I will be back at square zero :(
Re: [Trisquel-users] How to downgrade Icedove from 68 to 60?
It's no use, the same versions appear as they do in Synaptic. Guess I could try downloading the deb file from Debian website, remove Icedove from my system and install it from the deb file... Dependencies are met already, so... Could work maybe...?
Re: [Trisquel-users] How to downgrade Icedove from 68 to 60?
https://trac.torproject.org/projects/tor/ticket/31341 Thanks I will try that. The link above explains the current situation for Torbirdy and 68.x It might work in the future, but not anyone is able to solve it now. Lucky for me, I always play things safe... The emails and RSS feeds I had, were all pointing to Onion services. At worst, my ISP DNS knows that I wanted to reach certain onion sites but not the specific pages I wanted to access (at least I hope so). AND the onion sites themselves didn't get my IP making a connection with user/password, so cannot disclose my identity.
Re: [Trisquel-users] How to downgrade Icedove from 68 to 60?
I suspected as much. But I still need to get to 60.x since I need Torbirdy to work and there is no chance to use it in 68.x At least for now. Hopefully the TAILS team will be able to merge enough patches to upstream and things will be smoother in the future. I was just mentioning that if for some chance some updates came along I would want them to be installed.
Re: [Trisquel-users] How to downgrade Icedove from 68 to 60?
I am running Trisquel 8, but in Synaptic the only options are 68, 52 and 45. Why does Trisquel include older versions such as 45 and not have the version that was available just 2 days ago? :( More to the point, how do I get the 60 version to install? Thanks.
[Trisquel-users] How to downgrade Icedove from 68 to 60?
Hey everyone, Today I had some updates available, one of them being Icedove. I was using Icedove 60, with Torbirdy addon, which is incompatible with Icedove 68. So, how do I downgrade to 60 (to the latest version available if possible) ? And how do I prevent it from being upgraded? I still want to get updates if it's 60. but not 68.xxx Thanks.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Problems with my T400 keyboard
Thanks, I will try later Beko, don't have alcohol available right now (due to the virus situation). In the meantime I used xmodmap to assign another key (one I don't usually need) to be the minus and underscore key. The one that was giving me trouble I disabled with: sudo xmodmap -e 'keycode 61 = ' I don't know however if this will work in the long run, since I believe this is a hardware issue. Still looking for a command that actually tells the hardware to disable the key in question (instead of just mapping an empty value to it).
Re: [Trisquel-users] Problems with my T400 keyboard
I guess I spoke too soon... :( The issue is still occurring, in a random manner. The minus/underscore key doesn't work, but suddenly the machine will think it is being pressed (which makes the computer stop what's doing due to the error). I don't mind the key not working (would just remap it to another key) but I need to solve the issue. Is it possible to disable it in software somehow, in a way the hardware doesn't get affected? I have a T400 librebooted, Trisquel 8. Any help is welcome!
Re: [Trisquel-users] Problems with my T400 keyboard
Well, good news, I took out all the keys, gave it a good cleaning (vaccum cleaner, both inlet and outlet air) and it seems to be working OK now. I know I could use a USB keyboard but right now with the whole virus thing and all it would be a real problem for me if I was left without a working unit as laptop. I am glad that it seems to be working. My advice for myself and other... clean your machines more frequently :)
Re: [Trisquel-users] Problems with my T400 keyboard
Ok, so some updates (good ones or maybe not). I noticed that while the underscore key was unusable, I couldn't also use the combination LeftShift + Asterisk key (the one that has both + and * for math applications). The RightShift worked but the LeftShift only would work with letters not with the specific key I mentioned. I kept blowing air and trying to get the underscore key cleaned, and it eventually did. Now the combination of LeftShift plus Asterisk also works, but the underscore key still sometimes gets printing like crazy. And other moments it doesn't work again. I cannot figure out what it could be, seems like the keyboard is not recongizing the keys properly. Any help? THANKs
[Trisquel-users] Problems with my T400 keyboard
Hey everyone, need some help. I was writing a reply here in the forum a few minutes ago, and noticed one of my keys stopped working (the underscore key). I tried removing the plastic key and cleaning it and nothing helped. However I noticed that it now sometimes gets the system to press that key as if it was stuck (on it's own without me pressing it). Can anyone tell if they ever had such a problem? Sorry if I am not explaining things in proper detail I guess I am a little stressed with this thing happening now :(
Re: [Trisquel-users] MacBook1,1, Libreboot and Trisquel
I cannot help you since I never messed around with Macbooks, but maybe you could try contacting Libreboot developer, Leah. Things are going rough for them right now but maybe they will have an answer to your problems.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Will my T400 be quieter if I replace the HDD with and SSD?
I believe you might be more sensitive to sounds than me. My fan is running at 2000rpm and I can't say I notice it. Or maybe your fan is not operating correctly. Maybe take the machine to a technician and ask for a thorough cleaning and a check-up on the fan. As for the screen, there is nothing that can be done. Minifree used to have a page explaining the issue, but the site is kinda gone. Try using the Archive to access it. But for the most part, take the HDD out and replace with an SSD, you will be glad you did it. Keep in mind the board actually has a speed limit lower than SSD, so don't spend too much to get extra fast drives, just get a good brand and you will be good to go. The optical drive will be an option if you don't need it. Also, the fan is the main culprit most likely, take care of that and you will be good to go.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Will my T400 be quieter if I replace the HDD with and SSD?
I guess he is recommending one of those boards you put underneath the laptop, that have cooling fans. I do have one of these and in my experience makes more noise than the internal fan of the T400. HOWEVER, having the laptop merely on top of it (wihtout turning it on) seems to help cooling it down (better airflow). Now I don't know about you but my T400 doesn't make all that noise. It's important to notice that the screen also makes a little "hiss" sound, which you will notice the difference when the monitor goes to sleep. I recommend the SSD because of the improved speed, battery lasts more, and makes machine lighter. I also removed the optical drive (mine was malfunctioning and I don't need it anyway). All this makes the machine lighter to carry around, and helps in terms of airflow. Remember to clean it well every once in a while.
Re: [Trisquel-users] VRMS
Hardly. You can install Linux-Libre in any distro, Ubuntu for example. That would still leave you with the proprietary junk you had there before. As for the machine itself, you still have the BIOS (only a few machines support Libreboot) and possibly more hardware components that run proprietary software. This is not to demotivate you. Each baby step counts. Install linux libre, or switch to Trisquel altogether. Don't install proprietary software yourself. When possible, buy hardware compatible with free software elements (printers, laptops etc) and each baby step will take you closer to freedom. Keep up the faith!
Re: [Trisquel-users] LibreOffice Alternative
I downloaded the latest apk and installed in my tablet. It opens but when actually trying to create a new file it stops responding. It could be that the android version I am using is too old for this, but I couldn't get it to work with either a word or spreadsheet document. Thanks anyway, I will keep an eye on this.
Re: [Trisquel-users] LibreOffice Alternative
I was convinced that ONLYOFFICE was a online solution only. But in this page (https://www.onlyoffice.com/download-desktop.aspx) they also offer downloadable versions for all operating systems. I suppose that means one could install it on Trisquel in place of LO, if there was a reason for it? That way it wouldn't be SaaSS right, which would be much better? I notice they also have an Android version available as Play Store, I wonder if that is also FLOSS?
Re: [Trisquel-users] LibreOffice Alternative
Given that there is no Office Suite for Android that is Free Software (other than LO Viewer, which is barebones and not functional in all devices), what would be your position regarding OnlyOffice, for using it in Android? Thanks for the input. Also anyone else who has tried it, any feedback is welcome!
Re: [Trisquel-users] Bluetooth and Trisquel 8
Oh, and make sure you are booting the newer kernel. For some reason it could be that you installed it, but are still booting the older one. Just a thought.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Bluetooth and Trisquel 8
Hey there. I also had issues with Bluetooth when I first tried it, but I got it to work. Read my old thread here https://trisquel.info/en/forum/bluethooth-speakers-how-and-should-i I think you will be able to get the needed info from there.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Mate panel windows
I also struggled with that, my solution was to have a thick panel at the bottom for menus and programs shortcuts, and a thin one on top of that for the windows. Being both of the same color it doesn't look as bad. But I wanted to have the windows thick too and could never get it. I don't mind it anympre.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Nobody lasts forever
That makes no sense. RMS was not even involved in Trisquel, so any political opinions of his are in no way affecting the development of Trisquel, the choice of packages included in the distro, the themes (wallpapers, icons, etc). I see NO REASON that I should stop using an OS that has no direct connection to a person, because that person has some political view with which I disagree. I said it before, I disagree with RMS in many things. BUT his contribution for changing the technological world (and the society as a consequence of that) is far too big. The Internet exists relying on Free Software, Linux became the kernel of choice for most devices because it was made Free Software, projects like LibreOffice, Tor, Firefox, GIMP, and thousands of others are what they are BECAUSE they are free software and they rely on GNU-GPL and Copyleft to remain what they are... Smartphones, Android, the Internet itself, the way we use technology today was SHAPED by free software, and the Free Software Movement, and RMS himself. One cannot simply ignore that and put RMS in the corner as a bad person. He did more good than evil (lucky us, I guess). But Trisquel remains operating the same way as it always did. Tor and Icecat too. LibreOffice also. Everything is the same. Why do you feel the need to leave? That makes no sense. What are you going to do, stop using Free Software altogether? Like "I don't use it because RMS said mean things"? Makes no sense. But to each his own.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Nobody lasts forever
What the heck is going on here? I actually read people suggesting that RMS thoughts on some non-technological matter are enough of a reason to abandon a GNU/Linux distro... WTF?? How does any RMS opinion affect the way a GNU/Linux distro works? It's software one is talking about here, not opinions. Tor and I2P are sometimes targeted the same way. People don't want to use it because "bad people also use it". What does that mean? Oh well, thanks for killing my hopes for humanity a little bit more today :P
Re: [Trisquel-users] I don't find it in the repos, has anyone tried this program?
I confirm that it's not possible to install 2.2.1 in Trisquel 8, no matter choosing Disco, Bionic or Cosmic. It always gives an unmet dependency on "gir1.2-gtk-3.0 (>=3.20)" SO I am sticking with 2.1 and hoping there is no serious security flaw unfixed in that version (I don't see much attack surface in such a small app but who knows...) By the way, which version did you install chaosmonk?
Re: [Trisquel-users] I don't find it in the repos, has anyone tried this program?
Though I will have to say that I installed the one marked as " indicator-sound-switcher - 2.1.1ubuntu0-1 (changes file) 2016-11-03 Published Xenial Python" So I am using an older version, in Trisquel 8. I am unsure if running the version for Bionic, Cosmic, or Disco would work as well... Maybe I will unninstall the version I have and install the other one and try?
Re: [Trisquel-users] I don't find it in the repos, has anyone tried this program?
You are indeed right, simply installing it and running in the terminal it works like a charm! I no longer need to go to sound settings and disable built-in sound to get the bluetooth devices to play sound. It's working like a charm! One question though, what did you do to have it starting automatically in the boot? I mean, do you have to have the terminal window always opened? Thanks and sorry for the trouble :)
Re: [Trisquel-users] I don't find it in the repos, has anyone tried this program?
On the contrary your help is much appreciated and welcome. Thanks :)
Re: [Trisquel-users] I don't find it in the repos, has anyone tried this program?
MATE does everything I need, and is lighter in resources. Gnome decided to become too much of a Beast for me. But I understand some people like yourself still prefer it, and I respect that. Good thing we have the choice. Personally I have my system already configured with MATE and won't be changing over a single program.
Re: [Trisquel-users] I don't find it in the repos, has anyone tried this program?
Hey, thanks. I never got around to thank you, so here it is now. Your reply actually made me not want to install it, because like you I won't install Gnome to try it. I will however ask the dev when I can. Thanks.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Need help to evade censorship (DNS based I believe) in multiple networks with Trisquel 8
Actually from what I read many VPN services suffer from DNS leaks (they all say they don't, but many reports show differently). Anyway, your suggestion actually helped me, I thank you for that.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Improve html5 live video streaming
Thank you. I didn't know about streamlink, and for now I have an alternate solution, but it seems interesting (is capable of using Tor or I2P as for proxy, which is good, and support many different kinds of links). I will keep it in memory for a need case. Thanks.
Re: [Trisquel-users] 1920x1080 screen resolution
Probably has to do with the graphics card. Which card is it?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Improve html5 live video streaming
You are right of course. But I would think that Firefox must have it's own caching settings, or am I wrong on this one?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Download a bit larger files fails in Abrowser and Tor
wget is merely a "downloader". It's a program that retrieves data from the server you tell it to. Tor is a network. You can use wget over Tor (though curl is better for that, hence me using it in my script below, give it a shot). wget is as secure as downloading from the browser (more or less, but quite similar), so if you run it over Tor it takes advantage of the encryption.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Download a bit larger files fails in Abrowser and Tor
Could also be: a. The server he is downloading from; b. If downloading from Tor network, the circuit he is using (maybe the Guard Node is having problems, hence his downloads breaking, since that one never changes). Anyway, I feel like it's the server itself. Notice that it apparently has issues resuming the download which it shouldn't, always starting from 0 again. The solution I provided might solve the issue.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Improve html5 live video streaming
First, thanks for all the work. I always appreciate the effort you put into helping others here in the forum! Thanks! Second, I have already (a few months ago) tried doing that. BUT, let's take in consideration I usually have different links and different websites, so there is little point in doing it with scripts and command line and source code... Each time things will be different. The best chance I have is to make Abrowser/Icecat/Firefox/TorBrowser work best playing the live stream with the html5 (or even the JS player). Which makes me wonder again... is there any configuration I can make load more of the streams before initiating playback? Thanks.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Download a bit larger files fails in Abrowser and Tor
I made this script myself to use with Tor for large downloads that suffer from constants breaks. It has some nice automatic features which might be useful. Hope this helps anyone :) Let me know if it solves your problem. Attached.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Improve html5 live video streaming
https://sportbar.biz/sk2serbia.html I believe it requires JS though. Sorry :(
Re: [Trisquel-users] Improve html5 live video streaming
I can't because it's not a single video file. It's a constant stream. In html5 player the right click doesn't show the option to "save video".
[Trisquel-users] Improve html5 live video streaming
Hello everyone, So, when I watch real-time live video streams on the browser, sometimes I get too many pauses (I am unsure if it's caused by the server having too many people watching, or if it is my connection that is too slow to download fast enough). Anyway, it's normal for me to every couple minutes have a pause of a few seconds for the video to load again and keep playing. I would like to try and find a way to "cache" more of the video before playing, meaning I don't mind watching the video a few seconds later, or even a few minutes, if that meant watching without interruptions. However I am unsure how to do it in Firefox (or derivatives, Abrowser, Icecat, etc). Anything I might change in about:config that will do what I want? Thanks.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Force different aspect ratio in secondary screen (or in Firefox?)
As a possible information for future users with same issue, I was able to actually select 720x400 and it looks properly on the TV (a slight part on each side is cut, but barely noticeable). I lose image quality but for what I need it, its good enough. This resolution is 1,8 instead of proper 1,777 but it's good enough. I still use higher resolution when playing video on VLC because VLC can expand the image when necessary. This is ideal for streaming because most online live streams don't have HD anyway. Thanks for all replies anyway!
Re: [Trisquel-users] Need help to evade censorship (DNS based I believe) in multiple networks with Trisquel 8
I changed the settings for IPv4 tab, and I was able to access one website that was blocked before. However, testing against dnsleaktest.com gave me my ISP DNS. That could mean maybe a DNS leak? As in, I am able to access the website but my ISP DNS server still knows what websites I am trying to access? It's better than before (at least I now have access) but I would like to prevent DNS leaks. If possible. Thanks for any advice!
Re: [Trisquel-users] Need help to evade censorship (DNS based I believe) in multiple networks with Trisquel 8
Thanks for the reply! dns.watch seems to be a free DNS, like the others at opennic, right? I could use that, it seems as good as any other... That still leaves the encryption question open... Is it any good to use dnscrypt? COuld I set it up to use with a free DNS like that one? Thanks.
[Trisquel-users] Need help to evade censorship (DNS based I believe) in multiple networks with Trisquel 8
Hey everyone! So, I sometimes have the need to take my laptop with me and use it in different networks, with different ISPs. Unfortunately, in my country we have censorship in place, which happens to differ from ISP to ISP (I believe they were all supposed to block the same websites, but I have noticed some differences, even noticed that it depends on which day I try to access a certain website in a certain ISP). So either way, I have read other people who say that using Google DNS they can access these websites, so I suspect it is merely DNS based which redirect queries for these websites to a page where it says that the Government has blocked that page on national territory. Usually I would use Tor, actually I only recently noticed these blocks because I always use Tor, but when latency is an issue (also speed, but Tor is quite fast, problem is latency I notice), I need to use clearnet access, in order to have the ISP full speed available. What I need is to know how to get around the DNS block, in a way that is secure and private (at least as much as possible). I have read some stuff here in the forums, about OpenNIC and DNSCrypt, but I got confused as to which would be best for it. I need something that is easily changeable in case of need, so a GUI solution would be nice, if not something that I can automate with a script. Any help greatly appreciated and sorry for the long post. THANKS EVERYONE!
Re: [Trisquel-users] Force different aspect ratio in secondary screen (or in Firefox?)
Yes, the TV only has 16:9 and 4:3 options. My older TV used to have a "zoom" option that would solve this (it was used to stretch widescreen up to 16:9, which would be a solution for this issue as well). The TV is a dead end as it seems, no options that I can tweak. I am trying to solve this in software because of that.
[Trisquel-users] Force different aspect ratio in secondary screen (or in Firefox?)
Hello everyone! So, my T400 is connected to my TV using VGA. I can only use 1024x768 (other resolutions don't look properly on the TV) which is a 4:3 AR but the TV is actually shaped as 16:9 screen. So, when I get some video to play there I get the image "horizontally stretched", everything seems a dwarf version of what is should. Playing movies in VLC is not a problem because VLC adjusts the image for the proper AR on demand. However if I try to watch a video online using html5 I have no way to change the AR and so even if the video is 16:9 it still gets the black bars on top and the bottom. Any idea how to change it? Thanks.
Re: [Trisquel-users] URGENT!!!
I understand but again, if it is Off-Topic, it should be tagged as Off-Topic. Simple as that. Anyway, the way I see it the timeline is wrong because in many parts of the world is already August 3rd, and nothing happened. Maybe Jesus was right and no one can know the day, and therefore shouldn't put out statements like that? Oh well, anyway...
Re: [Trisquel-users] URGENT!!!
The "preach!" part was for the OP, since in a way he is preaching a message, I was telling to preach it :P
Re: [Trisquel-users] I don't find it in the repos, has anyone tried this program?
Thanks. Yeah, it's a great app if it works. Hence me asking for someone who has used it to share his experience. Thanks anyway.
Re: [Trisquel-users] URGENT!!!
I don't think it is possible to "prove" what spam is. Since spam is not something that exists in nature, is not a rule of nature, it's merely a concept (even a relatively new one, since I think it is only common for the past 20 years or so). So my concept of the word might be slightly different from yours, but that slight difference can lead to some serious differences in terms of the final conclusion of an argument. I don't see any way to "prove" what spam is, one could only try to find the most common meaning of the word, yet just because a lot of people say something means X that doesn't necessarily prove it. Please correct me if I am mistaken ;) Yes, I agree with the downvotes. For the stated reasons. If it was a tagged Off-Topic, I could maybe upvote it to level it back, but as it is, I agree with the downvotes. Although I can certainly ask for OP to give more details about the importance of his message, since that was his original goal. Otherwise he wouldn't have made the post in the forum in the first place. So... go ahead man, preach!
Re: [Trisquel-users] URGENT!!!
I understand your point, the way I see it we have different views on "spam". I see spam as (usually) automatic and bulk send out of messages with commercial intents, that flood public forums as well as private email accounts without regarding for the disruption they cause. You have a different view, hence our disagreement. I actually have less tolerance for trolling (causing trouble just because) than for people who share something they believe will be of actual use for others. So, yeah, I would have less tolerance for a troll post than to this one. I just think he should have either tagged it as off-topic or posted in the Troll Lounge (seeing as it is an Off-Topic place by itself). But all is good with me, he didn't mistreat anyone, so... No damage was done.
[Trisquel-users] I don't find it in the repos, has anyone tried this program?
Hey, Has anyone tried the Sound Switcher? https://yktoo.com/en/software/indicator-sound-switcher It's GNU-GPL v3, but I would like to know if someone has used it before. I would like to use it because when I connect my bluetooth headphones, sound doesn't automatically switch to it. I have to do it manually, and an applet would help. Just wanted to have some opinions on it before installing it. Thanks.
Re: [Trisquel-users] URGENT!!!
While I don't see anything wrong with you sharing what you perceive as being a prophetic message (especially one that being true would indeed affect everyone in this forum) I don't agree with posting this in the main Trisquel Forum and not even tagging it as "Off-Topic". I would have used the Troll Lounge or at least tagged it. I disagree with calling it spam since I don't think OP was merely trying to promote himself for some sort of gain, if he had done the same thing with a video reporting a Linux vulnerability we would not call it spam.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Could someone elaborate as to why opening a new window for each page is a privacy increase?
If I read the page correctly it's about opening a new "private" window. Which means (I think) that page doesn't give access to the history, cookies, etc from previous privacy pages. If I might add, Tor Browser actually separates cookies by domain and one cannot access another pages' cookies. Which is a great help in terms of privacy.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Unable to play videos on invidio.us
When that happens is usually because NoScript is blocking the media (you don't have to allow JS from Invidious, and even if you do, NoScript might still be blocking media from googlevideo). Since I usually browse the web with Tor Browser in Highest security level, I get that "x message" you refer to. To get the video to play, you will have to allow media in both Invidious and googlevideo, and in order to do so without JS you might have to right-click and select "view video". Invidious might have been changing some stuff since these last few days I get a lot of videos giving errors, maybe some update gone bad. Anyway, to play videos you usually just right-click and select view video. If you have Noscript installed, most likely it's the culprit too.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Need help checking if my system got "infected"
Trisquel doesn't have OpenSSH-Server installed by default I think. I don't have it anyway. But that's enough? I mean... the warning seems a lot less threatening if that's all I have to do :P
Re: [Trisquel-users] Need help checking if my system got "infected"
Thanks. Your also got the Windigo warning thing. That was the one that made me really worry the most. However from what I read in that link above, it seems to be ok. As for "suspect files" you even got more warnings than me though. Anything that you didn't expect or got worried about? Thanks once again. P.S.: Is it possible to remove SSH access from my Trisquel installation, since I never use it, so it can never be used by an attacker? Thanks.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Need help checking if my system got "infected"
OK, so using the help from this site https://www.dedoimedo.com/computers/chkrootkit-ebury-false-positive.html I run $ locate libns2.so Didn't output anything. $ sudo netstat -nap | grep "@/proc/udevd" Didn't output anything. I couldn't run the first command, so I am unsure as to the filesize mentioned. However, I do have chkrootkit version 0.50 installed (default in Trisquel 8) so it might be the issue. Still, would like to have other people's test results to compare. Thanks.
[Trisquel-users] Need help checking if my system got "infected"
Hey, In light of the fact that for some time I went without security updates, I decided to check my system with rkhunter and chkrootkit. Which I know have always been known to deliver some "false positives" which usually needs further inspection. For which I am asking help from other people here who can maybe run these tests and help comparing results, or even speak from their experience. I got these results: sudo rkhunter --check | grep Warning /usr/bin/lwp-request [ Warning ] Checking /dev for suspicious file types [ Warning ] Checking for hidden files and directories[ Warning ] System checks summary = File properties checks... Does anyone else gets this warnings in their Trisquel 8 machine? What should be my next step? Any help is greatly appreciated.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 8 giving an error "packages could not be authenticated"
Shit... it means I have been going without security updates for some time now. After correcting it I got 137 updates, onve of them I noticed was Abrowser which has been receiving regular updates nonetheless. Synaptic should avoid letting the user without security updates, IMHO. Thanks for the help! I don't receive those errors anymore, was able to add "tor" to my sources.list in all lines and get the updates in order. Thanks!
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 8 giving an error "packages could not be authenticated"
I am able, however, to install packages without the system complaining about hash sums and such... My sources.list looks like this now __ # deb http://us.archive.trisquel.info/trisquel/ flidas main # deb http://us.archive.trisquel.info/trisquel/ flidas-updates main # deb http://@SECURITYHOST@@SECURITYPATH@ flidas-security main # See http://trisquel.info/wiki/ for how to upgrade to # newer versions of the distribution. # Uncomment this lines to enable the backports optional repository # deb http://us.archive.trisquel.info/trisquel/ flidas-backports main # deb-src http://us.archive.trisquel.info/trisquel/ flidas-backports main deb tor+https://archive.trisquel.info/trisquel/ flidas main deb-src tor+https://archive.trisquel.info/trisquel/ flidas main #Added by softw$ Should I change something? Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 8 giving an error "packages could not be authenticated"
I don't know, this was made by Synaptic. I have been receiving regular updates, only thing I did was adding the Tor part. I run those commands, and got this: $ sudo apt-get clean $ sudo apt-get update Get:1 tor+http://ppa.launchpad.net/i2p-maintainers/i2p/ubuntu xenial InRelease Get:3 tor+http://ppa.launchpad.net/i2p-maintainers/i2p/ubuntu xenial/main amd64 Packages [1488 B] Get:4 tor+http://ppa.launchpad.net/i2p-maintainers/i2p/ubuntu xenial/main Translation-en [1032 B] Fetched 17,4 MB in 1min 15s (231 kB/s) Reading package lists... Done I don't know why only i2p PPA was used here, I was expecting onionshare PPA and regular trisquel updates as well.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 8 giving an error "packages could not be authenticated"
I tried running sudo apt update and noticed that even some PPAs failed to authenticate (something to do with the Hash Verification). Maybe this means that it's not related to Trisquel server, but instead something on my part. I just don't know what it could be.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 8 giving an error "packages could not be authenticated"
Any help please? Thanks.
[Trisquel-users] Trisquel 8 giving an error "packages could not be authenticated"
Hey, I tried installing some new packages today, and it said that the packages couldn't be authenticated, asking if I wanted to go on and install them anyway. I choose "no". Is anyone having the same issue? My sources.list file looks like this deb tor+https://archive.trisquel.info/trisquel/ flidas main deb-src tor+https://archive.trisquel.info/trisquel/ flidas main #Added by software-properties I remember a few days the Trisquel website had the SSL Certificate wrong for a few hours, could it be related? Thanks.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Best choice for video card
I am not sure if without proprietary firmware and drivers you can use the OpenGL.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel security certificate has expired; Abrowser told me so
same thing happened to me for about half an hour in Tor Browser. I think it was a matter of scheduling that made the new certificate only appear a few minutes after the old one expired. NOthing to worry about.
Re: [Trisquel-users] IceCat update?
And that explains a lot. Thank you. And a thumbs up to quidam for keeping this going!!
Re: [Trisquel-users] IceCat update?
Isn't Icecat behind shcedule by now? I seem to have received Tor Browser updates more recently than last Icecat version.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Home PC hardware with Trisquel
Best way to test is to burn a LiveDVD of Trisquel 8. You can run it without affecting the system or the hardware. However, the biggest loss you will have is in terms of graphical power. Nvidia cards don't work properly with Free Software only. Your mileage may vary but forget about 3d and all that stuff.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Advanced MATE Menu takes a second to open
Thanks, I will give that a try. Quite honestly I think I am over-estimating this, it's only a second in the first time I launch the menu, so... I will test and see if it is worth using another application to speed that. Thanks.
[Trisquel-users] Advanced MATE Menu takes a second to open
Hey everyone, I have been using the Advanced MATE Menu, I like the way it's organized and the fact that I can write the name of the app instead of looking for it in the sub-menus. However the first time I click to open it, it takes a second or two. Afterwards it opens instantaneously. I suppose it's because the first time it has to actually load the icons to memory or something? Anyway, because I am using an SSD and the boot time is quite fast, I would like to know if I can "pre load" the menu when I boot so it becomes faster in the first time I click it. Thanks.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Cannot view embedded Facebook video

Re: [Trisquel-users] Can Trisquel share screen/video wirelessly?
Thanks for the reply. My laptop is a Librebooted T400. It doesn't have HDMI, only VGA, which is what I use. But I was hoping to get a "no cables" solution. I will try looking into that aethercast thing you mentioned. Thanks. Any other options?
[Trisquel-users] Can Trisquel share screen/video wirelessly?
Hey, So, I know smartphones can use Wifi and connect to a HDMI adapter that sends the image to a TV screen wirelessly. Does Trisquel work with some of those devices, meaning, only Free Software solutions? Also, is the stream somehow encrypted or can the wireless router "see" what I seeing in the TV screen? Thanks!
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 8 not reporting GPU temperature
I will seek more info on this and get back to you if I find anything useful. Thanks!
Re: [Trisquel-users] Does Trisquel 8 have TRIM on by default? And does it matter?
I had already checked and /etc/fstab doesn't have "discard" there. I just forgot to mention that in my post. Actually nor seeing it there was the motive for my post. Thanks for the link, it clarified to me that I can just every now and then run my fstrim command and it will be good to go. Thanks!
Re: [Trisquel-users] Does Trisquel 8 have TRIM on by default? And does it matter?
Found it https://libreboot.org/docs/gnulinux/encrypted_parabola.html However I am unsure as if running the command I did (sudo fstrim -v /) actually raises any security issues or not... Or if it was even beneficial from a performance standpoint given that I got the same results in sudo hdparm
[Trisquel-users] Does Trisquel 8 have TRIM on by default? And does it matter?
Hey everyone, So, I noticed my SSD was getting a little filled up (only 70GB free in 256GB) and decided to read about how much it would affect the performance of my machine. From what I understand YES, SSD shouldn't be left nearly full otherwise it affects performance, due to the way SSD works. With that in mind I run: sudo hdparm -Tt /dev/sda And got this: /dev/sda: Timing cached reads: 3644 MB in 2.00 seconds = 1824.91 MB/sec Timing buffered disk reads: 798 MB in 3.01 seconds = 265.42 MB/sec After that I run: sudo fstrim -v / And got this: /: 83,2 GiB (89301729280 bytes) trimmed However running the previous command again: sudo hdparm -Tt /dev/sda gave me the same result as before. So, does it even matter if we use TRIM or not? Also, I read that Ubuntu 14.04 has TRIM on by default. Shouldn't Trisquel 8 have it be default too? And if so, why did it allow me to TRIM 83,2GB when I run it manually? I have a vague memory of Libreboot systems having some issues with TRIM and SSD... But I can't find it anywhere online. Maybe I am mistaken. If someone knows about that I will be thankful too. Thanks!!
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 8 not reporting GPU temperature
Yes, as far as I know it uses Intel integrated HD. But I thought it would give me a separate temperature when doing graphical stuff (watching videos and playing games). Of course, the fact that Magic Banana made that question indicates to me that I am less literate about integrated graphics chips than I thought I was and probably my question was dumb to begin with... Hopefully not :) If someone can clarify I would be thankful.
[Trisquel-users] Trisquel 8 not reporting GPU temperature
Hey there, I am using Trisquel 8, in a T400 Librebooted laptop. I have installed MATE Sensors Applet 1.12.1 and I can get the Hard Drive temperature, both CPU cores temperature, it even tells me if the fan is spinning or not and the amount of RPM. However the GPU always states -128*C (I am using Celsius). I have tried looking online for a solution but only see people talking about Nvidia drivers and stuff... I am unsure if the machine in question has a sensor for the GPU temperature, but I would assume it does, so maybe I need to configure something properly? Thanks for any help you guys can provide.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Sharing a simple script for converting subtitles
And here it is, now spaces are no problem at all! Honestly I believe there might be cases where weird characters will make it malfunction, but as it is, it suits my needs and I don't plan on working on it anymore. Hope this serves someone's needs anyway. GNUser
Re: [Trisquel-users] Sharing a simple script for converting subtitles
Ups... sorry, I just noticed that it only works if the VTT file doens't have any spaces between letters. I am working on solving it now. Will upload new version when it's done.
[Trisquel-users] Sharing a simple script for converting subtitles
Hey guys, Just thought this could be useful for other people out there. When you download a youtube closed caption (subtitles) it usually comes in WebVTT format and encoded as UTF-8. That is a problem since many old media player boxes cannot play those subtitles. So I found a python script on GitHub that converts VTT to SRT and I made a bash script that takes care of the encoding. I also made it so that lines larger than 50 characters are cut in two, since some videos that I watch were subbed without consideration for line length, which could also be a problem. If someone thinks 50 is a wrong number to use please share with us and adjust the script accordingly to your needs. Simply run ./ytsubs.sh and all VTT files will be converted to SRT ones, with proper encoding and line length. Original files are not deleted. As I have mentioned before, you are free to use my scripts for whatever you need them, but seeing as the original python script was not mine and is GPL-V3 licensed I will just consider that all is under the same conditions. Is it appropriate? Hope this helps. P.S.: I tried attaching the files as a ZIP file which was 5kB but Trisquel Forum refused it. I used TAR file which is 20kB. ZIP should be allowed since it's smaller. ytsubs.tar Description: Unix tar archive
Re: [Trisquel-users] Problem in Firefox disables all add-ons - Abrowser and IceCat could be affected too
Tor Browser is affected and Tor Project issued a post where they give a workaround. https://blog.torproject.org/noscript-temporarily-disabled-tor-browser Hope this helps
Re: [Trisquel-users] Inappropriate presence of entertainment system emulators in Trisquel repository
This has been debated before. The truth is that there are libre games for almost all the platforms that those emulators you mention support. Do people really play those instead of the proprietary games? Maybe not. But the possibility exists and therefore shouldn't be removed. Also, I would be disappointed if I couldn't find an emulator for old systems such as SNES and Genesis. Those games have no internet connection, no way to escape the "sandbox" of the emulator itself, and have a nostalgic value for most users, they are not merely games as much as they are showcases of how we got here in terms of gaming industry. For these reasons, emulators are seen as being a tolerable less than ideal option. I understand your opinion and respect it, though I don't see reasons hard enough to remove those. Other users can help you find libre games for those emulators and a quick internet search will also help you.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Why isn't python3-distutils available for installation?
Thank you for the clarification on the matter. I have no experience with Python, hence my fear about installing it. If I understand correctly, after it's installed it can automatically download and install proprietary modules if they are required by another application, correct? If that was not the case I would happily install it. But as it is now, I will have to stick with OnionShare 1.3 :( for now it's not a problem, but if a serious security bug is ever disclosed I don't know what to do. There are not many alternatives to this kind of specific tool...
Re: [Trisquel-users] Why isn't python3-distutils available for installation?
"suggests" meaning it's not a dependency right? Couldn't apt be set to merely not suggest those instead of removing the entire thing? Or is it not doable in Trisquel? If I get the .deb file from Debian is it safe to install or will it pull some proprietary stuff from their site? Thanks.
[Trisquel-users] Why isn't python3-distutils available for installation?
I wanted to upgrade OnionShare from old 1.3 version to 2.0 version. I noticed that it depends on python3-distutils but apparently while it is available in Ubuntu 16.04 it's not in Trisquel 8. Is it non-free?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Use android as virtual keyboard/mouse over Trisquel 8
Thanks. I wanted o avoid this one for fear that it would depend on many KDE packages but I see that's not the case. I will try it out. Thanks!
Re: [Trisquel-users] Security problems with http updates, might also affect Trisquel
Thanks for the reply Magic Banana. I wonder, shouldn't we still get rid of the http mirrors in light of what the article above says? Apparently it affects Debian and all derivatives (Ubuntu, etc). One more question I admit that my sources.list was filled with http mirrors, and I changed it. Are these lines enough? deb tor+https://archive.trisquel.info/trisquel/ flidas main deb-src tor+https://archive.trisquel.info/trisquel/ flidas main #Added by softw$ Or am I missing the "security" ones? I used to have those before... Thanks.
[Trisquel-users] Security problems with http updates, might also affect Trisquel
Hey guys, According to The Guardian Project there are security issues with using http to update from official repositories. I wonder if this also affects Trisquel and wether using "tor+http" should be enough to stop it? This is the article https://guardianproject.info/2019/01/23/use-onions-https-for-software-updates Hope someone will have more insight about this than I do. If necessary I could open a bug ticket, not sure if it's the best thing to do? Thanks.
