Re: [Trisquel-users] Need to compare numbers - Help with script

2020-07-12 Thread gnuser
Btw, I was convinced AWK was like grep and sed, a tool to process text files.
But you talk and show it as being a language on its own. Are the two the same
thing?

Re: [Trisquel-users] Need to compare numbers - Help with script

2020-07-12 Thread gnuser
First of all, thank you so much for all the detailed explanation about AWK. I
cannot say I understood everything (I am used at writing in bash, and from
some scripts I have shared here in the Forum you will notice I am not as good
at making things simple and straightforward as you are), but your
instructions were certainly clear and well written out. I hope others will
benefit from reading it too.

Second, the first example is indeed what I needed (the result being 3). I run
that piece of code and was able to get the results I needed. The script is
also fast, which I was worried about given my files were very large. Works
great!

AWK seems very useful and I hope I will have the time to put into learning
it, right now it wasn't possible so I am deeply grateful for your help. Thank
you once again!

Re: [Trisquel-users] Need to compare numbers - Help with script

2020-07-09 Thread gnuser

First, thanks for the reply.

Second, I never used awk much, if at all, so I have little experience with it
(unlike grep which I have used in a few occasions), which is why I didn't
think of using it.

Third, I will need your help to, first, understand the code you wrote. It
seems to me, it is comparing each number to the entire document, am I
correct? I ask this because the intention was to only compare each number to
the next line.
Basically find common numbers between first and second lines, then second and
third, then third and fourth, etc etc.

[Trisquel-users] Need to compare numbers - Help with script

2020-07-08 Thread gnuser

So, I have a file with dozens of lines like this

12 13 59 2
102 12 32 2
99 13 102 19

I need to compare if any of the numbers in first line are present in the
second line. Then I need to compare if any of the numbers of the second line
are in the third. And so on and so on. I don't want to count if the same
number appears in both first and third line (13 for example is not to be
counted in my example above).
Position is not important (number 12 is in first position in the first line,
but second position in the second line, I still want to count it).

I have been looking at ways to do loops but not sure how to build an array
for this (not even sure if an array IS the best option).

Any help is greatly appreciated, I usually do well with bash but this time
around it's proving more difficult. Thanks!

Re: [Trisquel-users] youtube download difference

2020-05-16 Thread gnuser
For what it's worth, 10 years ago I was running my old laptop with Windows 7.
Using 3g internet, I would usually get 3Mbps. When I started using Ubuntu
10.04, I noticed my speeds would get about 7Mbps. I even called my ISP to ask
if this could be related to any illegal access my "linux machine" could be
doing to get more speed. They assured me that there was no way for me to do
any kind of illegal access, but that most users who had Linux would report to
them better speeds than Windows users.

So, truth is Windows has too many factors that make it slower, which could
mean additional downloads (updates and what not).

Thank you!
I will, for now, stick with it. At some point will have to think about
finding another RSS solution (one that works well with Onion Services, and
has good privacy settings).

Re: [Trisquel-users] How to downgrade Icedove from 68 to 60?

2020-04-25 Thread gnuser
One question, if I install Icedove from that deb, Trisquel updater will not
try to force 68.x version right?

Re: [Trisquel-users] How to downgrade Icedove from 68 to 60?

To be honest I was using it mainly for RSS... I had an email account there
but it was already available as a JS-free webmail (danwin1210.me, great
webmail service, available as Onion too).
As for RSS reader, I thought the Torbirdy addon was the safest way to use
RSS. Guess I will be back at square zero :(

Re: [Trisquel-users] How to downgrade Icedove from 68 to 60?

2020-04-25 Thread gnuser

It's no use, the same versions appear as they do in Synaptic.
Guess I could try downloading the deb file from Debian website, remove
Icedove from my system and install it from the deb file... Dependencies are
met already, so... Could work maybe...?

Thanks I will try that.
The link above explains the current situation for Torbirdy and 68.x
It might work in the future, but not anyone is able to solve it now.

Lucky for me, I always play things safe... The emails and RSS feeds I had,
were all pointing to Onion services. At worst, my ISP DNS knows that I wanted
to reach certain onion sites but not the specific pages I wanted to access
(at least I hope so). AND the onion sites themselves didn't get my IP making
a connection with user/password, so cannot disclose my identity.

Re: [Trisquel-users] How to downgrade Icedove from 68 to 60?

2020-04-25 Thread gnuser

I suspected as much.
But I still need to get to 60.x since I need Torbirdy to work and there is no
chance to use it in 68.x
At least for now. Hopefully the TAILS team will be able to merge enough
patches to upstream and things will be smoother in the future.
I was just mentioning that if for some chance some updates came along I would
want them to be installed.

More to the point, how do I get the 60 version to install?

Thanks, I will try later Beko, don't have alcohol available right now (due to
the virus situation).

In the meantime I used xmodmap to assign another key (one I don't usually
need) to be the minus and underscore key. The one that was giving me trouble
I disabled with:

sudo xmodmap -e 'keycode 61 = '

I don't know however if this will work in the long run, since I believe this
is a hardware issue. Still looking for a command that actually tells the
hardware to disable the key in question (instead of just mapping an empty
value to it).

Re: [Trisquel-users] Problems with my T400 keyboard

2020-04-07 Thread gnuser

I guess I spoke too soon... :(
The issue is still occurring, in a random manner. The minus/underscore key
doesn't work, but suddenly the machine will think it is being pressed (which
makes the computer stop what's doing due to the error).
I don't mind the key not working (would just remap it to another key) but I
need to solve the issue.

Is it possible to disable it in software somehow, in a way the hardware
doesn't get affected? I have a T400 librebooted, Trisquel 8.

Any help is welcome!

and all it would be a real problem for me if I was left without a working

My advice for myself and other... clean your machines more frequently :)

Re: [Trisquel-users] Problems with my T400 keyboard

2020-04-06 Thread gnuser

Ok, so some updates (good ones or maybe not).
I noticed that while the underscore key was unusable, I couldn't also use the
combination LeftShift + Asterisk key (the one that has both + and * for math
applications). The RightShift worked but the LeftShift only would work with
letters not with the specific key I mentioned.
I kept blowing air and trying to get the underscore key cleaned, and it
eventually did. Now the combination of LeftShift plus Asterisk also works,
but the underscore key still sometimes gets printing like crazy. And other
moments it doesn't work again. I cannot figure out what it could be, seems
like the keyboard is not recongizing the keys properly.

Any help? THANKs

Re: [Trisquel-users] Will my T400 be quieter if I replace the HDD with and SSD?

2020-04-04 Thread gnuser
I believe you might be more sensitive to sounds than me. My fan is running at
2000rpm and I can't say I notice it. Or maybe your fan is not operating
correctly. Maybe take the machine to a technician and ask for a thorough
cleaning and a check-up on the fan.
As for the screen, there is nothing that can be done. Minifree used to have a
page explaining the issue, but the site is kinda gone. Try using the Archive
to access it.

But for the most part, take the HDD out and replace with an SSD, you will be
glad you did it. Keep in mind the board actually has a speed limit lower than
SSD, so don't spend too much to get extra fast drives, just get a good brand
and you will be good to go. The optical drive will be an option if you don't
need it. Also, the fan is the main culprit most likely, take care of that and
you will be good to go.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Will my T400 be quieter if I replace the HDD with and SSD?

2020-04-01 Thread gnuser
I guess he is recommending one of those boards you put underneath the laptop,
that have cooling fans. I do have one of these and in my experience makes
more noise than the internal fan of the T400. HOWEVER, having the laptop
merely on top of it (wihtout turning it on) seems to help cooling it down
(better airflow).
Now I don't know about you but my T400 doesn't make all that noise. It's
important to notice that the screen also makes a little "hiss" sound, which
you will notice the difference when the monitor goes to sleep.

I recommend the SSD because of the improved speed, battery lasts more, and
makes machine lighter. I also removed the optical drive (mine was
malfunctioning and I don't need it anyway). All this makes the machine
lighter to carry around, and helps in terms of airflow. Remember to clean it
well every once in a while.

Re: [Trisquel-users] VRMS

2020-03-28 Thread gnuser

Hardly.
You can install Linux-Libre in any distro, Ubuntu for example. That would
still leave you with the proprietary junk you had there before.

As for the machine itself, you still have the BIOS (only a few machines
support Libreboot) and possibly more hardware components that run proprietary
software.

This is not to demotivate you. Each baby step counts. Install linux libre, or
switch to Trisquel altogether. Don't install proprietary software yourself.
When possible, buy hardware compatible with free software elements (printers,
laptops etc) and each baby step will take you closer to freedom. Keep up the
faith!

Re: [Trisquel-users] Nobody lasts forever

2019-09-18 Thread gnuser
That makes no sense. RMS was not even involved in Trisquel, so any political
opinions of his are in no way affecting the development of Trisquel, the
choice of packages included in the distro, the themes (wallpapers, icons,
etc). I see NO REASON that I should stop using an OS that has no direct
connection to a person, because that person has some political view with
which I disagree.
I said it before, I disagree with RMS in many things. BUT his contribution
for changing the technological world (and the society as a consequence of
that) is far too big. The Internet exists relying on Free Software, Linux
became the kernel of choice for most devices because it was made Free
Software, projects like LibreOffice, Tor, Firefox, GIMP, and thousands of
others are what they are BECAUSE they are free software and they rely on
GNU-GPL and Copyleft to remain what they are... Smartphones, Android, the
Internet itself, the way we use technology today was SHAPED by free software,
and the Free Software Movement, and RMS himself. One cannot simply ignore
that and put RMS in the corner as a bad person. He did more good than evil
(lucky us, I guess).

But Trisquel remains operating the same way as it always did. Tor and Icecat
too. LibreOffice also. Everything is the same. Why do you feel the need to
leave? That makes no sense. What are you going to do, stop using Free
Software altogether? Like "I don't use it because RMS said mean things"?
Makes no sense. But to each his own.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Nobody lasts forever

2019-09-18 Thread gnuser

What the heck is going on here?
I actually read people suggesting that RMS thoughts on some non-technological
matter are enough of a reason to abandon a GNU/Linux distro... WTF?? How does
any RMS opinion affect the way a GNU/Linux distro works? It's software one is
talking about here, not opinions. Tor and I2P are sometimes targeted the same
way. People don't want to use it because "bad people also use it". What does
that mean?

Oh well, thanks for killing my hopes for humanity a little bit more today :P

wget is merely a "downloader". It's a program that retrieves data from the
server you tell it to. Tor is a network. You can use wget over Tor (though
curl is better for that, hence me using it in my script below, give it a
shot). wget is as secure as downloading from the browser (more or less, but
quite similar), so if you run it over Tor it takes advantage of the
encryption.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Download a bit larger files fails in Abrowser and Tor

Could also be:

a. The server he is downloading from;
b. If downloading from Tor network, the circuit he is using (maybe the Guard
Node is having problems, hence his downloads breaking, since that one never
changes).

Anyway, I feel like it's the server itself. Notice that it apparently has
issues resuming the download which it shouldn't, always starting from 0
again. The solution I provided might solve the issue.

2019-08-30 Thread gnuser

Hello everyone,

So, when I watch real-time live video streams on the browser, sometimes I get
too many pauses (I am unsure if it's caused by the server having too many
people watching, or if it is my connection that is too slow to download fast
enough). Anyway, it's normal for me to every couple minutes have a pause of a
few seconds for the video to load again and keep playing. I would like to try
and find a way to "cache" more of the video before playing, meaning I don't
mind watching the video a few seconds later, or even a few minutes, if that
meant watching without interruptions. However I am unsure how to do it in
Firefox (or derivatives, Abrowser, Icecat, etc). Anything I might change in
about:config that will do what I want?

Thanks.

actually select 720x400 and it looks properly on the TV (a slight part on
each side is cut, but barely noticeable). I lose image quality but for what I
need it, its good enough. This resolution is 1,8 instead of proper 1,777 but
it's good enough. I still use higher resolution when playing video on VLC
because VLC can expand the image when necessary. This is ideal for streaming
because most online live streams don't have HD anyway.

[Trisquel-users] Need help to evade censorship (DNS based I believe) in multiple networks with Trisquel 8

2019-08-25 Thread gnuser

Hey everyone!

So, I sometimes have the need to take my laptop with me and use it in
different networks, with different ISPs. Unfortunately, in my country we have
censorship in place, which happens to differ from ISP to ISP (I believe they
were all supposed to block the same websites, but I have noticed some
differences, even noticed that it depends on which day I try to access a
certain website in a certain ISP). So either way, I have read other people
who say that using Google DNS they can access these websites, so I suspect it
is merely DNS based which redirect queries for these websites to a page where
it says that the Government has blocked that page on national territory.

Usually I would use Tor, actually I only recently noticed these blocks
because I always use Tor, but when latency is an issue (also speed, but Tor
is quite fast, problem is latency I notice), I need to use clearnet access,
in order to have the ISP full speed available. What I need is to know how to
get around the DNS block, in a way that is secure and private (at least as
much as possible). I have read some stuff here in the forums, about OpenNIC
and DNSCrypt, but I got confused as to which would be best for it. I need
something that is easily changeable in case of need, so a GUI solution would
be nice, if not something that I can automate with a script.

Any help greatly appreciated and sorry for the long post. THANKS EVERYONE!

Yes, the TV only has 16:9 and 4:3 options. My older TV used to have a "zoom"
option that would solve this (it was used to stretch widescreen up to 16:9,
which would be a solution for this issue as well).
The TV is a dead end as it seems, no options that I can tweak. I am trying to
solve this in software because of that.

[Trisquel-users] Force different aspect ratio in secondary screen (or in Firefox?)

2019-08-15 Thread gnuser

Hello everyone!

So, my T400 is connected to my TV using VGA. I can only use 1024x768 (other
resolutions don't look properly on the TV) which is a 4:3 AR but the TV is
actually shaped as 16:9 screen. So, when I get some video to play there I get
the image "horizontally stretched", everything seems a dwarf version of what
is should. Playing movies in VLC is not a problem because VLC adjusts the
image for the proper AR on demand. However if I try to watch a video online
using html5 I have no way to change the AR and so even if the video is 16:9
it still gets the black bars on top and the bottom. Any idea how to change
it?

Thanks.

I understand but again, if it is Off-Topic, it should be tagged as Off-Topic.
Simple as that.

Anyway, the way I see it the timeline is wrong because in many parts of the

no one can know the day, and therefore shouldn't put out statements like
that? Oh well, anyway...

I don't think it is possible to "prove" what spam is. Since spam is not
something that exists in nature, is not a rule of nature, it's merely a
concept (even a relatively new one, since I think it is only common for the
past 20 years or so). So my concept of the word might be slightly different
from yours, but that slight difference can lead to some serious differences
in terms of the final conclusion of an argument. I don't see any way to
"prove" what spam is, one could only try to find the most common meaning of
the word, yet just because a lot of people say something means X that doesn't
necessarily prove it. Please correct me if I am mistaken ;)

Yes, I agree with the downvotes. For the stated reasons. If it was a tagged
Off-Topic, I could maybe upvote it to level it back, but as it is, I agree
with the downvotes. Although I can certainly ask for OP to give more details
about the importance of his message, since that was his original goal.
Otherwise he wouldn't have made the post in the forum in the first place.
So... go ahead man, preach!

Re: [Trisquel-users] URGENT!!!

2019-08-01 Thread gnuser
I understand your point, the way I see it we have different views on "spam".
I see spam as (usually) automatic and bulk send out of messages with
commercial intents, that flood public forums as well as private email
accounts without regarding for the disruption they cause. You have a
different view, hence our disagreement.

I actually have less tolerance for trolling (causing trouble just because)
than for people who share something they believe will be of actual use for
others. So, yeah, I would have less tolerance for a troll post than to this
one. I just think he should have either tagged it as off-topic or posted in
the Troll Lounge (seeing as it is an Off-Topic place by itself).

But all is good with me, he didn't mistreat anyone, so... No damage was done.

Re: [Trisquel-users] URGENT!!!

2019-08-01 Thread gnuser
While I don't see anything wrong with you sharing what you perceive as being
a prophetic message (especially one that being true would indeed affect
everyone in this forum) I don't agree with posting this in the main Trisquel
Forum and not even tagging it as "Off-Topic". I would have used the Troll
Lounge or at least tagged it.

I disagree with calling it spam since I don't think OP was merely trying to
promote himself for some sort of gain, if he had done the same thing with a
video reporting a Linux vulnerability we would not call it spam.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Could someone elaborate as to why opening a new window for each page is a privacy increase?

2019-07-12 Thread gnuser
If I read the page correctly it's about opening a new "private" window. Which
means (I think) that page doesn't give access to the history, cookies, etc

If I might add, Tor Browser actually separates cookies by domain and one
cannot access another pages' cookies. Which is a great help in terms of
privacy.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Unable to play videos on invidio.us

2019-06-18 Thread gnuser
When that happens is usually because NoScript is blocking the media (you
don't have to allow JS from Invidious, and even if you do, NoScript might
still be blocking media from googlevideo).
Since I usually browse the web with Tor Browser in Highest security level, I
get that "x message" you refer to. To get the video to play, you will have to
allow media in both Invidious and googlevideo, and in order to do so without
JS you might have to right-click and select "view video". Invidious might
have been changing some stuff since these last few days I get a lot of videos
giving errors, maybe some update gone bad. Anyway, to play videos you usually
just right-click and select view video. If you have Noscript installed, most
likely it's the culprit too.

[Trisquel-users] Does Trisquel 8 have TRIM on by default? And does it matter?

2019-05-25 Thread gnuser

Hey everyone,

So, I noticed my SSD was getting a little filled up (only 70GB free in 256GB)
and decided to read about how much it would affect the performance of my
machine.

From what I understand YES, SSD shouldn't be left nearly full otherwise it
affects performance, due to the way SSD works. With that in mind I run:

sudo hdparm -Tt /dev/sda

And got this:

/dev/sda:
 Timing cached reads: 3644 MB in 2.00 seconds = 1824.91 MB/sec
 Timing buffered disk reads: 798 MB in 3.01 seconds = 265.42 MB/sec

After that I run:

sudo fstrim -v /

And got this:

/: 83,2 GiB (89301729280 bytes) trimmed

However running the previous command again:

sudo hdparm -Tt /dev/sda

gave me the same result as before. So, does it even matter if we use TRIM or
not?

Also, I read that Ubuntu 14.04 has TRIM on by default. Shouldn't Trisquel 8
have it be default too? And if so, why did it allow me to TRIM 83,2GB when I
run it manually?

I have a vague memory of Libreboot systems having some issues with TRIM and
SSD... But I can't find it anywhere online. Maybe I am mistaken. If someone
knows about that I will be thankful too.

Thanks!!

I have tried looking online for a solution but only see people talking about

[Trisquel-users] Sharing a simple script for converting subtitles

2019-05-15 Thread gnuser

Hey guys,

Just thought this could be useful for other people out there.
When you download a youtube closed caption (subtitles) it usually comes in
WebVTT format and encoded as UTF-8. That is a problem since many old media
player boxes cannot play those subtitles.
So I found a python script on GitHub that converts VTT to SRT and I made a
bash script that takes care of the encoding. I also made it so that lines
larger than 50 characters are cut in two, since some videos that I watch were
subbed without consideration for line length, which could also be a problem.
If someone thinks 50 is a wrong number to use please share with us and adjust
the script accordingly to your needs.
Simply run ./ytsubs.sh and all VTT files will be converted to SRT ones, with
proper encoding and line length. Original files are not deleted.

As I have mentioned before, you are free to use my scripts for whatever you
need them, but seeing as the original python script was not mine and is
GPL-V3 licensed I will just consider that all is under the same conditions.
Is it appropriate?

Hope this helps.

P.S.: I tried attaching the files as a ZIP file which was 5kB but Trisquel
Forum refused it. I used TAR file which is 20kB. ZIP should be allowed since
it's smaller.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Inappropriate presence of entertainment system emulators in Trisquel repository

2019-05-02 Thread gnuser
This has been debated before. The truth is that there are libre games for
almost all the platforms that those emulators you mention support. Do people
really play those instead of the proprietary games? Maybe not. But the
possibility exists and therefore shouldn't be removed.

Also, I would be disappointed if I couldn't find an emulator for old systems
such as SNES and Genesis. Those games have no internet connection, no way to
escape the "sandbox" of the emulator itself, and have a nostalgic value for
most users, they are not merely games as much as they are showcases of how we
got here in terms of gaming industry. For these reasons, emulators are seen
as being a tolerable less than ideal option.

I understand your opinion and respect it, though I don't see reasons hard
enough to remove those.
Other users can help you find libre games for those emulators and a quick
internet search will also help you.

serious security bug is ever disclosed I don't know what to do. There are not
many alternatives to this kind of specific tool...

Re: [Trisquel-users] Why isn't python3-distutils available for installation?

"suggests" meaning it's not a dependency right? Couldn't apt be set to merely
not suggest those instead of removing the entire thing? Or is it not doable
in Trisquel?

If I get the .deb file from Debian is it safe to install or will it pull some
proprietary stuff from their site?

Thanks.

[Trisquel-users] Why isn't python3-distutils available for installation?

2019-04-29 Thread gnuser

I wanted to upgrade OnionShare from old 1.3 version to 2.0 version.
I noticed that it depends on python3-distutils but apparently while it is
available in Ubuntu 16.04 it's not in Trisquel 8.

Is it non-free?

Thanks. I wanted o avoid this one for fear that it would depend on many KDE
packages but I see that's not the case. I will try it out. Thanks!

Re: [Trisquel-users] Security problems with http updates, might also affect Trisquel

2019-04-29 Thread gnuser
Thanks for the reply Magic Banana. I wonder, shouldn't we still get rid of
the http mirrors in light of what the article above says? Apparently it
affects Debian and all derivatives (Ubuntu, etc).

One more question I admit that my sources.list was filled with http mirrors,
and I changed it. Are these lines enough?

deb tor+https://archive.trisquel.info/trisquel/ flidas main
deb-src tor+https://archive.trisquel.info/trisquel/ flidas main #Added by
softw$

Or am I missing the "security" ones? I used to have those before...
Thanks.

[Trisquel-users] Security problems with http updates, might also affect Trisquel

2019-04-28 Thread gnuser

Hey guys,

According to The Guardian Project there are security issues with using http
to update from official repositories. I wonder if this also affects Trisquel
and wether using "tor+http" should be enough to stop it?
This is the article
https://guardianproject.info/2019/01/23/use-onions-https-for-software-updates

Hope someone will have more insight about this than I do. If necessary I
could open a bug ticket, not sure if it's the best thing to do?

Thanks.
