Re: [Trisquel-users] h-node wrong Trisquel info?
I also highly doubt that this information is correct. Trisquel 5.5 is also a very old version, which probably is not run anymore by anyone on this forum.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Replicant: First steps to wifi support
Apologies for misleading comments and thank you very much for your clarifications, Fil. I realize that having wifi dongle support is not "the real thing" yet but it's far better than nothing. Keep up the good work, guys!
Re: [Trisquel-users] Replicant: First steps to wifi support
I think the main issue that has been solved by the poster on the Replicant forums is the following: "Warning! This modified nonofficial Replicant version is experimental and until this moment we haven't been able to get WiFi working after a reboot without reformatting /data partition.". Apparently, this seems to be the real news.
[Trisquel-users] Replicant: First steps to wifi support
I don't know too much about smartphones and their underlying technology but the Replicant project seems to have made some very serious recent progress concerning official wifi support: http://redmine.replicant.us/boards/9/topics/13932?r=13982 If some of you happen to know more than me about smartphone driver programming, please help out to make this a reality as fast as possible as it would be a very crucial step for the whole project (I guess).
[Trisquel-users] Another future for libre computing?
The crowdfunding campaign for "the world's first ATX-compatible, workstation-class mainboard for the IBM POWER8 processor." has just started: https://www.crowdsupply.com/raptor-computing-systems/talos-secure-workstation The company describes their new project as follows: " Talos™ is the world's first ATX-compatible, workstation-class mainboard for the new, free-software friendly IBM POWER8 processor and architecture. Designed for security-conscious users requiring high performance, the flexible and extensible Talos™ mainboard includes two Coherent Accelerator Processor Interface (CAPI) capable slots; utilizes libre-toolchain FPGAs for system control and routing; provides a plethora of PCI Express slots; and includes a GPIO header for custom peripherals. Talos™ schematics[1] and libre (fully open and auditable) firmware also are included. Why POWER? POWER is the only open, owner-controllable architecture that is competitive in performance. No other architecture comes close to POWER's unique advantages. See a direct comparison of POWER8 with libre and non-libre systems. Why Talos™? Security-minded individuals and corporations can own a Talos™ Secure Workstation mainboard, complete with an entry-level 8-core 130W POWER8 CPU, heatsink / fan assembly, and ATX I/O shield, for around $5,300 USD. Because Talos™ is specifically designed for workstation use, you don't need to have a small server under your desk to realize the advantages of POWER8!" I'm happy about this campaign because having more hardware options to choose from can never be a bad thing. In particular, that does not mean that other efforts (such as the EOMA68 devices) are any less worthy...

Hello there, I can tell you from experience that VGA and HDMI work perfectly well with Trisquel, even though you might have to do some fine tuning in order to get the resolution you want. Enjoy your freedom!
Re: [Trisquel-users] If Rubén harassed Libreboot's Leah Rowe, he should be fired and Trisquel shut down
What are trying to achieve with this new thread? Pouring more oil into the fire? Shouldn't we first wait for the facts? The list of facts we have at hand so far is: - Libreboot left the GNU project - There are many wild accusations from many parties out there Anything else is just pure speculation. Why should the Trisquel project be shut down? Because of (so far unproven) accusations? I don't think so...
Re: [Trisquel-users] Libreboot leaves FSF. Says FSF shouldn't exist anymore.
There is now an official announcement from Libreboot: https://libreboot.org/gnu/ This whole issue is wrong on so many levels and does so much harm to the GNU project, the FSF and (most of all) to Libreboot itself. Let's hope that all involved parties can soon talk things through and fix this once and for all.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Best free software friendly router
Ok, after performing some research I now get the general idea about this whole "FCC vs. free firmware" issue. @Chris: I think it's very confusing that the official link from the FSF website redirects to an "access denied" page. I know that you must be very busy these days but wouldn't it be a good idea to create a simple page explaining all the backgrounds to potential customers (or at least linking to such a page)?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Best free software friendly router
I'm confused now. Does that mean that I can't buy the mentioned router from you at this moment? If yes, I still don't understand why exactly. What's your suggestion in the meantime? I need a new router right now, unfortunately. If you don't sell this router, I would have to buy this model from some other place and flash it myself or turn to your competitors. However, I don't want to do that, as I like your shop, its ideology and this new modular laptop and I wpuld like to support that.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Best free software friendly router
I already contacted him but didn't get a reply so far, which is why I tried to ask here whether you know of some other sources I could use to get a new router and help free software at the same time.
[Trisquel-users] Best free software friendly router
Hello guys, I just have one very quick question for you: Which routers do you use (with free firmwares, of course) and where did you get them from? I was actually planning to buy a new router for myself and wanted to go for the FSF-certified TPE-NWIFIROUTER (https://www.fsf.org/news/thinkpenguin-wireless-router-now-fsf-certified-to-respect-your-freedom). I figured it would maybe be the best idea to buy it directly from ThinkPenguin but on their website I just get a "Access denied" message: https://www.thinkpenguin.com/gnu-linux/free-software-wireless-n-broadband-router-gnu-linux-tpe-nwifirouter2. I know that Chris must be extremely busy these days but I would still be happy to buy a router from him. ;-) Any ideas on how I would go about getting one? Thank you.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Development updates
Interesting! Thank you for that link. I'm also wondering why this has been abandoned.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Development updates
I'm not really sure about the general financial situation of Trisquel but wouldn't it be an option to create a "bounty" program to help fix urgent issues? It could, for example, work as follows: User A is eager to see feature X and is willing to pay 10 euros for seeing it in Trisquel. User B wants this feature even more and adds 100 euros to this bounty. Developer D (who might or might not be Ruben) then implements the feature and gets the money. Doesnt't this sound like a plan?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Development updates
That's what I was talking about! Thank you very much for providing some updates. @jxself: That's very generous. You are awesome. :-) @Ruben: Do you have any plans to further decentralize the development of Trisquel? How could the community be involved in a better way? How can the community help you?
Re: [Trisquel-users] I'm leaving Trisquel
@t3g: I don't think that Ruben is giving us some kind of "attitude" here. It's just that he seems to be a bit overwhelmed and, to be honest, I would definitely feel the same if I were the sole maintainer of such an important distribution. It's not like he let's us all wait on purpose. It's just that life keeps people busy... Furthermore, he took the time to answer and even started to fix things already. He wouldn't do that if he wouldn't care for Trisquel. @SalmanMohammadi: Thank you for getting my point. Until recently, I had no idea how to change the way this distribution is maintained while keeping everyone happy at the same time. Maybe a "Trisquel Users Board" can be the solution. However, as it stands for now, Ruben would have to be the one initiating such a board. I don't see any way to solve this without him and I would love to see him working with the community on a more decentralized version of Trisquel. Other people's forking initiatives I've seen here in the past just have the potential to divide us even further, IMHO. @Ruben: What do you say? Does it sound like a plan to you to establish a more decentralized approach (in whatever shape or form)?
Re: [Trisquel-users] I'm leaving Trisquel
Thank you very much for taking the time to respond to this thread and also for taking the time to fix the update scripts again. Well done! Maybe, in this context, I should change the title of this thread to something less intimidating in order to continue to enable a fruitful base for discussions. Does anyone know how I could do that? Even though Ruben has now taken the time to enable updates again, I still don't consider this to be a permanent solution. The time will come when life will throw stones at you again and we'll end up without a maintained distribution again. Wouldn't it be a much better solution to distribute all the workload on different shoulders? That would take a lot of work and responsibility from you, Ruben. Any thoughts how this could be achieved?
Re: [Trisquel-users] I'm leaving Trisquel
Where exactly did I "bitch"? I tried to make a point as politely as possible. If I didn't succeed, I'm sorry as I didn't want to insult anyone. However, I fail to see where exactly I did that. Let's try to keep this on a professional level, please.
Re: [Trisquel-users] I'm leaving Trisquel
It seems like you are getting updates quite often because you enabled some additional repositories. That is, however, unfortunately not true for the rest of us using the default repositories only. My criticism was not about the lack of bleeding edge software. It was all about the lack of very security-critical updates. I also don't want to leave the free software community and maybe I even won't leave these forums, even if some people would like to see me leave. ;-) I just wanted to express my intention to use another GNU/Linux distribution instead of Trisquel. Hopefully, I don't have to if the maintainers resume regular security updates, though.
Re: [Trisquel-users] I'm leaving Trisquel
That's exactly the sentiment SalmanMohammadi was talking about. If all discussion about issues related to the maintainers is silenced by a "stop whining" statement, I don't see any base for enabling constructive criticism.
Re: [Trisquel-users] I'm leaving Trisquel
I disagree. In my opinion security updates should always be provided ASAP, while other features are not as crucial. But maybe that's just me and other people don't need security updates right away.
Re: [Trisquel-users] I'm leaving Trisquel
"Besides, has everyone forgotten how long it took for both Trisquel 6 and Trisquel 7 to be released?" That's a different point. My point mentioned above is that very important security updates are simply not available. This is completely different from delaying the release of a new LTS system.
Re: [Trisquel-users] I'm leaving Trisquel
The last commit made there was 17 days ago. Additionally: How does it help the community to know that the project is active if this information has to be retrieved from some repository instead of "official" channels like blogs, forum posts, etc...? You can't expect community members (especially newbies) to browse repository commits every day just to get some updates. I also know that the project has more than one contributor but as far as I can judge, it seems to be Ruben who is making all decisions about new releases, updates, etc...
Re: [Trisquel-users] I'm leaving Trisquel
I don't agree with this statement. If you think that users should not be the meat of a distribution, why would you go public and advertise it for everyday use? You could explicitly state that you don't want users to use it on their home machines or that you won't provide any support or maintaining efforts if you don't care about them.
Re: [Trisquel-users] I'm leaving Trisquel
You are right, I'm also not in a position to demand anything. It's just very sad that the community is left in the dark about the future of this project.
Re: [Trisquel-users] SiFive come with U500 and E500 Open Source RISC-V SoCs
Nice! Where could I buy one of those?
[Trisquel-users] I'm leaving Trisquel
Hello guys, I have never been a very active member of this community even though I'm very passionate about free software. The main reason for this are time restrictions. As I didn't (and still don't) have too much of time, I was very happy that somebody (i.e. Ruben) filled the gap and maintained this wonderful GNU/Linux distribution. At first sight, it seemed liked a perfect match: Combining the power and variety of available packages of Ubuntu with the spirit of the free software movement. I just loved it and enjoyed it for almost three years. For this experience I would like to express my gratitude. The team behind this distribution was just awesome! But recently, things have changed: This distribution seems to be slowly dying and this is the main reason why I'll be leaving as soon as I get the time to do so. There is NO communication whatsoever with the community. We don't know what's going on; we are not informed about the future plans of the maintainers, there have been NO package updates for months and security-critical bugs just remain open without anyone from the development team commenting. Don't get me wrong, guys: I know it's a lot of work to build such a distribution and keep it running for such a long period of time but unfortunately this is not worth much if you just keep ignoring your community. Maybe some people will now say that I could always check out the IRC channel and ask for information there. Maybe I would get an answer. To those people I would reply (admittedly a bit polemical): Why should the maintainers force the community to ask them for information about any single issue when they just could provide some regular blog posts? AFAIK, Ruben is being paid by the FSF to work full-time on Trisquel. It roughly takes 10 minutes to write a very short "Hey, we're still alive and working on topic X" blog post once a week. I'll be leaving for Debian as they seem to able to provide a libre environment, even though they don't emphasize this aspect too much and even promote proprietary software if necessary. P.S: I don't want the message of this thread to sound too harsh and thus excuse me if the criticism is too direct but IMHO it's much better to directly talk about issues instead of just keeping them sub-surface for a long time. Feel free to ignore this thread if you consider it to be a baseless rant or to enlighten me if you reckon I'm not perceiving things correctly. My hope is that this thread could maybe serve as a wake-up call to the maintainers.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Unable to see mouse pointer without mouse
Surprisingly, the problem seems to be gone now after a simple reboot. I don't really know why; maybe it was a hardware issue...
Re: [Trisquel-users] Unable to see mouse pointer without mouse
Hi Pandya, How did your mouse stop working? Right now, I'm also having some issues with my mouse. Sometimes, a normal click is counted as a double-click and this behavior is really starting to get on my nerves. Maybe this could be related in some way as this bug seems to have been introduced with the recent updates.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Icedove version 38.4.0-1-deb7u1+7.0trisquel2 fails to connect to OpenMailBox.org's IMAP and POP3 servers

You don't even have to compile Bitcoin core as you can just run the pre-compiled binary coming with the package. It runs perfectly fine on my Trisquel machine.
Re: [Trisquel-users] When will we have a Trisquel version for tablets and phones?
Well written, MagicBanana. I just wanted to add that Replicant does have (back-)camera support on the Samsung Galaxy S3.

Will Trisquel also make that switch? If not, why not?
Re: [Trisquel-users] GNU Social desktop client released for GNU/Linux
I really hate to split hairs, but maybe it's a good idea to check the spelling of the English translation first. ;-D It could, for example, rather look like: "GSD is a simple GnuSocial client for GNU/Linux. It is written in C and GTK and has been released as free software (i.e. it respects your freedom!)."

Re: [Trisquel-users] FSF Vision Survey | The Free Software Foundation needs your feedback. Their vision survey is up until the end of January.
In this survey I mentioned that I reckon it's important to stop listing Gnash as a "high priority" project. Flash is a slowly dying technology and the resources spent on developing Gnash can be much better used developing other crucial free software like Replicant, Libreboot, etc...
Re: [Trisquel-users] Icedove version 38.4.0-1-deb7u1+7.0trisquel2 fails to connect to OpenMailBox.org's IMAP and POP3 servers
Thank you so much! That did the trick for me. However, this can only be a temporary workaround and will hopefully be fixed very soon.
Re: [Trisquel-users] FSF Vision Survey | The Free Software Foundation needs your feedback. Their vision survey is up until the end of January.
I completely agree with you that you can't force people to work on other projects. I just wouldn't list Gnash as a high priority project as this probably means the developers are getting some money from the FSF which could be used much better for other projects.

[Trisquel-users] Coreboot Ported To The Librem 13 Laptop, Without Purism
There is some interesting news about the Librem project: "The controversial, crowd-funded Librem laptop that aimed to be fully open down to the firmware but ended up shipping with an AMI UEFI firmware for the initial release has now been ported to Coreboot for the Librem 13 model. The Coreboot support wasn't done by Purism, the company behind the Librem, but rather a Coreboot developer at Google." (https://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item=Coreboot-Hits-The-Librem-13) Please note, that "the port allows for Coreboot to boot the Librem 13 with Coreboot. However, it's not fully-open but relies upon the Intel firmware blobs, as is sadly the case for all recent generations of Intel processors." Thus, there's still no chance to boot these laptops with libreboot
Re: [Trisquel-users] Is there a way to lower the default brightness settings on trisquel?
On my laptop I can just press "Fn" + "Arrow left" or "Arrow right" in order to decrease / increase the brightness. I admit, that wouldn't help with the default brightness but maybe it can help you.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Is this Librem13 fully free this time?
Wow, RISC-V looks indeed like the architecture the free software community has been waiting for. It will take some years to finish this project but it will definitely be a game-changer. I think it would be better to create a separate thread about this topic as this is very important but a bit off-topic on this thread.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel+orca Tutorial/walk-through podcast, ep.4 is up
Guys, I just found something called GNUSpeech: https://www.gnu.org/software/gnuspeech/. "gnuspeech makes it easy to produce high quality computer speech output, design new language databases, and create controlled speech stimuli for psychophysical experiments. gnuspeechsa is a cross-platform module of gnuspeech that allows command line, or application-based speech output." That might be of interest for you even though I'm not sure whether it would be a real competitor to Orca.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel+orca Tutorial/walk-through podcast, ep.4 is up
Oh, okay. I didn't know that. Well, in that case it would really help to test with a total newbie. I know that there is a community for blind GNU/Linux users (http://leb.net/blinux/). That would maybe be a good place to ask.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel+orca Tutorial/walk-through podcast, ep.4 is up
I don't have time to listen to all the episodes but what I've heard sounds really nice. Well done, Dave! :-) Just one question I'm asking myself right now: Would it be possible for a blind person to install Trisquel by just following your podcast and the instructions from the Orca screenreader?

Re: [Trisquel-users] Retrieve pictures from Samsung cellphone
I have given up on waiting for a solution for this issue of establishing a working cable connection between Ubuntu or Trisquel and Android. Thus, I usually just use Airdroid (https://www.airdroid.com/) these days. It just works and I don't have to deal with this buggy mess... On the pro-side I also don't have to install any non-free software on my Trisquel machine as I can just open a web-browser there.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Shocking....!! Micro$0 ft is planning to propose dual-boot with Android OS.
That's exactly what I stated in my post. The Gates Foundation does some good (funding vaccine research for example) and some bad (working with Monsanto for example). Nothing in this world is purely good and nothing is purely bad. Everything has two sides.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Shocking....!! Micro$0 ft is planning to propose dual-boot with Android OS.
I was referring to lembas' comment. Don't get me wrong: I also don't like Windows at all. Otherwise I wouldn't be here. But one has to admit that Microsoft also did some few good things in the recent past (like freeing the .Net platform). And yes, they also did many bad things and they still do. Everything has a good side and a bad side. @Disrespect: What about Bill Gates? Do you also disrespect the way he distributes his money these days (http://www.gatesfoundation.org/)? Here once again: The good side is that he helps funding research for Malaria drugs, the bad side is that he teams up with Monsanto. But this is getting a bit off-topic now...
Re: [Trisquel-users] Shocking....!! Micro$0 ft is planning to propose dual-boot with Android OS.
Come on, people. The company is called "Microsoft" and the operating system is called "Microsoft Windows". Why do people always insist on using malapropisms? It's not that Voldemort founded this company and you are not allowed to say its real name without being punished or anything. Just my 2 cents... @Topic: I also can't see a big threat to Replicant here.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Shocking....!! Micro$0 ft is planning to propose dual-boot with Android OS.
I know the history of GNU/Linux and I know the history of Microsoft. I'm not saying Microsoft was sent from the heavens but I don't see why I have to "hate" something in order to be part of this community. If that's a precondition, however, I might rather look for an alternative. And even if I would hate Microsoft, I would still call it by its correct name. I could come up with some metaphor now but I don't want to fulfill Godwin's law yet.

Well, actually it should work out of the box: https://help.gnome.org/users/gnome-help/stable/keyboard-layouts.html.en Does this problem only occur if you use gedit? Do you have the new layout for other programs?

Great that you managed to save your old computer. :-) Could you maybe post the link to the video for future reference?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Libre Office Not Showing Text
Which driver are you using? From my experience I can tell that the nouveau driver can really be a pain and is very buggy.
Re: [Trisquel-users] How many Lesbian bisexuals, homosexuals and transensuals t are on the Trisquel forum?
Guys, now you are really overdoing it with your criticism of the initial how many women? thread. The initial thread might have contained a stupid question but unfortunately it was a legitimate one as women still are underrepresented in the IT industry worldwide. That's a fact and that is also true for ethnic minorities. I'm not saying (and neither did the OP) that we should discriminate against anyone. It was just a simple question out of interest without (I assume) any deeper thoughts behind it. It really doesn't help too much if you now all pick on this topic and make fun of the OP as it is an important one which needs to be discussed seriously.
Re: [Trisquel-users] The FSF's statement on Windows 10
Stating that the FSF doesn't support Windows 10 is like stating that the NRA supports rifles.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Forex Trading Platform.
Well, the only thing that might be of remote interest to you is GNU Cash (http://www.gnucash.org/). However, I know that this is probably not the solution you are looking for but maybe it can be tweaked a bit in order to make it work for your purposes.

[Trisquel-users] Black screen on Youtube
Hello, I'm using abrowser 39.0 and the Youtube all add-on. Until recently everything was fine and I could watch videos on Youtube all day long. Unfortunately, this is no longer possible. One or two days ago Youtube videos started to only play sound and I can only see a black screen instead of the video content. I didn't change anything and suspect it has something to do with a new Youtube layout. Any ideas or suggestions? Does Youtube work on your machines? Thanks a lot for your help.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Black screen on Youtube
Thanks a lot for your replies. I solved the problem by just disabling the Youtube all add-on. Don't ask me why that worked, though.
