Hello all.
I am new to the free software movement and to libre GNU/Linux and am
giving trisquel a go because I feel it has what I need in an OS. That being
said, I've been trying to figure out how to set the system proxy server. I
can do it in the web browser and in synaptics which
I think that because most people want to be hands off their software, they
just want it to work. They don't personally want to have to go through code
and what-not, that would keep a software industry going. The majority of
folks would gladly pay for free as in free beer software if it is
Thanks. That was it!

Another question. With Windows, I was able to turn off
cleartype/anti-aliasing and have my fonts look crisp and clear. When I turn
it off in GNU/Linux (Trisquel) I cannot find a font that is crisp and clear.
They are kind of off. Are there any legacy Linux fonts maybe that would look
Thank you onpon4, I will give them a try.
I just know that most fonts in Windows look better with anti-aliasing off.
The subpixel rendering blurs the font, looking at fonts pixel by pixel is
crisper and sharper. And anyway to eliminate the blur would be great. I
know that GNU/Linux at
I was curious. Mozilla Firefox is not considered free software because
it has some proprietary things concerning logos, correct?
I would assume this was true also for Mozilla Seamonkey? I am asking because
frankly I despise Firefox-type browsers. I like Seamonkey and all it has to
I would like to say that what Chris said about Dell locking out things
is always true. I don't know Dell's policies and I don't know the background
of his statement but, I just bought the Penguin Wireless-N card for my Dell

Thank you all for the comments, maybe if I get the know how like I would like
to become completely free with my software usage (such as learning to code

So, at work they are deliberating whether to use Chromebooks for going

I got my hands on it and dinked around a bit. I am quite appalled by these
things. It's very sad that Google is using Linux (The Kernal)
Yeah, I remember reading something where Stallman was warning against cloud
computing and Chrome OS and the like. Which I totally agree. Why would I
want to give someone else THAT much control? No thanks. I'll keep my
traditional computer with your hands off of it. We don't want the
I for one will stay away from cloud services because I feel there is too
much at stake with privacy and freedom whether it be Google or Mozilla.
Hello all,
I was wondering if anyone else used this add-on with Abrowser. I have
it installed, but it won't hide any elements. It places the blocks in
Adblock but doesn't actually block them.
Any suggestions?
Grimlok
I figured it out, apparently it was disabled... Sometimes, the obvious is
what you over look.
Thanks all!
Luis,
If it is an Intel-based chipset you may be able to go into the BIOS and
disable the SpeedStep option which should take care of it. The only thing
about this is say good bye to battery life.

Just an update on this. I did some digging around and found a solution to
the anti-aliasing problem I have (Problem being that I hate ant-aliasing and
having blurry fonts) Anyways, I found that if you go to (System Settings -
Advanced Settings - Fonts) and turn off (Hinting) and

Hello all again,
I have been looking into trying to change my login theme, and maybe even
adding some shell themes to trisquel, the only thing is that it doesn't seem
to be the easy drag and drop of Ubuntu and the rest of Gnome... Is there
something I have to install, a different

I was hoping to be able to take themes I found on the internet and install

I just thought I would share with you what I've been doing with my UI.

I will have to try minetest out. I am planning on changing the icons also to
reflect my OS more also. I enjoy pixel-art icons so I don't think that the
old OS's are necessarily ugly.
:-p
Here's my pidgin icon I made.
Hey all,
What do you all think about proprietary companies that have been
beneficial to the free software movement like id software? I know there are
some who are using free software for malicious means like Microsloth and

Hello all,
The other day I tried to get rid of LibreOffice and install OpenOffice

So I removed LibreOffice using Synaptic, but when I went to install

The Dell Latitude ST actually runs Trisquel GNU/Linux pretty well. The only
thing I had trouble with was getting the auto rotate to work. On-screen
keyboard and other things seemed to function just fine. It even supports
wifi cababilities using the free drivers provided by Trisquel
Yeah, I guess I could do that, when I get a chance I will do it.
I for one would love to see Winamp become free software. Then it can be
ported to GNU/Linux!
Hey all,
Is it possible to install Trisquel without an internet connection? I am
installing in text mode, and it says that it needs to have an internet
connection. This computer does not have an ethernet card in it.
Thanks,
GrimLok
There doesn't seem to be an option not to use it though.
I made it from my current installation from the iso using startup disk
creator.
Hmm... do you think maybe searching for the way to do it in Ubuntu may work?
The graphical installer hangs up and just gives me a blank screen, I figured
the text installer would tell me why. Plus, I like the traditional
installers anyways. I just don't understand why it defaults to going out to
the internet to get installation files. That is a flaw to me. If you

I have thought this way about Stallman, but more on the lines of freedom in

like he believes in freedom only as far as it suits himself, but would be
willing to see it taken away from others if it goes against his
I try to see past that because of all the good he has done to advance freedom

Freedom imposed on others is not freedom. Freedom is only freedom if you
have a choice in the matter. Freedom to succeed, freedom to fail. So
Communism, and Socialism do not lead to freedom, they only lead to
oppression, history has proven this time and time again. We are seeing this
Maybe a way to help this, is to have a new area for such debate.

I have a Dell Latitude 6430u that I use to run Trisquel, and was able to buy

For a Dell Latitude D620, I would assume you would need either the

This is exciting news. Trisquel has been the first Linux I have used
exclusively. I have used it now for over a year, and have thoroughly enjoyed
it. I have been able to use it for all things that I do, including work,
which is a Windows networking environment.
I am anxious to try this
Pardon me, GNU/Linux. This was a slip. :-o
My mistake, I copied the wrong one. I meant to copy the one above it.
Looks good all! I am excited to download the newest Trisquel and install it!
Your's doesn't seem pixellated, looks like a lot of sub-pixel rendering going
on there. Here's what it looks like without it, if this is the effect you
were hoping for. Though I am running Trisquel 6...

Hello all,

Ok, well if a 49 year old is embryonic, I don't want to know what my 31 year

They should be an extension of learning though, not the main event.
I agree with fr33dom,
We should shy away from cloud-based computing because by promoting it, we are
promoting the control over others. Setting up one's own server and own
personal cloud is a way to fight this.

Thanks for posting, there are a few things on there that I have done, that I

comprehensive documentation of the customizations I do like this.
Kudos to you fchmmr!

Hey all,
I just wanted to let you all know of my first successful set up of
Trisquel 7 for a friend of mine. He gave me a Dell Inspiron 1520 that had no
OS on it and asked me if I could load Chromium or GNU/Linux, so I opted for
Trisquel GNU/Linux of course.

Trust me, this fella has heard enough of the free software speeches from

When I cannot find a package in the repositories that I want to install I go
to the Debian package search and look for that software as a debian package.
Here is KompoZer's: https://packages.debian.org/squeeze/kompozer
Once there I select a download that corresponds to my architecture. e.g.
Here's mine.. :-D
It IS stable... but probably MORE stable than Windows. :-D
No... I like it the way it is :-p
I will give it a shot, but I don't think it's quite the same problem. I
don't see any access points/routers no matter where I am with the laptop (I
took it to work too to give it a try.)...
I get 'No scan results' upon doing that command Chris. Not sure what's going
on...
Also, not sure if I mentioned it. If I set the SSID manually, that doesn't
work either.
I did find something about madwifi drivers, but are they proprietary or are
they just all together irrelevant?
Hello all,
I was given a Toshiba laptop today for work I did on another laptop and
decided to see how it ran Trisquel GNU/Linux. Much to my surprise it seems
to be able to support Trisquel nearly completely because it has the Qualcomm
Atheros AR242x / AR542x chipset.
It had said
Well, restarting has re-enabled it, but the card still doesn't seem to be
able to find my wifi network...
First off, thank you all for your help troubleshooting this matter.
I have found out the problem, and it's one of those things that keep you as a
computer technician humble. I found a physical switch on the front of the
laptop for Wifi... That was apparently not switched on. :: face palm
So I got tired of dealing with the new GNOME and ended up going with XFCE to
get the results I want. Had to play around with some things but it's getting
there. Screenshot attached.
Thanks everyone!

I am fine with the xfwm really, I just want to make it do what I want it to

What would that do?
Hello all,
I decided to spank out gdm and replace it with WINGs Display Manager to
give my experience a more classic look. The only thing is, for some reason
it doesn't seem to be loading automatically. When I boot I get the trisquel
splash screen, and then I see a login in a
Yeah, I did a direct upgrade from Trisquel 6, so I think it kept gdm from
that. I could be wrong though. All I know, is when I booted up after the
upgrade I still was running gdm.
Hello all,
I was wondering, for those of you who have some XFCE experience, if
there was a way to make XFCE's window manager open each new window side by
side instead of directly on top of each other. I would even go for a
cascading effect if that's all I could do.
Note: The
Yeah I have run that. That's what lead me to removing gdm all together. I
now only have wdm on my laptop, but it still doesn't want to load unless I
load it. During startup, I can see that it does try to start, but it never
goes through with it.
I would prefer neither. Why cut down trees, possibly fill in marshlands, and
give up wonderful farm-land so that people can watch the newest episode of
Keeping up with the Kardashians!?
I haven't seen the land myself, so I don't know exactly, but we are a very
rural area, and most of it is populated by Marshlands, Farmlands, and water.
For 900 Acres to be populated with a solar far, the only assumption I can
come up with is that those types of lands will be used. Now, it
I have a DM that I would like to use, which is WINGs DM or WDM, the problem
isn't that. I want to find out why it's not starting and why I have to start
it manually.
Thanks though.
So, I just found out that Amazon is building a HUGE, like 900 Acre solar farm
where I live, and it serves only to power their data center... How

Is there anything I can do to put a wrench in this?

I'm not sure about Chromium, but where I work, both Chrome and Firefox are

Here is my new set up, I decided to mix old with new, I plan on re-doing all

it was already blue.
