Re: [Trisquel-users] mind map software absent from the repo
Thanks destinationunknown! I installed treesheets from the terminal. Strangely, I can't find the program in my Trisquel Mini menu. I opened Tree Sheets by entering "treesheets" in the terminal. I'm going to give this program a try and am optimistic about it! Do you know how to add a shortcut to the menu system?

Re: [Trisquel-users] [Brother HL-L2320D]: Printer Does Not Install
Hi destinationunknown, I'm looking for a laser printer and found the Brother HL-L2300D through H-Node. The L2300D is not available in southern Ontario, Canada, as far as I can tell. I found that the HL-L2320 is available for purchase in my town! I'm worried about purchasing the HL-L2320 and then having to sink a lot of time into getting it to work, and am afraid about it's usability being finicky. Do you recommend this printer? Is it tedious to get working?

Thanks for noticing that for me (I didn't!) Maybe it's from using Audacity to edit and export a long audio file. It's owrrying that it didn't clean itslef up afterward (if that's what it was). I'll keep your sudo apt-get clean command handy for the future; thank you.
Re: [Trisquel-users] how do I increase the available space for this part of my harddrive?
I wonder whether this is how Trisquel Mini did it by default? I've used Trisquel Mini until now, have never had this problem, and am thinking about going back to Mini. Thanks for the idea; I'll try and implement it one way (Trisquel Mini default hopefully?) or another
Re: [Trisquel-users] boot-up USB memory card not working ...
The T400 let me boot Trisquel from my USB-port CD/DVD drive. The problem really must be the flash memory itself and not the USB port. Maybe Think Penguin or some other company would sell compatible USB memory cards once there are enough Libreboot and Coreboot computers out there to create demand.

Can I get Compiz, with its special graphical effects for the desktop, on Trisquel 8? Is there a GUI to turn on/off particular effects like there was on Ubuntu when I tried that OS years ago? [Trisquel-users] boot-up USB memory card not working ...
Hi, I have a librebooted Thinkpad T400 laptop computer and I can't seem to get it to boot from USB memory. I've tried to run and install a fresh OS on this computer a few times over the two years or so that I've had it. I have probably tried creating those USB drives on both Windows and Trisquel Mini over the course of that time so I think that the problem (?) might be with my computer or my actions rather than my bootable Trisquel USB memory card. Thanks Borski. That sounds interesting! I'm gonna focus on i3 for a little while and will probably give your idea when I get curious again in the future. I'm not a sysadmin/programmer by the way … but if I learn some things by trying this out for fun, that would be pretty cool!

Re: [Trisquel-users] an observation about YouTube
IE would have to support full screen for the JavaScript video player to take advantage of it? I know almost nothing about coding so I'll defer to your guess. It also seems most likely because it would be pretty bold of YouTube/Google to cut out Microsoft, right?
Re: [Trisquel-users] an observation about YouTube
If you're right, is YouTube's decision contrary to net neutrality? They're not throttling by speed; they're throttling features. This is assuming that there isn't some other explanation, of course. Net Neutrality: "the idea, principle, or requirement that Internet service providers should or must treat all Internet data as the same regardless of its kind, source, or destination" https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/net%20neutrality By the way thanks for the link
Re: [Trisquel-users] an observation about YouTube
I think that it's worth having this kind of discussion. I didn't ask for help to use YouTube, IE, etc. I just wanted to talk about whether Youtube/Google might give its web browser preferential treatment via YouTube. And what the boundaries are, if there are any here.
[Trisquel-users] an observation about YouTube
Today I opened YouTube in Internet Explorer on a Microsoft Windows Vista computer. The "full screen" button in YouTube's JavaScript (?) video player was greyed out, and I couldn't watch videos in full screen mode. At the top of the website, a narrow banner recommended Google Chrome. Is there a reason that Google/YouTube won't do full-screen video in Internet Explorer? I wondered whether Youtube/Google was diminishing compatibility with their competitors' web browsers to give their own web browser an advantage in the market. Maybe the full-screen button was greyed out because I did something wrong, maybe something to do with Vista not being supported any more (is it?), or maybe there's some other reason for YouTube's lesser functionality on Internet Explorer. Any thoughts? Has this happend with others' Internet Explorer, Safari, Firefox, etc? Are there laws (which countries/etc?) that restrict or prohibit preferential treatment like this might be? Although not exactly the same, it reminds me of Microsoft's HTML situation: https://www.theregister.co.uk/2009/03/17/opera_ceo_microsoft/

[Trisquel-users] photo/video gallery for server
Any recommendations on a photo/video gallery to host images and videos that I might share on GNU Social? Right! The web browser superimposes a file path and print date on the prints. I have no reason to think that Okular will do that too though; will give it a try.

Although I can fill in and save with most of those PDF forms (with Okular), people who use Adobe reader to open my saved work cannot see my entries in those forms.

Re: [Trisquel-users] how to save these documents in a free format
Form 13A says (instead of showing the form) "The document you are trying to load requires Adobe Reader 8 or higher. You may not have the Adobe Reader installed or your viewing environment may not be properly configured to use Adobe Reader. For more information on how to install Adobe Reader andconfigure your viewing environment please see [URL]" This is probably why I thought that all of the forms were not free/neutral for a while before I posted this topic. Not sure yet whether Form 13 A is the only one like this.
Re: [Trisquel-users] how to save these documents in a free format
Thanks again Onpon Although my version says that forms are not supported, it seems to work. I'll fill one in and try to open it on one or two different computers to make sure it's okay. Have a great weekend, M
Re: [Trisquel-users] how to save these documents in a free format
Okular gives me a caution "This document has XFA forms, which are currently unsupported."; I attached a picture. Did you get this message onpon? I'll try out some forms with Okular now.
Re: [Trisquel-users] how to save these documents in a free format
I assumed (wrongly ... I see!) that the PDFs were non-standard because i had trouble working with them in Trisquel. I'll try Okular -- thanks for the suggestion. I really hope that Okular lets me save the info that I type into those forms. Thanks onpon!
[Trisquel-users] how to save these documents in a free format
Here's a list of documents in non-standard PDF and Microsoft Word with macros. Is there a way to make the forms work properly in freedom? http://ontariocourtforms.on.ca/en/family-law-rules-forms/ The word processor forms are more useful to me than the PDFs. [Trisquel-users] email clients
My email inbox has limited memory. I would like to set my email client to download (and then delete from server) emails that are older than ... say ... 10 months. I use Sylpheed with IMAP right now; willing to change to a different email client if another client can help me manage my inbox better. If I change computers, will I need to import the emails to Sylpheed (or Thunderbird, etc) specifically or can I pick up and continue with a different email client? Once old emails are downloaded (say with Sylpheed), can I identify and view emails with a text editor or word processor? I guess that there's no advantage to being able to open emails with a text editor if I can import those email files to a new email client right? Also let's say that one day I decide to learn how to use encrypted email. Does Sylpheed support this? Is there an email client that's easier or better for encrypted email than others?

It's not worth making your parents worry about you. I disagree with their thought process. But if they genuinely believe it and you help this guy, then they will worry.
Re: [Trisquel-users] email clients
Thanks MB! I installed Evolution and it already had the IMAP info for my two email accounts. I probably used Evolution a year or two ago and uninstalled it in favour of Sylpheed. I clicked on "Send/Receive" and it's updating now; one of those accounts will probably take a few hours. I see "On This Computer" on the left side panel. I'll make one folder for each account, and drag and drop my emails to the respective folders. Hopefully that stores the old emails on my computer, and removes them from the two servers. After this I'll give the encrypted email a try -- thanks for offering to help me with that too
[Trisquel-users] OwnCloud and Trisquel
I got OwnCloud working on my server service. I would like to identify particular files on my laptop, so that I can edit them with OwnCloud (-->LibreOffice) on my phone. For Trisquel, will OwnCloud work properly with Trisquel Mini 7, or should I use standard Trisquel 7? Will the new Trisquel work with OwnCloud? I don't know whether lxde, gnome, or mate will make any difference in whether OwnCloud works properly.

Re: [Trisquel-users] GNU won't let Libreboot leave. Ruben mentioned again in statement for his involvement.
If society (where this happened) decided that the alleged bad behaviour warrants accountability, then the complainant can identify her forum and start that process. If there's a civil claim then both sides would have the discovery process. If an administrative tribunal complaint, the tribunal might have some process to ensure fairness too. If criminal then the he's alone against the state and to balance that he wouldn't have to say anything at all. But right now it's an accusation outside of any defined processes. Yet there might still be consequences. If he responds, is it possible that his response could fuel more comments about this on the Internet?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Libreboot leaves FSF. Says FSF shouldn't exist anymore.
"For me, Leah's story about the ex-employee rings true as I can imagine folks being hateful and ignorant in situations like that. IT HAPPENS at every workplace. I think this is the reason it potentially rings true to all of you as well, either because you've seen this kind of discrimination (sexism, transphobia, misogyny, racism, classism, etc...) yourself or you've done it yourself." Just because something happens generally, doesn't make it right to attribute that social dynamic to the individual accused people in this situation.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Libreboot leaves FSF. Says FSF shouldn't exist anymore.
It's patronizing and maybe unfair to attribute Leah's comments to "problems" (personal, mental health, whatever), I think. I agree with you in principle though ... everyone has problems and goes through difficult times. Great, now I'm patronizing and unfair too. Leah's allegation is more a conclusion than her version of the facts (I only know what I read in this topic). There's nothing substantive for the FSF to respond to. It doesn't tell us much that the FSF's conclusion is the opposite of Leah's, except that it is the opposite of Leah's. I can't help but wonder whether there is more to this story.

Thanks again Luke. I appreciate your thought process for sourcing parts. I hope that I can make Parabola work; I will think about whether to choose Parabola or Debian (if Debian, I will install the RMS program on my own). I will need Microsoft and Adobe for work, and will use a different computer when I need their programs. I hope that the developers of programs like Parabola (and Trisquel) gather enough of a following to run successful businesses on their work. The volunteer aspect is cool, but like you said our community can only count on that so much.

Re: [Trisquel-users] The future of Libre Computing: Crowd Funding Campaign Starts Now
Sorry for all the questions -- and thanks for taking the time to answer ... just a few more from me For the laptop, does the LCD connect to the Computer Card via a LVDS? Will your business sell different LCD screens (perhaps higher res, perhaps just replacement screens) in the future that we can buy and swap in to the current laptop body (perhaps with a case mod, perhaps not)? Will your business sell replacement keyboards, batteries, wiring, battery controllers(?), etc? Is Parabola appropriate if I want a stable, reliable OS to use for work? I have heard over the years that Parabola is for advanced computers and that people who use Parabola must regularly fix bugs because Parabola gets all the newest updates. I am fairly novice and won't have time to learn how to fix bugs ... reliability is really important to me. Would Debian be safer in this regard? How can I use Debian while sticking with Trisquel's principles?
