Just installed dillo and it is pretty good. I think I'll probably migrate to
using it for most of my browsing. I used to have ublock installed, but I just
got tired of everything being so slow so I just removed it and librejs and
disabled javascript. The only extensions I have are
>lightweight software such as lxde and vlc
I can agree completely on LXDE but VLC is everything but lightweight.. :P
Mpv for the WIN. Mplayer for the superwin on very old hardware. \o/
Uh oh.
See this classic article about why rewriting an app from scratch is nearly
always a disastrous idea:

Then again, if I recall correctly, that guy predicted that the iPhone would
be a flop. Strange that
Isn't it better to download it using torrent?
I've always used torrent, never wanted nor tried to get used to streaming, so
this issue you raised never really bothered me.
Ok, this is good to know! Hopefully, this new version will make it into
Icecat before too long :-)
I couldn't agree with this more, usename343. There can be no possible
justification for Firefox/Icecat sucking up half of my real RAM when there is
only one webpage open, JS or no JS. Someone seriously needs to dig into the
source and see what that thing is doing - its memory management is a

Isn't abrowser based on firefox?
I will have to agree with that. I also try to find lightweight software such
as lxde and vlc, etc... but when it came to browsing the best thing I found
was icecat (firefox) so I just had to suck it up and use it. It always
bothers me when I open up system monitor and it says it is using 500
Of course, i use transmission for torrents and also amule (an edk client)
For me,
Movie/TV Shows Streaming = Kodi
Downloading = youtube-dl or classic torrent clients.
You can also combine youtube-dl with mpv, good solution to avoid websites
crapware.
What about the Abrowser? the default in Trisquel. It seems to me much faster
than FF. Yes it has some problems but workarounds exist most of the time.
> Have you tried Trisquel's default client, Transmission? There is not much
to learn..
Have you tried the gold of the gold, aka 'rtorrent'?
There is very little to learn but once you do you never go back :)
>I think the problem with the internet in general is all the hi-def crap that
every website tries to ram down your throat
Notice I actually have javacript disabled all the time and the only website I
allow on my computer is my diaspora pod. Disabling javascript will make your

I tried a US DVD and that seems to play fine on Totem.
However, I installed the libdvdcss package and I still seem to be having
trouble playing region 2 DVDs. They don't work in Totem and if I try to play
them in mpv, it seems to decode some of the CSS keys, but then says 'Failed

Okay, then what is aMule better for than transmission? and I haven't (but I
will) used transmission.
Thanks Magic Banana. I have another question though: is this still be subject
to DVD region restrictions? I have a few UK DVDs (region 2) and they don't
seem to be playing using Totem on my US Trisquel laptop.
Thanks for all the comments, this is an interesting read. Tbh, I think I'll
just stick to DVDs for now ;)
Which moves on nicely to my next question: what program is best for watching
DVDs?
I'm using Icecat on Trisquel and it seems tolerable, but not exactly speedy.
I haven't tried ublock origin (unless it's made it downstream into the
Trisquel version of Icecat).
>What do you use to browse the web? (I use Icecat.)
I'm actually very frustrated lately with browsers. I like links2 and dillo
for reading text. I used to run seamonkey but the latest versions of it (both
the stable one and the nighty nightly builds don't work good for me anymore
and it
Hi Alij
I'll add amule to my list of learning how to operate; I want a full featured
torrent, thanks for sharing!

otherwise i use bittorrents or free movies on archive.org, vimeo or youtube.
nothing fancy.
"Mozilla Bloatafox is for browsing the web"
What do you use to browse the web? (I use Icecat.)
>I haven't seen a movie or tv show in years and I don't miss them.
You don't miss much as most of them is pure crap.
OP: you mentioned Popcorn Time. I used to love it but then I realized it is
as a boated option for streaming torrents as Mozilla Bloatafox is for
browsing the web.
I love
I haven't seen a movie or tv show in years and I don't miss them.
The new rules are in place to benefit a few narrow interests, at some point
you have to decide when you have had too much intrusive dictates from the
kakistocracy.
I am amazed at how many activities became available when I

Well, but if I'm using something like torrents or Popcorn Time, then I'm
going to be seeding the files for other people, so technically that could be
illegal, right? I'm not
Technically, it isn't against the law, to watch online. DMCA punishes the

MY thoughts on this are simple: do what you got to do, to avoid DRM.
Also, those websites are notorius for trying to censor, and spying on their
customers...
I wouldn't hesitate
So, it seems that services such as Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hulu, etc. are not
compatible with free software, because they employ DRM and require non-free
software to run (unless I misunderstand)?
In that case, is there any alternative movie streaming/download service that
is both legal and
