I think the same used to happen to me. The problem was shown after mounting a samba shared folder, suspend, resume and then trying to open nautilus. Could it be the same what is happening to you? In that case just remember to eject the smb folder before going to suspend.

How will people be watching this? I've tried watching youtube live with vlc but the most I ever get is about ten seconds before it crashes. My internet is pretty slow, about 3mb download. Messed with the settings but it always seems to pick the highest resolution which can't help.

Looks like the flashrom package might come handy. Just install the package and fire away I believe. Note that you don't want to run out of power while the update is taking place or you risk bricking your box. I remember doing a BIOS update in my former life to enable larger hard disks.
