I tried http://jenkins.trisquel.info/makeiso/iso/trisquel_8.0_amd64.iso
(released last Saturday).
For some reason, Trisquel 7's Startup Disk Creator could not install it (with
permanent storage, I have not tried without) on a USB key: it aborts in the
middle with an error about insufficient

It is not. They are equivalent, only the philosophy behind it changes, which
doesn't have any impact at all on the very nature of the specific software.
Only the quality of the code makes software better or worse

Is there any possibility the bootloader might have loaded the wireless card's

We say "GNU slash Linux" or "GNU plus Linux" here.
If you do not trust the upgrade, do a fresh install on top of one of the
system on the internal drive (specify the same partition for / and the same
partition for /home but do *not* ask for formatting the latter)... and get
rid of all the other systems.
"It's firmware, not drivers."
OK, I'm a little unclear on this. My understanding is that firmware is
software permanently burned onto chip on the hardware (eg BIOS), while
drivers are software parts of the OS that allow the kernel to communicate
with (and thus "drive") the hardware. I furth
Firmware is software that is not executed on the CPU but on peripheral
processors. That software is not always "burned onto chip on the hardware":
the kernel can send it to the peripheral. It is a binary but the
corresponding source code may be available under the terms of a free license.
Where would be that firmware? Would it be part of the UEFI? I thought the
firmware was a binary that the kernel sends to the Wifi card for execution.

Are you using the amd64 or i686 version of the .ISO? When I tried to boot on
my wife's Mac I was using the USB I made for my AA1 using the i686 version.
Let me know if I need to be using the amd64 version, otherwise I'll download
the more recent i686 RC and try
Off-topic, but I notice there are now a number of libre distros that aren't

BLAG was a nice distribution. Not for masochists. I used it for some months

Don't you have a live system you could boot and do your urgent homework in?

I need to here remind Patrick once if you dnt want systemd you need to
instead install Parabola, Devuan, Hyperbola, which I need to admit that
systemd is quite complicated to config, with Parabola, Devuan, Hyperbola you
will have a simple and modern init system named OpenRC under FreeBSD lice
If Patrick is ok to a rolling system Parabola/OpenRC is also recommended to
him that’s rolling and nosystemd, otherwise please stick to Devuan and
Hyperbola those are LTS and nosystemd. I use both of Parabola/OpenRC, Devuan,
Hyperbola which I’m easy going alongside rolling and LTS systems. :)
Ah, I see. Thanks for the clarification MagicBanana. So what is a "driver",
and how does it differ from this definition of firmware? Or am I trying to
import irrelevant an abstraction from my Windows years into a GNU-Linux
system where it has no meaning?
