[fsck] Terminals
Hi all, I've been using Linux for almost 8 years now, but I've recently discovered a longing for a Windows tool. Hyperterm has some features like capturing the screen and built in file transfer that I'd like to see in a Linux terminal. I can get some things from minicom, but what I really want is a terminal program that does telnet, ssh, serial and possibly tn5250 (IBM iSeries) along with text capture and file transfers. I've done some searching on Freshmeat and Google and haven't found what I'm wanting. Anyone have suggestions on ones to try? [tslug] Re: Good Distros...
Justin, I've been happy with Mandrake 10.0 and Fedora Core 2. Both become even better when you add apt for rpm repositories like the penguin liberation front that package some programs that the distributions can't really touch due to legalities. For servers and other important boxes, I'm still a Debian supporter although now that my company pays for it I also use Red Hat Enterprise Server. [tslug] Re: Red Hat Desktop
Well I like the idea, but for a IT staff with as much technical background as Truman's, it would probably be cheaper (and thus a better ROI) to use a different distribution like perhaps Knoppix or CollegeLinux tweaked for the campus. One thing that I am championing currently in my company is the use of antiquated equipment with PXES linux (pxes.sf.net) to boot them as thin clients to a central citrix server. A 200Mhz machine with 64MB of RAM and no hard drive suddenly becomes just as good for your average user as a machine 10 times the size. The goal is to try to coalesce the incredible interest and passion in open-source software and related issues into a political movement-- to spur more kids to make groups like yours and to start campaigns to get colleges and universities to switch to open-source software. We'd also like to bring in some of the politics around filesahring, copyright, and other issues-- the lawrence lessig side of things. [tslug] Re: Cobol
The biggest thing holding back Linux in the enterprise when it comes to replacing big iron is that it's biggest proponent also sells the AS/400s that cost $50,000 and are worth $5,000 once you open the crate (I'm not exagerating much on this, our accountants hate the depreciation on our AS/400). Our shop is 99.999% COBOL and RPG(no not DD). One thing that irks me about this fact is that the programs running on the AS/400 are generally buggier than even Microsoft code because (no offense to the older programmers on this list), most of the COBOL coders are set in the mindset of how programming was done 20 years ago. Error handling? Oh you mean having a 24/7 computer operator to tell the program to ignore bad data when it crashes because of it. A good modern programmer with COBOL knowledge can be pretty well set in the job market right now. Yes I agree that Linux is cool, its the best, and it's going to kick Microsoft where Bill needs to be kicked. But, as IBM realized, that the Linux community is started to, interaction with legacy large scale systems is a requirement for the success of Linux. One difference is that while 2.4.0 took about 7 months from the pre1 to the final release, I hope (and believe) that we have fewer issues facing us in the current 2.6.0. But very obviously there are going to be a few test-releases before the real thing. The point of the test versions is to make more people realize that they need testing and get some straggling developers realizing that it's too late to worry about the next big feature. I'm hoping that Linux vendors will start offering the test kernels as installation alternatives, and do things like make upgrade internal machines, so that when the real 2.6.0 does happen, we're all set. [tslug] Re: Network security policies
Bill, Group policy is a nightmare to say the least. I'm not sure your budgetary constraints, but my company has adopted using Altiris' products. One of these allows you very good control over what a PC can and can not do. I'd recommend looking at them. Also being a Novell shop, Altiris works well with Novell being that its founder came from Novell. On Thu, Jun 26, 2003 at 10:05:29AM -0500, Bill Sawyer wrote: I work for a fairly large business here at home, and I've been asked to draft a proposal for new security policies at work. Due (unsurprisingly) to the budget constraints of our corporate structure, we operate in a very, well...obsolete environment. The network is built around a Novell 4.11 server, has two NT servers running (one with ADP for payroll, the other with MS SQL 7, neither configured in any type of domain structure), and mostly Windows 95a clients, though we do have a number of Windows 98SE and Windows 2000 machines. What I need to do is basically threefold: (1) Design a way to manage interoperability at the login level (ie, login scripts and group policies) (2) Manage system policies to prevent users from destroying their systems (3) Use available and/or freely available tools. Though I'm doing my own research, I wanted to toss this one out to all of you for ideas. And yes, before you guys ask, the suggestions update everything to 2000, or, more optimally ditch MS and switch to Linux or Unix have been shot down. I know somebody did a Capstone this past semester on securing Windows 95, and I regretted even at the time not being able to attend. If the presenter or someone else could provide me with any sort of handouts or slideshows from the presentation, that would certainly make my job easier. Any other insight or assistance is welcome. [tslug] Re: Mandrake 9.1 isos
You all might try bittorrent too. It's awesome at getting ISOs, they have the newest Mandrake and RedHat ISOs available. The program is available on Freshmeat and it even automatically confirms md5sums for you. There is also a windows version for people that need the isos before ditching Windows. [tslug] PXE, Etherboot, and Frustration
I'm hoping that someone out here knows a bit more about PXE and Etherboot than I do. I've got a group of Dell OptiPlex Gn+'s that have built in 3Com Parallel Tasking LAN ports that are supposedly some varient of the 3c90x series of cards. Unfortunately Dell's BIOS for these machines does not support PXE. I figured I'd give an Etherboot boot floppy from www.rom-o-matic.net a shot. Well the floppy boots and says that it recognizes the card, even to the point of displaying the MAC address, but it never gets a PXE/DHCP offer. Sometimes it complains of packet fragmentation, but most of the time it just sits there and puts dots on the screen. I know that my PXE server works because my newer clients can boot PXE just fine. Does anyone have any tips for making this setup work? In case you're wondering, we're trying to have a magical floppy that we can put in these machines to turn them into PXES (http://pxes.sourceforge.net) thin clients so that they can be brought out of storage for temps and interns. [tslug] Re: Testing 2.5
I'm glad to see that a brave new soul has taken on my old role of being overly anxious to test kernels. I hope that filesystem corruptions and the like do not plague you like they did me in the 2.3.x series of kernels. I would suggest partimage as a good way to backup your system prior to experimenting. I know I sound cynical, but there's a reason that kernel hackers have a development box to run development kernels on. I'd check to make sure that your CD-R is big enough. I've noticed that the new Mandrake ISO's don't fit on 650MB discs. That is the amount of budget cut the University will absorb again next year at a minimum. Now there may be additional cuts in state funding. The University was only able to off-set the $6 million cut next year by about 1/3 with the tuition increase and has already planned to absorb the other 2/3rds by leaving positions vacant, cutting operational budgets, freezing equipment expenses, and dipping into University emergency reserves. The additional $3 million cut this fiscal year (2001-2002 academic year) will force the University to look at furloughing staff (mandatory unpaid leave in June) and asking administrators to work without pay. Some of this could be avoided if the state legislature would approve use of the Rainy Day Fund for some of the budget shortfall. The Republicans in the Legislature have voted against it, while the Senate voted in support of using the Rainy Day Fund. Our local representative, Bob Behnen, voted with the Republicans against using the Rainy Day Fund. This will have serious consequences for Truman, Kirksville, and Adair County. MICROSOFT SENIOR VICE-PRESIDENT CRAIG MUNDIE TO SPEAK AT O'REILLY OPEN SOURCE CONVENTION Microsoft Senior Vice President Craig Mundie set off a far-reaching debate recently when he introduced Microsoft's Shared Source program, which blends access to source code with the preservation of strong intellectual property rights by software developers, and contrasted Shared Source to Open Source and the GNU Public License. There's been a strong response from the open source and free software communities, accusing Microsoft of trying to co-opt the momentum of open source with a program that offers superficial similarities, but few of the real benefits. Microsoft counters that they are trying to find a balance between the needs of commercial developers and the lessons learned from the open source movement. We think that this is a debate worth having, says Tim O'Reilly. Chicago law professor Cass Sunstein's book 'Republic.com' makes the case that when people talk only to those who already agree with them, their views become more extreme, but when they engage with those of opposite views, both sides move towards the middle. The best way for the open source community to change Microsoft's business practices is to engage them in serious conversation, not just criticize them from a distance. At the O'Reilly Open Source Convention on July 26th, Craig Mundie will discuss ways in which Shared Source differs from Open Source, and why Microsoft believes that the Shared Source Philosophy supports a strong software business case for commercial software developers and their customers. Red Hat CTO Michael Tiemann will then make the case for open source. His speech will be followed by a panel discussion with Tiemann, Mundie, and other experts on intellectual property and the software industry. The panel will be moderated by Tim O'Reilly. About the O'Reilly Open Source Convention: The 3rd annual O'Reilly Open Source Convention will be held July 23-27, 2001, at the Waterfront Sheraton Hotel and Marina in San Diego, California. This year's expanded convention includes over 250 sessions in 14 tracks on key open source technologies such as Perl, Apache, XML, Python, PHP, MySQL, Linux, and many more. The convention will attract over 2000 hardcore system administrators, programmers, and Web developers, who join the leaders of the critical open source technologies to learn how to understand, code, and manage these powerful tools. Held in conjunction with the Open Source Convention, the O'Reilly Summit on Open Source Strategies, organized by O'Reilly Research, brings together technology leaders from open source companies along with executives (CTOs, CIOs, CEOs) from leading companies that use open source software for strategic advantage.
