On May 4, 9:58 am, PGage pga...@gmail.com wrote: The interviews are regularly the best part of his show (and I love the rest of this show). One of things I like about it is that, even while staying in his stupid conservative guy character, he makes it look like a genuine conversation between intelligent people. Yet he also regularly manages to end these short exchanges on a real exit line. The nature of most of the conversations, on both sides, makes me think it is unscripted and unrehearsed, yet the high percentage of too good to be true exit lines makes me think that somehow he has given many of his guests a head's up about the last question he is going to ask so they can wind it up. Do we know anything about this? I don't disagree about the exit lines, but I thought Warren in particular had a look of thoughtful surprise on her face before she gave the answer that would be hard for a non-professional (or even a lot of professionals) to fake, especially if she was delivering a line she'd been fed. My guess is that Colbert's improv training makes him especially sensitive to listening to his guests and setting them up with potential straight lines. When the guest is smart enough to take the cue, he gets the effect he's after. And for every guest like Warren, there are duds like the Salt Institute lady who think they're there to deliver the funny, rather than let Colbert do the heavy lifting. --Dave Sikula -- TV or Not TV The Smartest (TV) People! And you are right about people like the Salt Lady - although that has its own kind of entertainment value. It was really funny because she was so polished and PR professional, and the opposing guy was kind of nebbish, yet he played his role on the show just right, and she was so awkward. At least she got her food police line in about three times. Actually, she is an even better case in point than I first thought, since she clearly had some kind of prepared exit line for her segment that she was trying to set herself up for, but she inadvertently said or did something in her set up (I am forgetting what now) that Colbert thought was a good exit line and he wrapped it up just as she was inhaling to deliver her prepared line. -- TV or Not TV The Smartest (TV) People! [TV orNotTV] Wingnutty Cincy Radio Guy to Host Tribune TV Gabber
Bill Cunningham of Cincy's The Big One WLW, who got national attention during the 2008 campaign by saying 'BARACK HUSSEIN OBAMA several times in a speech at a GOP rally, is shooting a talk show pilot in Chicago at WGN for Tribune Broadcasting--if the pilot for Willie (produced by Springer's old showrunner) clicks, it will air on Tribune-owned stations and WGN America starting in January for possible national syndication in Sept. 2011, as the Trib's return to the syndication game after getting out shortly before Sam Zell and Randy Michaels took over the Tribune Co. (and the Tribune Co. plunged into bankruptcy): http://newsblogs.chicagotribune.com/towerticker/2010/05/tribune-broadcasting-taping-cunningham-talkshow-pilot-at-wgn.html#more Cunningham was at WLW when Zell and Michaels' Jacor owned the station (it's now owned by Clear Channel, where Michaels worked after Zell sold Jacor to CC)--'LW was Michaels' first big radio triumph in the late 80s, when he turned the sleepy old-school full-service MOR AM station into a strange-bedfellows mix of hard rock and right-wing commentators (over time, the music departed). Right now, Michaels, with the assistance of programmer Kevin Pig Virus Metheny, seems to be trying to turn WGN Radio in Chicago into something like 'LW, to the ire of many listeners and Rob Feder of Chicago Public Media's Vocalo, who has a grudge against Michaels going back to his days at the Sun- Times in the early 90s when ABC hired Michaels to turn Top 40 station WYTZ into a copy of Michaels' infamous Power Pig format at WFLZ in Tampa--and Michaels failed miserably, receiving special heat from Feder for his last-ditch attempt at success by briefly renaming the station Hell FM, with liners like go to Hell and this is Hell. -- TV or Not TV The Smartest (TV) People! I liked him fine on TDS (but I like Stewart better); I liked him fine on LLS (but I like Craig 2.0 better). I would much rather watch him host a show for an hour than Leno for 10 minutes. -- TV or Not TV The Smartest (TV) People! Re: [TV orNotTV] Re: Kilby Coming to Fox OOs
I'll check out the new show. Until then I have no idea whether I'd like this iteration of Craiggers 6 times more than Leno or not. FWIW, the two talk shows I've managed to see in studio were Leno and Kilborn (on LLS). I liked them both fine, but I was there more to see a live taping than the specific hosts and guests. I liked him on Daily Show, but once he took over Late Late Show, I realized I liked the format more than the persona. Kilborn was fine in small doses -- ripping through goofy headlines and chatting with Kathy Ireland was fine, but only when segments by other people (i.e.: Brian Unger, Steve Carell, Stephen Colbert, A Whitney Brown, and Lewis Black) limited his on screen time. Limiting Kilborn's exposure is the key to his appeal. I found him excessively smug in his one hour CBS show. Assuming he is being honest and CBS wouldn't let him do certain things in late night, I don't know who has fooled him into thinking he'll be given more freedom in a daytime syndication deal. I don't think I've ever worked with a crew more creatively stifled than Howie Mandel's syndicated talk show, and my friends who worked on Martin Short's show told me the same thing. There is an anticipated audience when the word daytime is used -- and I know I'll offend people for stating this but oh well -- you don't win them over with cleverness and creativity. -- Kevin M.
