Take this with a grain of salt, but earlier on the Today show it came out in the discussion of the Letterman/Colbert transition that Colbert had timed the expiration of his CC contract to coincide with the end of Dave's CBS agreement. Not sure how much truth there is there, but if true, then Colbert has been thinking about this for a while. I see Chelsea's program as closer to this Paul F. Tompkins show than to either Politically Incorrect or Tough Crowd. That is, the first two programs comment about what's on TV, the movies or in music; the latter two comment about items in the news and/or politics. Maybe that's splitting hairs, but that second group would seem closer to TDS, and the first group closer to @midnight. I seem to remember Adam Carolla having a show in the Post-Daily Show Timeslot prior to Colbert. I remember it being some weird call-in show but I struggle to remember what the point of the show was. Too Late with Adam Carolla, a call-in talk show notable for an episode in which a ridiculously inebriated Steve-O (of Jackass fame) tackled Carolla and smashed a glass coffee table. The Wikipedia says it started at 11:30 in August 2005, but was pushed back to midnight when it failed to find an audience, and was finally cancelled in November. -- -- TV or Not TV The Smartest (TV) People!
